lovely and the food was simply delicious. Passing through the indoor dining room,
we noticed it was too air-conditioned and the modern decor was on the cool side
as well. Most customers were on the patio, which was warm and lovely. Perhaps
in July or August indoors would be preferred, but for much of the year the patio is
the place to be. Either place, the food we tried made it a good place to revisit. The
halibut special was the best fish dinner I have had in a long time. The pastry chef

The setting in the Desert Botanical Garden is lovely, will only improve as they fine tune the layout and decor. The food is delicious and imaginative, though amounts vary from dish to dish. (That is, 3 $25 or so entrees arrived with quite different amounts of food on the plate. That's an easy one to fix.) I would also quibble with the $6 "bread course," which amounted to 4 sliced of pretty good bread. That's a bit pricy: if the price must be $6 then it would be nice to have the plate refilled. We sat at a table on the beautiful patio next to a bubbling fountain surrounded by lush plants and herbs. Our waiter Aaron was perfect, he gave us the time we needed to enjoy our dinner and wine (also suggested a spot-on red wine for dinner, The Riddler). He was professional yet had a good sense of humor, which we loved. The food was cooked to perfection and was not overly fussy, but let the ingredients do the talking. The carpaccio was melt in your mouth fantastic. The swine entree was a pork lovers dream (loved the cassoulet and sausage). I will be back to try everything on the menu, as well as their brunch. Patio is definitely the way to go. Food was delicious and "gourmet" style with prices on the high side, but overall worth it. Reservations are necessary and they do a good job with honoring them promptly. However, the service needs a major overhaul or they won't be getting repeat customers at those prices. Our waitress was young, and a bit inexperienced although very pleasant. Had big issue with ordering a bottle of wine, she knew nothing about them, but got info for us. We ordered and never received it, had to let our appetizer sit for about 10 minutes. I love the outdoor seating where you can watch the creatures and the people as they wander thru the garden. We had the ranch steak which was prepared just right. Three ladies ordered the Newman Ranch Burgers, I had the Chicken breast sandwich, Anchiote marinaded, etc. We all really enjoyed the flavors of our lunch greatly. We also shared a small appetizer "three shrimp, bacon sitting on a nice spread of pureed celery root - tasty though abit more seasoning would been good. The luncheon selection menu was great, our server was very attentive.
Looking forward to returning for dinner some evening. Overall, Gertrudes is a great place to bring our friends and visiting family. We were fortunate to get an outside table next to the fountain. Our lunch was outstanding. We started with the calamari breaded with cornmeal. I think it is probably the best calamari I have ever eaten! My meal was the grain salad. It is a perfect portion for lunch. My husband had the green chili pork which he loved. It is spicy but in a subtle way. The flavor seems to develop in your mouth.
