George's California Modern
I brought a vegetarian andI brought a vegetarian and it was one of her all-time favorite meals!5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMtruly outstandingOne of the best dining experiences we've had in recent memory. The 4-course special was superb. Beautiful and flavorful seasonal vegetables highlight highest-quality proteins. Favorites included the first-course dungeness crab with pea puree and tomato water, the fluke in uni sauce, the second-course raviolini in ramp puree, the smoked fish (I forget which species) collar, and 3-way California lamb--a beautiful lamb chop, unusual lamb belly, and a piece of braised lamb shoilder. The only negative note was the lemon curd dessert (a deconstructed lemon meringue pie)--the curd was rubbery and jelly-like rather than a creamy curd. A minor complaint in an otherwise spectacular meal.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMOutstanding CuisineWe enjoyed our dinner at Georges. When we come down from Santa Barbara Ca. Georges is where we choose too eat.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMstellar mothers day dinner! All six if us tried different appetizers, dinners and desserts and each was unique beautifully presented and delicious. the special mix drinks look to arty to drink but the wine was fantastic. our waitress was professional friendly and there every time thought we would need her.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMExquisite DiningThe food at George's California Modern is exquisite with flavors and presentation. The restaurant is modern and upscale. The scallops & the lamb were by far my favorites. For the appetizer, the "fish Tacos" are uniquely prepared. If you like sashimi, you'll love their "fish tacos". We will be back.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMBrunch x3the CA Modern is only open for brunch/lunch 3 times during the year. This means that they don't normally concern themselves with breakfast things. Nevertheless, the crab omelet was stuffed with very tender shredded crab meat. Arugula salad was excellent with a tasty, light vinaigrette. The 'basket' of baked goods was an attractive, savory selection of three moist muffins. The service was attentive without being intrusive.
If you want to be able to see out the windows to the ocean, don't go in without a reservation - and even a willingness to wait.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMEnchanting DinnerWe had a wonderful dinner. The steak, beef tenderloin, and scallops were superb. The wine list had great values and quality. The service was very good.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMThe best in San DiegoLove the beautiful new decor with regal purple sofas. My husband and I have been coming here monthly for 9 years and George's never has disappointed us. We so look forward to our amazing experience from the moment we walk through the door. I think it's unique to find a restaurant that is always spot on. The service, the food, the ambiance, just wonderful. This time we were here to celebrate my husband's birthday. He sure enjoyed himself and left with a big smile in his heart. Whether it's a special occasion or just because, you must give George's California Modern a try.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMA treasured window seat overlookingA treasured window seat overlooking the ocean and attentive, knowledgeable service set the right tone. Arriving a bit early, I was quickly and graciously seated. This gave me a chance to explore the options on Chef's testing menu for my two colleagues who clearly did not support Mom's mandate "...to eat all the veggies on your plate". Food allergies also came in to play, so flexing to meet our needs was not simple. After due consideration, we did not get the tasting menu option, but just the willingness to work with my friends speaks to the dynamics of the kitchen. What we did have turned out to be superb: lamb and beef with seafood starters. Gazing around the packed room, we were not alone in being delighted by the fare and the ambience.5/6/2013 12:00:00 AMrequested a window view andrequested a window view and was told first come first serve. When we got to the restaurant there were 2 tables avaialbe, and we were told they can only seat 8 at these tables, (we were a party of 6). One of the party's came and they were seated at the table for 8 and only had 5 in their party, less than ours.....
wiatress was great and so was the food.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMFood & Service was very goodour server was one of the best we had during our week in San Francisco area - very attentive, knew the menu inside out and was able to accommodate dietary restricitions with excellent alternatives. Food was very good, well presented and excellent flavour! We will definately return when we are back in the area.5/2/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat place for vegans! My husband is vegan and so sometimes it is difficult to find a restaurant and/or menu that accommodates his 'needs.' George's was absolutely outstanding and when my husband's happy, I'm happy! Thank you, George's!4/28/2013 12:00:00 AMOne of the best for sure. One of the best for sure. Perfect service out standing food. Well done4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMDelicious dinner, we had oysters,Delicious dinner, we had oysters, lamb and scallops. The wine selection is excellent as well.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMOutstanding as always. OneOutstanding as always. One of San Diego's very finest restaurants.4/24/2013 12:00:00 AMThe ambiance was so so andThe ambiance was so so and the menu selection was somewhat limited. Food preparation and presentation how ever was excellent.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMMy husband and I celebratedMy husband and I celebrated our anniversary at George's California Modern and it was the perfect place. We had the chef's tasting menu with wine pairings and it was incredible! They were also very accommodating to our children who can't stop talking about the donut and dips dessert.4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMA must visit if you are inA must visit if you are in the San Diego area. We had lunch on the upstairs level one day and dinner on another. Views are spectacular and food was bettter if that is possible. Great service. If I lived in the area they would surely know me by name.4/15/2013 12:00:00 AMWe both tried the Chef's TastingWe both tried the Chef's Tasting and it was fabulous!!! Each dish was presented by a knowledgeable server, complete with a thorough and tantalizing description of the ingredients and preparation methods and every item was as delicious as it was attractive.
Wonderful experience - perfect melding of fabulous food and superb service!
When next in San Diego, we will return and will recommend to all our friends in the area.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMMy Reason For Going to San Diego.Second time at George's and it did not disappoint. Love the cocktail menu to start. The fish tacos (which I will not try to describe here, but let's just say that it is more of a "deconstructed" fish taco that does not resemble a regular fish taco at all) were excellent. Had the lamb and the snapper - both fantastic. Ended with the doughnuts for dessert (again won't try to describe exactly what this is here, but very good way to end the meal). And of course, it is hard to beat the views. Will be back again next time in SD.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMSplurge in La Jolla is worth it!George's California Modern presents a high-end, very professional, dining experience. We had two birthdays to celebrate, bringing our own bottle of extraordinary wine, and decided to choose the tasting menu for 4 people. The service was excellent, the food very good, and the attention to every detail apparent. Thanks to George's staff, their training and experience made the whole evening enjoyable.4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMTop of our list!An incredible place. We had probably one of the best meals ever. We had the lobster and halibut and both were outstanding. Small details for each dish, down to the salt & pepper option for our bread. To finish the experience, we got a call thanking us for choosing their restaurant for our dining experience. I can't say enough great things.4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food, mostly great serviceGreat dinner;our waiter was terrific.Upstairs at the Bar,when we told the hostess that we had reservations, were early and wanted to have a drink, she got snarky and abandoned us while she went to look for? BAD attitude. We left, and went downstairs to dinner where we were treated very well.(and spent $600 for 4)
I was dismayed at how stark the room is.No pictures on the walls,warehouse-like.Wasn't the old George's a lot prettier?I think the ambiance needs to be ramped up a bit to meet the food, and the prices! The view, of course, never changes.
We had the Tasting Menu, heavy on seafood with a little red meat thrown in for variety ,all of it superlative.Excellent! We'd definitely go again.4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMMy only complaint, we bothMy only complaint, we both left feeling a little hungry. We did not order an appetizer, but we each had dessert which was just OK -- nothing special. Everyone made a point of wishing my date a Happy Birthday and the candle and birthday greeting on his dessert plate was a nice touch. Thank you. All things considered we'll be back for special occasions.4/2/2013 12:00:00 AMGeorge's only offers brunchGeorge's only offers brunch for Mother's day and Easter. This is the first time we have eaten at the California Modern. It was excellent. The sticky buns were to die for! They were so good that we ordered another to share for dessert. The omelette was beautiful with crab and peas with the tendrils and leaves decorating it as well as delicious. We have eaten upstairs on the terrace and in the bar area and have had a fun time but the CA Modern was certainly a surprise Easter Present!3/31/2013 12:00:00 AMI had a reservation for 8.30PMI had a reservation for 8.30PM on a Saturday but the table was not ready and not seated until 9.10PM. Aside from that, the evening went quite smooth. We had a pretty big group of 12 people for my birthday so I can understand a small delay but definitely did not expect a 40 minute delay.3/30/2013 12:00:00 AMThe two of us enjoyed an excellentThe two of us enjoyed an excellent meal, wonderful view with top notch service. The food was nicely different and relied heavly on local growers so everything was fresh and full of flavor. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and will definitely return.3/29/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful meal, fantasticWonderful meal, fantastic service. Service was attentive but not intrusive. We ate early to get a table with view. Rec'd a call day after meal thanking us for dining - that's a first for me.3/26/2013 12:00:00 AMHeavenlyIf you find a better restaurant -- cuisine, wine selection, ambience -- in Southern California, let me know. I haven't tasted oysters that compare to these since the Post Ranch Inn 15 years ago. Perfectly grilled sea bass with an original array of tasty vegetables. Cheeses no one else offers. A 1999 Savennieres from the Loire Valley that would be a rare gem in a fine Parisian restaurant. No pretension, no excess, just balanced perfection in each dish. Cost: $128 per person bottom line with tip. Just try to match this in France for 100 Euros. Good luck!3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food, excellent serviceGreat food, excellent service and ambiance! If you've never dined at George's, then that's another thing to add to your "To Do" list.3/17/2013 12:00:00 AMSuperb, as alwaysThe best!!! What a fabulous evening, just perfect. Can't wait to go back.3/16/2013 12:00:00 AMExceeds ReputationWhen we arrived our table was not ready. They bought us a round of drinks even though we only had to wait 15 minutes - an idea of how great the service is.
The bread basket and salts were outstanding and were refilled without asking. The bread is worth the carbs and is served warm.
Our appetizers were good. The red salad was very good. However, the entrees were the star of the show. I had their tenderloin. The cut was one of the best I have had and the sauce was outstanding. The lamb dish was interesting and very tender as well. Service was kind and attentive. It is a restaurant not to be missed. I will return!!!3/9/2013 12:00:00 AMFamily celebrated our SilverFamily celebrated our Silver Wedding Anniversary. Everything went perfectly.
