A word from George's California Modern
Occupying the lower level of iconic George’s at the Cove in the heart of La Jolla overlooking the Pacific coastline, George’s California Modern is an upscale contemporary restaurant featuring the thoughtful and inventive cuisine of acclaimed Executive Chef/Partner Trey Foshee. Working with mostly locally sourced products, Foshee artfully combines ingredients to create modern dishes that tell a story, with pure, intensified flavors and interesting flavor combinations. Combined with stunning ocean views, a modern design aesthetic, extensive wine list, seasonal craft cocktails and a relaxed yet refined service approach, the California Modern experience has been described as “evoking San Diego and capturing its culinary essence.”

George’s California Modern serves dinner nightly, including an a la carte menu or new six-course tasting menu with smaller tastes of items Foshee and his team are especially proud of and that may be fleeting in their availability

Diner Reviews
  • "The food, the menu, the wait staff, the wine list - all excellent. The chef gets all of his produce from one local farm. Our delicious yellowtail was served with beautiful baby veggies including lovely tiny artichokes, nasturtium leaves and even a little nasturtium bloom. During dinner, the young, most attractive manager stopped by our table to introduce himself and personally welcome us...a very nice touch. And the next night, when we dined in a more casual part of the restaurant, he remembered us from the night before and warmly welcomed us back as he walked through to check on things. The ambiance is lovely. Tables looking out at the Pacific are hard to snag, but spectacular view if you are lucky enough to get one! Highly recommend!"

  • "Truly the most amazing dining experience I can recall, in fact I think it is right up there at the top of my favorites. I can't say enough great things about your restaurant. The service, the food, the presentation....excellent bravo fantastic!!! I am a foodie, and I can say without hesitation that this is one of the best, if not the best, restaurant that I have ever been to. Thank you for a very memorable evening."

  • "Celebrated my boyfriend's birthday here - first time to SD and first time to George's. Would HIGHLY recommend this place! The food was truly some of the best we have ever had and everyone there truly made the evening special for us. Our server Shane was so great and just was the icing to the perfect evening! Thank you George's for a lovely evening!!"

  • "I took my husband here for his 40th birthday. We did the four course tasting menu. Everything was delicious and plenty of food. Service was great and the view was amazing. Couldn't have asked for more."

  • "I enjoyed the experience as our server was fantastic; however, the food was not that great for the price, which was high. I am a vegetarian and the only 2 vegetarian meal options were $28. I could feed the whole restaurant roasted or charred vegetables for that price. The farro dish was just okay as there was so much oil at the bottom of the bowl, it was not appetizing. I chose the 4 courses with wine pairing as it was a special occasion. The wine was delicious and we were provided a nice sample with each course; however again, it was not worth the extra $34 to have a sample pairing with each course. I'll eat elsewhere next time for much less for better food."

  • "California Modern epitomizes the very best in elegant gourmet dining. Each course was artistically presented by attentive, knowledgeable servers. The striking contemporary decor, further enhanced by the stunning ocean view added to the sensory delight of each course. The fish taco appetizers were far more exotically delicious than the pedestrian name would indicate. The main courses were inventive, making each bite one to savor. And the desserts….oh my!! Macarons with strawberry sorbet, drenched in lemon custard for me and a mouth watering vanilla pudding for my husband--every calorie was worth it! California Modern was the absolute perfect place to celebrate our 50th anniversary. It was truly a golden gourmet experience!"

  • "Beautiful restaurant, superb food with excellent presentation. Exquisite salads, small plates, and varied entrees. Deserves reputation as one of the best restaurants in La Jolla, and possibly San Diego."

  • "We had the 4-course tasting menu with wine pairings and it was all very good. The pairings complemented the food well and every item was plated beautifully. Highly recommend the burrata, the ravioli, the lamb, the warm chocolate tart and the vanilla pudding. The fish tacos, aka sashimi, were good as were the beef tongue and the shortribs, but all were quite rich (just order one of them and not all of them as your choices). We won't go back to celebrate a special occasion as the restaurant was not accommodating to that (they wouldn't reserve a special table for the romantic celebration). But we may try the other two restaurants at some point and see how they fare."

  • "The presentation and food was outstanding. It was worth the money for the service and view. I would go again but unfortunately I don't live in San Diego."

  • "A very unique experience for non Californians; we enjoyed a four course meal with wine pairing. The food was fresh and expertly prepared; delicate tastes from non traditional ingredients that resulted in a totally exciting experience. The wines paired with the courses were phenomenal and truly complemented every bite. The waiter was outstanding providing direction, answering questions and explaining each course and more importantly the origin of the wines and why they were chosen for that particular choice. Each course arrived in a timely manner and not from sitting under a heat lamp. A perfect evening."

  • "We wanted to celebrate our daughter's birthday with a special meal, and George's exceeded our expectations with outstanding courses, wonderful blends of fruits and vegetables in every course, and a surprise in every mouthful. We thoroughly appreciated the artistic presentations, delicious taste combinations, and adventurous delights. The staff were wonderful in making us feel at home, comfortable, and well cared for. What a great evening! We are very appreciative for all the effort put into making this such a memorable meal and birthday celebration. We plan to return soon."

  • "Great view and ambience but the food was not bad. We were hoping for more. We had to octopus and chocolate clams for one course, beef tongue and snapper for another course, and dry aged ribeye and lobster for entrees. The service was great."

  • "My nieces and partners gave me a dinner voucher for a special birthday as I was on holiday in San Diego from Glasgow UK. The website to book the table was easy to use and a prompt confirmation was received. Warm friendly and professional greeter, as were all staff through out the visit. Our server was observant - gift voucher stated for my birthday and he met my request for no singing!. We sought two explanations of the menu which were well explained. The quality of the food and presentation of each course was excellent - best dinner during 3 weeks holiday in the USA. The wine was of good quality and value for money. I would certainly recommend Georges at the Cove to any friends and family visiting the La Jolla and San Diego area."

  • "We chose George's fine dining restaurant to celebrate our daughter's 21st birthday. The food was amazingly fresh and beautifully and artfully prepared. The service was casual but appropriate. George even came by our table to congratulate our daughter. I highly recommend this restaurant...a La Jolla legend."

  • "I have to admit, I don’t get to California Modern as often as I’d like. And as I said to my friend Michael last night as we were at the end, it’s like this is so sublime, so extraordinary, you simply don’t want to ruin it by making it an “everyday” habit. We chuckled. We had the standard tasting menu. The heart and soul of the meal, courses 2 and 3, the corn ravioli and the lamb, were beyond the pale. Full-on, there are no words. You simply have to come to George’s and partake of the MODERN. If you do, and if you’re lucky enough for an encore, a return visit or two, well, I am certain it will occur to you that this “fine dining” experience—the chef, the menu, the meal, the service, the venue, all of it,—is unsurpassed, like no other."

  • "I was worried that the food might not be up to the view. I was wrong. It was innovative and delicious."

  • "We were unable to sit oceanside due to a private party, usually those are held not in the prime location, I would think. Also the prawn appetizer that was the special that night 'ran out' after we ordered it. How does that happen? Service was great otherwise."

  • "I guess that I've thought of myself as a bit of a foodie, but this is the second high end experience in a month where I just didn't fully "get it." I expect top notch ingredients cooked perfectly and served really attractively. The latest trend seems to treat each plate as a canvas and present as many "colors" as possible. Just too much going on on each plate. That said, what I did get was delicious and satisfying. This was not my first trip to George's and the service and ambience were as excellent as I expected them to be. The food was just a bit over my head!"

  • "My husband and I celebrated our Anniversary and are looking forward to celebrating my birthday in a few weeks. Service, food.....always, always the very best, perfection. If you are looking for an evening to remember, George's is the place to come to. You won't be disappointed. And, once you give them a try, you will return many many times."

  • "La Jolla is a tough market. This is a nice try but the space is too cramped, the view is limited and the bottom line is the prices are far to high for food that is not off the charts. A nod to the service, it was spectacular. All in all, there's better views and food to be had in the area."

  • "The food is divine and the view spectacular. We had the lamb entree, halibut entree, wine and two desserts. The lamb came with two styles of lamb on the plate and both were equally good. The halibut came with a lovely green sauce. The coconut dessert was to die-for but then so was the chocolate one with beets. The chef is creative and blends/pairs flavors well! Everything we ate was perfection."

  • "The views are great if you are lucky enough to get a table by the windows. The 4-course prix fixe was a real steal, considering the quality of food. Very inventive dishes that were expertly prepared. The grilled sardine appetizer and the lamb entree were standout dishes. Desserts were marvelous, especially the french macarons. Staff is courteous and knowledgeable and service was attentive but not overbearing. Cocktails were great and the wine listed well-curated. We enjoyed all the dishes we had and would definitely recommend. Be warned that the place is smallish and can get loud. I wouldn't say it's the best place for a private, romantic dinner."

  • "The food was the finest, the view and mural are grand, and the service was outstanding (knowledgeable, friendly attentive but not intrusive). The menu is diverse, modern and strong on tastings but otherwise not long. It is still the best it gets for special occasions in La Jolla."
    Dined on 6/21/2014
  • "The food, wine and service are incredible. There are lots of gourmet food restaurants but this one is clearly a step ahead of them. It is simply elegant in every way!"
    Dined on 6/21/2014
  • "The attentive service and the presentation of the food were impeccable. Some dishes were better than others but it's a matter of taste, not the quality of the food. Nice place to celebrate a special occasion and enjoy unique food recipes and presentaton."

  • "Celebrated mom's birthday here. They seated our party of 4 next to the windows with the grat ocean view. Service was great. Food was great. I especially liked the 1st course "fish tacos" which are not what you'd expect... It was the best. Thanks for a great night out."

  • "Food was excellent. While the wine list was extensive, there were not a lot of "affordable" selections. List was heavy in big name, high priced show off wines. More like a corporate budget looking to buy business. Did not see a great deal of bottles ordered while we were dining. We stuck to the by the glass menu which offered good selections."

  • "We chose George's as a place to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We were in town visiting that weekend from the San Francisco Bay area and weren't too familiar with good places to eat. After some research, we settled on George's. My husband had been before with his work team and eaten dinner on the terrace. He said it was a fantastic view and a great place to enjoy some delicious food. For our dinner we dined in the Ocean View dining room where they offer both a la carte selections as well as 3 different tasting menus. There was a 4 course, a 10 course and a 14 course tasting menu. We opted for the 10 course with wine pairing. The courses were incredibly creative and well presented. The wines were unique and delicious. Highly recommend."

  • "My wife and I went to dinner for our 31st anniversary the other night. What a captivating view regardless of the fact that we grew up in the area. The food was unique and very good. Service was wonderful and non-hurried. Only thing that would keep me from coming back sooner is the price. A bit expensive but well worth the special occasion."

  • "We ranked this very highly, indeed the best place we ate during our time in S. Calif. On a Sydney scale we'd give it a 16/20. This would place it in the top 20 Sydney restaurants, which shows its merits. The 4 course dining option was well worth it, giving the chance for two excellent starters. The service was efficient and under-stated, which we like. The wine list probably lacked depth, especially for drier whites. Value was excellent for a place of this quality. We highly recommend it. Oh, a back seat against the wall gives a cosy booth. A window seat is enticing but there is an ugly foreground building which disappears when you sit back in the restaurant. The internal fit-out is superb, so nothing lost being right in its midst."
