A word from George's California Modern
Occupying the lower level of iconic George’s at the Cove in the heart of La Jolla overlooking the Pacific coastline, George’s California Modern is an upscale contemporary restaurant featuring the thoughtful and inventive cuisine of acclaimed Executive Chef/Partner Trey Foshee. Working with mostly locally sourced products, Foshee artfully combines ingredients to create modern dishes that tell a story, with pure, intensified flavors and interesting flavor combinations. Combined with stunning ocean views, a modern design aesthetic, extensive wine list, seasonal craft cocktails and a relaxed yet refined service approach, the California Modern experience has been described as “evoking San Diego and capturing its culinary essence.”

George’s California Modern serves dinner nightly, including an a la carte menu or new six-course tasting menu with smaller tastes of items Foshee and his team are especially proud of and that may be fleeting in their availability

  • "The "fish tacos" are a must try! Delicious and unique 4 course meal! Beautiful ocean view. Server was awesome - very knowledgeable about the unique dishes with great recommendations. Next time would like to experience the outside bars."

  • "My wife and I hadn't eaten here at George's for several years and thought we would give it a go. We asked for a table by the window in our Open Table reservation but were informed by phone before we left the house and upon arrival that tables by the window are first come first serve. There are 6 tables by windows and there isn't much to look at if you are in the middle or far east end of the restaurant but each other. We experienced a mix bag but I would recommend the "fish tacos" and the braised beef. The portions are large and are definitely splitable. Would I return again; it would a Coin Toss!"

  • "Creative dishes done well. Service was attentive and prompt. Nice wine list with a good selection of non-California wines, as well. The atmosphere is a bit stark, but nicely done."

  • "The restaurant is seamless in every regard. Their attention to detail means nothing is overlooked. Food is truly amazing, wait staff are professional and so knowledgeable, wine list extensive so I've rated this THE best restaurant I've ever been to in San Diego County"

  • "We couldn't get a sitter so took our son with us on a early Sunday evening to celebrate our anniversary. We had been there previously for my husband's birthday but the service was not great for the quality of restaurant which I posted here. Because of this they were extremely attentive to us and the service was very good - sad it has to be on a second visit after complaining. Like last time the food was overall quite good, with some favorites (the fish tacos, squid ink pasta and trout were outstanding) and they were very good to my 8 year old, making him a mocktail and providing extra plates so we could share the food. A nice place worth the price for most menu items- if you can get a reservation it's worth a special occasion visit ."

  • "I took my friend for her birthday. She is a very good chef. We opted for a splurge on the 8 course Tasting menu with wine pairings. We were enormously pleased with the Tasting menu. Each course is pretty small, yet you come away feeling pleasantly filled. Each course was outstanding and memorable and all quite different from each other. The wine pairings were top rated and skillfully chosen to go with each course. The pace of the meal was just right. We spent nearly three hours and never once felt like it was too slow. Shane and Lauren were primary servers and there were two others all of whom new their food and could answer detailed questions. All in all it was an outstanding dinner and we can't wait to go back again soon."

  • "While the view isn't quite as spectacular as upstairs, the food more than made up for it. We were treated to a complimentary Kir Royal and gifted a bottle of olive oil because we had told them it was our anniversary. The service was very attentive and not rushed. We each had the 4 course tasting menu so we sampled 8 menu items. All were fantastic and had some creative twists that peak our interests without being off-the-wall weird. I especially enjoyed the hamachi appetizer and the fish taco's my husband ordered lived up to the media hype they got. Portion sizes were appropriately scaled to allow you to enjoy all 4 courses and still feel well fed. I'm looking forward to returning and ordering the items we didn't get the first time."

  • "Truly a La Jolla Classic. We had a terrific night, every bite a unique taste. Fantastic service from our server Sean, who helped choose a very appropriate bottle for our meals. My lady and I like to try a little of everything, so had three apps, which were each simply amazing. There are very few places I have experienced a true 'pop' sensation from each and every bite- tops on my list was the French Laundry- but Goerge's provided the same feeling. Dinner for two, desert and drinks pre dinner well, over $300. Magnifique!"

  • "Our party of 6 showed up for our 5 30 reservation with very high expectations. We chose to dine early to take advantage of the beautiful ocean vistas. the view did not disappoint and neither did the food. They chose to combine ingredients in such a way that they created unique and wonderful flavors. The prices are steep, particularly if you are a wine connoisseur. But, overall, I can give this restaurant the highest possible endorsement."

  • "Took our granddaughter for her 21st birthday dinner. George's service was spot-on and they made a great effort (without being pretentious) to make her feel very special. Loved the 4course tasting menu which gave all of us a chance to taste each other's dishes. The fresh prawns, the grilled octopus, the California lamb, & the aged ribeye were delicious...and the desserts! Our granddaughter loved the warm, chocolate tart, my husband loved the moist carrot cake, and I enjoyed the donuts&dips (altho I was so stuffed, I couldn't eat more than 2!). I would say the only "unmemorable" dish was the dungeness crab appetizer. Bland looking on a white bowl and bland tasting. It was first course so everything that came after that was a hit!"

  • "This is an outstanding restaurant in La Jolla! It was recommended to us & exceeded expectations. Our server, Pat, was terrific, but it seemed all the staff was great! This is the first restaurant I can remember ever calling me the day after our dinner to see if everything went ok with our reservation & meal - super classy!! Our meal was delicious, it's obvious the chef takes great pride in what is sent out if the kitchen! Definitely consider George's if you are visiting the area!!!"

  • "When we first got there, we were a little taken aback by the prices, but then decided to enjoy ourselves and make it a special occasion. We did miss the view as it was too dark when we got there, however, there is a lovely mural of the ocean and a palm tree that shows in the evening. While this is an upper end restaurant it was not too stuffy or pretentious. I can only say the food was among the best we've had. The 4 donut hole dessert was amazing, so was the coconut whip. Wine was also a bit pricey, but good selections by the glass. My only suggestion for improvement would be for the dirty martini, my husband and I both ordered one, but only got 1 olive.........should have 2 or 3!"

  • "We celebrated my husband's 40th birthday at George's. We had an incredible time & really appreciate the attention to detail, refined selection of menu items and impeccable service provided by Alec. The idea of the 4-course tasting menu had all of our mouths watering. Since some of us are lighter eaters, a few of us opted for the a la carte option. This did not create any issue for the restaurant. It is impossible to go wrong with menu choices, but I personally opted for the Soft Egg starter and Short rib entree, other popular choices at our table were the fish tacos & sardines (starters) and lamb & rib-eye (entrees). Must haves are the donuts and warm chocolate tarte. Finally, special requests were handled above & beyond our expectations."

  • "We were meeting another couple, one of which had been quite ill. The entire staff made certain they were comfortable (and a window table!) and well cared for. The service was outstanding from the tasty tropical cocktail the bartender is developing to the great guy who waited on our table. Food was yummy. The swordfish and short ribs were outstanding. Carrot cake...innovative, but not my style. Would recommend for sure!!!"

  • "Each course was well presented. The combinations were unique and incredibly good. We did the wine pairing - perfect choices. And the server, Dan, was awesome ! Well worth the cost of the taxi ride from downtown San Diego. Wish we lived in the area to frequent this place more often."

  • "Our dinner was absolutely fabulous. We were there on valentines day and there was a prix fixe menu for $75 ea. However, by the time the tax & tip was included (by the restaurant) the bill was nearly $300 for 3 people."

  • "In town for a conference and found the restaurant after a lot of searching. Reservation for Valentine's Day and was called over a dozen times within the month prior to confirm. We met some clients who we would have liked to have join us and we called early to inquire about the possibility of adding two to our reservation or two chairs to our table. They almost laughed as if that was ludicrous and I should have known it was completely sold out. In any event, we arrived only to see 5-6 of the ten or so tables in our area vacant, available and open with no one sitting at or that people sat at during our dinner. This lack of accommodation was completely rude. Late notice on the limited menu with upcharge for steak. Worst $300 ever spent."

  • "we had a wonderful dinner. Unfortunately, the fog was in early so even though we had a wonderful window table, we could not see anything. The food was extremely good and service was wonderful. It was Valentine's day and a special event so everything was outstanding."

  • "Please thank our server, he was GREAT. He was very educated in just being KIND to people. We will be back. He was a great conversationalist. We were there for our 24th wedding anniversary on Valentines Day and loved every minute. I wish I knew his name. We both love expensive cars , and he showed us a picture of a vintage car that was parked out front one day. Thank you for a great time , in a great place, with some great people !!!! Very sincerely , Jerry Leone"

  • "Although certainly on the more pricey end for the average diner we cannot recommend enough to dine here! The drinks and food are outstanding! Treat yourself and someone special! They even call the next day to ensure you had a great experience. Classy without being snobby."

  • "Been coming to George's for 8+ years and never disappointed. Terrace for lunch or happy hour is a visual treat but dinner is fit for foodies. Saturday night's dinner no exception. Party of 4 enjoyed wonderful 4 course meal. Great lamb special, "doughnuts for dessert" and perfect service made for very pleasant evening of wine, food and conversation. Highly recommended but be prepared to spend $70+ per person"

  • "While already dark at dinner time so no ocean view, no matter. Beautiful modern décor. Absolutely top flight service with prompt attention when needed, insight and helpful explanations of dishes, and plenty of time left alone when we wanted to be. And the dinner was excellent, perfectly done swordfish for me and outstanding short ribs for my wife. We usually skip desserts, but made a happy exception. All around fine dining, well done."

  • "We are just as excited with our 98th visit here as we were with our first. We moved here from the Bay area almost ten years ago and are so happy that we found this gem. The food, service and ambiance are impeccable. If you are looking for a fine dining experience that you will never forget, you should give George's California Modern a try. From the moment you walk through the door George's team is warm and welcoming. And, the great experience continues throughout the evening with the delicious food and outstanding service."

  • "My husband made reservations for our 14th anniversary. From the minute we walked in we were treated like VIPs. We choose the 4 course meal and every course had so many amazing choices. I couldn't decide between 2 of the appetizers so our waiter surprised us by bringing both of my choices. The little touches throughout the night really made our night special. George's is our go to place when we want delicious food and impeccable service. We've never been disappointed."

  • "George's showed masterful execution of our plates. The food was simple, clean, fresh, and so well prepared. The only thing I desire improvement on is that their lobster dish (although very good) was a little unimaginative. A welcoming host. Enthusiastic and great servers. A drinking menu with a great selection of wines, cocktails, and craft beer. The interior was a tad dreary but if you get here at sunset it doesn't matter. Definitely worth going again and again to try all their dishes."

  • "My husband and I celebrated his 40th birthday at George's and it couldn't have been more perfect or more memorable. Dan, our waiter, was fun and attentive. The food was creative and delicious. Because it is January, darkness prevented us from enjoying the amazing view, but it's there! The staff even sent him home with truffles and a bottle of olive oil. We will definitely go back next time we visit San Diego."
