A word from Georges Bistro
Monique and Georges owned Chez Georges restaurant in Kirkwood and Westheimer for 13 years. They opened Bistro Provence in 1998, and in 2002 they turned it over to their son Jean-Philippe and his wife Genevieve. Afterwards, they opened 7 more restaurants including Bistro Don Camillo, Café la Brocante, and Bistro des Arts.

Chef Georges first opened Chez Georges at this location in 2005. After a short break from the business, he decided to return and reopen as Georges Bistro and feature very traditional cuisine from the French countryside. His menu options include escargot, pâtés, foie gras médallions, andouillette, quenelle, magret de canard, rabbit stew, baba au rhum, and crèpes suzette.

We had a delightful classic French meal here including foie gras, bouillabaise, ris de veau and duck breast. It was all beautifully prepared and served with gracious hospitality. The wine list is extensive (and can be expensive) but the house wine served by the bottle was perfectly serviceable. Plus, they are open on Sunday night! We will be back.

My Francophile wife and I had a marvelous dinner last week at the new Georges Bistro at 219 Westheimer. On a chilly evening, the cozy rooms of the fine old house were beautifully decorated, evoking Provence. Madame Guy was our server, her husband cooked and Edith Piaf sang in the background. I had a small bouillabaisse that was superb; the rich broth had a remarkable depth of flavor. It was accompanied by a garlicky rouille on toast that thrilled the taste buds. My wife's filet mignon with peppercorn sauce was delicious. So, the next time we yearn for authentic French food and ambiance, we will save the cost of a trip to Paris and come back to Georges Bistro.

Our favorite "real" French restaurants in Houston include Cafe Rabelais, Bistro Max & Julie and Georges Bistro. We found Etoile and Le Mistral to be a little pretentious. Rabelais and Max & Julie serve great, authentic "brasserie" style food but Georges in terms of "haute cuisine" ranks first. The ambience is quiet yet friendly and welcoming and the service is excellent. The food is really well prepared and very tasty and the wine list, although less extensive than that of Cafe Rabelais, has been very carefully and expertly chosen. Bottom line, if you want an authentic experience of classy, thoughtfully chosen traditional French food and wine that is excellently prepared and presented, Georges is the place.

We were the first customers of the evening post a theater matinee, so had the attention of all restaurant personnel for a while. Service was very attentive and friendly, and server explained all the dishes in detail since neither of us had eaten at a French restaurant before. The food was beautifully prepared and presented and the wine selections are extensive, with many half-bottle selections available. There seems to be a simpleness and purity about the food that made the dinner exceptional. Although I have never been to France, I imagine this to be French comfort food. I would definitely return to Georges for dinner with friends in the future.

Georges Bistro is located in a previously occupied restaurant site which is in the lower Westheimer Neighborhood. The building looks ancient from the outside, but is warm and friendly inside. Food is very French, served well, and very tasty. Menu is not extensive, but very reasonable for the size/capacity of the kitchen. Wine list is very appropriate for the menu. This is an exciting find, and deserves further exploration of the menu.

This restaurant is in an old house and is decorated like a French country house. The menu is fairly short, but - covers a wide enough range to accommodate most tastes. The wine prices are not cheap but not outlandish. The food (that is why we came) is really good. Is is very near to downtown so it may be easier to go downtown and them down elgin/westheimer to get there than to go East on Westheimer toward downtown through all the traffic. My wife had fish and it was good. I had was was called Beef Stew but was very like Beef Burgeon

A real French place, with a real French (not Parisian) service and atmosphere. Take your time, enjoy a nice evening. Foie gras either pan-seared or pate, perfect cooking time, kidney just the right color, everything presents the right combination of authentic flavors. You are not rushed out of your seat to accomodate new cash cows, you can linger and enjoy your wine (quite nice list covering all good tastes). If you want to take your beloved to France for your anniversary, stay in Houston, Monique and Georges make it worth it.

We've been several times now. Monique is great and has always been helpful for the wine list, especially considering my poor knowledge of French wines. Victoria has been our waitress every time and was also very helpful and sweet. The food is old country style French food and is absolutely delicious. They feature well known French favorites as well as a few specialties such as the Quenelle (a snapper prepared with a mousse like texture) and the Andouillette (house made sausage!). We tried both on our first visit and my wife has kept on ordering the Quenelle since. Overall, we have been quite well taken care of and left happy every time.

We went for HRW but ended up just ordering off the menu. The fois gras terrine was excellent and mussels were good. Our entrees of Duck Confit Cassoulet and Seafood Quenelle were both wonderful! Our dessert of Honey Lavender Creme Brulee was good as well. Will definitely go back for the fois gras, duck confit and the quenelle...our favorites!

I don't have enough space here to explain the entire debacle. Suffice to say that the food was very very good, and our waitress went out of her way to help with a terrible experience. But Mrs. Georges ruined our experience by twice insulting my dad's intelligence -- once over a corked bottle of wine, and later over a steak that was not cooked to his clearly stated preference. We were treated like idiots, like people who had never ordered a bottle of wine or a steak before. Insulting and inexcusable. We will never ever go back, and we will tell everyone we know about our experience.

This is the second time we visited Georges Bistro. It is a family-run French restaurant. As a group of three, we were able to try all the options for the three courses. The first course was the best. The vegetable terrine was unexpectedly good. Unfortunately the service is typical for a family business: while cordial, sometimes hard to find. Despite the service, it is the food for which we will coming back.

Beautiful presentation of traditional gourmet French food, delicious and carefully prepared. It is located in a lovely old house with tables in each room. The whole ambiance is one of intimacy and fine dining where you can actually carry on a good conversation -- and hear each other easily. The service isn't rushed so diners can appreciate each dish instead of being pressed to finish at a certain time so someone else can have the table.

Was referred to this restauran by a French friend, and told it was were French Houstonites eat. I now vouch for that. Monique was very attentive, the wine list is surprising, but the food was amazing. I had the veal kidney in mustard sauce, which was delicious, and my wife had the filet in peppercorn sauce, which was succulent. However, word of advice, leave space for the huge, divine deserts. A unexpected, but most welcome surprise came when I received the bill and found it modest in comparison with the quality of the food and service. I recommend this restaurant and will most definitely add to my usual places list.

This old house seems more comfortable as Georges French bistro than it did as the meat centric Feast. Parking is very limited so plan to make use of the available valet. We ordered off the HRW menu. Vegetable terrine was refreshing during hot weather but could do with more color. Very generous portion of the house smoked salmon. Table behind us raved about their escargot. Rabbit was rich and tender. Nicely cooked steak came in a substantial pool of cream sauce. Wine list was excellent. Our server was very pleasant and eager but young and inexperienced. We'll give this another try when cooler temperatures arrive as many of the attractive menu items seemed to go better with fall weather.

George Guy has been cooking great French food in Houston for over 20 years. He has brought his culinary magic to Montrose. His Snapper Quenelle is unique to Houston and should not be missed. It is heavenly. Pair it with very good reasonably priced French wine and you will be in heaven. Save room for a great French dessert though. You may even want to eat you first snail here. George's are great. Say hello to George while you are here, he will really be the one cooking your food! His wife Monique manages the restaurant and his granddaughter often waits tables, so it truly is a family affair.

We am so tired of all the new restaurants that open up in Houston where the chefs try to convince you that traditional cuisine is out and that fusion of absolutely incompatible foods and styles is the latest and greatest and the food writers give rave reviews to these charlatans. We want to eat good food that is recognizable and properly prepared and which leaves you feeling very satisfied and neither hungry nor stuffed. Georges Bistro fits that description.

Wonderful food and service. The owner's grand daughter had an excellent knowledge of the food and wines to accompany. The restaurant is in an old house that has been beautifully redone with charm and grace. The only problem, as with almost all lower Westheimer restaurants, is a lack adequate of on site parking so a valet is necessary if you drive there but he was very careful and no speed demon. Looking forward to going for supper again.

Pretty, romantic, intimate, and warm. Every seat is a window seat! The dining room is flooded with natural light until the sun goes down, then it's softly and warmly lit. All the wood just glows. Victoria, the granddaughter of the owners, provided the service, and she was wonderful, helping guide us to excellent choices. Duck and pork rillette and French onion soup were both delicious. Red snapper with fennel was light and complex and memorable. A poached organic peach with cream cake made a perfect finish. We'll be back, and I've already recommended Georges to friends!

The food was, as one would expect from a chef like George Guy, outstanding. The ambience was very European, especially in regard to the setting and the professional manner in which it was served. The menu selection was difficult only because it offer so many good choices. Finally, the service was excellent and pleasantly anticipatory.
