Diner Reviews
  • "Loved this quaint little French restaurant. Every single thing I tried was full of flavor and so rich. We had the salmon to start, which with the citrus sauce and rich goat cheese foam, it was truly a delight. The Quail was absolutely delightful and super tender. The Ostrich was by far my favorite and I did not expect it to be so tender, delicious, and tasty. Great place to try!"

  • "Great gem, small space very limited seating, if there is a big party be prepared for loud noise and not being able to hear your friends since the space is so small; however the really delicious farm-to-table food makes it worthwhile."

  • "I was looking for a NY restaurant that allowed corkage and found this diamond in the rough. There is limited, tight seating, but that didn't stop us from having a fun, two hour meal. Dress is comfortable/casual. The decor is non-existent.it's all about the food.period.the food, overall, was good to excellent.the entrees were of fair size/portion. The pheasant pate was excellent.escargot were good, but the lobster tail app. did not have semblance of fresh lobster. Entrees, e.g. Quail or Tournedos, we're excellent, and the service was attentive and genuine. This is a good spot to bring an old rhone or Bordeaux and enjoy it appropriately. Just don't forget to offer some to your server.though you are in NY, it doesn't mean you are a troglodyte"

  • "The place is a bit small, but the food will send your palate on a joyous ride. I have been here twice and both times it's been an amazing food experience. This place is a must for anyone who appreciates food art."

  • "Small menu, but everything was delicious. We ordered French Onion Soup, Beet Salad, Salmon tartar, curried escargot, and pate for starters and the venison, cassoulet and cod for our mains and everything was piping hot and delicious. We cleaned our plates despite being super full. For dessert we ordered a pear tart, creme brulee and chocolate mousse and again were delighted with everything. We highly recommend."

  • "This restaurant is very small but food was delicious and worth the close seating. I will recommend this to friends and visitors!"

  • "The food was delicious!! I had the codfish and the salmon tartare as an appetizer. The wine list is amazing! The place is small, so therefore make a reservation. The music was great."

  • "Great food and good service in this very small restaurant. I had the onion soup and beef which were both delicious. Desserts were also very enjoyable. Would highly recommend!"

  • "We absolutely loved the food and the wonderfully creative menu. Highly recommend the Bison Short Ribs - soft and falling off the bone -- and the Tournedos Rossini -- with the tasty foie gras that gives it the perfect finish. The ambiance is quiet, maybe too quiet and given that the tables are so close together we had to do all we could to shut out the conversations on both sides of us. Also, the wait for food between apps and mains was unusually long, which is surprising given how small the restaurant is. Definitely worth the visit though and have already sent some friends -- but make sure you aren't in a rush and have time to linger over your yummy wine."

  • "liked the design, very cosy atmosphere. Good place for a date."

  • "We came here on a very cold evening. From the reviews I've read I knew this place would be tiny - in reality it's even smaller than I had expected, but they made the most of their space. They had a decent heating system with shielded doors - but given the corridor-like set up, the customers can really feel the temperature drop every time someone opens the door. My friend had to put her coat on in the middle of her meal. I was also told by one of their workers to sit at a certain angle so he could go in and out of the restaurant without squeezing pass. Having said that, we really liked most of the dishes we ordered, and the service was pleasant. The cod was exceptionally fragrant and light and all the presentations lovely."

  • "wonderful atmosphere...friendly..nice ..cordial,,,but food was only fair...not wonderful,,desert (pecan pie wit hazelnut ice cream)..was bland,,tasteless and actually somewhat gritty..main courses..were fine..but nothing exceptional.."

  • "Small and intimate. The food was very nice. Several unique dishes. Particularly liked the food gras and the curried snails. The owners were very friendly and welcoming. It's too small for a group but it is a very nice date spot."

  • "Gentleman Farmer is easily one of my favorite restaurants in the city. It's super tiny (be prepared), but I love the variety of game meats on the menu and everything is typically delicious. I'm a red meat kind of girl, the wilder the better. My party was SUPER tardy, but we never felt rushed by the server, which was fantastic. Other than the slightly lopsided table, the dinner was pretty perfect."

  • "Tiny little place, seats about 20. Delicious thoughtfully prepared food. The duck was wonderful, the pear starter was delicious. Wine is affordable. Service attentive and friendly. Love it."

  • "The food is robust and not low cholesterol. First bite of each dish excellent but lack of finesse become clear later. Service is lovely and no corkage fee on Sunday"

  • "I like the rustic, old-world, feel of this restaurant; it is small and charming, and not too noisy - something else I like. The Pheasant Pâté (served warm with crostini) was amazing. I had the Wild Boar Chops, and my girlfriend had the Smoked Duck. We each tried both, and thought that they were delicious. We each had a glass of wine, which was very reasonably priced, and very well selected. I am looking forward to going back to try more from the menu."

  • "Food is a little on the rich and heavy side. Greasy, melts cheese on appetizers was a little overpowering. And the smoked duck was a little dry. Otherwise, pretty good. I felt like I ordered the wrong dishes, but I probably won't return to try the rest of the menu."

  • "Quite small but outstanding addition to lower east side dining. Unique fare including wild boar, ostrich, bison and pheasant. Highly recommended for those who like to move slightly beyond the ordinary."

  • "I found The Gentleman Farmer through Open Table and our party was not disappointed! I saw that other reviewers had described the ambience as 'romantic' so I figured it would be somewhere where we could all hear each other . The food was wonderful--rich, but not overdone and beautifully presented. Our waitress was attentive and friendly. I would definitely return here for a special evening!"

  • "This restaurant canceled my reservation after I ate there so I couldn't write this review. Unsurprising considering how bad our experience was. My friend and I both ordered some sort of truffled pasta dish. When it arrived, whatever was on the pasta was not a truffle, I assure you. To make matters worse, the sauce was painfully sweet, and when my friend inquired about the truffles, a waiter condescendingly told us "You don't understand, those are black truffles, they are a lot less intense than white truffles." Leaving aside the questionable accuracy of the statement (winter black truffles have a distinct flavor - these tasted like wet cardboard), the condescension earns the 1 star for service. Avoid this place at all costs."

  • "Found this little gem through an online search for something available on Christmas Day. After a brief review of the menu and the adorable smallness of the restaurant and the rustic look from the pictures, I knew this was the spot! Upon arriving we were pleasantly surprised there was a Prix Fix menu available for Christmas along with the full menu. The meal began with a glass of Sparkling Hard Cider, a choice of Appetizers/Soups, a delectable & interesting Salad, main entrées ranged from standout choices such as Stuffed Partridge, Ostrich, Filet, to several fish choices. Dessert was also included and was delectable. I would highly recommend this little Gem!"

  • "food was excellent, as was the wine list. However, the place was so small and tables cramped together. We were basically seated in the aisle and everytime the waitress served something, she banged into my chair."

  • "A great spot In a quiet neighborhood with no notable restaurant. Away from all the happenings, so you can really relax and feel lucky that you found the spot. For the small place, the menu was surprisingly rich in variations. Interesting protein choices including bison and ostrich. They have a few fish dishes as well, but the land options are definitely dominating. I had bison, and the dish had some great depth. I would definitely go back to check out the interesting menu. The service was OK. I had a reservation, but they acted like it was lost upon arrival. They didn't seat us immediately, and I was afraid they were going to turn us away. They got it figured out and got us seated in a couple of minutes. Whew."

  • "This little unassuming restaurant is tucked away on Rivington Street just east of Forsyth street. It's a very intimate spot with limited seating (you MUST have a reservation on weekends). The interior is simple and rustic with charming decor, soft warm lighting and perfectly selected music (indie rock/folk). We ordered the bison tartar, goat cheese salad and split the bison ribs, everything was amazing – you can tell the chef is a passionate artist who truly loves his craft. The service is wonderful, with a friendly, knowledgable staff. If you have the chance, definitely check this place out with a special someone!"

  • "This restaurant is a great find! I bit of a "hole-in-the-wall", with very few tables, but that adds to the great environment. Also, the food was phenomenal and very reasonably priced for the quality!"

  • "First off, as a service industry veteran, I notice everything during my dining experiences. Saying that, I must commend Gentleman Farmer on what was one of my best, if not the best, dining experience I've had in NYC. The food was enlightening, all the flavors bridged well, and for what the prices are, an absolute steal. Our server Karim, (Kareem?) was an absolute treasure, and Gentleman is lucky to have him. The place is small, intimate, the music outstanding, so do yourself a favor and please visit this neighborhood gem."

  • "Great food, highly recommend the bison Tar Tar. Went with a group of 4, and we shared apps and entrees. Bison Chop, Lamb, Quail, and Filet were all excellent and the bottle(s) of Cotes Du Rhone was very good and affordable."

  • "No more than 10-12 tables in this small neighborhood restaurant, and one server, sommelier, preparer - also the owner. Appetizers were heavy on the pate and tartare, would have liked to see more variety there, but the salmon tartare was delicious, very tender and just the right amount of dill. Very nice wine list, especially by the glass. Service attentive but the restaurant was only 1/2 full at the time, not sure what it would be like when full, perhaps he has another staff member come in. I would highly recommend it, I also had the duck salad which was wonderful, just the right size and generous amount of duck without being overwhelming - a light option for late night dining."

  • "I brought two friends who are big on the culinary scene and they wanted to lick every plate! They just changed a pasta recipe from making it in house to an outside vendor ... and it wasn't good. Dry. Hard.. That was a bummer! Don't skimp. The food and wine are so wonderful, hand make the pasta! See you soon. Service was exceptional. So friendly and inviting. A must go to."

  • "Worth checking out. The night we went was very slow for them, but I'm sure it would fill up quickly. Great date spot where both ladies and gents can be happy with their order. Inventive menu and the staff was happy to tell us specifics on each dish. Try the ostrich steaks rare."
