We first started coming to Genoa over 30 years ago and just had to eat here on the last night. It was a dining experience that is unrivaled in any of the newer and lauded restaurants. The food was delicious and beautifully presented, the staff was attentive but not obtrusive and the ambience was wonderful. It was so quiet that for once we did not have to shout to be heard which is the case for 99% of other establishments. We will miss this lovely place.

Genoa is one of Portland's iconic and best restaurants. Genoa is closing next week. I can only hope that what comes in her place is as wonderful! The food at Genoa is superior (bar none). The service impeccable, friendly and knowledgeable. The wines are supreme. After dining at Genoa since the 1970s, I am once again saddened by it's impending closure. Genoa, I hope to dine with you again. Thank you for many years of memorable and delectable meals.

  • Waiter was off-putting, dismissive

I guess he was miffed at us. My wife had to take an urgent cell phone call from out daughter. It was then that our waiter first approached us. I apologized to him - told him it was urgent, and he seemed to understand, and then left. I guess that set the tone for the evening. He didn't re-approach us for about 15 minutes (it was 6 PM -- only two other tables were occupied, and they had been there a while). We could see how he and the other wait-staff treated to other customers (as more came in as the night went on). He was curt, and rushed with us. Very off-putting. The food was great. The service was low class. For that alone - I will not recommend Genoa.

I've been to Genoa for several years now, on both special occasions and simply good eating safaris - I've not been disappointed once. I rarely write reviews, but for this one I must - there is no other place in Portland with the elegance, the service and the food to match. Thank you Genoa!

I had my first experience at Genoa over 15 years ago, and it was a truly amazing dining adventure. Wonderful food, impeccable presentation, great culinary knowledge and unbelievable service delivered by the staff. Over the years, I've traveled much and experienced many other great restaurants. I still rate Genoa at the top. I received their email last week, announcing the pending closure, and promptly made my last reservation. My dinner experience was all that I expected. The food is still phenomenal. The staff is wonderful. The ambiance is perfect for a quiet intimate dinner. I can only hope, like last time, they re-open in the near future and continue stamping their mark on the Portland culinary scene.

We an absolutely incredible dining experience. This may get the most expensive dinner we have had but it was worth it. Excellent service, the most creative food and wine pairings that were fabulous. Portland will lose a gem when they close the doors. I suspect something will come back but maybe that is wishful thinking. So happy we had one lady chance to enjoy the excellence.

I go out to a fancy restaurant about every month, and this is the best I've found so far. The food is excellent and well worth the price, and the servers are knowledgeable and went into detail about every paired wine they brought us. The atmosphere was great, too. I would highly recommend this place.

We celebrated another anniversary at Genoa on 4/12, two years after the last one we celebrated there. The experience was just as good as we remembered. The dining room is perfect --intimate, quiet -- and the food exquisite. Every dish was a work of art AND tasted good. We did the wine pairings, which was a treat because we got to taste some wines we probably never would have tried and they were outstanding.

If you want Italian food, go to Ava Gene's or Mucca Osteria or even Riccardo's. Genoa No Longer Serves Italian Food. On its website, Genoa states Jake Martin (it's new cook) is "modernizing and elevating the fare at Genoa, but will keep the cuisine rooted in classic, Italian multi-course tastings." What Martin is plating is incredibly pretentious. Martin is out of his element. Martin needs to plant his feet on the ground and get over himself.

We loved the gorgeous presentation of our small food on large plates and set menu. I find it relaxing to have so few choices to make, especially when everything is delicious which it surely was. Our server seemed not to really have time for us even though the restaurant was not very full. Maybe it had to do with the $29 March menu or maybe he treats everyone that way but it seemed like he was phoning it in. It was a nice experience, overall.

We chose Genoa for one of our Portland dining month restaurants. We ended up choosing the 5 course meal instead of the special. We were not disappointed. A few of our favorites were the first course steak, the Sea Bass, and the coffee dessert. I had the wine pairing with my dinner. It was nice to have each pairing explained to me as the course was served. A few missteps with the food were the tuna (we expected something different than was served), the beet salad lacked flavor and the capellini was overly salty. The service was impeccable. While we thought the price was a little high, we enjoyed the overall experience and would return for a special occasion.

I used to go to Genoa about once or twice a year for the seven course meal, mostly on special occasions. Dining at Genoa was always special occasion in of itself. The food was always of the highest quality, and the service excellent. For a variety of reasons, I hadn't been there in about seven years, but took advantage of March dining month to revisit an old favorite. I was very happy to find that the dining experience at Genoa is still a culinary delight. Every dish was wonderful and the service remains beyond reproach. Perfect. I'm very happy that Genoa seems to have survived the economic recession. In recent years, An evening at Genoa is a somewhat expensive proposition, but never a disappointment.

My husband and I took our son and future daughter-in-law here last weekend…. from A-Z it was a wonderful evening. We ate off of the Portland Dining Month Menu (3 courses for $29). They offer both a meat and a vegetarian option. Two of us went with the vegetarian option and the other two went with the meat courses. They offer a wine pairing with it….. um…. yes please! The meal was beyond delightful. Service was perfect. Couldn't have been a better experience.

The plates were very small; pasta fabulous, the meat dishes - not so much. Wine was excellent. It was Portland Dine Out menu, but it felt like they were skimpy and without a dessert, or wine included - It didn't invite me back. I thought this was the chance for a very fine restaurant to get some of us in who might not come in otherwise. I just didn't feel the love and probably won't go back.

So....having heard so much about this place, my husband and I were super excited. The wine pairing was perfect and 80% of food was delicious. Unfortunately for the price, we could have gone to soooo many other places had better food and spent WAY less. The experience was lovely, but unless you have a large disposable income. My boyfriend and I reserved a table here for his birthday. The prix fixe menu has options for meat-eaters, pescetarians, and vegetarians. Every meal I've had is wonderfully thought out and incredibly tasty. The restaurant was busy but the waitstaff was still very attentive - our water glasses were never empty for long. They even put a little candle on the dessert and wished him a polite Happy Birthday. It could be considered on the spendy side, but, in my opinion, its well worth it for a special occasion. We really enjoy ourselves whenever we go.

Loved our experience at Genoa. It was our first time, and we had heard such great things, we were unsure if it could live up to our expectations. It was even better. The wine pairings with the different courses meant we tried and learned about 8 different wines. Our server was the right balance of attentive friendliness, very well educated about the wine and food, but he wasn't hovering or overly present. We were celebrating our anniversary, so it was just right. We look forward to returning. A note on the food and wine pairings, on one of the courses the wine that was brought was clouding and very different from anything I have had, but I liked it, and with the nettle sauce in my gnocchi, it was brilliant. The sommelier amazing!

My fiance and I went here for out anniversary dinner, so we really wanted to enjoy this place. While the cuisine is good, it's way over-hyped for the price. The food is very clean and well presented, but the whole experience was lack luster. The decor is very lovely, though when we were there the lights kept flickering, and the service was mediocre for that level of restaurant. My finace and I chose the typical 5 course dinner; my best description is that the the food is high quality and stripped down to its most basic elements, but does not go beyond that. In my opinion, though Le Pigeon is more of a cramped atmosphere, their food is far superior to Genoa. It wasn't a bad experience, but certainly not worth $100 per meal.

Elegant & formal at once yet comforatable & intimate, attention to all details, world class wine expert, impeccable service, stellar plating of each course and enthusiastically described by wait staff, locally sourced as practical & available, perfect location for any cerimonious dining engagement or for true food & wine (even cocktail) enthusisasts. I marked noise level moderate as there was no auditory/musical distraction from the pure pleasure taking place in my mouth~the vibe was in fact energetic as in: many other pleasure seekers were also rewarding their tastebuds. We hadn't been to Genoa in years and we found it even better than it used to be--redecorated so that it is brighter and less dated, and with more selections in each part of the fixed-price menu. The wine list has some little-known treasures, the service is attentive and personal without being intrusive, and the food is uniformly wonderful. This is a special-occasion restaurant--don't try to combine eating there with another evening activity. We spent a delightful three hours and enjoyed every minute. It's expensive but worth it.

We were able to speak in a normal volume and not compete with a loud and noisy restaurant. The staff were very kind and knowledgeable. The were well versed in both the food and wine offerings. Thinking Genoa was a once-in-a-lifetime extravagance, my husband and I were thrilled to be able to sample this restaurant during affordable Portland Dining Month. We went early so it was quiet and intimate. Each of the three courses was a delight. My only disappointment was that you cannot order from both the traditional menu and the vegetarian menu. The traditional menu is so much meat/seafood/duck and NO vegetables. If doing it over again, one of us should have ordered the traditional and the other the vegetarian...and shared. Then we could have experienced six different courses!

We are fairly new in the area and still exploring and found Genoa through the Portland Restaurant March Dining Promotion. While the offer was great ,we noticed an item on the regular weekly 5 course menu that we love, so we decided to go to get that. In my reservation I noted we wanted to make sure this dish was available since it's hard to find (Vitello Tonnato). A while later I received a call from the restaurant that they had set aside two plates for us because actually they were just taking it off the menu. The food was wonderful! The Vitello Tonnato was different than the classical but fantastic and the of our meal followed this quality and attantion. We felt the love of food coming out of that kitchen. We will go back!

Though we enjoy this restaurant, the food is not as we remembered it in the past. It was a bit 'out there' this time, where as in the past, it was fancy but not technically complex. We've always enjoyed the richness of the food but our last experience was less than we'd hoped. The prices have gone up and it took us over 2.5 hours to get through everything. We like taking our time but this was a little too long, and we weren't willing to drink ourselves into stupor to pass the time. For the price, it was not worth it this time. We may be back, but we may also spend our money elsewhere since we are spending so much.

I didn't enjoy the experience when comparing the price to value ratio. The first dish was a small scoop of something with a foil of chocolate. It tasted salty and sweet. I'm glad it wasn't a large portion because I really didn't know what to do with it. All the portions were small in quantity. If I got a lobster it was about a quarter inches wide in width and an inch long. I do have to admit the dishes were all pretty visually, but I didn't like how any of them tasted. The service was very good. Each dish was served in style with an explanation of how it was prepared. Total cost $250 for 2. It was my girlfriend's birthday. I would not recommend nor go back.
