Diner Reviews
  • "Since 1941, Gene and Georgetti have been providing Chicagoans with the best food around!"

  • "This was our first time at Gene & Georgetti's, and it exceeded our expectations. The food was great, the staff was totally on top of their game, and the atmosphere was terrific. Plan on spending more here than your average steakhouse, but it's worth every penny!"

  • "This restaurant is way over rated. The meat is charbroil to the extreme giving a taste of carbon. The patrons are bothering the server by their presence and the ambiance " what ambiance " the setting is cafeteria style."

  • "We frequented Mortons Steakhouse until they sold to Landrys and quality went downhill. Gene & Georgettis definitely is a more enjoyable steakhouse. Grilled calamari appetizer was excellent-just the right amount of seasoning. House salad is nothing special but a good tasting vinaigrette. Great steaks.Plain and simple. Steaks were cooked to perfection.Everyone was pleased with their selection of filets, peppercorn crusted filet, bone-in ribeye, and skirt steak. Sides were large enough to share-good sauteed mushrooms, sauteed spinach, and crispy potatoes. Save room for dessert. Order the tiramisu and mint chocolate ice cream. Skip the cheesecake and chocolate cake. We would love to go back and try some of their Italian food."

  • "I was rather disappointed with the overall food. Onion rings were soggy and the spinach and garlic was dry. My veal chop was very good, but I have had better. My son's steak had to be sent back for more cooking. My daughter loved her pasta. I rate it in the middle. Food was good, but will not be back."

  • "G&G's never disappoints! No need for menu, ask for bone-in rib-eye from dinner menu (if there for lunch). You're day will hit it its apex!"

  • "I'm in Chicago for the AIA Convention and brought my most important clients (my salesmen) here for a great evening. I've been here many times over the past 35years and it's as good now asit was then. Great for family meal or special occasion."

  • "I am 46 and my first visit to Gene and Georgetti was when I was 10. It's nice to know that some things never change. The food, the service, all outstanding and professional. I have come to Gene and Georgetti's for business, dates, and just cocktails. In a steak world of large chain companies where they bring you beef on a platter so you can be reminded what a cut of meat looks like, these guys don't insult your intelligence. Being in business almost 60 years is not surprising. Here's to another 60! Cheers!"

  • "Great food, great service! Cool 60s ambience- not fussy and prissy"

  • "We've been putting off this place for a long time but on Saturday we finally went to have dinner here. Our server was JJ. Amazing, friendly to the extreme, attentive and all you wish in a server. Wine was good, grilled Calgary perfectly tender, but I expected it just grilled with olive oil and lemon. Instead it has a sauce on it that I was not a big fan of... bone in rib eye was good, t-bone good, very good sides. Well I go again? Probably not with so many other options in Chicago!"

  • "I went with 6 friends and 3 of them had the $40 filet mignon and they were all disappointed."

  • "Alex is fantastic waiter and it was a special memory for our anniversary. Brought great great memories from my parents would take me. No fiber restaurant in Chicago"

  • "Great food. Steaks were amazing. Calf liver was out of this world (who knew). Service was spot on. Make sure you go by taxi to this place as there is no good parking to speak of, but definitely worth the trip."

  • "Plenty of food. Wish the sear on the outside of the filets was not so heavy."

  • "I've heard about Gene and Georgetti for many years and finally got a chance to eat there- definitely lived up to what I heard. Great steak, the sides were delicious, service was spot on, and really had that Old Chicago charm. Loved it all!"

  • "The food is still as outstanding as the service and ambiance. We will be sorry when these old-style Italian places are no longer; but are thrilled this one is still vibrant every time we visit Chicago. The classic Shrimp de Jonge is the best anywhere."

  • "If you want to find a great steak in Chicago - Gene and Georgetti's is it. Still awesome steaks, sides and good service"

  • "Gene and Georgetti is very old school. Everyone seemed to know everyone which was nice, but it smelled like cigar smoke inside. The prime rib was good, but nothing fantastic."

  • "This is a great restaurant for its food. The filet that we ordered was perfectly cooked and an outstanding piece of beef. The salmon was also perfectly cooked. We had a reservation for 7:30, but weren't seated until 8:00. The place was packed, obviously, and the noise level was very high, to the point of having to shout to be heard. With those caveats, we would recommend it and we would go there again. The food was outstanding, and the wine, although pricey, was great."

  • "We were disappointed with the service as we were not advised at how large the portions were and thus walked away with huge left overs cartons and big bill. Our waiter should have advised us that we were over ordering. Very disappointed with dining experience."

  • "...but the food was good. Went there for lunch and ordered the Greek chicken breast for $16. Basically that's what I got. Chicken breast on a plate. That's it. No veggie. No potato/rice. Perfect for paleo! But it's an old Chicago gem, and the chicken was really good so there you have it!"

  • "We got seated early. Sat for 15 minutes without menu or a server. Once he came he was great. Got our steaks. But they forgot our sides. 10 minutes later sides showed up. I prefer my sides with my steak. Wine list is poor. We ordered dessert and expresso,1/2 hr later still waiting, Our server came back and asked if we wanted anything. Hello our expresso and tiramisu! We got the check and just left. They were clearly under staffed Never got our coffee for our hour ride home. Steak is fabulous though. Left disappointed!"

  • "Newcomers to Chicagoland; the family tried the much-advertised Gene & Georgetti; in search of an Italian Eatery to replace our beloved Roma Cafe of Detroit. Not to be had at G&G. The establishment had a comparable, warm feel and ambiance; initial service was favorable. Food proved to be the undoing of our first visit. An important but fair note: we ordered 'traditional Italian' not Steak. '0' Flavor. I had had a Veal Marsala that was outright watery; swimming in a weak mushroom broth totally devoid of Marsala. another in our party ordered pasta in sauce (how simple can it be?) and received a dash of clumpy dry marinara. The same for an unspeakable Mostaccioli. Server's explanation: 'we're a steakhouse'! Then why Italian on the menu?"

  • "In general everything was wonderful, I had the broiled veil chop (1/2 order is plenty!) Which was absolutely incredible. On the other hand my wife had the filet which was in fact a bit disappointing - it was cooked perfectly, (medium rare) but the meat itself was on the dry side would not order that cut again"

  • "Like eating at your Grandmother's of she was not Italian! Pasta was not palatable. Steaks ok for $50? Would take the off your list of options!"

  • "The Filet Mignon cooked medium was perfect and among the best I have had. Even the "small" portions were humongous. The wine list is pretty impressive with a wide selection of cabernets to accompany the steak. Wines by the glass had very generous portions. The service was very courteous and attentive. The salad and the roasted potatoes that accompanied the steak were not that great, and influenced my rating of 4 stars instead of 5. I will definitely visit this restaurant again. "

  • "Served drink to my husband and brought me the same kind never asking what I wanted to drink. Shrimp DeJonge sauce was pasty and undercooked. Ordered chilean sea bass and received another type of fish, but charged for chilean sea bass. "

  • "A classic Chicago steak house that lives up to its reputation. Get the rib-eye--it seems have to have more flavor than the filet mignon. Sides are great, especially the garlic mashed potatoes. Try to get a spot on the second floor where's it quieter and with a great view of the El. However the whole restaurant has a great old-school Chicago ambiance. A must stop for any steak lover."

  • "Casual business dinner, good drinks and great steaks. The veal parm was the star of the show, but the steaks were absolutely perfect"
    Dined on 5/30/2014
  • "I had heard about this place having a great steak. I ordered the bone-in ribeye. It wasn't a bad steak, but nowhere close to the best I've had in Chicago. The prices were high for the quality of the food, even considering the downtown location. We asked the server if he would recommend pasta or steak - he was very honest to tell us that they only make one of the pasta dishes fresh, so stick with the steak. The atmosphere was okay for a business dinner, but not a place I would think of for a date or more intimate event."

  • "Best Manhattan we have ever had and the food was outstanding...just more than we could eat! Try the stuffed mushroom appetizer--Chicago style!"

  • "If you want to step back in time to the 1940s and experience the REAL Chigcago, you HAVE to go to Gene and Georgetti. You can't describe it in words, you have to experience first hand. The wait staff is AWESOME and the tasty good cannot be matched anywhere else. Gene and Georgettis needs to be on everyone's bucket list."
