Diner Reviews
  • "Gene and Georgetti continues to be a uniquely Chicago Italian steakhouse. It is an excellent place for lunch or dinner with great food, service and ambience."

  • "Pleasantly surprised by the fact they have been in business for over 40 years. Food, service, atmosphere were fantastic and the portions were unbelievable. "

  • "There was 4 people and only 1 was cooked right. The others we're burn on the outside but way to pink inside waste of 375.00"

  • "I travel the world and eat at many restaurants. This would have to be one of the worst meals my colleague and I have ever had."

  • "I ordered my steak medium, it was nowhere close. Rare, rare, rare! Our waiter seemed like he had better things to do. I was kind of disappointed."

  • "The food was amazing; we had the ribeye and lamb chops for main courses. The fried calamari appetizer was possibly the best calamari I've ever had. I will definitely be going back."

  • "These were some of the best steaks I've ever had. All the apps were fantastic, and our whole experience was phenomenal. The food is great, and our whole experience was amazing."

  • "Friendly staff, good service. Food is good, no question. It is pricey, but not really anything special. We had the filet and the seabass, neither one seasoned. The atmoshere is dated."

  • "Potatoes that I could not eat, a salad that was lettuce with 1/4 of a tomato and a plain, boring steak with no flavour. I would not recommend this place to anyone. They didn't bring my sides - but after I tried the food I wasn't going to push it because I didn't want them any more. The food here was appalling. The atmosphere was dark, old and cliched. There was nothing classic - just dated. The waiters were having a laugh when I walked in. I had to stand there for an awkward 5 minutes waiting to be seated - in an almost empty restaurant. Again - dreadful."

  • "Almost like your own private dining experience. Wait staff was superb. Food excellent.. But more than we could have eaten in two meals!"

  • "Food was great, service was ideal. Must stop place to eat every time in Chicago."

  • "This restaurant looks like a small little cafe until you go inside and realize how many rooms it has. Despite its size, it maintains an intimate feel. Service was wonderful, though it felt a bit rushed. That could be due to our early seating, just before the place was packed. Both our filets were delicious, though I normally order a medium temperature, here I would have gone up to a medium well. The cottage fries are so good! We ordered the steamed broccoli and were surprised when it was coated with butter. Oh, don't get me wrong, it was tasty, just know what you are getting. Don't skip dessert! Our waiter recommended the lemon cream cake and it did not disappoint! This is a classic steakhouse you will want to experience!"

  • "Great old-fashioned steak place. A Chicago institution - good steaks & sides."

  • "excellent food and service. What a steak house should be."

  • "Landmark restaurant. Decor had not been updated in decades....nor had the menu. Everything seemed old and dated."

  • "Had the NY Strip, Medium...Well prepared, worth the price considering the quality of the steak you get. Very tender, not much spice to it but good steak holds up on its own and this one did. Sides were large enough to share, got the garlic mashed and the potatoes vesuvio, both were very good, but the steak was the star on the plate. Also had the calamari appetizer, nothing speacial there. Good atmosphere, went on a Tues night and it was crowded but not over packed. Service is excellent, waiters are professional, top notch. If you are in the neighborhood and have the means, it is worth a vbisit, on par or better than the typical Chicago steak house. Bill fo r two with tip and drinks - $210."

  • "My friends and I met in Chicago for a few days and enjoyed a delicious lunch here. I loved the old school ambiance, the charmingly efficient white waist coated servers and the linguini with white clam sauce is certainly among the very best I've ever eaten!"

  • "Waited almost an hour to be seated , I know it was sat night but this is why you make a reservation ! It is devided to 2-3 dining rooms but it was very noisy everywhere and the tables are so close to eachother Feels very tight inside and it's hard to ignore the other people's conversations"

  • "I was hesitant to return to Gene & Georgetti's. In previous visits many years ago, there was an "in crowd" especially on Saturday nights and if you weren't in it, you could wait a long time to sit and service was mediocre. I suppose steakhouse competition and Open Table have changed all that. We were seated promptly and service was excellent throughout. The food was as I remembered it: Excellent. The menu is old traditional steakhouse, but everything was cooked perfectly, in more than ample portions, and served fresh out of the kitchen. We'll be back."

  • "Went based on all the outstanding reviews - nice homey place, great service and very good food. My rib eye was very good but have had better. Shrimp appetizer was outstanding"

  • "This was our second trip to Gene and Georgetti's - this time with our kids. They were made to feel at home and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The portions are enormous - consider a half portion. That said, it seemed like none of us could stop eating because the food was so good! I highly recommend."

  • "Everything was good and on point. Except for a few waiters that would squeeze behind you to refill water glass, or take your plate. Was really uncomfortable for my g.f's daughter when the waiters did that. JUST DIAL BACK and wait for you to be called to clean of the plates. Other then that love the place. Me and my gf will return for the huge T-bone and chillean sea bass."

  • "I wanted to book somewhere with a great reputation for first class steaks and was not disappointed. Even with a last minute change to diner numbers, we were very well looked after. In the immortal words of everyone's favourite Austrian "I'll be back"!!!"

  • "My daughter was going to order a filet and I planned on a T-Bone. After finding out the T-Bone was 30 oz (I could have eaten it 30 years ago), I cut the filet from the T-Bone and gave to my daughter and I ate the NY Strip side. It was a spectacular steak. Jose, our waiter, was always on the spot. Thanks Jose. I'll be back!"

  • "Gene and Georgetti is a Chicago institution. We had not been there for years. There are so many great steak houses in Chicago and our son had not been to this one, so we decided to try it. The prices are on a par with Chicago Cut, Mastro's and Keefer's, but the food was so-so. A wedge of iceberg lettuce and blue cheese dressing? Fine, but boring. Our son ordered the filet medium. It arrived extremely rare. When he sent it back, the waiter returned with the same filet, now charred on the outside, still rare in parts and dry as a bone. My husband's veal chop was extremely fatty. My veal with lemon sauce was good, not great. We won't be back."

  • "Ordered medium steak... they brought it out in 5 minutes... raw inside....cooked/charred about 2mm deep outside. I could have done the same on my BBQ while watching TV. The waiter was indifferent. I went there because it was "famous". One and done for me... there are much better steak restaurants than this one living on days gone by."

  • "My new year's eve resolution was inspired by the Chicago magazine's April 2013 articles about the top 20 steakhouses. Gibson's has always been a favorite of mine and was ranked #12. One steakhouse a month is the plan and Gene and Georgetti's was a on the mouth's of many as a gem. Great steaksand a lot of side choices that won't hurt the wallet"

  • "it was pack in there people standing up waiting to be seated were bumping into people sitting and eating, thankfully my wife and I didn't sit by that area. food was good service was good. If you like meat its the place to go."

  • "The food was poor, i ordered a steak and vegetarian pasta. The steak was tasteless with no self made sauce, they took out A1 sauce that goes with it. The vegetarian pasta was poor too, the peppers were cut unevenly and was big in size. It appears no thought was given when preparing the meal. The service was good, the waiters were very attentive and helpful, i was disappointed in the quality of the food given so many good reviews read online."

  • "Great briled rib eye! Excellent mignon and godo sisee portions!! Amazing service, you actually feel in a 50's Chicago movie."

  • "Impressed by the service. I did not know what to expect and was so pleased to find such relaxed atmosphere and really appreciated the down-to-earth people that work there. The food was perectly prepared."

  • "I had the eggplant Parmesan and it was too salty to eat. My husband had a strip loin which had little flavour and was grizzly. We didn't even half finish our cocktails or our salad and our main courses were on our table...not very conducive to an enjoyable meal."

  • "We booked this for a bachelor party dinner. The staff was very accommodating, and was able to provide us with a semi-private room. The food is old-school, top-flight steakhouse done right - EXCELLENT food, and generous portions. The steaks, lamb, and chicken ptarmigan drew raves from our group, as did the sautéed mushrooms (for such a conceptually simple dish, its astounding how many get it wrong. Gene & Georgetti nailed it - so amazingly tasty!). Service was timely and caring without being cloying. Overall, an excellent dinner, excellent venue, and HIGHLY recommended!"

  • "I have been going to Gene & Georgetti since the mid-60s and will go there whenever I want an excellent steak. My husband is a Nebraskan, so he knows steak; he also thinks that you cannot find a better steak in Chicago. Our steaks came to the table exactly as we ordered them. The service was friendly and efficient; we were shown in to our table as soon as we arrived. Whenever we want to celebrate a special occasion, we head for Gene & Georgetti."

  • "The food is excellent and the portions are enormous. We took home enough for another meal the next day. And the service was very good. But I will probably try another steak house the next time solely due to the noise level and crowded conditions. Management could invest a little in renovating the place -- it's getting to look a little old."

  • "Both my wife and another person in our party ordered the shrimp de jonghe. Both complained of the shrimp being over cooked and rubbery. Our birthday person ordered the Chilean Sea Bass and barely ate half due to the poor quality. I was led to believe this was a perfect place for a birthday. The service was great and the setting was wonderful but the food was average at best. Very disappointing."

  • "This place is everything you'd expect! A wonderful meal experience. We both had the small (8 oz) filet - absolutely delicious! Cooked to perfection - truly melts in your mouth! Service was impeccable! The only drawback was not the fault if the restaurant at all! A woman at the table next to our's was incredibly LOUD constantly! We heard EVERY word she spoke - and she spoke a lot! She talked about college, work, and the breast regulation of a friend - all in great detail! Again - not the fault of the restaurant, but not fun, either! We would definitely go back, though!!"
