Diner Reviews
  • "I've been to Gather at least 8 times, both for lunch and dinner. It's been uniformly outstanding, if sometimes loud and crowded in the evening. The last time I dined there was at least 12 months ago. I went there last Friday night and sat down early - at 6:30 - with my date. I chose an early hour specifically because I/we didn't want to be hurried. The waiter kept rushing us, even though we said we were going slow and the place was not full. We had to ask twice for share plates. The middle courses were okay, but both they and the mains were overcooked. For what it's worth, the manager Jody was great when we complained. Apparently this was the waiter's first dinner shift. I hope they get their groove back. Too good to let it go down!"

  • "My friend and I decided to check this place out since it was on Check, Please; it was well worth it. From waiter to food, we had a great experience. The highlight, food wise, surprisingly was the spicy tomato vegan pizza. It was complex and had depth of complex flavors. I'll definitely come back here to try out their other menu items, although it does change so I better come back quickly! Fun place to hang out with friends."

  • "The menu as always was varied and took advantage of fresh seasonal vegetables and fruit. The meal was perfect. Great restaurant for meat eaters and vegetarians as well. Something for everyone."

  • "When I arrived the staff settled me in to the table even though the rest of my party was running 40 minutes late. They were kind, compassionate and never lost interest in me. They eased my stay with a glass of wine, bread and olive oil and were quick to assist me while I waited. When the rest of my party arrived the meal went perfectly. Lunch was great, drinks and special orders were delivered with a smile and the food was quite good. The view of the hills and Berkeley is nice, parking was easy and even though the restaurant filled fairly quickly we were never made to feel uncomfortable, nor did we lack an attentive service. Great lunch!"

  • "Interesting dishes with complex flavors. The service was excellent. The waiter was personable, knowledgeable and efficient. We brought a friend who had never been to Gather before and she now has a new favorite restaurant."

  • "When I made the reservation, I specifically requested that they contact me so I could cancel if they wouldn't be able to accommodate my wife's no salt, low sodium diet. They sent me a confirmation email, so I thought they were ready to take special care of her needs. Nope. Our server's idea of accommodating my wife's diet was to promise her the chefs wouldn't further salt the brined chicken."

  • "We waited 15 minutes after our reservation time to be seated. Even though I'd requested a table near a wall because one of our guests is hard of hearing, we were seated out on the floor. Yes, this restaurant is in Berkeley, and Berkeley is casual, but for the high prices, I'd expect more attention to the diner's comfort. Although the food was interesting with many levels of flavor and some interesting ingredients, the portions were extremely small. We ordered pickled vegetables as an appetizer for the table, which cost $8. The portion was tiny: really enough for just one. A glass of mediocre Sauvignon Blanc seemed like just four ounces and cost $11. In short, expect a big bill."

  • "lots of gluten-free and vegan dishes. The rest of us ate quite well too!"

  • "I had remembered Gather fondly from previous visits as a place that featured local produce in creative ways, with lots of "vegetable-forward" options. Somehow this menu seemed heavier and less imaginative (despite it being summer). The kale salad was probably my favorite, made with slightly cooked kale. I tried a squash pizza which turned out greasy and salty, overwhelming any squash-ness about it. Perhaps I should have stuck with my normal restaurant routine of ordering just an assortment of starters... I think I was put off by the prevalence of fruit in the starter section. Still I'd go back, stick with starters and avoid the pizza. Lovely relaxed service, and nice it was open a bit later than other Berkeley restaurants."

  • "I have not wanted to visit Gather, worried about the Vegan-Vegetarian spirit and perhaps a singing server blessing me for my gratitude. It didn't happen. Gather is a sophisticated restaurant with quiet, intelligent servers, and best of all, original food which includes vegetables cooked in a new light. The flavors are new and delightful. The portions are small, but they are filling The desserts are superb. Wine and beer list is excellent. I look forward to my next visit which I hope will be soon."

  • "We have been going to Gather regularly for dinner for several years. Things have changed, no Vegan Charcuterie dish anymore, but the food is always innovative. The summer squash/basil/chevre pizza with some pancetta added to it was fabulous! The mussels with the aioli toast is truly addictive.... Slow roasted carrots was wonderful.... Very good service too."

  • "We went here for a birthday celebration. Good was very creative but as a GF vegan who doesn't like highly spiced food it was a challenge to find something to eat. The night we went a weeknight the menu had some plates that had too much food eg roast chicken and others the lentil/pannise plate that didn't have enough on the plate. For vegans it is hard to feel well fed and at $25+ for entrees that was a disappointment. The non vegans in our party were really happy and satisfied."

  • "I have been here a few times in the past year for dates and small get-togethers of friends. Gather has always had an outstanding selection of food for vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. I will be returning again soon."

  • "Service was generally disinterested and seemed significantly understaffed. Food was decent, but something didn't feel right. Thinking back, the entire meal was just a couple notches too salty. And I *love* rich, salty foods. But still, keep those cooks in line with the salt and the acid."

  • "On a hot day, to be greeted with instant water was a delight. The menu, emphasis on local, was creative, and vegan and gluten free items were clearly marked. The pizzas are large enough for two; ours had an unusual combination of flavors that worked very well together. Two criticisms: the chairs were extremely uncomfortable, and the noise level was just on the edge of uncomfortable--if the place had been more crowded, the noise would probably have been painful. Service was attentive and friendly, and we enjoyed the decor and the view."

  • "We loved our dinner. Delicious plate of fermented and pickled vegetables for appetizer; slow roasted carrot salad, mizuna salad, perfectly roasted chicken. I didn't love the various bitter sides under the chicken but I liked the polenta. The non-alcoholic ginger drink was perfect too. The blood orange drink, not so blood orangey so a deceptive name. Our waiter was very thoughtful and kept us on schedule for the play. It was a great dinner."

  • "Loved the cocktails which include shrubs. All our food was so good we shared bites so everyone could taste the dishes. I loved the Forbidden Rice--a great, satisfying vegetarian dish with so much flavor. Desserts were really good to. We also loved their sister restaurant, Verbena, in the city."

  • "Menu fairly limited and pricey. Service wonderful. Highlights were cocktails (inventive and delicious) and dessert. If I went back, I would probably stick with a pizza."

  • "Great for vegetarians AND meat-eaters. Each plate has depth and uses fresh, local ingredients. And they have a great drink list!"

  • "I've been wanting to come here for a very long time, so maybe my expectations were too high. I thought everything would be outstanding, but instead, things were fair to mediocre. The best thing we had were the mussels and burger, which was not what we came for! The kale caesar that everyone raves about was so bland. And with wilted kale in huge chucks, it was hard to eat. I was expecting something A LOT fresher tasting and crisper and more flavorful. I've had better kale caesars at lunch spots in downtown SF! The salumi plate -- with three kinds of pork -- was awful. AWFUL. And WAY overpriced. $18 for three tiny portions of inedible meat. (Okay, the one served on toast was yummy, but the other two -- yuck!) We couldn't even eat it."

  • "Paid 70$ for a 30$ meal. Food is okay, but definitely not worth the price. Will not return."

  • "Gather definitely reminds me that I am in Berkeley and not some other place where attention to the freshest, locally grown food is not always the highest priority. I was impressed by what I am sure were fresh, local grown vegetables. We had a hamburger (I know, how could we?) that was perfectly cooked and ridiculously delicious."

  • "My husband and I dined on Tuesday night, which should have been relatively quiet. However, this restaurant is so popular and so good that it was quite full. That meant tables set very close together, and a high noise level. Both of these factors were why Gather didn't rate 5 stars. We each chose a different red wine by the glass. The pours were reasonable in size, although pricey. The red "on tap" was actually fine both as a sipping wine and with food. Both of our dishes were delicious. The beet salad was one of the very best I've ever had. Beware, however, of the slight spiciness, due to a bit of chili oil. The Fontinella pizza was delicious. I'm a vegetarian, but my husband eats meat, so we asked for sausage on half. Perfect."

  • "Lovely lovely staff; very friendly and accomodating. The food - inventive, exciting and satisfying. We came with our 3.5 year oldm and really benefited from the fact that items on the menu were equally fit for a picky young eater as well two seasoned adult foodies."

  • "Fantastic meal. Was disappointed that the "Charcuterie" was no longer on the menu but our adorable waiter suggested dishes from the "Garden" section of the menu which was very similar to the charcuterie but larger portions, enough to share, unlike its predecessor. We ordered three of the dishes and they were all fabulous. We love this restaurant and usually always go before going to Berkeley Rep or the Aurora Theater. The food has always been great and the service is wonderful."

  • "The food was good, but there wasn't much variety on the menu. Swordfish was smothered in stuff that tasted fine but blotted out all taste of the fish. Noise level inside pretty high, but the patio is very pleasant."

  • "Good food, good ambience, good energy, but easy to talk. Recommend mussels, sausage pizza. Very limited, but quite good wines by the glass. Avoid the table next to the glasses, silverware."

  • "From the cocktails through dessert, we loved it all. Ordered: wild arugula salad, charcuterie platter, marinated beets, spicy tomato pizza, strawberry/citrus sorbet and chocolate/mint ice cream. And the service was very good."

  • "Pizza took 1.5 hours due to a problem with oven. Waiter suggested order for dishes, then they came out way differently. The staff were very friendly, comped pizza, however experience was not great overall. 2 hours for salads and pizza. Also they don't have veg charcuterie now, best dish gone."

  • "Had the kale salad. It was good, but really overpriced at $12. The beet salad was tasty but small and also expensive. The main dish, I think called "Panisse with chick peas" was delicious. Generous portion, unique, smoky flavors, excellent. Pistachio cake was very good, but, at the risk of sounding repetitive, over-priced, IMHO...It's a great place, but you have to be prepared for the prices."

  • "Whenever I have brunch at Gather, I always feel that I'm getting wholesome and handmade food. (Isn't it funny that some restaurants make you feel that you've received processed food?) I had the walnut leviathan French toast with walnuts and bing cherries. It was delicious, though, by the end of the second slice, my teeth were starting to hurt from the sugar in the syrup. But it was yummy. We offset the sweetness with a side order of bacon. Their coffee is bold and hearty, just the way I like it. I'll be back for my next wholesome meal here."

  • "I have wanted to dine here many times but have not planned it enough in advance as it gets booked up fast. We ordered the Marinated beet salad which was heavenly and the chickpea/lentil dish (I forget the real name) this had huge flavor! It was plated rather oddly- all the food to one side of the dish but the flavor WOW made me forget to ask why. My sister had the kale salad which she found to be unlike any kale dish she had ever had and the hamburger as she was curious what a sustainable burger would be like- she liked it very much. We were too full for dessert but ordered cappuccinos instead...the waiter lit a candle on my coffee saucer for a special touch. The caps were wonderful too."
