Diner Reviews
  • "You might believe you'd just stepped into a Paris Bistro, other than the English speaking waiters and lack of pretentiousness. Old world tile walls and wooden tables, great wine list and excellent food. We'll be back!!"

  • "The food at Gaslight is consistently good, and the ambience upbeat. And if you don't have a south end sticker they have a free parking lot. We have been coming here for years and it never disappoints."

  • "This is a typical good food French restaurant. Did not find it to have its own signature, may be just what I ordered (?) Good house wines. Very noisy, if you want a place where you can talk and hear each other it may not for you. Very reasonably priced. Eight people, with two bottles of wine, deserts and coffee was within $400."

  • "One of the best restaurants you can find in the South End. Great Menu, wine list, and the food was delicious. Bar area is a little cramped on weekend but I think that is expected. The bar staff was great and basically can make anything. For anyone traveling in my car there is a parking lot that is free for anyone dining there. Very close to route 93 too. Can't recommend a better place. I went Friday and Monday this past week!"

  • "I came here with the family for a birthday brunch and everything was fantastic! Cocktails, food, and especially the service was great! Moderately priced and a fun atmosphere. I'll be back as next time I'm in Boston again!"

  • "We picked Gaslight as a venue for our family brunch and were not disapointed. Great food, fantastic service made it a memorable occasion. Would go again."

  • "Excellent food, as usual, at Gaslight. Definitely a place we could go again and again. Awesome place to sit and talk and drink wine and eat good food with friends."

  • "Tasty brunch, loved the poaches eggs in red wine sauce with mushrooms and ham strips. Cozy atmosphere for catching up with friends. Attentive service. A neighborhood gem to return to time after time."

  • "Four of us went to Satruday night dinner here. SInce we had made an early (6:00 pm) reservation, we qualified for their fixed price dinner. What a deal! For $29, you get a nice glass of wine and a three course meal with choices from some of their best items (e.g., French Onion Soup. Steak Frites, etc.). They bring you a loaf of fresh briead which was very tasty too. And free parking in the lage open air lot next door! Nice ambience and good service. Ask for a booth."

  • "From the zinc bar to white tiles, the details of Gaslight where so impeccable that I felt transported to Paris. The food was very good and wait staff friendly and efficient. One of Boston's best restaurants for certain!"

  • "I brought my husband here for the first time as a surprise to celebrate his birthday. He was so happy when he found out where we were going because we have been wanting to try Gaslight for a long time! We got to the table and there was a birthday card signed by all the waitstaff that day at his place. Our waiter was very attentive (in a good way) and had great recommendations for food. We went for brunch, but we can not wait to go back for dinner! Amazing pastries, fantastic egg dishes, lovely service. I can't say enough good things about this place! Can't wait to go back!"

  • "Similar feel to Aquitaine (it is owned by the same restaurant group) with a very similar menu, to the best of my recollection. Everything we had was good and attractively served."

  • "I have gone two times now and it was great. Streak Frites was my entree and definitely no disappointments there. They also have a good selection of drinks. My only slight disappointment was around the cheese board. It was slightly better than what I could get at a typical (non-Wholefoods) grocery store but my expectations were higher than that."

  • "I always have a good time at Gaslight. Bryon, the bartender, makes everyone feel welcome. Michael, the manager, is great as well. While I usually sit at the bar to eat, sometimes I sit at a table and have found the servers to be good, too. It's a great spot for a casual post-work dinner during the week and a lively bar scene on weekends. Also, there's parking, which makes it the perfect place for meeting people who don't live in the city."

  • "A friend and I sought out a place for comfort food on a blustery March evening and we went to the right place. The staff was most welcoming and attentive and we couldn't have asked for more in the way of food and drink as we settled into the cozy French bistro setting with a boutique bourbon manhattan and steak frites. It was heaven."

  • "The atmosphere of the restaurant was fine; it seems to appear to younger (think 20's to 30's) crowd. The food was far too oily and heavy for a French restaurant. I ordered the duck confit after reading the online reviews, but it was far more oily (in a bad way) than its counterparts offered at other Bostonian French restaurants. My friend ordered the swordfish and found that it drenched in oil and just generally too heavy a meal. I would, however, recommend the clam and escargot hors d'oeuvres (two dishes) and the creme brulee. The best perk of the restaurant was the free parking in its lot. We had no trouble finding parking when we arrived at 5:30PM. Would consider returning and trying other dishes, first experience may have been a fluke."

  • "While we haven't sampled anything but the brunch, we've been there three times in two months. I love their brunch. If you go, check out the zinc bar - it's a one of a kind. This truly felt like a little French bistro. Bartenders are so friendly and knowledgable and the food is truly to die for. This is my favorite brunch restaurant of all time. Great mimosas and bellinis!"

  • "Very noisy. The food was good, but portions tiny. My husband had to have a snack when we got home. For the money I would go again."

  • "Our party of 3 women arrived on Saturday evening at 5pm. It was not crowded. We were escorted to sit at a tiny table at the end of a long row of tables for two. When we saw this arrangement, we asked for a booth. The hostess asked us to wait. She returned to say that "Many of the booths have been requested, so we do not have any available." We took the table but were very disappointed. We do not believe the restaurant would have done the same if we were three men! I kept my eye on a booth nearby that remained empty until we were leaving. We also saw a party of two women seated in a booth. In the future, if I ever go back to the Gaslight, I will know to request a booth. However, because of this experience, I am reluctant."

  • "We had made early reservations for the "Price Fix" dinner and arrived slightly late. Maitre "D, said no problem. Free parking was a bonus in Boston. Ambiance was great, bartender was very pleasant, server was terrific and food was great. The French onion soup was out of this world good. Overall, an extremely pleasant experience and I highly recommend Gaslight in Boston."

  • "Overall this is a wonderful French Bistro/restaurant. My only exception is very dim lighting and for those of us who are getting old we can at least use a little more light to read menu!"

  • "Went to The Gaslight intending to have the Dine- in Boston menu, but pleasantly surprised to see an equally good fixed price menu which we both enjoyed. Steak frittes was wonderful. Tables a little close together. The servers were helpful and pleasant. Parking was easy which is great in the South End. Would dine here again."

  • "We had to schedule an early dinner, and were surprise to see that they also had an Early-Dinner separate menu. What a delight to find that we could have a three-course meal including a glass of wine for just about $1.50 more over the cost of the menu they had for the restaurant week! We each order a different meal and they were all delicious and filling. We left satisfied but also full. It was surprisingly nice to see that as we left and I glance around the room I could see that the restaurant was completely full! I liked that it was doing such a wonderful business on a Tuesday night! Would not hesitate to dine there again."

  • "I went to Gaslight last night for our traditional girls' night out. The four of us had a booth table and it was comfortable. The setting, atmosphere and staff were wonderful. I loved that it was such a happening place that my group was able to be comfortably loud. It didn't seem to bother the surrounding tables that we were laughing and enjoying ourselves. The brittany cake is "OMG" worthy!"

  • "We were seeking a lunch spot that was a good hike from Beacon Hill. We did not know that brunch is served on Saturday, but there were several lunch items on the brunch menu. We were seated immediately despite an early arrival for our Opentable reservation and a restaurant already packed with neighborhood "Millennials." The salade nicoise was the best I've had anywhere, and the generous seared tuna portion was the perfect addition. There were reasonably priced, good wines, and the creme brulee I had was large, traditional, and excellent. Our server was friendly and attentive. Before we left, the manager introduced himself and promised us a booth next time. A booth would have been nice, but we were 1/2 an hour early, and our table was fine."

  • "Food was delicious. I was disappointed that the restaurant had changed one of its Dining Out Boston entrees after I booked the reservation. Nonetheless, the food was amazing, service was fantastic and I loved the ambiance. Its a great place for couples or groups. Cocktails were great."

  • "The waitstaff stood out. They were genuine, kind, and energetic. I'm not complaining about the food either! The warm french baguette with whipped butter was a great way to start our meal."

  • "The charcuterie and cheese plats were delicious and easy to share. The steak frites was delicious, and was served with the best bearnaise I have had. Amazing french onion soup…best ever! Ted, our server, was attentive and knowledgeable. His wine recommendation was spot on!"

  • "We very much enjoyed our evening out at Gaslight. The service was truly exceptional and the food was great (though the sauce on my dish was a bit on the salty side for me - it still had excellent flavor). We loved the interior design. We will definitely eat here again."

  • "Through Open Table, and my Android phone, we were able to book a reservation at the last minute at a time that was doable. We arrived ten minutes later and the reservation was in their system. Seated promptly, the waitress took our drink order and gave us the run down on our dining options: prix fixe or off the menu. Appetizers/salads arrived in good time and were superb. Entrees were delivered accordingly and were also excellent. We split the dessert from my wife's prix fixe dinner and left very satisifed, not over fed or stuffed. The noise level was quite tolerable and the place filled up quickly by 7:00. Free parking was a bonus."

  • "I discovered this brunch spot by chance and have been back twice in a month. Food is excellent and creative. Its by the Aquataine group that I have frequented often but this is definitely class apart in its brunch options. Good egg options with interesting, flavorful diversions. The pain au chocolate is amongst the best I've had in Boston. And the vanilla apple french toast is literally the best french toast I have come across so far. Service is by and large prompt. And the ambience is fantastic. Very high ceilings with the effect of parisien street lamps. Plenty of booths and tables to accommodate groups of all sizes. I recommend reservations else be prepared for about a 30 minute wait over weekends. And best part is the free parking!"

  • "We were first-time patrons at Gasslight, so anticipation was high. Our reservation was on the early side - 5:30 on a Saturday - and our party of four arrived a half hour ahead of time to enjoy a drink at the bar. Bar ambiance was enjoyable, as was the bartender. The restaurant was not crowded, except for a birthday gathering. So we were surprised when - at 5:30 - we were escorted to a booth in a far corner of the restaurant, right next to the kitchen area. We asked the host about alternative seating arrangements, and he said he'd get back to us. He never returned. Our selection of appetizers arrived promptly, as did the entrees. Not a bad choice in the bunch. The prices were middle-of-the-road, and the food portions were surprisingly ample."
