Diner Reviews
  • "It was our first time at Gary's and we were delighted to find such a fabulous place. We will be back and back and back. Thank you!"

  • "Gary's turned out to be a great experience for the four of us. After cocktails, we had Caesar salad and smoked salmon for starters. Both were excellent. My wife and I had the shrimp linguini dinner. Our friends had a lobster pasta dish and a veggie platter. Everyone enjoyed their dinner. Our server was very pleasant and accommodating. We found the bill for dinner and drinks to be very reasonable. We will return."

  • "Food was good, nice place for a business dinner, and prices are reasonable. Unlike some restaurants, you can actually have 11 people and be able to converse. Only issue was the service. Waiters were good, but the meal seemed to drag a bit. They were not busy, and it seemed to take quite a while to get our meals."

  • "Been here three times. The food isn't bad, it's middle of the road for a fine foodie town."

  • "Excellent food and ambience. Plus, the staff and management went above and beyond in their service to us."

  • "Gary's is not on the beaten path for Louisville restaurants but is well worth a deliberate trip. First floor has an elegant atmosphere, second floor is a bit more casual and has a nice bar with good bourbon selection. Food is excellent and service and attention, esp from Gary is second to none. Great place for a nice dinner."

  • "Gary's on Spring street's food is very good and the portions a good size for what you pay. The service is always friendly and the manager/owner always welcomes you to Gary's."

  • "Quaint and manager (?) was very nice. Our waiter was nice enough and polite but he was on auto pilot and rushing us. Started with a cheese plate, good - however, it was one note with three very similar cheeses. The remaining food was not very good. Bison rib eye, ordered med. and it came almost well done (only a hint of pink in the very center) and it was swimming in a sauce that separated on the plate - making an oil ring around the entire plate. Carrots (slightly overcooked) and potatoes had a nice flavor. Shrimp provencal - shrimp was overcooked and the sauce was so heavy, had to request lemon to add an acid to it. Tiramisu was mushy - no discernible texture differences between layers and $7 press pot was only luke warm."

  • "Gary's on Spring provided just the right setting for a group of ladies who have not been together for awhile. We had a lot of talking to do and the quietness of the restaurant was ideal. The menu was diverse and the food was very good, too. It was an enjoyable experience."

  • "This is a great place for a meal to remember. The portions are large and such a good variety in vegetables. Lobster Bisque is to write home about, so so good!!!"

  • "This was our 6th visit overall and have had tremendous food and service each time. This trip, we were with 10 friends (some some here, some Chicago, some Cincy) none of which had ever been To Gary's. They were all impressed and will all be repeat customers.................the greatest compliment one can give a restauarant"

  • "Joining friends for dinner, we wanted to try some place none of us had been. I'd heard about Gary's and decided to give it a try, keeping that in mind that it was a last minute decision on a Friday night. I made online reservations and also arrived early to cover our bases, and we were thrilled that we got a great spot in the dining room with no wait at all. Our meals were all fantastic, and we had excellent and courteous service. Afterward we enjoyed a drink in the bar upstairs. The atmosphere is comfortable, our total experience was excellent, and we will definitely be back again soon!"

  • "This place never disappoints. I always have a great time here and the food is amazing! The waiter got a bit overwhelmed do to no fault of his own but he was able to recover with his personality and offering us an extra deal on desserts."

  • "I have been wanting to give Gary's a try for a while now but I was little dissapointed. We went for 502 Week and we had to ask for the 502 menu and our server kind of acted annoyed by us asking for the menu. They stuck us upstairs in the bar area which wasn't near as nice as downstairs. The decor and ambience was just kind of bleh upstairs. The service was decent enough but not great and the food was good but I don't think it was anything special for that price. We will not be going back anytime soon."

  • "Everything was great; it is not their fault that the tomatoes are not in season to make the caprese salad with mozzarella wonderful. I am sure it will be when good tomatoes are in season. The mini hot brown is wonderful. I would go there for it alone."

  • "We had a wonderful dinning experience! This establishment has been in operation for about 3 years and I am just sorry we did not hear about it sooner! Add it to your list!"

  • "Food was wonderful. I had one of their specials: shrimp & grits. My husband had a filet. Both dishes were prepared perfectly. Service & ambiance was very good. I would recommend Gary's to anyone. We look forward to the next visit!"

  • "Gary's On Spring is tucked away not five minutes away from downtown Louisville on a quite residential side street, a large parked lot makes access to this hidden gem a breeze. When entering the charming dining room you will immediately be welcomed by owner Guy Sutcliffe or GM Greg Fearing and treated like you are family even if you are not one of the countless regulars who dine there on a nightly basis. With Chef Harold Baker creating magic in the kitchen you can't go wrong with any dish you order, from apps to desert it's all stellar. Top notch relaxed service, a thoughtful wine wine list, custom made cocktails (many featuring Kentucky Bourbon) and craft beers help to make the wonderful spot a place you will soon be a regular to as well."

  • "We had a nice date and the staff was very friendly. We will probably wait until summer to return because I hear the outdoor area is very nice. Only request is more vegetarian options and bring back the creme brûlée !!!!"

  • "Love going to Gary's on Spring because I know we will be greeted by the host and he will check back with us to make sure everything is okay. The service is always good and the food is always beautifully presented. While it was too cold to enjoy the outdoors on this trip the restaurant has not one but two beautiful outdoor areas. I particularly like the conversation area on the upstairs terrace."

  • "Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and recommended several entrees which we really enjoyed. The wine by the glass is reasonably priced. We've been to Gary's on Spring St. several times and always enjoyed the food and the friendly staff."

  • "Arrived on time for 5PM res. 2 people seated in dining room, we were taken upstairs to have dinner at the bar at a bar table. We said we'd prefer to sit in the dining room & after much confusion were allowed too. Host made "joke" that we could go to Spring St. Bar & Grill instead - maybe we should have. Our server was horrible - we may as well have been at Applebees. Unattentive, left for smoke breaks (came back smelling like ashtray 2 times). Walked away while we were still talking to her. Not of the quality of service to match the cost of dining there. Both of us ordered steaks (filet & strip). The filet was cooked medium rare (ordered medium) strip cooked medium (ordered medium rare). Offered to redo, we declined. Will not be back."

  • "The food was incredible! My husband and I went there for Valentine's day. The setting was very quiet, my husband thought it was too "stuffy." It's a very small restaurant. We sat at a table with one chair and a booth seat. The booth seat was very uncomfortable and too far away from the table. We were also VERY close to the next table. The service was good but nothing to brag about. We went upstairs to the bar after dinner. It was also very quiet, not much ambiance. The bartender was friendly but did not engage in much social conversation. Many of the employees gathered around and behind the bar, which seemed a bit unprofessional. Overall it was a good experience, but if it weren't for the amazing food, we probably would not return"

  • "My Valentine and I were at Gary's on Spring on February 14 expectilng a large and noisy crowd. Eventhough the weather was terrible, the restaurant was active. The surroundings are very pleasant and condusive to conversation; what a treat! The server was very good, but could still stand a bit of polish. The management was most attentive even to the point of helping my friend maneuver walking on icy slush to get to the car that I had pulled around to the door. The food was INCREDIBLE! DELICIOUS! BEAUTIFULLY PRESENTED! VARIED! and the mixed drinks were well done. What more could one ask for in a dinning experience? Hearts and Flowers to the chef and the management staff!"

  • "For Valentine's Day, we were excited to try something new to celebrate the special occasion. Our server seemed to be in a very big hurry. She was in a hurry to take our order and then to run away from the table as quickly as possible despite our attempts to ask her questions. We ordered the signature signature app, the meatballs. The flavor was good, but they were very crunchy and overcooked. My entree also had good flavors, but the crusting on my fish seemed burnt. Our dessert was horrible. We got the baked alaska and the cake was so dry it was horrible. The ice cream was fine, but the bourbon flavor was overwhelming on top of it all. I will never order baked alaska again after this experience. The experience put a damper on our holiday."

  • "Our first experience with Gary's was a pleasure. Greg is a wonderful host and has great stories to tell when he's not busy. We both had fish and the preparations were well done and very flavorful. Liked Gary's so much we are bringing friends back this weekend."

  • "We had a delicious dinner from beginning to end. The wine list was wonderful, the service great, the ambience was delightful! It is going to be a place we frequent quite often. Looking forward to spring and being able to sit outside on the patio!!"

  • "Great dining experience... Rated every category four stars... No one is perfect;) Both our orders came at the same time... hot Service was professional, friendly, and timely. Worthy of a return trip... And from the look of the crowd others felt the same way."

  • "We have enjoyed this restaurant on several occasions, but on our last visit, WITH reservations , they were overbooked and we were told we would have a long wait until we were able to get the upstairs table we had reserved. They did offer a table downstairs in the main dining room. Unfortunately, the noise was so bad in this large, tightly packed room, that we could not hear each other without shouting. We chose to leave and go elsewhere. This can be a delightful restaurant, but only if you eat upstairs. The noise downstairs lessens the otherwise extremely good dining experience."

  • "Gary's is one of the best restaurants in Louisville. It is a bit off of the beaten track, but the quality of the food and the attentiveness of the service makes it worth the trip. If you haven't been there, by all means go. Great chef prepared food at a reasonable price."

  • "Best sea bass ever. Thick piece, cooked just right. We had not known, until the manager spoke with us, that the section of sea bass affects the quality of the dish. Lobster Bisque was also excellent. One of us was unhappy with their order of Lamb en Croute. The staff immediately replaced the lamb with a second order of sea bass. One of best restaurants for quality of service (both Susan and the manager), well before replacement of lamb offered. Sorry that the manager's name has slipped my mind (well, I am 70). I called to ask but 12:45 must be too early on a Wednesday. We love to try new restaurants, and only get to Louisville (two hours away) a few times a year. Still, it will be difficult to skip Gary's on our next trip."

  • "Our party of 4 shared the hot brown on toast points. A perfect bite of hot cheesy delight. A decent bourbon list although they were out of our first choice, Noah's Mill. The 'Secretariat' bourbon cocktail was so great that I rushed out to buy Dumante pistachio liquor. Our favorite entrees were the eggplant and the New Orleans scallops which were perfectly cooked. The creamy, slightly spicy sauce was wonderful. The sea bass was deemed very good but not the best by our traveled friend. It should be noted that he did not leave a morsel on the plate. The disappointments were the pork chop which was very overcooked (though the collard greens were amazing) and the orange chocolate cheesecake which was very, very dry. I will be back."
