A word from Gari Sushi & Asian Bistro
Gari. Commonly known as sliced, sweet, ginger root, has been used for centuries as a side dish to sushi. This is because Gari is known to "Cleanse the pallet" or to rid yourself of the taste of the food, to better enjoy the rest of the meal. Gari has been said to contain natural pain relievers that may aid in ridding migraines or body aches including arthritis. Ginger has long been used as a natural treatment for colds and the flu because it has an abundance of antioxidants which aid in preventing sickness.

Our menu consists of many Japanese dishes and has a wide variety of sushi. We have many substitutions for vegetarians, or individuals with certain restricted diets.

In addition to our sushi bar, we have kitchen bistro, and Kushiyaki option (skewer grilled) which consists of vegetables, poultry and other non-poultry, meat options. This is a great option for customers who want to re-heat their food while talking and drinking.

  • "We live the neighborhood and had walked by several times before, decided to try it on a Friday evening. Good service, sushi was very solid. Not the fanciest place, but good neighborhood sushi option for Ukie Village"

  • "Gari's food never disappoints and it's usually quite easy to get into without a wait. I tried some of their vegetarian rolls and I was pleasantly surprised by how creative and delicious they are. The service is a little slow and off at times, though they are always pleasant. The prices are good and the food tastes fresh. I will continue to go to Gari!"

  • "Oh my goodness, this place was unbelievable! Possibly the best sushi in the entire city of Chicago, definitely the best that I have had EVER. First, the atmosphere was great. Low lights, some house music, warm wooden walls. The staff was amiable and eager to please. We tried several different rolls and each one was better than the last. My husband and I split the yellow curry and our friend had some beef soup (can't remember the name). Both dishes were excellent, but the beef soup was incredible. I would go back just for that. We also had the fried tofu appetizer which was stunning. And the prices are crazy reasonable. I can't wait to go back! You have to try it!"

  • "Food was absolutely amazing! I had a few sushi rolls. Not only were they delicious, but the presentation was impecable. My wife had the curry fried rice and it too was excellent. We found Gari Sushi on a whim and are so glad we did. The service was outstanding. We arrived very early (just after they opened for the evening) and the staff was pleasant, responsive, and proactive. The restuarant is BYOB. It is a small space, quiet and quaint. We will definitely be back."

  • "I didn't find anything too great about this place. It's really dark, the tables are very wobbly, the staff does look at you more than they should, and the food is just ok. For 3 people we spent $90 (including tip) and had 3 apps, 2 entrees, 1 roll, and 3pcs."

  • "Unfortunately, the evening we dined at Gari's their heating system was not working. The temperature outside was well below freezing and snow was falling. Heat was provided by two small space heaters. While dining, they attempted to block cold air at their doorway with stapling curtains at the doorway. Neither of these provisions provided much warmth. We ate with our coats on and the space heater next to our table. If their heat had not broken, I am certain our dinner would have been rated much higher. I guess this was one of those situations that can becomes difficult for any business owner."

  • "Two friends joined me at Gari for dinner on a Monday night. We were the only customers in the tiny modern space. The menu is extensive and though I had been craving noodles, I started with miso soup and we shared a seaweed salad and several rolls. Everything was fresh and delicious and service was attentive and friendly. At the end of our meal, we were given a complimentary dessert, which was an unexpected and nice touch. I look forward to going back to Gari!"

  • "Went for dinner on a Saturday night. 7pm dinner and it was empty. It smelled really strongly like a Japanese restaurant (hot oil cooking) but I didn't understand why since there was no one there to be eating what they seemed to be cooking? We just got rolls, with the intention to get more, but ended up just with the rolls after those were disappointing. The taste was OK, but the rolls themselves were very poorly made. They were hardly rolls since they immediately fell apart, making them really difficult to eat. BYOB. I would recommend any other sushi restaurant for rolls in the neighborhood."

  • "We went there on a rainy night and did not have the easiest time finding it since the sign was too small to see while driving. The server was friendly, though not the fastest to take our order. My take might have been made worse since the lady and I were very hungry at that point. The serving portions were decent and the sushi was pretty decent. We had some leftovers and the bill was respectable at $50 for 2 people. They even gave us free dessert (chocolate cake) which was a welcome respite. It was certainly a good experience"

  • "Great sushi and inexpensive! BYOB too! We had a group of 20 people and they don't require you to do prefix menu or order in advance!"

  • "Outstanding menu , unique maki combos elegantly plated. Very friendly and welcoming. Tiny place that will do incredibly well, and I fear will soon be impossible to get into once the word gets out how good it is"

  • "Food was above average and the service was very friendly and attentive. They have many, many items on their menu and some very interesting rolls. We will definitely be back to try more food! And of course it's great that it's byob."
