Diner Reviews
  • "Beautiful if not spectacularly so, but that's about it. Food is lackluster in taste and presentation. Service is slow. Go here once for the experience but be prepared to pay lots for just the ambiance."

  • "We came here for brunch and it was incredible. The food was top notch the the ceiling was incredible. Would highly recommend this place!"

  • "I enjoy taking out of town guests to the Garden Court. The entire experience sets the tone for wonderful San Francisco visit."

  • "Though the salads were mediocre, the bread and desserts were superb. Next time we'll just go for dessert! Such elegance but service didn't match it; had to ask for everything."

  • "A San Francisco must experience. One of the most beautiful places in the City.t"

  • "Edgardo, who was my server, at some point during our lunch, forgot about my wife and I. I had to ask the bus girl to bring us some soft drinks. I wonder if Edgardo got annoyed by this action because, when I ask for my chocolate cake, he answer in a tone of voice like if, he was being bothered. It was my birthday and, as a guest, I expected to be treated respectfully and nice."

  • "Wonderful food and experience, but too expensive! Would love to come back for a special occasion-if someone else foots the bill! KB"

  • "Great for a special occasion as the breakfast menu was pricey. Enjoyed the experience."

  • "Stunning garden setting even if the sun's glare can be bothersome. Hearty and light menu offerings but friends missed the "old" favorites."

  • "We were totally disappointed - we thought we were going for the brunch but the brunch did not start until 11:00 and we made reservations for 9:30 - there needs to be some sort of information on Open Table regarding that - when an 11 am reservation was not available I made a reservation for 9:30 assuming I was reserving the same type of meal - we were schocked to find out that it was not brunch at all - just a completely sub-standard breakfast buffet. It would be nice of Open Table to alert diners to that."

  • "My daughter and I really enjoyed brunch at Garden Court. There was a wide variety of foods, overall a good experience!"

  • "It was very early in the morning and I brought my client and colleague here for a breakfast meeting. It is absolutely beautiful inside. The price for the breakfast buffet seemed crazy, but it is inside a hotel, so probably normal. Great ambiance, good food, really lovely!"

  • "Visiting San Francisco for Christmas from Australia, we wanted a nice and memorable way to spend Christmas day. The Christmas brunch at the Garden Court was wonderful: There was a huge variety of foods, all wonderfully fresh and well prepared, the atmosphere was exciting and we had a truly wonderful time. This was a Christmas we'll never forget. The service was very friendly, and made us feel really welcome."

  • "Took my 7 year old daughter for a girls days in San Francisco. Our first stop was Brunch at the Palace Hotel Garden Court. We ordered off the menu and didnt do the buffet but it also looked amazing. My daughter drank her oj out of a wine glass and thought it was soooo cool. She even asked to go back for her Birthday!!:)"

  • "The BEST dining we have enjoyed in a long time. Service was excellent and the food was superb. I will remember this experience forever."

  • "nothing special about food, even less special than other brunch/breakfast places, but here you have to pay twice the price"

  • "My husband and I went for breakfast over valentines weekend just to do something special. The early buffet was $34 per person. The food was fine but truly just average. Similar to a nice marriott or embassy suites with slightly better selection. However the room is fantastic. The atmosphere alone is worth going!"

  • "Exceptional historic room, beautifully appointed. Unfortunately, my salad was sparse and did not live up to its description - therefore overpriced. Nice selection of warm breads and dramatic dessert."
    Dined on 2/17/2014
  • "food was adequate portion & fair, nothing extraoridinary - severely overpriced for breakfast! ( non buffet even on a Saturday). $17-$22 for egg dishes & $9 for a side of bacon that was mediocre at best. Wont return."

  • "There was a convention going on and one third of the restaurant was used by attendees talking and on computers. They were not eating. Others were eating in the restaurant and talking loudly. Very noisy and completely spoiled the ambience of this special occasion for us."

  • "It took a while to receive our food but overall the food and the experience was great. It was my first time eating here and I plan to return for business lunches."

  • "The Garden Bistro at The Palace Hotel has the best brunch EVER! Yes, it is pricey, but absolutely worth every penny! The food is extraordinarily prepared and the selection unprecedented. Everything from the sashimi and oysters on the half shell, to the cooked fishes and meats. Everything is delectable, fresh and perfectly seasoned. And one's champagne glass is topped off constantly. The ambience is gorgeous with the old style, historical architecture and the beautiful skylight; the tables are fitted with linen table clothes, napkins and real silverware (which is replaced with each emptied plate). And one can linger and talk and sip champagne and enjoy all the delectable items in a comfortable, friendly and luxurious setting."

  • "Great setting, way over-priced. Service is indifferent."
    Dined on 1/29/2014
  • "The ambiance of the Garden Court is old world beauty bathed in light from the beaux art windowed skylight ceiling and the room is elegant. The lunch menu needs some lighter options, appetizers or side dishes and one more sandwich choice --- The salads are good but one does not always want a salad. If you want a dinner style entree you will be pleased."

  • "Had a nice business lunch here. The menu offers a nice variety of choices and the service was good. I have eaten here a few times and enjoyed it each time."

  • "The Garden Court is always a delight. Such a wonderful space with food and service that never disappoint."

  • "The service was wonderful with a veteran server who had so many great stories to tell about the hotel. The food though was not top notch. I ordered a cowboy steak medium rare and it came well done. The server apologized and whisked it away to have a new one cooked for me. Of course, everyone else at the table tried to wait to finish their meal while I waited for the return of my entree cooked properly. That is unheard of at a five star place."
    Dined on 1/11/2014
  • "Exceptional service and atmosphere, with quality teas. However the afternoon tea foods were not made to order and some of the bread on our sandwiches was stale/dried out, so it really showed. Otherwise fantastic experience!"

  • "Beautiful restaurant, and food was wonderful - even had a great server, but 2 minutes after we sat for a romantic time and conversation, with hundreds of open tables, they seated to older women next to us 6 inches away. Ruined our privacy and our dinner- we tried not to listen but worse we couldn't talk to each other - it was as if they joined us for lunch against our will. Moving seemed rude and no one attended to is after the initial order and food delivery - next time I'll make sure I sit where I'm comfortable - $100 breakfast for two was outlandish but it's a beautiful place. I was visiting from Miami - not sure if I'll go back."

  • "The room is very beautiful and dramatic and would be great for receptions, events and lunches with ladies, in-laws, and the like. Food and service is solid hotel grade but not for foodies. The nearby bar is a more masculine room."

  • "Confirming what others have said... almost unbelievable setting... truly breathtaking. It reminds me of the restaurant at the d'Orsay museum in Paris... only more impressive. At lunch, food is very good but not really great with selections being somewhat conventional. Prices are high, though not rediculous, given the setting. I'll look forward to returning for a very special occasion. If you're considering for that special someone or special commemoration, go!"

  • "The setting for our New Years Day brunch was like something out of an old movie---absolutely gorgeous, old-time rich, opulant, elegant. The Palace Hotel put on the best brunch we have ever experienced...the food selection was divine, and the champagne/mimosas just kept on coming, meaning our more-than-charming waiter made sure our champagne flutes were never less than half-full. A fantastic way to enjoy a slow, relaxed brunch. Bonus was beautiful piano music coming from a grande in the room, followed by a quartet...certainly the experience was worth every penny."

  • "We enjoyed our birthday brunch in the beautiful Garden Court---it was a lovely setting for a happy occasion!"
    Dined on 1/2/2014
  • "Food and atmosphere were great but the service was not so good. It appeared that the restaurant was woefully understaffed; we did not see our server that much. One drink order was not filled and we waited a long time for our bill, even after requesting it."

  • "We had a relaxed lunch at the Garden Court. Their team approach to service is very helpful, any of the servers or managers may take your order or bring the food, and they are attentive. We told them not to hurry us, as we wanted to relax with our cocktails, and they just waited for our signal. My wife ordered soup, but I didn't. When they brought hers (delicious Tuscan kale), Amado brought me a small sample, properly plated, so I could taste what she was having. How thoughtful! I had the Brandt braised beef on polenta that made me sigh with happiness, and my wife's ahi tuna Nicoise was wonderful. Nice wines by the glass are offered, and overall the prices are reasonable for a major city."

  • "Entertaining out of state visitors and with reservations for breakfast Buffett our wait was almost 20 minutes. The service was slow, our table location was bad, and the food was cold. I should mention that the place did not seem to be crowded or busy. This was a very pricy bad experience. I would not recommend it."

  • "My family had Christmas Brunch at the Garden Court. This has become a tradition as all the women in my family no longer wish to cook a big meal. The ambiance and food is first rate. It is not cheap, but it is good value for moderate to full eaters. The food and variety is excellent. The staff is attentive and the Christmas decorations are elegant."
