A word from Garcon
Welcome to Garcon! Garcon encapsulates an old-world French bistro with a casual and friendly atmosphere like one would find in France. Chef Arthur Wall delivers a stylish interpretation of French classics like coq au vin, mussels, duck confit and French onion soup. A New Orleans native, classically trained at the Winsdor Court Hotel, Chef Wall has always loved French cooking but with the resources and setting of the west coast. He sources the freshest ingredients, cooking in the seasons and changing the menu daily. Garcon offers a diverse selection of local and old world wines, local oysters and cheeses as well as daily prix fixe and holiday tasting menus. Access to private lounge offset from main dining allows people to engage in intimate conversation and parties as well.
Garcon also offers a 3 course Chef's menu all week. BON APPETIT!

Diner Reviews
  • "Arthur Wall's food is amazing. High class and traces to his New Orleans roots. Wine list is wide and very reasonably priced."

  • "Came here because my husband is a fan of roasted octopus, and Garcon had it on the menu. Had never been here before, but after last night, we'll be back. I had the hangar steak, but wish I had ordered either the duck, pork, or lamb. The meat purveyor is first-rate, that's all I know. Little bonbons for dessert - lovely! Great service, very French. And my husband loved the octopus dish, although it was only an appetizer and not a main as I had hoped. Good wine list, too. Still, wonderful evening. I reserve my "Fives" for Michelin Star level (not that I've had many meals at those kinds of places!), so straight "Fours" are top-notch with me."

  • "We've chosen this restaurant at least five or more times over the past few years. The food is always exceptional, the case again this past Saturday eve. However, the wait for our entree was much too long. Perhaps, it can be chalked up to the fact that two parties, one of eight, another of ten were dining at the same time. At one point the chef, came to the tables and apologized for the wait. Classy, for sure yet we had tickets to a performance nearby and what we hoped would be a leisurely dinner was anything but. The restaurant is more noisy than we remembered--difficult to converse without shouting at the person across from you."

  • "We liked the liver pate but did not like the snails. Overall, the food was good."

  • "I have not been here in a couple of years and the food has gotten even better. Some of the best onion soup I have eaten including those I ate in France. The menu offers a variety of choices and there is a good wine list. The pork tenderloin was cooked to perfection. The portions were ample. The staff was attentive and you could actually carry on a conversation without shouting. I would highly recommend Garcon"

  • "the hostess was super friendly, the food was great, the waiter was.......kind of unfriendly. the other people working there were also super friendly. perhaps we just caught this particular guy on a bad day... the burger was excellent, as good as my favorite burgers in the city so it will get added to the list. the menu was really interesting and there are a few items i will go back to try. we also had the crab salad which was great as well. overall it was a good dining experience."

  • "This symbolizes a typical French Bistro that serves great food and drinks. Found this gem on Open Tables and we felt like having French (since we are known back home as Francophiles). The energy was vibrant. The staff was all very attentive with constant water refilling, changing of flatware (a must in my book), and perfect timing of drinks & the meal. Two items highly enjoyed was the bone marrow and the escargo with gnocchi. Both most delicious. Dinners were perfectly cooked to temp. Service from our Brittany France waiter was superb! Nice wine list too. Not the cheapest place in town, but definitely worth the value for what you got. It will be recommended time and time again by us. Thanks for a lovely experience!"

  • "Service was outstanding as always. Food would deserve high marks except for two serious errors: (1) The potatoes served with the steak frites had been frozen after cutting, or they had been cut and stored for too long so they were hard and chewy. The waiter took them away and returned promptly with fresh ones, but this should not happen in a French restaurant. (2) The fish (white bass) was overcooked to the point of being inedible, in spite of the fact that we had asked for it "very rare." I did not complain because it was clear the chef did not understand how to cook fish."

  • "Selected this restaurant for it's location--we were going to a show at the Marsh. Pleasantly surprised. Excellent cocktails and the oysters and mussels were excellent. Risotto and steak also well prepared. Service gets slower as tables fill up but all in all a good dining experience."

  • "We recently dined at Garçon prior to a show at the Marsh. The food was excellent except for the onion soup, which was mediocre. The service could also be improved. We arrived a few minutes before our 5:30 reservation, which was when the restaurant opened. We told the waiter we had a show at 7:00. Unfortunately our main dishes didn't come until about 6:40."

  • "others had recommended this restaurant. I think we may have had an off night. Still, with so many other very good restaurants, I don't think I will go back. My meal was bland. We had 3 different people serving us. Two were very good. The third was quite odd. She seated us and brought/refilled water. She never responded to a thank you or any other interaction - not just with us but with anyone. It was rather strange."

  • "The food is delicious here and the service is very good. There was a time several years ago when their service was slow but it is very good now (we have been several times in the past year). Garcon has a cozy atmosphere right on the main Valencia strip. I recommend the steak frites and the chocolate fondant for dessert."

  • "If you've ever wanted to know what food on Top Chef taste like, you should come here. The food is amazing and very creative. Wait staff is fantastic!"

  • "We had the escargot with gnocchi. Fantastic blend of complimentary flavors. The chefs special that evening was a halibut with an extraordinary red wine reduction. The potatoes were smoked and, although few, were a new flavor to me that worked very well with the fish. Many compliments and a pleasant surprise on a spontaneous decision driving down Valencia."

  • "Second time we've been there in a month. The pork tenderloin in a molasses(not too sweet) sauce was tender and yummy, served with an excellent risotto cake. My husband had a sweetbread appetizer that was outstanding. Friends had the halibut that was the special and it was also very good. Don't forget the chocolate fondant cake for dessert (sinful but worth it). Waiter was charming. Also fun to walk on Valencia street and see all the new happenings."

  • "French places like this are a dying breed in San Francisco. Garcon combines a neighborhood charm with an authentic French feeling with its staff. We consider this our "go to" restaurant for special occasions."

  • "We were going to the theater, and were in and out in less than an hour at our request. The coq au vin and the pork were wonderful, and as I looked around at dishes being brought out, I wanted to try everything. It's also right across the street from the Marsh Theater, so it's perfect a for pre-theater treat. I will be dining here regularly."

  • "Greeted by the friendly hosting staff and immediately sat down. Bartenders know the menu drinks well but ordering off the menu (manhattans, sazaracs and old fashions) can be challenging for them (Basil/Pepper vodka drink was outstanding, before they ran out of basil anyway). Ordered the Fromage, the Pate and the Crab Salad to start (salad was a special that night) and all of them were well received by the table. Service was present and friendly. When we got our entrees (Duck Confit, Bass, Steak and Pork Tenderloin) all of them turned out almost flavorless (despite a great presentation). Like to say it was an off night for them but one of us at the table had the exact same experience (great apps, not so great entrees) two weeks prior."

  • "First of all they reserved me the very table I requested via Open Table. The service could not have been better. And my date had the steak which she rated Perfect! Beautiful place as well."

  • "This restaurant had very good reviews, but we found the food lacking in flavor. Given it is a French bistro, we expected more richness. The octopus was bland, the escargot with gnocchi also bland (I had to add salt and I never salt anything), and our flank steak, while flavorful, tough. The special crab and avocado salad was fresh with a light dressing that did not overpower. The server made the evening worthwhile, as did the fine wine. The ambience is fun and definitely a local, neighborhood scene. We'll give it one more go."

  • "I absolutely loved my first visit to this restaurant. I wanted to find a French bistro in the city that we haven't tried before and Garçon was it! We had the bone marrow to start with delicious crispy crostini. My husband wanted to lick the bone if we weren't in public at a nice restaurant. We then split a ribeye steak which was cooked medium rare and to perfection. The waitstaff was very attentive and friendly as well. What a great find!"

  • "I really had trouble with the menue...everything called to me...and the evening specials were equally appealing. I have decided I have to go back to try more entres and appetizers. This time I had the duck confit (which was very good...I selected it because it came with "lintelles du Puy" instead of the twice cooked potatoes listed on the web site...they were perfectly prepared and really made the meal."

  • "this is our fourth time here. We stop in before or after a show at The Marsh. Each time the food has been excellent. Always choose the steamed muscles if they are on the menu and the French Onion Soup is divine! Last week I had the bone marrow appetzer and the ravioli with steamed clams in a delicious sauce. MY dinner companion had steak frites and pomme frites ad hey were delicious, Most of the waiters are french and speak englsh."

  • "We always have a great experience here. The food is classic French Bistro and prepared wonderfully. We've traveled to Paris a number of times and always compare this to the best of our Paris restaurant experience. The staff are friendly, knowledgable and attentive but not hovering."

  • "Had the prix fixe four course menu for V Day. There was a long delay in between the second and the third courses, which was the only downside to the evening. The manager did, however, come over and apologize for the delay. Otherwise, food was great and the manager (owner?) was very charming. I will come back for sure."

  • "New to the city and was looking for a place with good French food. Took my wife here for valentines day and it was wonderful. The entire meal was great. Specifically we both had the fillet which had a perfect crust on the outside."

  • "Hostess was delightful, offered us several tables & we chose our favorite. Waiter was friendly & fun & gave us good service until it got busy. Just when we were getting itchy, our food came. The french bread is lovely & salty. We tried the bone marrow which was quite greasy & the crostinis that it was to be served on were sliced paper thin, which would have been alright if they hadn't been filled with holes, so it all fell through onto our plates. We made a joke of it though because we loved our table. I had the pork tenderloin which was pretty good and my husband liked his (little too salty) Duck Confit. Our first visit was good, not great, but I would be willing to try once again."

  • "Food ok - ambience lovely - bartender great .... without attentive waiters, a restaurant in SF can't make it. One extremely bad waiter (thin man with skinny ponytail) and a 3 hour sit without attention to additional drink orders; dessert; coffee provided a very disappointmg evening. wouldn't return - better food and a caring staff can be found too many other places."

  • "We had a wondeful dinner here with friends...chef and proprieters joined us for a digestif after serving us, which gave us a warm and family feel about the restaurant. Oysters and bone marrow were out of this world. The lamb shank was splendid...even the fries from someone's burger disappeared in an instant. We'll be back (again)!"

  • "It was officially the last day of Dining About Town, so I was excited since their special menu looked appetizing. But they only participate during week night and not the weekend. I immediately liked the cozy romantic ambiance. We started off with a bottle or red wine, a nice French blend. The special sounded tempting: Rib Eye... but 29 ounces of meat to share, still sounded like way too much food. So he ordered the French onion soup to start, and I had the Butternut Squash with mushroom. I declined on trying his soup, but he thoroughly enjoyed it, as I did mine. As our main entree he had the pork and I ordered the steak frites. Both were delicious. Customer service was friendly; will definitely come back."

  • "Went here for dine about town week, my girlfriend ended up going with that option, the mussels, steak frites, and creme brulee. I opted for the chef's selection of cheeses and charcuterie, and i was not disappointed. Wild boar salami, duck salami was magnificent. The duck pate was also very tasty. Prosciutto di Serrano was a highlight of the dish. I cannot remember the names of the cheeses, the triple cream brie was superb, as was the sheep cheese. I put my fate in their hands and I was a very happy customer. Affligem blond is a delicious beer recommended to me by our server Stephane, and I enjoyed it so much I went out and bought a 6-pack the following day! I will be going back for certain"

  • "Ate for Dine About Town - the food and service was fantastic. We started with gnocchi between two. For mains I had the pork and grits, my husband had duck confit. Both were perfectly cooked and so succulent. The portion sizes are great (not horribly huge and leaving you feeling stuffed). There was no feeling of being rushed out the door, despite the fact there were many other diners-to-be waiting. Great service and will definitely recommend to others."
