Diner Reviews
  • "I took a group of 4 women, who'd never been before and everyone loved what they had...simple salads, fish and the special spring lamb dish with gnocchi. It is a casual, reasonable, always pleasing place to have a meal."

  • "This restaurant was ok, food was mostly good but nothing special and a bit dated. For the price there are better restaurants in the city that are much better."

  • "Our group did the tasting menu, which was fantastic. The chef was great about accommodating one of our guests' needs. Everything was delicious. We will definitely be back!"

  • "We enjoyed the $40. tasting menu. Everything was delicious and the chef adjusted the dishes so that a vegetarian, three flexitarians and one with cream allergies were all happy diners. Each dish was a delightful surprise. The service was also superb. However, we will not return until the noise level is fixed. We were a group of four and could not hear each other over the significant noise level in the restaurant. This was a Saturday night around 7 p.m. and by 8 p.m. we could not maintain a reasonable conversation. We told the restaurant management and they said they were working on the noise issue. In the meantime, go for a drink and nibbles and not for diner and conversation."

  • "Great food - gourmet, small plates type, will not be disappointed. Excellent mozzarella. But… very expensive wine list. Recommend buying your wine from a wine store claiming to be a separate independent business and pay a $15 cork fee - still worth it. One time we had quite a bad service at Garces, but other time the service was fine, but for sure could be improved. Had to ask for oil bowl and other misc items while should have been provided. Overall, nice experience for foodies. Recommend!"

  • "We always enjoy Chef Garces' Chef Selection approach. Great way for a group of 4 or more to sample most of the menu. Our Server, Elizabeth/Liz was outstanding; very knowlagable of menu and wine list, funny, professional and provided great service."

  • "First time at GTC for dinner. Had lunch here in the past and enjoyed the food. It was a nice night so we were able to eat outside. The table set up for the most part were 2 tops back to back and not side by side which allowed for more privacy. The limited wine selection was good. I had a very good Pinot noir and my friend Malbec. We split two appetizers, the endive salad with blue cheese and walnuts which was excellent as well as the baked mozzarella which was delicious but difficult to cut. Both order pasta entrees. I had the rigatoni with wild boar meatballs which I thoroughly enjoyed. My friend had the tetrazzini pasta dish which was tasty but very salted. The portion size for both pasta dishes was disappointing."

  • "Casual, fun menu, done with attention to detail. The tasting menu gives you a lot of the regular menu, with nice wine pairings. You won't be hungry. Wine bar has fun choices."

  • "expect nothing less than spectacular and to top it off, they have a unique olive oil/vinegar station and you get to taste as many samples as you want. def add to your list!"

  • "They have recently acquired a liquor license no problem. But the price of their wines and limited choices is crazy. Their corking fee is $15.00 even if you by a bottle in the now separate wine store. They are making a lovely amount of money for the service usually provided at a restaurant by making house choices so expensive that it's more economical for the customer to go to the on premises store to buy wine and then pay the corking fee. This restaurant has delusions of grander. By the way we dined with a French woman who knew the wines on the menu and found the prices they were asking outrageous. The menu choices were soso as was the food."

  • "We have been to this restaurant several times and we were hugely disappointed with this experience and it's such a shame as we met friends from out of town. The prices were higher and the food wasn't as good as it was just six months before."

  • "I enjoyed my recent trip to Garces Trading Company. the food was excellent, the wine list amazing and the servers knowledgable and warm. It is an inviting and relaxed space for top notch fookd and drink. it never felt pretentious or like it was trying too hard--we all enjoyed it."

  • "We went for my fiancees birthday and had the most incredible meal! I am not one to write reviews, but our meal here was so good that I had to write a review. The service was excellent and steered us in the right direction for everything that we ordered. The duck salad, mozzarella and steak frites were the best!"

  • "No doubt Garces Trading Company has earned outstanding reviews. Our group, for the most part, enjoyed our time at Garces. I think what makes it a bit of a miss is we had reservations for a specific time but had to wait for our table up to almost 30 minutes. To be expected? Not sure. When we were seated, we were very impressed with the menu, and being a very diverse group of 'eaters' (1 vegan, 2 no pork, 2 no seafood, 1 no nuts, etc.) the menu offered plenty of options. The music was too loud for our group to engage in any cross table conversation -- otherwise, we had to yell to communicate. We can be a loud group -- but the music made it a necessity."

  • "So their food is always good, but the service really varies every time we go. This time we brought our own wine and usually when we come here with a good bottle of wine they offer up good glasses. This time the waitress didn't know anything about wine, so she brought us basically water glasses to drink it out of. No big deal, just a little irritating. Then the first course took an hour to come (it was soup). Second course came a little faster, but all in all a disappointing night. Really too bad as the restaurant is nice and the food is quite good quality - they just need to work not he wait staff."

  • "This was great food in very comfortable surroundings and service. Able to relax with some great people, great food and great waitress. No overwhelmed by abundant service staff but efficient in serving and clearing. The kind of place you want to stay a while to enjoy the different offerings. Brilliant to have a State liquor section!!"

  • "Group of us went to brunch Saturday at Garces. Our waiter was spot on with his recommendations...we loved the duck fat fries, burger, Tarte Flambee (!!!!) and Maple Mascapone Polenta. Cocktails were also outstanding. Great brunch spot for Washington Square-ites!!"

  • "Excellent for before/after theater or concert visits; small menu yet with a variety of choices; pleasant, attentive service that never hurries those who like to linger."

  • "I've heard a lot of good things about this place especially about their desserts, so I'm glad to have the chance to come here before I leave Philly. We went light on the savory dishes: We got the Lyonnaise Duck Salad and the Funghi Flatbread. Both were delicious. I also ordered the French Limonade , which was surprisingly refreshing and smooth. For desserts my friend got the Polenta Budino and I got the Cadeau , as well as the assorted macaroon plate to share. I liked the Cadeau but not extremely impressed by the other 2 desserts. Overall it was a good experience but might be a tad overpriced. The cookie (on the house) at the end was a nice gesture though."

  • "We had a lovely dinner. Steak frite was fantastic. The restaurant space is a bit crowded to be super fancy but it was nice for a casual dinner. We had a fantastic waitress- the best we've had in many months. Wine was great too. Very enjoyable dinner"

  • "This was one of the restaurant on my WST list and my niece had been to other Garces restaurants and this was one she hadn't tried. Excellent suggestion. Food was delicious, Sangria was yummy as was the bread. Everything we selected was beautifully presented and all of the wait staff was attentive and friendly. Décor is simple and beautifully tasteful. Ended our meal with a fabulous dessert and delicious cappuccino which was made to our specifications. Would definitely return and definitely recommend."

  • "This is my third trip to Garces Trading company. The first two times (dinner then brunch) were last May when my boyfriend and I visited to see an Orchestra concert. We are from D.C. and come to Philly once or twice a year. The last time the tasting menu was AMAZING. This time we got it again and it was a little more low key. I missed the lentils. The steak with frites was cooked perfectly and the meat and cheese was awesome again but the rest of the menu sort of lacked the creativity that we experienced the last time. We also were bummed that the meat and cheese counter was turned into a bar. It just seemed less creative and more ordinary than the last time."

  • "I am a huge fan of Jose Garces! I've never been disappointed by any of his restaurants or the items I've ordered from any menu. I went to Garces Trading Co for lunch with my grandmother while she was visiting Philly. The restaurant is a great place for group meetings or lunches. The lunch menu offers an excellent twist on the traditional soup/salad/sandwich concept. I'd love to return to sample some of the many wines they offer for sale in the wine case. Highly recommend to anyone!"

  • "Nothing of great food, but nothing terrible either. Food looked better than it tasted for brunch. Fritatta was underseaoned and mild. Pancakes could of used more honey to sweeten the clotted creme. The maple pollenta with marscapone cheese was creamy but largely tasteless. The service was excellent and the waiter was courteous, patient and informative. Have had dinner here and will return again for evening, but probably not for mornings anymore,"

  • "We were visiting Philadelphia and made a reservation for brunch. Got to brunch over an hour early and they seated us right away no questions asked! The food was amazing. The pasta fagioli was very complex in flavor it was addictive! Our waiter Nate was very helpful and checked in on us regularly without being overbearing. Didn't realize that we ordered too much food until I had half an order of French toast remaining and my partner still had half a sandwich. Can't wait to visit Philly again and come back to Garces Trading Company. This place rocks!!"

  • "Food was great, service was great. We had a drink before the dinner and the bar was popping. They even have a wine store in the restuarant. Really cool. Th only thing bad about this place was that there wasn't much room. Or I should say that the tables were really close together."

  • "We had the Chocolate cake with the pistachio ice cream, the cake was a little dry. Overall we had a great time as usual. Steak and Frite for $29.00 / all you can eat is AWESOME !!!!!!"

  • "I had resevations pre-Shut Up and Dance. My friends had't dined at Garces Trading. I was sure they would love it as they all enjoy a great dining experience. True to form, food was amazing however the service was slow. Not sure it was the servers fault or something in the kitchen. Once we had our apps, it took almost 30 minutes before we had our meals. Then we had to rush out because it was just a few minutes before show start time. Fortunately the show was at the Forrest so we made it in time. Both the manager and server were extremely apologetic for the delay and gave us a dozen macaroons to go. We ate the macaroons during intermission and they were divine! In the end we all LOVED the food we ordered and would definitely return."

  • "The past few times I've been to Garces have been for restaurant week and I was not that impressed with their regular menu. I am, however, very pleased with the flatbreads made with duck fat dough. It's a subtle flavor but it's something that I find worth it. The spaniard is a great sandwich--the chicken was grilled perfectly and my dining partner was pleased with the carbonara. I'd recommend this place more during restaurant week."

  • "We love this restaurant. We often tend to order the same things over and over, but their menu isn't very extensive, so there aren't tons of choices. But we like it a lot and always go back and enjoy everything. ps. save some money to shop in their little store. I love to buy a little cheese and some special dipping sauces or oils for home."

  • "overall experience was nice. we were running about 2 minutes late, so I called to let host know that we were around the block. we got to restaurant and unfortunately had to wait about 15 minutes for our table (despite giving them a heads up). manager and host were apologetic about it, but it still unacceptable. our waitress was great. really attentive and great personality. she took the time to explain everything on the menu. foodwise, i'd recommend the tasting menu. all the courses were a nice surprise. cheese plate is a bit, well, skimpy. only 3 types of cheese?? i've had better. dessert was bland, and stale- not impressed. other than that, food was really good. i would probably go back."

  • "My wife and I ate at Garces Trading Company prior to a concert. We both bought the tasting menu (substituting a cheese course for the dessert) and had a great meal. All the courses were well done: standouts include the charcuterie plate, the steak frites, and the cheese course. Service was wonderful, as we as the casual vibe of the restaurant. We'll definitely go back. My only complaint involves timing. There was a long pause in the service after the first course, and the entrees came out backward. They brought out the steak frites and a red wine, and then a plate of scallops. Both were excellent, but the scallops should have come out before the steak frites (as we were finishing the white wine and starting on the red)."

  • "We stopped in for lunch on a Friday afternoon. We had a reservation but it wasn't needed on this day as we were seated right away. Our server was friendly, professional and gave us some great suggestions on some of his favorites. Overall we had a great time and look forward to going back for dinner some time."

  • "Had a party of 6 and opted for Chef Choice Menu. Food was excellent and served without complication. Wine flight was slightly lagging food presentation, but the wine choices were appropriate. Only real problem was the seats- the tables in the front are high and shorter members of our party had difficult time sitting in high stools for the entire meal. I loved the olive oil and balsamic vinegar tasting bar and bought a bottle of olive oil. Waitress was excellent and very attentive. Recommended this restaurant to other foodies at conference held near the restaurant."
