A word from Garage Restaurant and Cafe
What used to be a garage in the 20's is now a casual American restaurant famous for its live Jazz & late night meals. Out-of-towners & locals alike dive into the a la carte dinners & Prix Fixe Brunches while watching the show. In the summer, the outdoor cafe is an airy spot for micro-brewed beers, raw bar selections & a wide range of fresh seafood & grilled steaks. In the winter, tables around the stone fireplace warm crowds.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We have been visiting Garage every year for 17 years! The last 2 years were very disappointing with unacceptable noise levels causing us to eat in silence. The time limit for 'unlimited cocktails', was rigorously stated by our waiter & reinforced with the 2 diners next to us to the minute! He was slow which aggravated the situation. We decided to give them one last chance. However, this year, everything returned to normal. The Jazz and food were great; just the right volume, allowing one to converse without shouting. Service was excellent. Garage is a converted garage with fenders, chrome exhausts etc. on the walls. This décor really works and the ambiance is excellent Faith has been restored & we will return next year!"

  • "I don't understand why, after making a reservation on the 2nd, we would be seated upstairs? I was VERY disappointed as we couldn't see the band! The reason I came, was to see the band! I didn't eat as I was so angry, that it spoiled my entire night out! I guess it didn't help that my son was the band leader!"

  • "The most striking thing about our visit to Garage restaurant was how stingy the attitude was. There was an extra charge for just about anything we asked for, including a refill of coffee. We also had to send back our severely overcooked eggs after specifically ordering them with the yolks runny. One would think that after having to remake the egg dishes they might have offered something to make up for their poor service, but instead they said we would be charged for a second cup of coffee when we requested a refill. We won't return."

  • "Average food but extremely pricey. Good bands play live but definitely not the good vibes in this place."

  • "Booked a reservation for 6 at 7:30 on a Friday night to kick off the beginning of our girls trip to NY. Turned out to be a great choice. I'd read about this restaurant on Pinterest. We had to wait on all of our group to arrive to be seated so we sat at the bar first. Our bartender was friendly and fun and made a great dirty martini. Music was fun and exactly what we were wanted in a restaurant. Even though some of our group was late for our reservation, they still seated us as soon as the last one arrived. Service was attentive and my steak was tender and flavorful. Just what I needed after my two Martinis from the bar while I waited on 3 of the girls. I will put this restaurant on my go to list while visiting NYC."

  • "Very nice dinner with live jazz music. We didn't know there is music every night. Service: we got bread and butter just to the main course, even we all had appetizers."

  • "There are pro's and con's to having Sunday Brunch at the Garage. The pro's are: great jazz, a lively place for a group and excellent service by our waiter. Also, the prix fixe lunch was a good value--and the drinks were great. The con's are: Our 1pm reservation was not honored. We were seated at 1:30---having been aggravated by rushing to get there on time and seeing other groups be seated before us. The food was OK---I paid extra for lox on my plate--and you had to look closely for the salmon slivers. Everyone else in our group enjoyed their food. All in all--- just go for the NYC Sunday brunch experience--it's a good one."

  • "From the moment we were ignored by the Hostess for our on time arrival of our reservation, along with two other couples, I should have known this was not going to be a good experience and it was not a good one! Unfortunately as I had been and completely enjoyed the Garage near the High Line. My date was quite gracious as we waited to be acknowledged by the Hostess that didn't smile and spent her time with her face in the computer seemingly working on other reservations for later times?!?!? When she finally acknowledged us and I gave our name she informed us it would be just a few minutes for the table. Twenty minutes later, I asked for an update and she said it would only be another few minutes, which was 20! We went on Sunday March 16."

  • "Garage Restaurant is an unusual venue, having both live jazz AND good food! Service was pleasant and professional. We both enjoyed our appetizers and entrees. There was a nice, varied menu, a decent wine list. The best part of this place, however is the music. It's great that live jazz is offered early in the evening...as well as a later set. Seating is mostly good...view of musicians, close enough, yet all are able to converse (without being rude to the musicians). There are a few tables that are smack up against others, but for most of our early dinner, the table next to us was empty. This was overall an enjoyable experience."

  • "Very rude service. Jazz 'music' was so loud our table couldnt speak. We were shoved a menu by the hostess and told we all must purchase the brunch special - which was both rude and incorrect. The waitress incorrectly counted the money we left for the tip and then came over and confronted us in a very unusual manner declaring we "didn't even leave 18%" which is both inappropriate and flat out wrong. She also failed to apologise when noted of her basic mistake. As did the manager. In a word, shocking."

  • "This was my second time going to brunch at Garage. I love everything about this place. Live music, great food, unlimited mimosas and very reasonably priced. I'll definitely be back"

  • "We enjoyed both the food and the music during brunch. We added the unlimited drink option for $6 which was a good deal. They are very specific about it being exactly one hour. We both had a steak & egg combination and it was very good!"

  • "Went for dinner and to listen to some live music. Our waiter was a bit short on attention. Actually leaning over an empty table to take our order and serve our food. My paste was over-salted and had way too much garlic. The band did 3 songs and went on break again."

  • "With each and every trip I have made here over the past few months, I find the quality of the food and the service at brunch declining more and more. Poached eggs are hard, sun-dried tomatoes are rock hard, cheese is barely melted in omelets, drinks are more mixer than booze, and service downright stinks. The jazz is still great and the ambiance is kitschy, but they really need to step up their game. And upping the prices for Valentine's Day Weekend Brunch, cutting down the menu, and making it considerably more expensive was highly disappointing. I had my parents in from out of town and didn't want to make a scene since they didn't say anything to the server, but it will be a while before I go back."

  • "Little disappointed with table selection, first table was tiny. Server of the food didn't know table numbers ,constantly bringjng food that wasn't ours and we ordered calamari but it didn't come so all we had was salad and entree and dessert. Don't get me wrong though we always like the garage just that night you a few hick ups."

  • "went here for their jazz brunch and it was great although a bit loud. We ended up sitting up the stairs on their balcony and it wasn't as loud, but still a great spot. Their brunch costs 16.95$ and then you can add 6$ more to the order for unlimited mimosas/ bellinis/ bloody marys but beware this is only for one hour, but its worth it, as long as you keep telling your waiter, more drinks! I ended up getting the french toast and it was delicious, but the portion size was small and not worth 17$., you only get 3 pieces of bread. My friends got omelets and if I had to do it again thats what I would get. Overall was a fun place and great experience and Ill probably come back, just won't get the french toast."

  • "And loved the music. Great jazz trio playing, brighter/lighter room than Blue Note or most Jazz clubs. Food was fine, and the $16 brunch w cocktail was reasonably priced. But the food was certainly not the attraction. Vanilla-dipped french toast was soggy and may have had a vanilla bean pass by the kitchen, but vanilla hadn't found its way into the batter. Wife enjoyed her omelet, but found the mound of potatoes to be an unexpected oddity. Both had really good bloody marys."

  • "When we arrived, we sat atbar area which had a total of 8 people sitting at including ourselves and the services was very slow with 2 bartenders conversing and avoiding us. The waiter seated us and disappeared for severval minutes than came back to take our order and disappeared. I flagged him down after ten minutes to get our drinks, he was very slow. The resturant was very slow. Ten minutes after we started eating the waiter shows up smiling and says nothing and walks away. The food was not good, mine was loaded with a cream sauce and string beans were cold and not cooked and had not been properly cleaned up, still attached to the other string bean. They would have made a kids necklace. Over priced , lack of detail in service and food."

  • "It was noon in the West Village. Wanted lunch at noon. Picked this based mainly on proximity. The Steak Frites were as listed - a massive steak well cooked, and crunchy tasty fries. Great beers on tap too; I had ice tea. We were the only ones there at noon - can't comment on dinner nor noise factor when it gets busy. Cute room."

  • "If the hostess was a little more accommodating would have possibly rated the restaurant 4 stars overall, but first impressions last. Otherwise service was good for a busy Sunday brunch. Food is as you would expect for a brunch venue. Last time visited as a larger group and it worked better that way. Enjoyed the band, they also managed to entertain our toddler to keep her attention."

  • "Great atmoshere, friendly staff, had their special French Toast and it sounded better on the menu that what was served. But, overall terrific experience. Wonderful jazz band played albeit a bit too loud for any real conversation. Would defintely return again."

  • "The music is a bit loud so if you want to talk to each other, this is not the place. Food was pretty good with generous portions and wide variety. The all you can drink is ONLY good for one hour, and no sharing. A lot of rules about that."

  • "My boyfriend and I have come to the garage many times, and have never been disappointed. We love the atmosphere of the restaurant and the fact that they have live jazz. We've only come for brunch. We've had the surf and turf bendecit, lobster benedict, veggie omelet, and steak and eggs- over the various times we've visited. Most times our service was great. The last time our server was over peppy and loud for the morning. She had a very fake server voice and repeated the exact same phrases to every table. She was attentive, though. We'll definitely be returning many times in the future."

  • "I feel the food might be at its best on regular days as compared with the Christmas brunch fare I had; service was excellent, the 'champagne' was very nice and I asked for the name: It was an American wine called Wyecliff (sp?). The atmosphere is warm and cozy and fun since it's a restaurant with a garage in its past and not afraid to show it. We ate upstairs overlooking the bar and larger dining area below. The noise level in the upstairs area was the way it should be---quiet enough for easy conversation. I would like to come back when they are offering their usual menu seclections."

  • "This has been one of our favorite neighborhood places to enjoy good food and live music.. However, the price of food and especially drinks have elevated to the point beyond reasonable - more than the midtown high-end hotel bars. Both up-martinis and on the rocks seem to be short pours. Between the drink prices and the food prices, it is no longer a casual neighborhood hangout.. in addition, the drums were overly-miced so it drowned out the rest of the band and dinner conversation."
