Diner Reviews
  • "Salmon Rockefeller was amazing a year ago. This time it was terrible. Amateur. Bush league. Everything else was perfect. Dynamite scallops were amazing."

  • "Julie did a very fine job: explained buffet well, anticipated our needs, was well dressed, had a sense of humor and like-ability. The food was good too!"

  • "This was our third or fourth Brunch experience with the Gandy Dancer, and once again, it was truly delightful. The service, the food, and the ambiance are outstanding. We were celebrating our 41 wedding anniversary, and it was just wonderful. I highly recommend the Gandy Dancer experience to anyone."

  • "We had a great dinner - the diamite scallops are incredible and the silver oak cab is always a winner!! The server Bill did a great job and it was nice not feeling rushed!!"

  • "A very nice place with excellent food and impeccable service. I mean...to give you an example of the service level - the napkins on the table are white. Because I was wearing black pants, the server switched mine to a black napkin so it wouldn't stand out on my pants."

  • "Gandy Dancer holds the hearts of various families & companions, great for entertaining friends and enjoying romantic dinners as well as entertaining happy hours. My hope is that my last two experiences will never happen again. As patron's we see the importance of reservations, it would be nice if management would give as much significance of advanced booking and leave out excuses for over booking to extremes. Thank you for listening."

  • "We celebrated a birthday and anniversary with family. Gandy's staff was outstanding, courteous, celebratory and efficient. Warm dinner rolls wrapped in white linen and special birthday menus provided by the staff started our celebrations. The historic stone decor and large windows provided a scenic view. Tender salmon served with mango/lime and other scrumptious fish with sweet spicy bronze colored sauces were delicious. The rice was arranged as a pyramid. For dessert, a tangy key lime pie with candle...what fun! Would definitely recommend!!"

  • "I recently took my niece to the Gandy Dancer to celebrate the "near completion" of her fist year at UM. We had an excellent meal and the restaurant provided a gluten-free menu for us. It has always been one of my favorite places and it did not disappoint in any way! It is especially fun to sit by the window and watch the train go by!"

  • "The meal started with a basket of piping hot, fresh from the oven rolls slathered with garlic butter and herbs which were out of this world good. These were followed by shrimp cocktail, wedge salads, and lobster bisque, all of which were good, though not notable. Finally, we had surf and turf for our main courses. The lobster tail was perfectly cooked, sweet and tender. The filet was perfectly cooked and very tender but covered with so much pepper, it was hard to eat. I'd still recommend this place, but if you order a steak and aren't a big pepper fan, request that they leave the pepper off so you can season it yourself."

  • "From the moment we walked in I was in love. The decor was beautiful, the servers were great, the atmosphere was A-1, the classic jazz playing in the background and fireplace made the mood uber romantic. I will be back for sure."

  • "We no longer live in the area but returned to the Gandy Dancer hoping for an excellent dinner. We were not disappointed! Great food and atmosphere. The service was exceptional. We brought new-to-the-area people with us and I suspect they will become regulars!"

  • "The most attractive restaurant in Ann Arbor. Excellent food, a delightful atmosphere for memorable meals with old friends, potential business partners, or guests coming to Ann Arbor for the first time."

  • "I thought that the Sunday brunch menu was great. There was a variety of options, and it was all delicious. The only critique my family and I had was that the food could have been hotter. We felt that the carved prime rib and ham definitely could have (and should have) been warmer, as well as a few of the items on the breakfast line. But, overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience, the food, and the atmosphere, and I'm hoping to come back to Gandy Dancer again soon!"

  • "We have eaten at the Gandy Dancer many times. The food is excellent. The service is outstanding. The old train station atmosphere takes you back to an era when America was modernizing."

  • "The ambiance was excellent, had a window seat but a rather bleak view of the train tracks. The menu was awesome looking however the food was rather uninspired. The server was fine but he was forced to give a long winded speech on the multiple locations and on joining their dining club. This took over 5 minutes and the server was astute enough to know we were getting annoyed. He did give us a good wine selection but there was obviously a contest for who could sell the most of the appetizer of the day. We tried it but we were sorely disappointed. All the seafood was fresh and sounded appealing but flavors were boring and the food just not quite hot (not even the coffee). I don't plan to ever go back nor would I recommend this to anyone."

  • "Our Saturday dinner at Gandy Dancer was everything I hoped for - window seating, good food, good service, even two trains that went by. It all had that 'extra special' feel. A pet peeve of mine lately has been restaurant food that comes to the table too cool...this meal was piping hot! The only significant improvement I would make would be to the view! It's difficult I realize, but if the brick walk was repaired and some landscaping done it would increase the charm. Thanks for an experience that didn't disappoint!"

  • "Yes it is expensive and the seafood is fairly good. We only went here since we had a 25 dollarr credit for a birthday meal. I will skip the dinner and try for the Sunday brunch next year."

  • "Crisp white linen on a table next to the train tracks. Being delighted by not one but two trains an arms-length away. It was my spouse's birthday and we shared appetizers and entrees. The calamari starter was soft and spicy and the crab cake flaky and juicy. Wine was a pinot gritio, Little Black Dress ('It goes with everything', Josh, our server said.) from their pretty extensive wine list. Main courses was a blackened Mahi-Mahi and a new york strip steak, Both cooked to perfection. Great ambience, great service by Josh and his buddy who winged for each other as they craftfully served the four tables in our area. We had a great time at the Gandy. You will too."

  • "Really enjoyed our time here. The food was excellent, the dessert to die for. Would definitely go back again. If you"

  • "Loved the brunch offerings...from your typical breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage links, various breads, omelets made to order, must-have waffles, four types of salmon, to fresh slices of ham and prime rib. We loved everything we ate, but the desserts were less than extraordinary in flavor, taste and texture, not their forte. The only one that was worth noting is the flavor of the key lime dessert. We all agreed that the cinnamon buns are great...but not when cold...there should be a way to heat them up...more enjoyable that way. Service - waitress was great but suggestion to be a little more on top of filling drink glasses, coffee, hot water for tea and asking if we'd like another cocktail. She was super nice though and very accommodating!"

  • "We have been to Gandy Dancer many times in the past as we live in the area. We took family from Norway to experience Gandy Dancer on a Sunday evening, and they absolutely loved the place and the food. They are seasoned travelers and have experienced many great restaurants, but stated this was among the best because of the overall combination of the great food, the great service, the ambiance, and the occasional train passing by."

  • "First time dining at The Gandy Dancer. The building is beautiful, the service was very good. The food was just OK. I expected better (more unique, bold) flavors based on price and reputation. Food was nicely presented and there are a lot of choices. I would go back for the atmosphere and service but with lower expectations of the food. This is a place that would impress your parents or grandparents, not your foodie-friends."

  • "An Ann Arbor classic, the Gandy Dancer has a unique way of making you feel special no matter what the occasion. Perhaps its the impeccable service, or the fabulous menu, but you won't go wrong celebrating your event in this comfortable environment."

  • "We went for the Sunset Dining special (3:30-5:30PM) for a menu which had salad or soup, entree, and dessert for $20 and everything was delicious. Would recommend this restaurant to all my friends who don't like eating late."

  • "I have lived in ann arbor for over 20 years and I never took the opportunity to get to gandy. Why...I really don't know. I am sorry I overlooked you for many years. You are a gem. The food was wonderful and the dining experience was wonderful. I will absolutely be back. thanks."

  • "Our second time having brunch for a special occasion. Our daughter at UM LOVES the Gandy Dancer and the Brunch has become a family favorite. A lot to choose from and the service is outstanding. When the restaurant called to confirm our reservation the day before they gladly accommodated another person at our table."

  • "This was our first time and I must say we were impressed. It was difficult making a dinner selection as the menu had many great choices. We will most definitely go back."

  • "Food was overcooked, cold, and broccoli was substituted for asparagus for some reason. I had to send back my halibut because it was so overdone. The 2nd plate was much better. They reheated a couple of my fellow-diners' dinners, and they brought asparagus when the error was brought to the server's attention. The worst was the bill, though. They comped the meals for me and another person who got the overdone halibut, but they added the price once and then subtracted it twice from the bill, then they added and subtracted the price of the meals they reheated. We could not decipher the bill, so we just ended up splitting it 7 ways. What a fiasco! We've eaten here many times through the years, and have never had an experience like this!"

  • "Gandy Dancer has been our go to celebration restaurant since about 1968! Instead of my older sister's graduation from U of M, this time we're celebrating our son's Almost 50 years! How did that happen? Still the most wonderful restaurant, great staff. A special headline on our son's menu was icing on the cake!"
