Diner Reviews
  • "Somewhat disappointing. Prime rib was underdone and tough to cut. Vegetable never arrived. Fish stew was heavily salted and included crab legs which are inappropriate for that dish. Salads were great. Service was very slow and it appeared that there was some sort of problem in the kitchen. At one point, some of the wait staff were huddled together on the floor of the restaurant in a heated discussion. Overall experience not as good as a visit in 2013."

  • "The food was awesome. The food was so fresh and the service was really good. The atmosphere puts the icing on the cake."

  • "We came to the Gandy Dancer for my husband's 50th birthday. Everyone enjoyed a different seafood dish all exquisitely prepared. I have a lot of food allergies and managed to find something that worked for me because their menu allows the fish to be prepared several ways. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The service was great. Oh and the bread is delicious!"

  • "The food was divine. Our meal began with a lovely bruschetta served over a balsamic vinegar reduction. I then dug into a fantastic boulliabaise and my wife enjoyed an assortment of appetizer plates. My dish tasted better the longer that I took to open the crab legs and other assorted seafood goodies in my bowl. The tastes absorbed into the broth. My wfe loved her Brie appetizer along with her scallops. After washing our hands in lemon juice, our waiter brought out the dessert menu. The chocolate desserts were among the best that either of us have enjoyed when dining out. The specialty coffees were wonderful as well. Our waiter was friendly, knowledgable about the dishes, and ever present without being obtrusive. Superb meal!!"

  • "Delicious food at Sunday Brunch gives you an idea of how excellent their kitchen staff is, and the service at your table is very good as well. The atmosphere is interesting (old train station, live jazz musicians) and the views also. Ann Arbor is lucky to have unique place that serves yummy food with style!"

  • "I was unfortunately very dissapointed in both the quality of the food and service the evening of July 4th for a 19th birthday celebration for my son. , the service was something I could understand as our waitress was clearly young and inexperienced. Most dissapointing however was the food, my swordfish special was a think cut of fish that was overcooked and dry, the wild mushroom rice was so overcooked it literally was a glob of gluten that resembled mashed potatoes. My son's fish was extremely oily like it was dropped the oil at a low temperature. A restaurant with this reputation, paying $300 for a dinner for 5, everything from service to each entree' should be spot on. I don't think we will be back."

  • "When I was 7 years old my father, a Professor at the University of Michigan, and I took the train from this station to New York City. It was a great adventure. I've been eating at this restaurant ever since it was converted from a train station to a Restaurant. I eat there to watch the trains and to remember a bygone era. The venue is excellent. The wine list is average, but the food has never been very good. When most Ann Arborites thought fine dining was "Red Lobster", The Gandy Dancer may have been a welcome escape from chain restaurants. However, it is now is relatively awful and expensive. In many respects, it represents an insult to food and to the significant gains made by Americans in the culinary arts. Eat elsewhere."

  • "When we receive the menus at the top it was printed in happy 19th anniversary! What a surprise it really made the occasion very special. We really took our time and we ate a very wonderful meal on everything tasted excellent! we had a soft crab shell appetizer which was great! M y husband had steak and it was done to perfection. My soup was the best I've ever tasted. The desert was heavenly was just enough to share with my husband and really topped off the meal! The service was great! He was very attentive to us and yet not overbearing. We certainly will go back there!"

  • "Although the food tasted great, the chef uses way too much oil. I had two dishes (Hawaiian poke appetizer and the pasta pagliara) and both were literally swim mining on oil. Also the seafood and my wife's and my dishes were overlooked. Service was great, but I gave it 4/5 stars because there was a mix up and no one came to take our order for over 20 minutes. My wide and I almost got up and left."

  • "We were a little disappointed in the options for vegetarians. There was only one selection on the menu to choose from which ended up being just "ok". Other than that, the ambiance and the waitress were very nice."

  • "We went for my Mom's 85th Birthday, everything was excellent. Table was ready when we arrived, everyone had a different dinner order and there was no complaints about any of the food. The Callamari and Oysters were the best I have had in quite a wile. I have been to the restaurant a few times on business and was impressed enough to have mom's b-day party dinner there. Great job everyone."

  • "We have been going here for years, always great and will continue to enjoy coming back. Not many places better for seafood!"

  • "Although the food was good, especially the watermelon salad, I was very disappointed in the service. Our waiter was pleasant enough, but the two waitresses cleaning glasses at the table next to us were VERY rude. They not only were having a loud conversation, but a loud conversation about "how they couldn't wait for restaurant week to be over" and "how they only made $100 dollars last night". I'm sorry if the wait staff has trouble with poor tippers during restaurant week, but do NOT complain about it next to other diners trying to enjoy their meal. I found it very unprofessional and rude. I've been to the Gandy Dancer several times and have always been pleased with my service. Restaurant week should be a positive experience."

  • "Been going to Gandy Dancer for over 20 years. Live in Florida now and took this rare opportunity to meet friends there. Not as good as it once was. Probably not go again."

  • "We ordered from their Restaurant Week selections. Overall delicious, though my salad was a tad over dressed and the food inconsistently seasoned. It was surprisingly quiet for Restaurant Week when most restaurants are obnoxiously loud. I imagine it must be a very nice atmosphere on a regular basis. And, of course, when the trains go by everyone is in a good mood."

  • "We had lunch with my wife's sister and brother-in-law and really had a good time. Ethan's service was very attentive and timely. Our meals were all well prepared, but my linguini was a bit cold like it had been sitting waiting to be served. Thanks for a great time with our sister and husband."

  • "My wife and I went to the Gandy Dancer in Ann Arbor for the first time in about 25 years. The restaurant has really nice ambiance as a restored and remodeled train station and appeared much the way we remembered it. We even got to see a train come through at which point one of the wait staff will ring a bell. We were there for restaurant week and had selections off of the fixed menu. My wife and I both had the seafood chowder which was way too salty. My shrimp scampi style was pretty good but my wife's salmon was prepared in a way that it was also too salty. I wouldn't want to pay regular prices for the meals we received."

  • "We made this reservation for my Mother's birthday and when we arrived we were told we could only get the all you can eat brunch. We should have been told we could not order from the lunch menu at the time we made the reservation. We were very disappointed and we left shortly after being seated. I can't really give you an honest assessment because we didn't eat. We probably won't go back"

  • "The Gandy Dancer has great ambiance as well as service and the fact that they offer valet parking really kicks the experience up a notch. However, the food seemed over-priced for both the portion size AND taste. My boyfriend ordered a salad which was mediocre, his main dish was very small and once again, nothing special taste or presentation-wise. I ordered Charley's chowder as a starter, which was probably my favorite thing from the whole dinner and salmon for my main course, which didn't leave me wanting more. I was honestly disappointed."

  • "It was disappointing.I have been here many times before and have always enjoyed it.BUT this time,I would NEVER have thought they would serve a Bottle of Wine with a Screw Off Cap,how embarrassing for our Guest OMG,plus NO Chilled Wine decanter or Bucket.Waiter never came back to pour more wine, guess that's what you get with a Screw Off Cap. Fish was Copper Salmon way and I mean WAY over cooked.A very very small Filet for the price, Rest of our Meals were OK,nothing outstanding.Sorry We won't be back. Kay Rhudy OH and to think they want Us to Pay to belong to their Club Ha ha Not a chance good grief, why would I want to PAY on top of Paying for a Meal. This is a joke or a scam>!!!!!! It was also very noisy by the Windows."

  • "We chose GD for the history and experience - not so much for the food but we were expecting something nicer than what we got. The drink specials featured in a photo display show a full glass of a fruity beverage. We ordered two and they were 1/4 full glass with some sad looking fruit sunk at the bottom. It was comical. Our dinners were not any better than what you'd get at Applebee's. Tough cauliflower, greasy rice, overlooked fish...however, the gazpacho and warm bread basket were phenomenal. We'd probably go back for a Sunday brunch but certainly not for dinner. There are far too many culinary gems in AA to waste a meal eating at GD. I wanted to love it but sadly, it fell quite short of our expectations."

  • "We had a table of 10 for a 60th birthday party gathering. The service for our large group was excellent and the food was wonderful too. I was quite surprised to find that the special sauce on my fish entree cost an additional $7.00 which wasn't mentioned. A heads up would have been appreciated."

  • "The food was excellent, our waiter, Bob, was funny and charasmatic and very knowledgeable about the meals and wine and the atmosphere melted my heart. If you want a romantic, quiet, special place. . . . I would reccomend them for everyone!"

  • "The Gandy Dancer is consistently wonderful in every way: service, food, ambiance, and the ability to have a conversation without screaming. My husband and I ordered different things, and we both cleaned our plates. Because it was our anniversary, we were treated to dessert. This is always our special occasion choice for dinner, and we're never disappointed."

  • "The architecture is stunning. But a seafood place....not so much. The Brie and chutney were good. My crab cakes were so fishy that I ate only one bite. Hats off to the manager and chef for trying to make it right. While I loved the building, our view in the sunroom was that of a railroad track with overgrown weeds located next to a bridge. It felt more like hoboville. If you are a foodie and enjoy exceptional flavors and stunning presentation, this is not the restaurant for you. I will admit that I travel quite a bit and love to try local restaurants with a flare so my experiences may reach beyond others who will enjoy this restaurant."

  • "We love Gandy Dancer. It has maintained its standards through the 35 years that I have frequented it. I find management and chefs to be flexible, helpful and creative. The servers are responsive, always taking a moment to greet and chat with "regulars." The building itself is fabulous and of course the visits from Amtrak are fun."

  • "The food was very good. Standard meat and fish fare but nicely done. The setting is special. Love the old building and the restoration. Haven't tried the bar but it seems to have a lot of potential as a vibrant bar scene. We usually patronize this restaurant for special occasions but wondered why we don't go more often. An Ann Arbor gem."

  • "My wife and I celebrated her birthday and Father's Day at the Gandy Dancer. The brunch was excellent, the food and varity was great. The service as always was first rate. Would highly recommend not only for the Sunday brunch but for regular dinner. The seafood is top notch. For dinner be sure to order the lava cake."

  • "The setting of an historic railroad station with the ambiance of the active train tracks outside is impressive even before the food arrives! Our group enjoyed a variety of menu items and everyone waddled away satisfied! The beef items were very good but the seafood dishes took the top honors for flavor, presentation and portion. Appetizers were tasty and the "hot" items were flavorful without being too spicy for those with softer palettes. It's a whistlestip well worth making!"

  • "The food and experience was very pleasant once I got an in-the-know server. When we arrived the atrium was almost empty, but we 2 were sat at a table next to 8 boisterous celebrators, which was okay because there were plenty of empty tables. However, the restaurant's host told us he couldn't move us as we were in a certain server's area. This was unacceptable and it took me too much effort to get moved 2 tables down from where we were. Of course when new guests arrived they were seated in that area where we were moved to. This was way too out of character for a restaurant of such fame. Shameful. Once relocated and assigned an excellent server, our experience was very good. But overall left a bad taste in my mouth."

  • "I brought my family from out of town and had a terrific time! Even though I made a reservation and my table was not available for 20 minutes after the scheduled time, our server made up for it. Sabrina was fantastic, warm, engaging and dynamic. The food was phenomenal. The brunch spread offered a lot of tantalizing options and the quality was fantastic. We even had a one year old with us and the restaurant was fantastic with him. I look forward to brunch there again in the near future."

  • "We came for the Sunday Brunch with our 10-year-old very picky eater. She got so excited when we told her we were planning to come here. She managed to find tons of delicious food that she actually loved (and it wasn't just pastries)! There is so much variety and it is all well-presented. What's not to love?"

  • "Had not done the brunch in years. They still do a great job! The buffet was well stocked and kept fresh looking. Our server was attentive and helpful. The ambiance of the old train station is always great! It was our wedding anniversary and we requested the same table I proposed to my wife at 23 years earlier. We did not get that table but were close and they did get us "trackside" as requested. Also, even though I had mentioned it was our anniversary they made no mention of it / did not acknowledge it. Not that they had to acknowledge it, but it was a missed opportunity to go "above and beyond", since I think they strive to be a cut above. No matter, it was a great brunch!"
