  • "Gandy Dancer is a great location for a special occasion. The service was great and the old train station it's located in is unlike anything else in Ann Arbor. Overall, the food was good but needed more seasoning in my opinion. Definitely recommend if you want to impress someone."

  • "We had a large group (14 people) which included a child under the age of 2. We were celebrating our parent's 60th wedding anniversary. The food was fantastic, the service was great. They were sold out of several wines that we selected but provided us with their recommendation (more expensive) at the originally selected wine price. The staff even helped us with taking a formal picture of the family. We were a bit concerned about taking a small child, but they have a children's menu and were very kid friendly."

  • "The Gandy Dancer allows you to imagine being on the railroad line enjoying fine dining. Great adventure for a group on a special occasion. Join the club for savings - I plan on using the $25 birthday voucher to take my special love for his birthday .... he loves mussels and that is one of the items on the brunch menu. That will be my next adventure on the railroad line.... Birthday breakfast brunch in September..."

  • "First: arrive early and spend 30 minutes enjoying a nice drink in the bar. Second: nice table outside near the tracks while a Chicago to Detroit train goes by.Everyone claps for some reason.... Third: great dinner; fresh fish for her and special pasta offering for me. Fourth: the only issue... a less than exciting cherry crisp with tasteless cherries and almost no crisp. 3 out of 4...."

  • "We felt rushed. The entrees came before salads were finished. My fish was only lukewarm. The wait staff was excellent."

  • "A 10. a perennial favorite. Go there every time I go to Ann Arbor. Exceptional everything. Love the ambiance too"

  • "Both the Cedar Plank and Copper River Salmon dishes were tasteless. How do you ruin salmon? There are much better dining options in Ann Arbor. It is a shame because the historic venue of the Gandy Dancer is amazing."

  • "Loved this rest. I will be back. Crab cakes were average as well as the baked brie for an appetizer that was average. Also the Marthas Vineyard salad, the salad seemed old wasn't fresh. Scallop main dish wasn't bad but I wouldn't order it again. The standouts were the crème brulee and the prime rib. Those I would come back for, the ambience and the great service!!!"

  • "We were recommended to the Gandy Dancer to celebrate my parents 50th. Located in the old train depot, it could not have been a more perfect spot. Food was incredible, maybe the best Prime Rib I have ever had. Try the dynamite scallop app as well, fantastic."

  • "Always like this place although last few times, seems food quality going down somewhat. Fish was not that fresh and food overall came not very hot. Service was not up to par although waiter seemed very busy and seemed to try his best."

  • "I took a friend here for a birthday lunch. The food was wonderful, I was very disappointed in the service. Water glasses were on our table but I had to request water. Had to request refills on our ice tea. We couldn't seem to get drinks and she kept trying to take away our appetizer, and then meal before we were finished. I eat here frequently and was surprised with the poor service it is normally very good."

  • "This was our fifth visit to Gandy Dancer and we are still quite impressed. My steak cut calamari was excellent as was my halibut with an Asian flair. It seems that some restaurants today have stopped providing a bread basket. I appreciated this nice touch at Gandy Dancer--there were three or four warm breads to choose from. Our server, Bob, was very nice and solicitous. My one complaint is that when I asked for a SLIGHT variation on one of the cocktails listed, Bob said unequivocally that nothing could be substituted. Really?? When we are paying $200 for two for dinner?"

  • "Had not been here for many years as it is a long distance for us. When an opportunity came up couldn't wait to see if it remained as good. Well we found it every bit as good both food and service. A thoroughly wonderful evening!"

  • "My mom, sister and I went there for a Birthday celebration. The food and wine where excellent, as well as our wait staff. Our only complaint was that they set us next to a wedding party's "kids table". The restaurant was not very busy when they sat us there, so we are not sure why the put us there of all places. Overall it was a great dining experience."

  • "Somewhat disappointing. Prime rib was underdone and tough to cut. Vegetable never arrived. Fish stew was heavily salted and included crab legs which are inappropriate for that dish. Salads were great. Service was very slow and it appeared that there was some sort of problem in the kitchen. At one point, some of the wait staff were huddled together on the floor of the restaurant in a heated discussion. Overall experience not as good as a visit in 2013."

  • "The food was divine. Our meal began with a lovely bruschetta served over a balsamic vinegar reduction. I then dug into a fantastic boulliabaise and my wife enjoyed an assortment of appetizer plates. My dish tasted better the longer that I took to open the crab legs and other assorted seafood goodies in my bowl. The tastes absorbed into the broth. My wfe loved her Brie appetizer along with her scallops. After washing our hands in lemon juice, our waiter brought out the dessert menu. The chocolate desserts were among the best that either of us have enjoyed when dining out. The specialty coffees were wonderful as well. Our waiter was friendly, knowledgable about the dishes, and ever present without being obtrusive. Superb meal!!"

  • "We came to the Gandy Dancer for my husband's 50th birthday. Everyone enjoyed a different seafood dish all exquisitely prepared. I have a lot of food allergies and managed to find something that worked for me because their menu allows the fish to be prepared several ways. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The service was great. Oh and the bread is delicious!"

  • "Delicious food at Sunday Brunch gives you an idea of how excellent their kitchen staff is, and the service at your table is very good as well. The atmosphere is interesting (old train station, live jazz musicians) and the views also. Ann Arbor is lucky to have unique place that serves yummy food with style!"

  • "I was unfortunately very dissapointed in both the quality of the food and service the evening of July 4th for a 19th birthday celebration for my son. , the service was something I could understand as our waitress was clearly young and inexperienced. Most dissapointing however was the food, my swordfish special was a think cut of fish that was overcooked and dry, the wild mushroom rice was so overcooked it literally was a glob of gluten that resembled mashed potatoes. My son's fish was extremely oily like it was dropped the oil at a low temperature. A restaurant with this reputation, paying $300 for a dinner for 5, everything from service to each entree' should be spot on. I don't think we will be back."

  • "When we receive the menus at the top it was printed in happy 19th anniversary! What a surprise it really made the occasion very special. We really took our time and we ate a very wonderful meal on everything tasted excellent! we had a soft crab shell appetizer which was great! M y husband had steak and it was done to perfection. My soup was the best I've ever tasted. The desert was heavenly was just enough to share with my husband and really topped off the meal! The service was great! He was very attentive to us and yet not overbearing. We certainly will go back there!"

  • "When I was 7 years old my father, a Professor at the University of Michigan, and I took the train from this station to New York City. It was a great adventure. I've been eating at this restaurant ever since it was converted from a train station to a Restaurant. I eat there to watch the trains and to remember a bygone era. The venue is excellent. The wine list is average, but the food has never been very good. When most Ann Arborites thought fine dining was "Red Lobster", The Gandy Dancer may have been a welcome escape from chain restaurants. However, it is now is relatively awful and expensive. In many respects, it represents an insult to food and to the significant gains made by Americans in the culinary arts. Eat elsewhere."

  • "Although the food tasted great, the chef uses way too much oil. I had two dishes (Hawaiian poke appetizer and the pasta pagliara) and both were literally swim mining on oil. Also the seafood and my wife's and my dishes were overlooked. Service was great, but I gave it 4/5 stars because there was a mix up and no one came to take our order for over 20 minutes. My wide and I almost got up and left."

  • "We were a little disappointed in the options for vegetarians. There was only one selection on the menu to choose from which ended up being just "ok". Other than that, the ambiance and the waitress were very nice."

  • "We went for my Mom's 85th Birthday, everything was excellent. Table was ready when we arrived, everyone had a different dinner order and there was no complaints about any of the food. The Callamari and Oysters were the best I have had in quite a wile. I have been to the restaurant a few times on business and was impressed enough to have mom's b-day party dinner there. Great job everyone."

  • "Although the food was good, especially the watermelon salad, I was very disappointed in the service. Our waiter was pleasant enough, but the two waitresses cleaning glasses at the table next to us were VERY rude. They not only were having a loud conversation, but a loud conversation about "how they couldn't wait for restaurant week to be over" and "how they only made $100 dollars last night". I'm sorry if the wait staff has trouble with poor tippers during restaurant week, but do NOT complain about it next to other diners trying to enjoy their meal. I found it very unprofessional and rude. I've been to the Gandy Dancer several times and have always been pleased with my service. Restaurant week should be a positive experience."

  • "We ordered from their Restaurant Week selections. Overall delicious, though my salad was a tad over dressed and the food inconsistently seasoned. It was surprisingly quiet for Restaurant Week when most restaurants are obnoxiously loud. I imagine it must be a very nice atmosphere on a regular basis. And, of course, when the trains go by everyone is in a good mood."

  • "We had lunch with my wife's sister and brother-in-law and really had a good time. Ethan's service was very attentive and timely. Our meals were all well prepared, but my linguini was a bit cold like it had been sitting waiting to be served. Thanks for a great time with our sister and husband."

  • "The Gandy Dancer has great ambiance as well as service and the fact that they offer valet parking really kicks the experience up a notch. However, the food seemed over-priced for both the portion size AND taste. My boyfriend ordered a salad which was mediocre, his main dish was very small and once again, nothing special taste or presentation-wise. I ordered Charley's chowder as a starter, which was probably my favorite thing from the whole dinner and salmon for my main course, which didn't leave me wanting more. I was honestly disappointed."

  • "My wife and I went to the Gandy Dancer in Ann Arbor for the first time in about 25 years. The restaurant has really nice ambiance as a restored and remodeled train station and appeared much the way we remembered it. We even got to see a train come through at which point one of the wait staff will ring a bell. We were there for restaurant week and had selections off of the fixed menu. My wife and I both had the seafood chowder which was way too salty. My shrimp scampi style was pretty good but my wife's salmon was prepared in a way that it was also too salty. I wouldn't want to pay regular prices for the meals we received."

  • "We made this reservation for my Mother's birthday and when we arrived we were told we could only get the all you can eat brunch. We should have been told we could not order from the lunch menu at the time we made the reservation. We were very disappointed and we left shortly after being seated. I can't really give you an honest assessment because we didn't eat. We probably won't go back"

  • "We chose GD for the history and experience - not so much for the food but we were expecting something nicer than what we got. The drink specials featured in a photo display show a full glass of a fruity beverage. We ordered two and they were 1/4 full glass with some sad looking fruit sunk at the bottom. It was comical. Our dinners were not any better than what you'd get at Applebee's. Tough cauliflower, greasy rice, overlooked fish...however, the gazpacho and warm bread basket were phenomenal. We'd probably go back for a Sunday brunch but certainly not for dinner. There are far too many culinary gems in AA to waste a meal eating at GD. I wanted to love it but sadly, it fell quite short of our expectations."

  • "It was disappointing.I have been here many times before and have always enjoyed it.BUT this time,I would NEVER have thought they would serve a Bottle of Wine with a Screw Off Cap,how embarrassing for our Guest OMG,plus NO Chilled Wine decanter or Bucket.Waiter never came back to pour more wine, guess that's what you get with a Screw Off Cap. Fish was Copper Salmon way and I mean WAY over cooked.A very very small Filet for the price, Rest of our Meals were OK,nothing outstanding.Sorry We won't be back. Kay Rhudy OH and to think they want Us to Pay to belong to their Club Ha ha Not a chance good grief, why would I want to PAY on top of Paying for a Meal. This is a joke or a scam>!!!!!! It was also very noisy by the Windows."

  • "We had a table of 10 for a 60th birthday party gathering. The service for our large group was excellent and the food was wonderful too. I was quite surprised to find that the special sauce on my fish entree cost an additional $7.00 which wasn't mentioned. A heads up would have been appreciated."
