Diner Reviews
  • "Galvez was very disappointing. We were sent to the bar upon arrival even thought numerous tables were open. We had to almost tackle the bartender to put in a drink order which did not come before we were setted. The same bartender came to our table to take a food order. We requested out cocktails while we looked at the menu. He returned to the table a few minutes later to find out what we'd ordered. It went down from there. I ordered salmon which was greatly undercooked. Other food was bland & unexciting. We will not return."

  • "3rd time visiting Galvez. The food is always great. Unfortunately with it being so crowded this time, service was a little off, but waiter tried to make up for his miscues. We will be going back, but might want to find a less busy time, if there such a time. Apparently many people love this this too."

  • "This was the worst meal I've been to in New Orleans. We went for Coolinary and it was an absolute waste of money. Every course (including the drinks!) was either inedible or just enormously underwhelming for the price we were paying. The service wasn't good either. I would highly advise against this restaurant!"

  • "The food and service were both very good. The Paella Valenciana was the best paella we've ever had. The scenic view of the Mississippi River makes this restaurant even more attractive. We'll definitely be back."

  • "Excellent service, great food, best view in the city!"

  • "We picked Galvez because it was the only restaurant on the COOLINARY List that had paella, and a wide variety of menu items available for the $35 fixed price. We enjoyed the sangria that came with the COOLINARY menu. I ordered albondigas for an appetizer and they were very good. My wife had the mixed green salad. My entrée was paella vallenciana, but I realized there was no seafood. Since I had already started to eat, the hostess and serving staff assured me that they would fix it by bringing a bowl of freshly steamed mussels and a couple of shrimp to go with the paella. My wife had the salmon with asparagus and spinach which she found very good. Dessert included delicious slivered almond topped bread pudding and fruit sorbet."

  • "We had reservations on a "Super Moon" evening; this was the perfect place to be that night. The service was outstanding. The noise level was perfect, however if was a Sunday night and not crowded. The food was wonderful."

  • "I have heard great things about Galvez. Went there with friends on Dirty Linen night. The room is beautiful, overlooking the MS river. The staff were friendly and accommodating. All opted for the 3-course Coolinary Menu. The food was ok. Everything I tasted on my plate and others' plates was a little under-seasoned. The red sangria had too many fruitcake spices in it -- not a fan. The others enjoyed i, tho, so maybe it was me. I will go back to order off the regular menu. Wish it had more small plates since this is supposed to be a tapas restaurant. I didn't think there were enough, and nothing really different or unique. Bottom line -- absolutely nothing wrong with it, but nothing to get all that excited about either."

  • "...by far the most expansive Coolinary Menu choices this season! Everyone in our group (4) had a favorite, so we all got to taste a nice variety. Though seating was a bit unorganized the wait staff was very attentive. I'm so happy this venue has been revived."

  • "We were looking for a place to eat while on vacation and can across this location. great location and food. staff were amazing and friendly. the food was fabulous, we did the coolinary menu for august...but the sangria could have been better. otherwise a great location, beautiful view and great food."

  • "I went to galvez for the coolinary menu. There was live spanish guitar being played which contributed well to the ambiance. The limited menu offered a diverse selection. The food was pretty good not amazing though. I felt it did capture the Spanish style of cooking well. I enjoyed the paella and the bread pudding was fantastic. Would return for special occasion."

  • "Upon entering, we were placed by the window overlookin the Mississippi. It was gorgeous. We ordered the three course menu which came with sangria. It was nice. The food was outstanding, fresh, and excellent portion size. The service was great! The apps took a little long but the waiter comped our drinks without me asking. I would recommend this lovely gem."

  • "The restaurant was very accommodating, especially for a Fourth of July holiday. We were early for our reservation, but they seated us anyway--by a window with a terrific view of the fireworks. Given the holiday, the menu was price set but affordable. Each course was impeccable and timed perfectly. We had Peruvian ceviche, cheese stuffed potato croquettes with quince sauce, fresh halibut not overcooked, a scrumptious pork chop, bread pudding with black currants and caramel brandy sauce, flourless chocolate cake with real whipped cream and berries, and several glasses of life changing white sangria."

  • "We tried Galvez for my boyfriends surprise birthday dinner. Poor dear wore shorts to the place which I do not recommend for anyone, especially since this is a classy, upscale eatery. Food was reasonably priced and served with etiquette and finesse. Though we quickly discovered that paella isnt in our palette, quality and portion was very impressive. You cant beat the view of the rising moon over the Mississippi. The desserts are to die for too! Try the Chocolate decadence. Its the best thing ever!! Dinner for two ran us about $80, starters, entree, dessert and drinks included. Definitely recommend for a special occasion."

  • "Meal was outstanding! Excellent sangria, ceviche and paella! However we walked in and there is no one stationed to seat you. We walked into an open room with a bar on the left, not knowing what to do really. We asked at the bar and then a waiter was called over . We said we had a 6:45 reservation and they did not acknowledge that or even seem to care. They asked us to wait and we stood and watched while they set up the table...meal was good, hats off to the chef! Finally went to the restroom before we left and it was nice, but trash overflowed the container and surrounded the container on the floor. A little surprising...Hope they can improve the management because we really liked the food! Gracias!"

  • "We must have gone on an odd night for the restaurant. Everything was delicious, and the scenery was beautiful. There was just no one in there. I assumed Tuesday night would be slow, but it was just odd that so few people were in such a great restaurant. "

  • "Best thing about this restaurant is the view of the Missippii. Waiting staff were clueless and cleared up plates and drinks before they were finished. Overpriced. Would not recommend."

  • "We enjoyed this restaurant before so decided to return... perhaps we picked a bad night. the service was very slow and spotty and things were forgotten ( water, extra bread for our large table... water again) but I felt bad for them - there was a large birthday party going on in the private room and so we had the bartender and one server working the entire rest of the restaurant - on a Saturday night - In Nola - during JazzFest. Poor planning on the mgmt's part. "

  • "We came here for lunch on Easter and it was delicious! I'm sure the river view is beautiful on any day, but since the weather was so nice, they had windows and doors open to let in the light and cool air. The staff and service were both very good. The empanadas (crawfish that day) and the albondigas are definitely worth trying as well as the paella. They also have a nice rendition of shrimp and grits with the sofrito and chorizo. "

  • "Are here on a whim because few places which had an opening for French Quarter Fest. Service started out okay but went downhill quickly Bartender was a waiter for a table not a seat at the bar and that was the issue. He even said. I really quick with drink orders. That should have been a forewarning. Any time we asked for something we had to ask twice. When we got the dessert menu, it took him 45 minutes for him to return and that was also after us waving at him and multiple waiters to come. He then took our credit cards and then came back twice to ask each time how we wanted the bill split. Hostess had to do it because he just couldn't do the math. Food was good not great. Service ruined the night"

  • "Galvez is a lovely spot with beautiful river views. It's a block or two set back from the insanity of the French Quarter and has a lively but peaceful vibe. The service was great when my friends and I went. The food was not special but fine. I'd go back."

  • "In the middle of the French Market buildings, along the riverfront, up an elevator lies a gem of a spanish style restaurant. My wife and I like tapas, and enjoy sharing small portions of good and interesting dishes. That plus a table with a view of the river attracted us to Galvez. When we got off the elevator we were greeted by the owner and hostess. This is a family operation and it is easy to observe the love and effort made by mothers and daughters, to feed and please their patrons. The food was great, and the service was even better. Try everything, but leave a little room for the chef's special bread pudding for dessert."

  • "If you like food on the blander side, this is the place for you. Very low salt, very poorly seasoned. We ordered the BBQ prawns, vegetarian paella, and the seafood paella. Along with the patatas bravas and salads. Everything was underseasoned -- everything. BUT, if you're on a low sodium diet and enjoy bland food, this is the place for you. The service is great, the wine list is average and the actual building is quite nice. Very old person friendly kind of place."
