A word from Gallaghers Steakhouse
Founded by former Ziegfield girl Helen Gallagher and the colorful gambler and sports enthusiast Jack Solomon, Gallaghers opened as a speakeasy and steakhouse in 1927. At that time, the height of Prohibition, a good stiff drink and a great steak were hard to find in New York – except, of course, at Gallaghers.

New Yorkers come for the world-class cocktails and incredible steak – prime beef dry-aged for 21 days in Gallaghers’ legendary windowed meat locker. The combination of all-natural dry aging and cooking it to perfection over hickory coals makes for a steak unlike any other found in New York.

Beautifully prepared steak with unobtrusive friendly service. Wide choice of bourbon with a generous measure. Tables a little too close to each other for any privacy. I will come again on. Y next trip to New York.

We had dinner there after seeing Dave Letterman, the Ed Sullivan theater is right around the corner. The steaks were great, I mean that's what one goes to a steakhouse for , but the calamari appetizer was excellent as was the Wedge salad... actually everything was great.. Our server Ron was exceptional, the ambience and decor was really top shelf..We had a nice booth in the back of the dining room that was comfortable and quiet.. Overall just a terrific experience.

We ordered the T-bone steak for two - medium rare. Most of it was rare and not enjoyable. Considering the prices we expected more for our money. Would not go back there.

  • Couldn't get steak temp right

The waitstaff was subpar.. they constantly switched tables to be serving and at one point, our waiter actually suggested that if it were up to him, he'd go to Peter Luger's (I happen to agree). Disappointingly, they could not get my wife's medium steak done right. First it came out almost well, then it came out rare. Mine came out well-done, but close enough to medium-well that it was acceptable. By the time her steak was ready (20 minutes later), everyone else at the table had finished their meal. Completely unacceptable for a steakhouse of their stature. Shortly thereafter, prior to getting the bill, the waiter asked my wife to confirm what type of wine she was having. We assumed it was because he was going to remove that charge from the bill as an "apology" for a disastrous service for her, but instead it was so that he could point out that he accidentally charged us a dollar less on the bill because he typed in the wrong type of wine. With all of the competition in the steakhouse world, I would suggest going elsewhere. Where service and quality are equally appreciated.

Our family chose Gallagher's to celebrate my parents 50th wedding anniversary. We had a party of 15 ranging from 7 years old to 95 years old. Our service, meal pacing, and our food were all perfect. Gallagher's welcomed all of our family and made my parents feel extra special with the wait-staff's anniversary song complete with chocolate cake and a candle to commemorate the event. I would recommend Gallagher's for a romantic dinner as well as a group dining experience. You can't go wrong if you are a steak and seafood lover.

Having had the steaks in all the great steak restaurants I find that Gallagher's is as good or better than all of them. Plus, It beats having to travel to Williamsburg. And the fish is great too! The service is spot on, cocktails poured well and room always active. The meat locker is something to see as you walk in. It seems that there are people outside taking photos of it every time I go.

  • Gallaghers Steak House - Good but not outstanding
    OpenTable Diner Since 2014
    Dined on 11/19/2014
Myself and my girlfriend are over in NYC on holiday from Ireland. We went to Gallaghers as we wanted to try one of the more established steakhouses and Kean's was completely booked out during our stay. The ambiance is great. There is a real old style Mad Men vibe from the place that is really cool. I got the Rib Eye steak. I would have preferred the Porterhouse for 2 but my girlfriend doesn't eat red meat. The steak was very tasty and cooked to perfection at the requested medium rare. However, I have definetly come across better quality meat in Irish restaurants for much more reasonable prices (FXB's in Dublin for example). The sides were all presented well and tasted well but again not spectacular. My girlfriend got the salmon which she thought was beautiful. The waiting staff were pleasant but to be honest they were definetly not close to the best that we have encountered in NYC. This is an item I feel strongly about in American Culture. The expected tipping rate of a minimum of 15% on the cost of a meal is ridiculous. The waiting staff here would have performed a job which I considered to be less professional than some waiting staff in diners and other establishments we have visited during our stay. The job is essentially the same, yet due to the price of the cuisine being significantly higher, the waiter is expected to get more. If I was basing on it on who I thought performed a better job, I would have tipped waiting staff from other establishments more. Overall I had a really nice night and enjoyed the ambiance. However I did not feel the quality of the steak and the quality of the service received justified the price. I would just also like to clarify that neither the food or service were bad but when you are spending over $200 for 2 main courses and 2 rounds of drinks, you would expect it to be that little bit more special!

All around wonderful experience for me and my wife. We've been to some of the best steak houses in America and Gallaghers is among the best. My family's evening at Gallagher's was a disaster from beginning to end. Our reservation was for 10:00 and we arrived a bit early. We sat at the bar and ordered some cocktails, then waited until nearly 10:40 for a table. While waiting at the bar one of the bartenders was needlessly rude toward another group of patrons, shocking everyone within earshot. After we were seated we placed our order rather quickly (no appetizers) and finally received our food at 11:45. The mushroom garlic butter we ordered with the steaks did not reach the table with the food and took several minutes after we inquired about it. Of six people, two of them were pleased with how their steaks were cooked. I ordered the Ribeye medium rare, which is one of the most expensive cuts they offer....it was overcooked. The only positive things I can say about our experience is that the sides were good, and the host was extremely pleasant and apologetic about our wait time.

I returned to Gallagher's during a recent NYC trip for a wonderful meal with my wife. I had last been there in 1958 with my Dad. The place was remarkably like I remembered it, and the food was excellent. We both had the 10 oz Filet, with a shared Lettuce Wedge and Baked Potato, along with a nice bottle of Chatenauf du Pape. Our waiters were attentive and accommodating; worthy of our 20% tip. Our total bill was $260, which, although a bit pricey, was reasonable for the quality of food and service. The wine was $100. We both very much enjoyed our experience there, and were, sadly, too full from dinner to have desert. Tom, Charlotte, NC

The service and food were exceptional. Don't miss the Sweet Potato Mash. Our only complaint was that the Porterhouse could have been brought to the table a little warmer. It didn't have the right of the grill heat that we like. But other than that the wine list was good, our server was friendly and very accommodating and the food was top notch. Went to Del Fresco's a few weeks before and have to say had the same meal at Gallagher's for half the price.

Hello Gallaghers , Well Hello Gallagher's We're glad that you're back where you belong !!!! Service was outstanding and the staff seemed to be very proud of the new version of a classic NY Steak House I was here the first time when I was 8 years old with my father. About 5 or 6 years ago I wrote the place off. The quality was just not the same , the place looked tired and worn and the staff was distracted and inattentive. NOW things are better then ever ! This was our second visit since the re-launch and lunch was terrific . Planning to go back for dinner next time I am in the city.

This was once an old haunt of mine when I worked in Manhattan for 17 years and a got to steak house whenever I was in NYC. The revamped space and upgrades to back dining and open cooking area were nice-- but the food unfortunately went the other way. We ordered a massive share-able porterhouse for two and it arrived very rare -- too rare to eat-- and ice cold in the center. Also the signature deep flavor just wan't on a par with past experiences. We had to send back after one or two bites and it came back a little more cooked but still lacking in rich beef flavor. Sadly this one is now been struck off my list for my self and for any of my many dining friends as a recommendation.

We had a nice meal at Gallaghers. The waiter was pleasant, the food was good and we were happy to use Open Table to find a table on short notice. The entree price was acceptably high, but the a la carte items were huge portions and expensive. We were sorry the waiter didn't guide us a bit more regarding the side dishes. I felt my broccoli would have fed four adults and my wife's spinich was enough for at least two hungry adults. Each side was over $12 and seemed quite a waste.
