A word from Gallaghers Steakhouse
Founded by former Ziegfield girl Helen Gallagher and the colorful gambler and sports enthusiast Jack Solomon, Gallaghers opened as a speakeasy and steakhouse in 1927. At that time, the height of Prohibition, a good stiff drink and a great steak were hard to find in New York – except, of course, at Gallaghers.

New Yorkers come for the world-class cocktails and incredible steak – prime beef dry-aged for 21 days in Gallaghers’ legendary windowed meat locker. The combination of all-natural dry aging and cooking it to perfection over hickory coals makes for a steak unlike any other found in New York.

  • "Visiting Manhattan from Florida we had a wonderful dinner at Gallaghers. The wait staff was excellent. Our main waiter new the history of the establishment and his knowledge of the menu was impressive. Personally I had the porterhouse with my better half. I believe it was the best choice of the table. My soup starter - French onion soup was excellent - lots of onions and cheese. Almost like a dinner in itself! The sides were all fresh - my favorite creamed spinach was outstanding. The finishing touch of course was the NY Cheesecake. One of the best if not the best in NYC."

  • "We ate on july 3rd , booked late on the day via open table via the gallaghers website , easy and transparent ..... We are from the uk and won't claim to be nit picky gourmets , if the new york sirloin at 49 bucks done medium plus a side of mash doesnt leave you happy , full and marvelling at the depth of flavour ( so good that no sauce is needed but they give you it anyway ) you may have personal issues gallaghers can't solve . The service and welcome was excellent , if you want the bland " chain " service , Gallaghers won't be for you , sharp edged , good humoured New York style service , join in and they will love you back , been redecorated and relaunched since we last went , can't wait to go back , thankyou :0)"

  • "fronted by GM Brian (ex-Ben Benson's) Gallagher's is back as a premier NYC steakhouse. Walk in past glass fronted cases with steaks aging and a classic horseshoe bar to a refurbished dining room, with kitchen activity visible to all. Revamped menu; upgraded wine list. But the heart of the operation is red meat. The steaks are great. Service is swift and sure. There is no better steakhouse in the West 50's and for pre- or post-theatre, this is a superior option."

  • "Wonderfully aged beef, we had the porterhouse plate for 2 along with the crab cake and the jumbo shrimp dinner. The food was very good. The wine list had limited choice under $100 so we went with the Silver Oak for $130. Overall it was a nice dining experience."

  • "This was our first time back since their remodel. They did a tremendous job, it still looks like Gallaghers but with slight touches that more comfortable. We took our 2 teenagers to dinner and everything was great. The service is attentive without being intrusive. This may be the last great neighborhood steakhouse in the country."

  • "We decided to go here to celebrate our 20th anniversary while in NYC. Everything about our experience was excellent - friendly staff, great food, amazing wine list, elegant (yet not stuffy) environment. They even surprised us with a cake, candle, champagne and a happy anniversary song!"

  • "First I must say that I tend to be overly picky when it comes to food. With that said. I got to the restaurant a little early wanting to relax at the bar until our table reservation was ready. They say us right a way. Then they offered the wine list and when I ordered a scotch why took the wine list and have it to the table to my right before I know it was gone. The salad came out so full in was falling off the plate. I pokes through the salad for give minutes before we were offered pepper. I got some and a run right by my wife without asking me if I had enough or if my wife wanted any at all. The steaks came out before I could finish it and it was not cooked up to medium. The back waiter was so much better. Very attentive to our needs."

  • "Gallagher's is a classic steakhouse -- huge cuts of beef and side dishes large enough to share with the table. That may seem old fashioned compared to newer, trendier places, but at Gallagher's they do what they do extremely well. The dry-aged steaks are superb, and the service is perfect. We didn't try anything from the raw bar, but it looked extremely well done too. I can't wait to go back!"

  • "Thursday evening, early dinner. Our waiter spoke broken English and could not recite the specials. The menu included "opther soup", which our waiter escribed as "i don't know". We had to place our order twice to ensure it was correct; and still the food came out undercooked. The filet was good as were the potato lyonnaise, but the greens were mushy and flavorless. Rather limited wine menu and pretty unreasonable prces. This place has been around a while, but by the looks of the clientele they may be a dieing breed (literally). We left at 830pm anmd the place was almost empty."

  • "Excellent steak cooked to perfection. Our side dishes were really good too. This NY institution was recently remodeled and was the perfect place to have a quality pre-theater dinner. It had a nice cozy atmosphere with a wonderful waiter. I will return when I am next in NY."

  • "The dinner was excellent and everything was great until the coffee. This was stale, lukewarm, and tasteless. I will not go back there until they asssure me that the coffee is up to snuff. NMo meal is hgood wiothout a good cup of coffee; this was disgraceful.I cannot remember having had such a bad coffee in a NY restaurant. I sent it back 3x but the best they could do was the same pot. They klnow how I feld but had no reaction. On the other hand the tea for my wife was the very best."

  • "The newly renovated space looks good, what a steak house should look like. The food was good, expensive like all NYC steak houses. The theater district is flooded with steak houses, this one is probably one of the better ones."

  • "My wife and I stumbled unto Gallagher's years ago before going to a Broadway show. It is now a family tradition to go to Gallagher's before going to a show. It is consistently great food and attentive service."

  • "All perfect, the typical ambience of NY is so nice and the meat is amazing. The only problem was the air conditioned, so high and cold."

  • "Perfect location for the theater. Very accommodating and they get you out for your show. Steak was very good . done the way it was requested. Best onion rings I have ever eaten. Service was attentive and impeccable and it was a mobbed Saturday night."

  • "We ordered drinks, the wedge, the porterhouse and the fries. Everything from the drinks to the fries was delicious. We especially liked the porterhouse. We might even like it more than Luger's. We ate a late lunch/ early dinner and the service was wonderful."

  • "You are treated well at Gallaghers regardless of whether they know you. The quality of the food is outstanding. Their creamed spinach is the best I've ever tasted, and the sauteed mushrooms are the definition of perfect taste. Their steaks are mouth-watering good, and their ice cream is unforgettable. The waiters are knowledgeable, skilled, and courteous. The music was classy and not loud. I look forward to going back soon."

  • "Gallagher's is a class act when it comes to preparing red meat and certainly does an out standing job in the preparation of all of its other dishes. Its salads and the dressings are delicious. The wait staff is attentive and cordial to the customers. It is also interesting to view the aging of the meat in Gallagher's own meat locker as you enter the establishment. Highly recommend."

  • "Great food! Ask about the "Other Soup" - you'll see it on the menu. The service was second to none. Gallaghers has an interesting history ... ask about it. Had a wonderful supper and would go back again!"

  • "First time in New York from the UK and we wanted to experience the best Steakhouse the city had to offer. Gallaghers was recommended by friends who had been before. Upon our arrival at the restuarant doors we were greeted by the most polite and we'll dressed maître d' who seated us immediately. The ambience and the layout of the restuarant was fantastic. You could feel that old style New York steakhouse atmosphere. The staff were AMAZING, attentive, talkative but not too intrusive. Their knowledge of their ware was exceptional and helped us to choose the correct steak which was cooked to perfection. I'd say, probably the best steak I've ever had at a very affordable price. If I ever visit NY again, Gallaghers will be first on the list."

  • "We were disappointed by the quality of food and sides. Meat was a bit burned, carrots were not cooked enough, french fries were not good and mushrooms were dry. The mashed potato however was very good as per the cheesecake. We had heard a lot about Gallaghers so after two years living in the city we decided to go. We ate much better meat and sides in other restaurant in NYC. Decoration is very nice but we are more interested in having a good piece of meat!"
