A word from Gallaghers Steakhouse
Founded by former Ziegfield girl Helen Gallagher and the colorful gambler and sports enthusiast Jack Solomon, Gallaghers opened as a speakeasy and steakhouse in 1927. At that time, the height of Prohibition, a good stiff drink and a great steak were hard to find in New York – except, of course, at Gallaghers.

New Yorkers come for the world-class cocktails and incredible steak – prime beef dry-aged for 21 days in Gallaghers’ legendary windowed meat locker. The combination of all-natural dry aging and cooking it to perfection over hickory coals makes for a steak unlike any other found in New York.

Diner Reviews
  • "Went for my friend's birthday. Even though I noted it on the reservation, no attempt was made to acknowledge the birthday. She and I both wanted the Prime Rib. We were told they were sold out and then the server went into an unnecessary story about how the Jersey Boys cast came in and cleared them out. She ordered a medium well filet and it was delivered rare. She enjoyed the part of the filet that she did eat. Three others ordered filets and said they were very good. My lamb chops were delicious. My old fashioned was horrible. Sides were good but uninspired. We've had better meals at the Capital Grille. Overall was very disappointed for what should have been an amazing meal at what I thought was a New York City institution. My mistake."

  • "This is one of those gems that has all the history and dignity and grace of the Old World: gentlemanly, polite, very accomodating. But right on top of that is all the great stuff of the New World: great menu, comfort, beautiful view to the kitchen, lively atmosphere. We had a great meal served by two terrific servers...friendly wihtout being inntrusive. We enjoyed the meal, enjoyed a private conversation, and yet interacted with the servers enough to enjoy their personalities and their recommendations. Excellent evening."

  • "Rib Steaks were out of this world. Tender and cooked to perfection! No need for extras but we had creamed spinach and baked potato to share anyway. The iced tea is very minty and refreshing. Service was attentive but not overbearing. Overall a most fantastic evening!"

  • "The waiter we had was extremely courteous, attentive, and professional. He made some great suggestions and was engaging in conversation. The choice of wines was fabulous and the food impeccably prepared. Additionally, the bartenders mix excellent cocktails and are very attentive as well. An overall great experience and one that will bring me back."

  • "Food and service matched with the historical ambience. The tradition of a NYC steakhouse is evident from the time you enter. It's busy and buzzing a lively atmosphere. Great food and wine."

  • "I was very disappointed by the quality of the meat. It was tender but with no taste at all except the grill taste. It's very expensives for the quality of the food. And also the air conditioning was too cold. I am very sorry that it was not a good experience."

  • "It had been about 15 years since my last visit to Gallagher's in New York and though the ambience has changed a bit with the remodel the food, service and selection are the same. Just fantastic. I've been to this restaurant about five times over a thirty year period and it always exceeds expectations."

  • "Came to Gallaghers before their renovation and came back again and it's even better than before! Steaks were cooked perfectly and delicious as always. Crab cake was delicious and the service was very friendly. The date walnut bread is heavenly, I wish you could buy it from them! The best part is their open kitchen concept and you can watch the chefs cook your steak on the open fire cherry wood grills they have!"

  • "Visiting Manhattan from Florida we had a wonderful dinner at Gallaghers. The wait staff was excellent. Our main waiter new the history of the establishment and his knowledge of the menu was impressive. Personally I had the porterhouse with my better half. I believe it was the best choice of the table. My soup starter - French onion soup was excellent - lots of onions and cheese. Almost like a dinner in itself! The sides were all fresh - my favorite creamed spinach was outstanding. The finishing touch of course was the NY Cheesecake. One of the best if not the best in NYC."

  • "We ate on july 3rd , booked late on the day via open table via the gallaghers website , easy and transparent ..... We are from the uk and won't claim to be nit picky gourmets , if the new york sirloin at 49 bucks done medium plus a side of mash doesnt leave you happy , full and marvelling at the depth of flavour ( so good that no sauce is needed but they give you it anyway ) you may have personal issues gallaghers can't solve . The service and welcome was excellent , if you want the bland " chain " service , Gallaghers won't be for you , sharp edged , good humoured New York style service , join in and they will love you back , been redecorated and relaunched since we last went , can't wait to go back , thankyou :0)"

  • "fronted by GM Brian (ex-Ben Benson's) Gallagher's is back as a premier NYC steakhouse. Walk in past glass fronted cases with steaks aging and a classic horseshoe bar to a refurbished dining room, with kitchen activity visible to all. Revamped menu; upgraded wine list. But the heart of the operation is red meat. The steaks are great. Service is swift and sure. There is no better steakhouse in the West 50's and for pre- or post-theatre, this is a superior option."

  • "This was our first time back since their remodel. They did a tremendous job, it still looks like Gallaghers but with slight touches that more comfortable. We took our 2 teenagers to dinner and everything was great. The service is attentive without being intrusive. This may be the last great neighborhood steakhouse in the country."

  • "First I must say that I tend to be overly picky when it comes to food. With that said. I got to the restaurant a little early wanting to relax at the bar until our table reservation was ready. They say us right a way. Then they offered the wine list and when I ordered a scotch why took the wine list and have it to the table to my right before I know it was gone. The salad came out so full in was falling off the plate. I pokes through the salad for give minutes before we were offered pepper. I got some and a run right by my wife without asking me if I had enough or if my wife wanted any at all. The steaks came out before I could finish it and it was not cooked up to medium. The back waiter was so much better. Very attentive to our needs."

  • "Wonderfully aged beef, we had the porterhouse plate for 2 along with the crab cake and the jumbo shrimp dinner. The food was very good. The wine list had limited choice under $100 so we went with the Silver Oak for $130. Overall it was a nice dining experience."

  • "We decided to go here to celebrate our 20th anniversary while in NYC. Everything about our experience was excellent - friendly staff, great food, amazing wine list, elegant (yet not stuffy) environment. They even surprised us with a cake, candle, champagne and a happy anniversary song!"

  • "Gallagher's is a classic steakhouse -- huge cuts of beef and side dishes large enough to share with the table. That may seem old fashioned compared to newer, trendier places, but at Gallagher's they do what they do extremely well. The dry-aged steaks are superb, and the service is perfect. We didn't try anything from the raw bar, but it looked extremely well done too. I can't wait to go back!"

  • "Excellent steak cooked to perfection. Our side dishes were really good too. This NY institution was recently remodeled and was the perfect place to have a quality pre-theater dinner. It had a nice cozy atmosphere with a wonderful waiter. I will return when I am next in NY."

  • "Thursday evening, early dinner. Our waiter spoke broken English and could not recite the specials. The menu included "opther soup", which our waiter escribed as "i don't know". We had to place our order twice to ensure it was correct; and still the food came out undercooked. The filet was good as were the potato lyonnaise, but the greens were mushy and flavorless. Rather limited wine menu and pretty unreasonable prces. This place has been around a while, but by the looks of the clientele they may be a dieing breed (literally). We left at 830pm anmd the place was almost empty."

  • "The dinner was excellent and everything was great until the coffee. This was stale, lukewarm, and tasteless. I will not go back there until they asssure me that the coffee is up to snuff. NMo meal is hgood wiothout a good cup of coffee; this was disgraceful.I cannot remember having had such a bad coffee in a NY restaurant. I sent it back 3x but the best they could do was the same pot. They klnow how I feld but had no reaction. On the other hand the tea for my wife was the very best."

  • "All perfect, the typical ambience of NY is so nice and the meat is amazing. The only problem was the air conditioned, so high and cold."
    Dined on 6/23/2014
  • "The newly renovated space looks good, what a steak house should look like. The food was good, expensive like all NYC steak houses. The theater district is flooded with steak houses, this one is probably one of the better ones."
