A word from Gallagher's Steak House
Celebrating its 85th Anniversary, Gallagher’s has remained a New York City dining landmark; the decor and ambiance have been passionately preserved to create the Classic Steakhouse experience.

People come to Gallagher’s for the steak. Gallagher’s is the only steakhouse in New York City that grills their steaks over hickory coals. Our USDA Prime Beef is dry aged in-house for 21 days at a constant temperature of 36 degrees. Dry aging beef produces a more tender, buttery and complex flavor profile in the beef.

The combination of all-natural dry aging and hickory coals makes a steak you cannot find any place else in the New York area. This celebrated restaurant remains exactly the same as it always has been and so does the extraordinary mix of our clientele -showbiz and entertainment people from all over the world, sports figures in the boxing, horse racing, football, baseball, basketball and hockey world, and business professionals.

This time Gallagher's was a bit too noisy. The place was packed-full of customers. Service was slightly dissapointing. Been at Gallagher's before and the experience was better. Asked waiter for a very well-done steak, suggesting to split-open the steak to make sure it came back the way requested. The waiter did not allow finish suggestion, claiming he'll make sure the steak would come back the way ordered. Steak came back not really well-done (as requested). Sent it back. Steak came out excessively dry. Upon telling the waiter, he said that's the way it should come-out when steak cooked extra well done. Prior time at Gallagher's asked for same request, and steak was cooked to perfection.

We live in Southport, NC. My husband gave me a trip to NYC for my birhday. It had been several years since we had been to Gallagher's and nothing had changed. Great food (best steak I've ever had), service was excellent. The only thing that could have been better was the cost. If they were not so expensive, we culd come more often.

Our visits to New York are never complete without a trip to Gallaghers Steak house. We were introduced to this fine restaurant many years ago. The food here is excellent (steaks are the greatest). I love that the photos on the walls really give you a feel for how many years Gallaghers has been around. This place is good for groups as well as couples. We will always return.

My first experience at Gallagher's was a good one, but not great. The staff seemed to be very attentive at times, but other times missing in action. The original steak I received, the aged sirloin, was quite tough, despite being prepared medium rare. However, when I reluctantly sent it back and ordered the ribeye instead, this was the opportunity for the kitchen, wait staff, and management to shine. And shine they did! My new steak was prepared in a timely manner and just the way I like it. It was tender and juicy. A new side of sautéed spinach was also prepared to accompany the steak. And the manager visit our table to apologize and ensure all was well. I would certainly give Gallagher’s another try!

The ambiance and location are great and it would be on this basis that I would recommend this restaurant. The service was also very good as one would expect in a restaurant of this class. There are however other steak houses that offer better steaks. Overall, the value and the experience was adequate.

They are supposed to be known for there awesome aged steaks, but my wife got a filet ordered medium well that was cooked rare and had to be sent back. I orders the bone in ribeye cooked medium rare, and it was charred on the edges and cooked through too much. For a supposedly "high end" steak house to have these kinds of issues with tempreature and steak preperation I was suprised. They were way too overpriced for the poor quality food. I would not go back, and would recommend others to go to any of the steakhouses in the area.

I was a bit disappointed with our meal. I ordered the bone-in Ribeye that besides being a bit small was a bit tough. A place with the reputation and prices like this, you'd. expect a premium cut of beef. The side dishes were also very expensive for the size and quality. Other people in our party expressed the same disappointment.

After ready all the fanfare of how great the steaks are, my steak (the 14oz sirloin) was just average. It was a thin steak and I ordered it medium rare and it arrived cooked medium to well. I hate sending stuff back as it just ruins the dining experience even more. I felt the place has a lot of history, but the food was average, and overrated.

Lived in NYC for 23 years and have eaten at all the steakhouses except Gallaghers. Wanted to try it. Will not be back. Ambience is good - old New York, the waiter was very good, old school, friendly but professional. The food was dreadful. My $42 steak was less than 1/2 inch thick. Although it was flavorful, it was quite fatty with a lot of waste. And I suspect a tenderizer (MSG) was used. I've had better steaks at a corner Greek diner on the Upper East Side, and for half the price. The hash browns were dry and tasteless and the creamed spinach was average at best. You just cannot serve mediocre food like this for such high prices. THere are too many choices in steakhouses.

The food is always good here. The wait staff was nasty on New Year's Eve for lunch. The waiter made a face when my friend asked to take some of her lunch home. He took back our bread quickly before we were done with it. We felt rushed. We wanted to take the bread with us. Can be a bit pricey for just luch at $75.00. I would not go here for a very expensive dinner. There are other places where the waiters are nicer for that high price.

IIt was busy but not overcrowded for our visit. There was one very large party and this seemed to slow the wait staff and kitchen down considerably. Three or four different people were waiting on our tanle and this created inconsistency. We waited for our food, along with others, much too long until we were compelled to ask. Two sandwiches and three salads took an hour to get to us. Once a manager noticed, we had our food quickly. The manager offered "dessert on me" but no one from the wait staff was made aware and they didn't offer at conclusion of the meal. So overall just barely a C grade on service. The saving grace was the food which was all cooked appropriately, of decent portions and tasted great.

Old Standard "historic" steak house in the theatre district. The wife hade the pork chops - excellent / large portion. I had the house specialty - sirloin steak - best stek ever cooked perfectly over a hickory fire. The resturant is "old" with the pictures, tables, cjairs that haven't ben updated in years. Not a romantic spot - meat eaters heaven.

Steak was burnt and over cooked. Service was lackadaisical and uninterested. We called first for a 5:00 reservation and was told there was nothing at all available until 8:30 PM yet I went on Open Table and reserved a 4:45 with no problem at all. Then all through our dinner there were empty tables everywhere. For a $320 dinner for two people they need MUCH more attention to service and detail and making us feel like they CARE that we are there.

Does the owner know we live in 21 century? He still lives in 1920-30s... Decoration reminds me old western movies during dry laws. The waiters came from the same time. Why do you guys have no gravy at all? I love tomato or barbeque sauces for my steak!!! Side dish is as big as main course. And why does the ribay steak arrive in 15 minutes? I wanted it medium rare... Nobody cared... It comes MEDIUM because I am in american MacDonald's finally! No other options! One more pityfull night in gastronomy of NYC.

I admit, i am a steak snob. Listing my top to ... Wolfgang: Best grade porter house and service. Peter LugerReview Gallagher. Price close to Wolfgang, I have expected a lot but its delivery was much a disappointment on its quality. Porterhouse to share was not an option. Steak are per each individual serving. Thickness was thin cut and its quality of the steak could be rated at longhorn or any other low quality chain.Taste: If they are aged, then it is truly a disappointment. It has no kick to the beef taste and lack of a sensible..I will not go again and will be an advocate to advice others not to go because of the lack/serviceI asked for steak sauce (due to its dry cook, i eat rare) and both times they gave me soy-sauce. bad...

I was VERY dissapointed. My wife and I had passed by Gallaghers several years ago and kept it in mind for the future. It was not very busy the evening we dined. She ordered a filet and I ordered their signature strip steak. My thought was they are a premeir steak house they should be able to do it right. Both of our steaks were undercooked. She was able to eat hers but mine had to go back. I had cut it in half and carved a strip out of the middle before it was taken back. The resturant solution was to put it back on the grill. It should have been replaced, but came back charred. I have had better steaks at Outback. This dinner was a bitter dissapointment other than the pleasant company of my wife.

I've been to Gallagher's many times over the years, but this was the first time I was able to take my wife and good friends. The steaks are great, prepared to your spec and the sides were yummy as well. My problem was the overal smug and arrogance of the servers, especially ours. His name was Rambo, but his overall attention to my party was somewhere else. He was never close by when we needed something with his overall arrogance, he tried to be itimadating. Such an embarrassment for the restaurant. There are so many terrific steak houses to pick from in the city, I would definitiey go elsewhere next time.

When we came here for my birthday, Gallagher's was not packed, just moderately filled, which also meant it was not too noisy. Observing the maitre d', waiter, and bartender made me feel quite young, and it refreshing to see that this business has no mandatory retirement age. The dry-aged steaks were tasty and the sides were fine. The checkered tablecloths and paneled walls harkened back to an earlier age, making me think I was back in my year of birth.
