Last minute Valentine's Day dinner
pick. The previous reviewers were right that the food is great, a real treat. Not typical oily Indian food, and well spiced. We both got Thali vegetarian (Palak Paneer and Vegetable Kolhapuri) and were pleased and sated. It's not a fancy restaurant but the staff were attentive and at the end they gave us a red heart balloon. We'll be back."

Creative menu choices and great
food, but everything was about a level or a level and a half spicier than what we were expecting, so keep this in mind when you order. Service was very attentive."

There were 6 of us for dinner on
Saturday night. We had no idea what to expect. The food was AMAZING, the service fast and friendly, and the wine was great too. Loved it...can't wait to go again!"

Nothing beats southern coastal
Indian IMO, and Gajalee delivers it spicy...and expensive. I think they've changed their thali, because I remember more than 4ish teensy tiny little dishes on my plate last time I was here...hmm.. We had the lamb and fish thali and no doubt, it was good (spicccyyy wooohoo!) but a little meager for two hungry women (And not American-sized human women, our BMIs are well within normal). I also seem to remember the dishes being a little lighter, rather than so oily (I know, I know, I shouldn't say that about someone's Indian dish, but it's true). And for the price, they could've thrown in more than one chapati. Ah well, I'll be back, but probably as often as if the prices were more reasonable."

This will now be my go to Indian
in SF. Thali dinner was great!"

We went there with a large group
of family and friends but were very disappointed. The service was awful, one guy took our order but the guy serving us interpreted in his own way so we were given less food than ordered. Later it took a while for this to be corrected. Drink orders came much later during the meal and they drinks ( "sol kadi") were really not done right. Fish dishes were fine but unique compared to what was expected."

Not had a paratha as good as this
since I was in Kerala !! Really enjoyed every dish we chose, will definitely be going back."

If you like spice, this restaurant
has it, and then some!! Even the mild dishes were almost too much for the average eater I. Out group, and the medium level was plenty for our spice-loving eater. Delicious seafood entrees. They didn't arrive at the same time ,however, so the wait for the others meant that one dish got cold. Be sure to get rice to tame the fire. It's included with the order, though we were asked if we wanted it as a side."

The only Indian restaurant where a
Pomfret fry is available, much to the delight of my Bengali husband. The menu has plenty of options and the quality of the food was very good with the right level of spice and flavor. All the dishes came with a very good spicy sauce, raita and raw red onions which is pretty authentic. Now for the downsides - we ordered 2 glasses of wine with the food, one of them had little pieces of the cork floating in the glass. The food was served quickly, but the service was a little too eager after that, about every 5 mins somebody stopped by to ask if we were done with one dish or the other. However the quality of the food was excellent and we will definitely go back."

Was delicious, and not for the
faint of heart. Excellent Indian at really affordable prices."

We were there on a Sunday night at
6 and when we arrived it - kind of empty but then it filled up with families and couples. The vege samosas were very flavorful and light compared to most samosas. The special fried fish was very tasty and surprisingly moist inside. All-in-all a good experience. We tried several other traditional dishes and they were all quite good. The restaurant is very narrow so it can seem a little cramped."

This was a surprise lunch for the
Moms (friend's group) and they just loved it. The food was very authentic and the girls just devoured each and every bite of it. Thank you for such amazing food and I am definitely coming back here for another round :-)"

A good ethnic hole in the wall
that serves very good food at a remarkably low price."

Tastes from South India. Fairly
priced. Good food."

Located in a non-descript
storefront like setting on Valencia St, Gajalee offers a super dining experience. I have enjoyed S. Asian food for some time, but found the South Coastal Indian cuisine at Gajalee to be highly original, totally delicious- at a hard to believe price point. The sea bass I ordered was cooked to perfection and swimming in an innovative spicy sauce. The fish would have cost high $20's to $30 in most up-scale restaurants- $13 here. Limited wine and beer selection- start with cocktails next door at Locanda."

Nice indian place. cheap bottles
of wine. cant go wrong, but plenty of other places like it in the missions."
Dined on 3/22/2013
This is west coast Indian cuisine
at its best, the kinda food I would expect at home on special occasions. The place is not upscale, but a comfortable, friendly place with outstanding fish dishes. The only restaurant in SF that I have been to 4 times, and the next time is happening soon."

What an unexpected delight! We
love all kinds of food, and are particularly happy when we find something different. This is primarily but not exclusively seafood, and prepared in a style different than many Indian restaurants. The flavors were excellent, presentation visibly appealing, and the service very attentive. We will definitely return, and would recommend this to anyone who is interested a different region of Indian cuisine."

I really enjoyed the food. The
service was earnest. but rough around the edges. I hope they do well."

The staff was extremely fun and
friendly and what a refreshing take on indian food - with dishes ranging from costal Goa, Mubai, Northern India, and more."

Rare to find this kind of South
Indian Konkan (West Coast) coastal food from India. Excellent tastes."
Dined on 1/26/2013
Food is really, really good. Given
the flavors they're putting out I'm surprised there aren't more people here. Varan dhal and Paratha = best I've had. Wine is a steal at $18/btl. Staff is inexperienced and awkward, but eager to serve. They have sugar packets and S&P shakers on the table (weird), as if the food there would ever need either. Place was empty. Hope they make it."
Dined on 1/8/2013
The food was good and authentic
its not the same one as in Mumbai... made reservation ahead of time for group of 4 when we arrived no one seemed to cared about the reservation even though we mentioned we only got to seat when suitable table was empty."

Gajalee features seafood (and
meats) cooked the way of Western India. It is unlike most other Indian restaurants in the area. Gajalee did not have a tandoor oven and did not offer Naan. We went there for their seafood. We were a party of five and started with Fish Cutlets and curry leaf calamari, both excellent. We were then able to move on to try their Fried Pomfret and crab curry that were specials of the day, in addition to shrinp kolambi, Mussel Masala, along with rice, parotta, chapthi, and kmomdivada. We added a varan dhall and raita to cool things off. We found their cooking exceptionally good and about as hot and spicy as we could handle, we asked for medium hot dishes. This is our new favorite Indian Restaurant."

Excellent Coastal Indian food. I
had the King fish along with some veggie dishes, and it was lip smacking. The taste has been consistent and satiating. I went there for lunch and dinner, and enjoyed both times. It's reasonably priced. The 'thali' can be shared easily by 2 people."

This is now my favorite Indian
place in the city! It has some of the "traditional" indian dishes that you find at every Indian restaurants (and done very well) but also has dishes I had never heard of or tried before. This is the second time I've been here and I haven't had anything I didn't like. Sometimes Indian food can be heavy and I feel gross after eating it. Not here. Try: malavani fish curry, ambot theekat shrimp, chicken chittnad to name a few."

Delicious seafood and a nice
change from other Indian restaurants in the neighborhood."

Gajalee was a really great
experience! We went there with our 3 year old son, and they were just adorable. The service is excellent and the food amazing. i orderd the fish tali which came on a round plate with many diffent things to taste. My husband had a lamb dish that was also excellent. We would return any time and can only highly recommend this place!"
Dined on 10/5/2012
Food is authentic and very good.
Service is not good. Wine was way too warm. Waiters had difficulty understanding orders. It is worth it for the traditional and excellent fish and seafood dishes."
Dined on 10/2/2012
This is truly a neighborhood gem
with some delicious food - highly recommended the Thali Assorted Platter. I chose the fish as the main course in this platter and it was wonderful. Also, the platter has a little of everything for you try if you unfamiliar with Indian food. Service is friendly w/ nice ambience due to the dim lighting if you sit further into the restaurant. I will definitely return and encourage people to try it out."
