A word from Gaido's Seafood Restaurant
The toast of the Texas coast.
How can frozen fish be called fresh? The answer for anyone with snap is simple: it can’t. That’s why Gaido’s is the classic choice for fresh Gulf seafood. Patrons know Gaido’s is real, when others are clearly not. From red snapper and blue crab to white tablecloths crumbed with panache, there’s no denying Gaido’s is one-of-a-kind in a world of imitation. Now, after four generations of filleting, frying, grilling and baking, Gaido’s has grown into the picture perfect place of traditions– birthdays, anniversaries, retirements, reunions. As the largest fresh fish house on the coast, Gaido’s can serve up to 2,500 happy diners a day. Plus, with the Pelican Club, private dining, catering, a new food truck and parking galore…it’s easy to see why Gaido’s -– for over 100 years – is truly the coastal classic.

My wife and I have been driving from Houston to Galveston to eat at Guido's on our anniversary for the last 30 years, and we always make it at least 3 or 4 more times per year just for the food and service. We have never gotten bad food or service, which I can not say for any other restaurant that we frequent regularly.

We began with the "Soldier Shrimp Cocktail" and were not disappointed. Our entrees, "Shrimp Peques" and "American Red Snapper; charcoal grilled with the "Lump Crab Nick" topping, did disappoint us. After a few bites of the Shrimp Peques, the flavor of the brown sugar chipotle glaze dominated over everything else. As for the American Red Snapper, the fish was overcooking and dry. I believe another "cooking preparation" (broiled or seared) could have produced a fish that had the traits listed on the menu ("moist meat with distinctive sweet, nutty flavor"). There are many other combinations of fish offerings and when we return to Galveston, we will indeed eat at Gaido's.

This local favorite was highly recommended in all the tourists brochures. We had a decent meal but not our beat. Scallops were so small they were a waste to order. I'd you like scallops be sure to see the size first. The lobster bisque was super. The stuffed flounder was overrated for the price. Service was excellent with a lot of staff helping. Ahi was good but little dry. Scalloped potatoes excellent. In all a very expensive meal with average results

If you like crab, be sure to order the 'crab cheesecake' appetizer. You will not be disappointed. --and if you like excellence in service - ask to be seated in Lis' area. She is very attentive and listens well - again, you will not be disappointed! Kudos to Gaido's staff of diligent workers -- Over the course of the many years we have enjoyed Gaido's fresh seafood (since the '70's) and most excellent atmosphere, we noticed a 'moldy - musty' type, lingering 'stinch' that was gone this time. I am pleased to announce the restaurant seems to have finally found a way to eliminate that odor. Many kudos - the fresh seafood served was even better than ever with the freshness of the restaurant!

As always, the food was outstanding. Unfortunately, this time the service was very, very slow. We waited longer than usual to have our order taken, to receive our food and over 10 minutes for a dessert menu. We left without ordering dessert. I must say that we were disappointed. The food was very pedestrian and the menieure snapper was way overdone and salty. We will try at least one more time, but will stick w/ the freshest, least prepared offerings (like the crabmeat and avocado). Wine list was better than expected and a good value (e.g. Rombauer chard). Brittani was a very good server.

We chose to come to Gaidos for the first time for our Anniversary. However, the girl at the reservation podium was not friendly. The service was great and our server Kristen S. was great! The only thing is she forgot to order our crab cake but it was okay because she made up for it by making our night so special until we didn't even mention it to her. The food was good but my husband complained that he was not give a whole piece of catfish that it was cut in half and that his seafood platter was not worth the cost. The asparagus is great there and we enjoyed the pecan pie but did not know that is was going to be served hot so we regret not getting the ice cream on top. Overall, it's a nice place to dine at night with a date.

For our family, any visit to Galveston includes at least one meal at Gaido's. It has an upscale yet relaxed ambiance, outstanding service and food that is to die for. They have a good wine list and happily make recommendations. Our favorites there are the soup combination (small cups of gumbo, bisque and the soup of the day); crab au gratin, fried asparagus, shrimp peques, stuffed shrimp and shrimp and blue cheese grits. They offer beef and other dishes for non-seafood lovers. The desserts look delectable but we are always too full to indulge. Prices seem reasonable considering the quality and quantity of food. I would recommend reservations because it is a well loved and popular restaurant with both locals and tourists.

I enjoyed my dinner at Gaido's. It was nice to patronize a restaurant that has been in business for so long. Good food and great service. I ordered the scallops blackened and though I learned that that style of cooking scallops is not my favorite, the food was still good. The chocolate brownie cake with ice cream was soooo yummy.

We were seated within just a few minutes. The water was prompt and friendly. Fish dishes we had were good with average portions. I had golden tile with parmesan crust and asparagus. Was very tasty and good portion size. Others had a special of stuffed flounder which they said was good but a little bland. The ceasar salads were large and fresh tasting with slightly tangy dressing.

I ordered a spicy bloody Mary which was watered down, my husband had a beer which was flat. For dinner I ordered what the server recommended which was ahi tuna blackened with the "Nick" topping. Both of these were supposed to have a lot of spice, seasoning and flavor. What was served to me was the most bland piece of fish I have ever eaten. I had 2 bites and simply didn't want to swallow anymore. My husband got the stuffed shrimp which also were supposed to be spicy but came out more like brown sugar over the top sweet stuffed shrimp. A good server should notice when she takes the plate and your entire entree is still there. All in all I feel the food was ok. Nothing spectacular and for the price I should have gone to Landry's.

Great seafood that is well prepared. Shrimp cocktail while not big is of top quality, fresh and perfectly cooked. Little pricey but portions of fish are enough to satisfy a hungry diner. Been in business for 103 years for a reason. Only significant improvement would be if it was built over the water like Scomas in Sausalito, CA.

This was our first time to Gaido's. Our waiter had little knowledge of the menu or wine list. He kept repeating that he was new but didn't offer to find out the answers to our questions. His service was spotty and the food was mediocre. The only highlight of the night was the pecan crunch dessert. We will not be returning or recommending this restaurant. We decided to go with the special fish of Saturday evening--Tile Fish. although we had never eaten it before, our server did a nice job of describing the rather rare opportunity to fish for it, the special depth one has to go to harvest it--as well as the delicate texture and mild flavor. My husband and I typically each get a salad or soup and then split the entree. He had a cup of gumbo, I had the three-soup sampler--both great. We went with the server's preparation recommendation for the Tile Fish--broiled and then we chose the topping--callee, I think, Maria--a creamed crab topping--great! One portion was perfect for the two of us. We don't do dessert--so, along with a nice bottle of a Willamette Valley Pinot Noir-we were happy.
