Diner Reviews
  • "The food at Gadsby's was spectacular. The grilled shrimp were seasoned and cooked perfectly. I ordered the salmon entree and tried my friend's rack of lamb. Both entrees were delicious. I had the Italian Pinot Grigio, which accompanied my seafood meal really well. The ambience, food and service were great. We were lucky to have outdoor seating on their patio. We will definitely go back to Gadsby's."

  • "Whenever we visit the Wash DC area, we enjoy staying in Alexandria, VA because of its colonial charm. Gadsby's Tavern is the epitome of colonial charm from the ambiance and period furnishings to the period-dressed waiters. The food was very good especially the grilled shrimp appetizer and the filet mignon. Our only disappointment, however, was the crab cake appetizer which did not taste like crab at all but rather a very bland filler. We chose the crab cakes with the thought of Gadsby's being so close to MD that the crab cakes would surely be superb. Sadly, this wasn't the case. Other than this, however, our dining experience was very pleasant and we will surely return."

  • "You have to visit this place oozing with history and the bonus: the food is great! Had the French Onion Soup and Crab Cake, both excellent!"

  • "We went to Gadsby's Tavern at the recommendation of a friend. Maybe he was there on a really good night or we were there on a somewhat off night. We had reservations for 5:30 which is right when they open. They were a little behind in setting the restaurant up so we had to wait at the front (but they gave us menus to look at while we waited). We were finally seated and placed our orders. The wine selection was okay but nothing to brag about, the bread was kind of dry and our dinners were okay. Mine was barely warm and I had to send it back to have it microwaved. The ambience was cool and that was the best part of the evening. Not that it's a bad place, but we won't go back. There are too many other wonderful offerings in the area."

  • "We're new to the DC area and wanted to try a new place in Old Town. The ambiance is wonderful and I can't wait to go again. A man in full colonial costume comes around and chats with guests and has quite the sense of humor. The food is lovely- try the Peanut Soup!"

  • "Stepped in and, except for the computer at the front desk, you would have thought it was 1780. Ben Franklin is walking around conversing with each table. George and Martha Washington, along to Thomas Jefferson, are sitting at the table next to us. Some of the beers are based on the orgininal recipes of the founding fathers. Half the menu claims to be authentic pub fare from the period. Service is top-notch and the food was excellent. Could not have asked for a better evening."

  • "We were disappointed that we were put in the back room, away from all the activities. One of the reasons we chose this restaurant is their reputation for entertainment with a strolling musician during the meal. We were cut off from this activity. We will probably never go here again. The food was mediocre as well."

  • "We just stopped in for lunch and ate the peanut soup because it had good reviews. The soup was good and we enjoyed a couple beers. They weren't very busy when we were there so it was pretty quite."

  • "Our family of four (including two picky teenagers) had a wonderful dinner at Gadsby's. We had the Seafood Newburg - filled with huge shrimps and crab in a nice sauce; Grilled Pork Chop - perfectly grilled and very tasty; the Lemon Chicken - again perfection; and the Salmon - very good. We ordered an extra side order of scalloped potatoes as the Lemon Chicken was on the smaller side - the other dishes provided plenty. On the night we were there, they only had two waitresses in the dining room and they really could have used three - we ended up waiting for things a little longer than we would have liked. Other than that, each food item was made from high quality ingredients and was cooked perfectly. I would highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "Nothing like they advertise. Our waiter was not dressed in the period of George Washington nor did he speak like it was the 1770's. In fact he was of Asian descent and although I DO NOT have a problem with that, I could not see how he would be working there at that time in history. Last time I was there, they had a minstrel walking around singing songs of the period and talking to customers as if was that time. This time they had nothing like that and my Granddaughter was extremely disappointed because I told her that was what she would see and hear. I have eaten at Gadsby's many times and experienced the colonial atmosphere but not this time and so this will be my last time."

  • "Was disappointed the veggie burger has been removed from the menu."

  • "The décor, ambiance, and servers dressed in colonial attire make the overall experience very unique and wonderful. We enjoy coming occasionally for dinner, but it was specially selected when we were deciding where bring take out of town guests for dinner. It's a taste of history, culture, and great food all in one."

  • "We dined with a party of 6. The salmon was the best choice and the other meals were just okay. Historic atmosphere and on some special ocassions there is a period actor."

  • "We have been here several times before over a 15+ year timeframe and have yet to be fin the food and usually not dissapointed in the service. This past time was an exception. The service was average at best! We took friends from out of town and had them prepared for a unique experience with the wait staff in "period costume" and an atmosphere of our Colonial era. What we got was a server who was not dressed in period costume who appeared almost bored to be there. We waited a long time to place our drink order and even longer to place our dinner order. Not at all what we are used to from one of our all time favorite places. To be fair, however, the food was excellent and prepared perfectly."

  • "First time we dined here. Food is great and targeted to the late 18th century which is the theme of the restaurant. Dinner was illuminated by candlelight, real candlelight with little electric lighting which almost replicates the feeling of the time. There is a great guy in character walking around talking to folks, again, using verbiage of the period; it was truly entertaining. We'll definitely go back and plan to take out of town visitors. I've lived in the DC burbs for years and never knew this place existed in Old Town Alexandria. Everyone must visit this place!"

  • "Great "date night" with my husband at Gadsby's Tavern. As locals we typically avoid the tourist attractions, but we will most definitely go to Gadsby's again. Food and service were wonderful - at the suggestion of the waitress we had the seafood Newberg and the beef bordelaise with peanut soup as a starter. The food was really very good, but the entertainment was even better. John Douglas Hall, a rather famous colonial re-enactor, held forth with an amusing oratory, then serenaded the room with a lute and 18th century songs. Well worth the trip to Old Town, and at this time of year, parking is no problem. Thanks for a fun night Gadsby's!"

  • "Excellent meal with great service. The visit of the period performer in the dining room was an added treat. The staff was very knowledgeable of the dishes and were willing to substitute sides to accommodate us. Overall, we were very pleased and will return again."

  • "I celebrated there my fifth anniversary with my partner there. It is funny, but both he and I visited the restaurant before with some extra "projects" - I ordered for my partner a special dessert (very yummy, he let me try), and when we finished the meal, the waitress brought first something for me - it was th surprise from my partner, with a question if I will marry him! And I said yes!!! The food was very good. The French onion soup was delicious and the duck very soft and moist, with sweet notes of Port wine. The service was also super friendly. For sure I will be back."

  • "If you like history and are visitig the DC area this is not a place to be missed. You are literally transported back to the 1700 hundreds by the period garbed staff, hurricane lamps with live burning candles and pewter plates. The food is excellent and the service outstanding. Martha Washingtons puff pastry was unforgettable!"

  • "Food was good, and the atmosphere is quite authentic. The service was pretty slow, however, and the prices seemed a bit high. I would recommend it, but with reservations."

  • "Gadsby's is such an important Alexandria landmark that it should be tried at least once. The food is good, but not spectacular, but enjoy for the ambience."

  • "Gadsby's Tavern is semi-fancy. The food was good, just a little on the pricey side. I would come here for a special occasion, i.e. guests coming from out of town. My wife and I enjoyed the period-style (18th Century) costumes the staff was wearing."

  • "fried oysters were excellent on theh appetizer list. The shellfish newburg had a good taste but the risotto was lacking. It was white rice that was steamed, nothing fancy."

  • "We loved this place! We were looking for colonial atmosphere and learned about this place. We wanted to bring our large group and they could not accommodate us as it is an old house. So we took our family of 6 instead. The seating is tight but it works with the tavern feel to the place. They maintain the colonial theme with their menu. The food was excellent! There is an actor who plays the part of colonial gentlemen and walks arounds visiting with patrons. He was very quick witted and entertaining! The waterfront area of Alexandria is charming and I'd like to go back during the day. Overall, I highly recommend Gadby's!"

  • "Great food, good service, quiet, romantic atmosphere. My husband and I love coming here. My only complaint is about the chairs, pretty sure they've been around since George Washington frequented the tavern, they're very uncomfortable. That's certainly no reason not to eat there though."

  • "The evening started off with a poo reception by the hostess. When finally shown to the table, the menus had to be passed across the table because of poor positioning of the table. The food is passable. The chicken and the duck were acceptable but not outstanding. The beef dish I had was overcooked. I ordered med rare and it was well done. I ordered dessert which was never delivered. I can only assume it was lost in the other orders and the drink orders. The service was friendly but stretched. The room does lend itself to a large group or crowd. The noise level was almost unbearable. This is a restaurant that I would take someone too only for the colonial experience, and even then with a caution."

  • "Absolutely charming! Came with my date. She's an historian of the colonial era. and she loved it as much as I did, maybe more. The food was outstanding. We both had the filets mignon, grilled to perfection. The atmosphere was just right for conversation and a romantic evening. Our waiter was very professional, and courteous. We look forward to coming again."

  • "It's been in a historic building since colonial times and tries to replicate the food and atmosphere to the extent possible now. We were there on a slow night, so it was quiet and the service was very attentive. Great place to take out-of-town visitors to something different and unique to the area. Being in old town Alexandria, there is an excellent chance to walk around before or after dining. Parking is on the nearby streets and can be difficult to find some of the time and/or require feeding meters. Not all that close to the King Street Metro station, but there is frequent bus service that comes within a block of Gadsby's."

  • "Simply put, Gadsby's is the place for any occasion. I brought friends there from out of town and everything was perfect. Sharing the history of the building with them made the evening that much more exceptional. The food was perfect, the service was impeccable, and the ambiance is exactly what you would expect."

  • "Lived in Alexandria for almost 14 years and finally tried Gadsby's Tavern. Thought it was an expensive fine dining establishment but its more of a historical tourist place. Food was mediocre - not bad but not great and given the vast dining options in Olde Towne I would not recommend it. Servers were polite and prompt. Wine list is on the low end."
