  • "The food was great but I love the old man who comes in and greets the guests in his early American dress and accent."

  • "Mixes neighborhood history with culinary history and great food. Staff are friendly and helpful and food is always good. Its a nice touch to any visit to Old Town for anyone with an interest in history."

  • "My husband and I were in Old Town Alexandria for a get-away weekend, and decided to try this historical restaurant. In addition to the history and the charm that comes with it, we were pleasantly surprised at how delicious the food was during our visit. Thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the experience."

  • "We arrived @5:45 for a 6pm reservation with 5 of the 7 in our party, no one was at the host stand to greet/seat us. We informed the waitress that the remaining 2 were delayed in traffic. We ordered appetizers which took nearly 30 min to arrive. The 2 remaining people arrived just as we were finishing appetizers, we ordered entrees 1hour later we inquired about our entrees & requested that the children's cheeseburgers be served immediately. We also asked to speak w/a manager about the service. The manager never appeared, the waitress tried to blame US for the slow service. 2 hours after we were first seated, we left without our entrees. This used to be a unique dining experience in Old Town, now it is a poorly managed tourist trap."

  • "The food and service are not at all what they used to be a Gadsby's. The interior of the tavern looks like it needs a good cleaning, not to mention a new coat of paint. Food portions are now much smaller, and our entire meal was just barely warm, not even close to hot. It's obvious that the food is not being cooked to order. The quality of the food itself leaves much to be desired, as the prime rib I ordered was cold, served with no au jus or gravy, and the vegetables served with it were under-cooked and hard. The waitress, an older woman, seemed to have trouble remembering our orders, and made several mistakes that needed to be corrected. I suggest going just once for the ambience and history, but keep your expectations low."

  • "We ordered the jumbo crab cakes which were not flavourful. We also ordered their rendition of a Sheppard's pie. Both meals were served to us lukewarm. None of our food tasted really fresh."

  • "Best meal I have had in a very long time If I lived within 100 miles I would eat there often."

  • "Our Dinner with my son, a friend & her son was spectacular! We loved all of our different orders. Found prices very good. My son's Filet was as ordered and wonderful. My Lamb chops were spectacular! The ambience of the restaurant was relaxing and gave us the feeling of a time period gone by. We all loved our evening there...enough said."

  • "One in the party did enjoy their meal, first time to eat duck. Service was adequate, but not it has been in the past, superb. Would not recommend to another person because of the ambience is gone. Place is dirty, stairwell to the rest rooms needs repaired and painted. Food preparation area should be blocked from the view of the client. Will not go back, though we have probably been to the restaurant over two dozens times."

  • "We really love this place! We always put it as a top place to visit when in DC. It is our favorite place to eat when visitng!!"

  • "One of the highlights was John Douglas Hall, walking around in costume, inhabiting the character from someone in the late 1700's. He would stop at the table and talk to us, in character. He had great repartee and also played the lute and sang."

  • "Great food and wonderful service. The period characters who joined us occasionally throughout the meal were very entertaining!"

  • "We looked up this on line and saw it had a lot of history surrounding it and wanted to expense where George Washingotn had eaten!"

  • "Prime Rib, duck and crab cake were outstanding. Food was mostly excellent except for the Yorkshire pudding. So sorry they no longer have pecan pie. Been going here for many years but have not been recently. Was pleased to see that the historical character and ambiance is in still there. Now, as an older person with a disability, I wish there was a first floor rest room."

  • "A wonderful place to dine that has not dipped in quality since George Washington and Thomas Jefferson ate there. Great piece of Americana. Food fitting for a foodie."

  • "Took my daughter for Sunday brunch. My breakfast dish was wonderful, her sandwich nothing too special. We did enjoy our time. Excellent service and the museum tour next store was fabulous. Our tour guide really knew her stuff. I would go to the restaurant again. Loved being in the midst of all that history."

  • "Always take visitors to the area here as the historic nature of the restaurant and the consistently good food make it a special treat and is always remembered."

  • "We were meeting up with friends on a brief visit to DC and dined here on a rainy midsummer night. The rain poured as we hopped off the King Street trolley, and made for great atmosphere and a very enjoyable evening. The quaint ambiance with pewter plates on wooden tables and a candle lit glow took us way back in time as the friendly waitress chatted in costume. The food was excellent- we were served jumbo shrimp in sherry laced sauce, tasty salmon in herbs and some real good meat pie.The scalloped potatoes were delicious! It was a good occasion and we were so engrossed in conversation that time just flew by. It was a privilege to dine in this historic tavern- and will be very memorable for us all!"

  • ""George Washington ate here." That is perhaps the only notable thing about Gadsby's. The food is mediocre at best. I'm certain that the 4 adult entrees at our table (duck, meatloaf, lamb and tenderloin) all had the same sauce. Variety here is apparently not the spice of life. For the money, approx $26 per entree, would be much better spent elsewhere. Our server was very attentive -- but I had a very difficult time trying to reach the restaurant directly to add to our party size. They did not return phone calls or emails. Also our dining space was completely cramped. We were a group of 8 seated next to another group of 8. We were unable to totally back our chairs out to get up and the server couldn't walk in between the tables."

  • "To have dinner in a historic location was an experience. The food was great. Unfortunately, our server was not the friendliest."

  • "The table we sat in had a great window view of the street, and the candles on the table led to some nice ambience. However, the food and service left a lot to be desired. First, my husband ordered the George Washington's Favorite which was supposed to have duck breast. Instead he got two overcooked duck legs. He was very disappointed. I ordered the Shellfish Newberg which left a lot to be desired. The shrimp were also overcooked. I think our dinners were lukewarm and overdone because they were sitting under the heatlamp for 30 minutes or so, since it took forever to get our dinner after we ordered. Also, our server was not friendly at all and seemed to disappear a lot."

  • "This was my second time there, & while I still think it is a special place with good food, the service was appalling! Our waiter clearly didn't want to be there. The meal moved along at an acceptable pace, so we didn't feel entirely rushed, but he was rude & ruined the experience of enjoying this historically significant space. The while staff was fairly incompetent, hostess included, but since it was a national holiday, it may have been their "C shift" of service people. I was disappointed overall since I was bringing 4 people who had never been."

  • "Unique atmosphere and historic feel. The food definitely leaves a lot to be desired. Plates, no matter what you order, come with the standard protein, a cone shaped pile of rice and bland, flavorless steamed vegetables. The menu definitely needs a refresh. I get that they want to be authentic and serve 18th century type dishes, but they could be doing more to spruce up the dishes."

  • "Overall we have enjoyed our visits to Gadsby's. Our last visit, however, was unusual, and hopefully just a fluke. Every time we've visited in the past the servers are dressed in period attire, the food is served on cute metal plates, and there are nice bread varieties. This time, however, no period attire, regular white plates, and one type of not-so-great bread. Assuming these changes are not permanent, we'd gladly go back, but if they are, maybe we'll just keep our memories of the old Gadsby's."

  • "I was told what an amazing place this was so we drove out of our way on a recent trip to DC just to eat here. Everything was ok, but not exceptional. We were in a 200+ year old building but that was the end of the ambiance. I was told there were characters from the period that came around but we never saw anyone. Very disappointing."

  • "Limited menu recalling tavern fare of George Washington. Nice ending to our day with grand kids at Mt. Vernon. Portions large. Enjoyed prime rib and glazed duck dishes. Kids liked mac & cheese w pig in poke. Deserts not exciting."

  • "Gadsby's was recommended to us by family members who had dined there previously. We had a lovely evening, thoroughly enjoyed the ambience and food, and would highly recommend this restaurant to others. It was also one of the highlights during our stay in Alexandria and while visiting DC."

  • "The food was good but the lack of air conditioning or ineffective made the food difficult to enjoy!"

  • "The food and ambiance were great, and the prices were quite reasonable. I highly recommend the lamb. My colleague and I, however, were not expecting the "in character" fellow and it made us feel rather awkward. Especially as he assumed we were on a date, and made some raher suggestive (but funny) comments. If we had realized that was going to happen, I think we would have rolled with it more easily."

  • "This old tavern has been maintained in the original building with attention to details. The service is prompt and properly solicitous. The meals were excellent. The wine list is sufficient. The conversation with the resident colonial was fun and entertaining. He made interaction easy. We had a great time."

  • "If they servers the quality of food since Washington's time with the great service. They should then keep up the great work. Don't miss your chance for great food by candle light."

  • "Dinning at Gadsby's is a treat when I meet family and friends in Alexandria. The food is always good (great for the price) and the unique atmosphere is a nice change of pace from standard restaurants. On this particular evening I arrived early with my family and decided to have drinks in the courtyard while waiting for our other guests. It was such a beautiful night we had our meal outside too (a rare treat when days are usually much hotter). The wine, food, service, and company were all excellent and our whole party felt right at home! Kudos to all the staff for treating us very "Presidential" and making our dinning experience one to remember!"
