Diner Reviews
  • "Have been telling everyone I know who appreciates GREAT food about evenings at G. Wed-Sat evenings turn this exceptional sandwich shop into a wonderful prix fixe dining experience at a great price. Sandwich shop ambience is completely overwhelmed by the food, experienced wait staff, and enjoyable wine parings. We are also excited about trying "Sunday Gravy" as well - but haven't gotten there yet. This is a gem -- but a small space, so maybe I don't want too many of you to know about it."

  • "There was a group of 6 women who were literally screaming for 30 minutes after we arrived and no one asked them to settle down. Our waiter changed our seat and gave a complimentary Cava but really!! We had a 4- course menu during restaurant week. The antipasto was good, both pasta courses were average at best. Pork was good, fish average. Chocolate desert was excellent, Tiramasu tasteless."

  • "Perhaps this was just another case of restaurant week gone wrong, but our food was pretty bad. Since the RW menu was pretty similar to their normal tasting menu, I thought it would work out, but our meals were very disappointing. The appetizers (Squid ink pasta & goat cheese gnudo) were so salty it was hard to eat them. I got snapper for the main, my friend got the pork. Both were okay but nothing to write home about. The snapper was a little over cooked and flavorless, then doused in an extremely rich sauce, not very balanced. Got tiramisu for dessert, which I love, but after taking a bite, we decided this one wasn't worth the calories. Love Mike Isabella, but this was not a great dining experience. Sad since I'm right in the neighborhood."

  • "I went out to dinner with 3 other friends for restaurant week and this place was great. They offer 4 courses instead of 3. All three were great, but dessert was amazing. The service was great. Our server was friendly and able to kindly answer all of our questions, and we had a lot of them. I'd definitely return."

  • "The idea of ponying up $60 per person for tasting menu + wine felt a little weird when we first arrived at G. I mean, it definitely has plenty of the sandwich shop elements that you can't just hide for dinner. However, the small seating area is charming and well laid out. The staff is attentive and chatty and the bathrooms are beautiful (shared with Kapnos). We were so glad we did the wine pairing - every glass was delightful and it was a bargain for $25 per person for 3 glasses of wine (to go with our antipasti course, starter and entree) plus a lovely muscadet for dessert. All the food was well prepared, beautifully presented and delicious. We loved the gnudi and the snapper. Desserts are awesome! Worth a trip and fun for foodies."

  • "The tasting room at G has a fun vibe with high quality tasting menu. We had a great time and and enjoyed a wine pairing as well."

  • "A little slow. 4 course tasting menu took 2 hours."

  • "Couldn't have been happier with our dinner at G's. Service was great, the food was amazing... it was everything we had hoped it would be."

  • "Enjoyed the tasting menu a lot. Great way to get to try a variety of dishes. Crispy pig's head and ravioli with mint pesto filling were notable, but the lamb shoulder was the top of the mountain."

  • "From the moment we walked in, until the moment we left the service was superb! The tasting menu was spectacular and quality overall was perfect. We will be back!"

  • "Food was creative and delicious. Service was attentive and passionate about food. For the price, this tasting menu can't be beat."

  • "The sandwiches at lunch are unbelievable -- especially the hot ones made with baby animals, like suckling pig (but also the roast cauliflower). Dinner is an Italian tasting menu. At dinner, the food is all beautiful and carefully prepared with interesting, subtle flavors (not your typical, heavy-handed Italian). This has become one of my favorite DC spots. I love it so much, I want it to do well. But don't keep me from getting a reservation!"

  • "Staff was very friendly, attentive and professional. A slower explanation of the tasting menu would have been great - but otherwise - great job. The food was ah-mazing. We did not feel rushed to finish our meal. We had a great time"

  • "My wife and I love this place! Second time dining, second great meal. Very inventive menu items, and a great value at $40 prix fix for 4 courses. The chef, Elliot, is a genius with pasta."

  • "A tasting menu with wine pairing is a nice way to enjoy a meal without too much thought. The reasonable price for both made this a very nice experience overall. The food was tasty. The options were there to satisfy different tastes of the diners. The service was great, without a rushed feeling at all. My only wish was that the server would have spent a bit more time explaining each course and its wine."

  • "We booked this reservation to celebrate a birthday on Thursday night. The tasting menu for the week was great. We like the fact you have an option for each course and the optional wine pairing makes it easy for a group. Every course was great and tasty. Service was great and personable. The corn ravioli was my favorite offering this week. Dessert options were really good. Carmel sundae was a favorite at the table. We will coming back. A great outing with good surprises to eat and keeping this in mind for a night out in the future!"

  • "G is known as a sandwich shop, but also is a very good organized menu in the evenings--consisting of appetizer, pasta, fish or meat, and dessert--all for $40. On this evening we had a really nice roasted corn ravioli and striped bass--generous portions. And dessert was also great--but so was the appetizer, consisting of about 6 different things--antipasto style. Wine list is excellent."

  • "The concept of a sandwich shop becoming a tasting menu restaurant at night might put some people off. Don't let it! The food and wine pairings were delicious. I think the corn ravioli was the best that I have ever eaten."

  • "Very clever use of the daytime sandwich shop and a fitting companion to Kapnos. Excellent food and great wine pairings which I would highly recommend. Can't wait to go back. "

  • "We loved every bite of this experience. The food was innovative and plenty, not to mention very reasonably priced. It was a dining adventure and I can't stop raving about it. I would not have picked pork cheek or pasta with snail ragu off a menu ordinarily, but the tasting menu allowed me to sample some extraordinary bites. It was not very crowded (but should have been), so should not be difficult to get a table and try this out for yourself. I was also under a bit of a time crunch, and the staff did everything possible to accommodate us. But I would have enjoyed lingering longer over this meal. "

  • "Great food and excellent service. Yes, you do need to bring a pillow if you can't abide hard bench seats that service the daytime sandwich shop, but great evening dining adventure and wine pairing at a very reasonable price. We'll go back soon!"

  • "We tried everything on the menu that night between us and every single dish was delicious, seasonal, and creative. The wine pairing went well with food. Excellent pace of meal despite a busy Sat. night and very good wait staff rounded out a wonderful meal. "

  • "Made 930PM dinner reservations for five. Table not ready - finally sat us at a four top table and pulled up a chair after complaining to the hostess. Drink service was slow. First choice in wine was "sold out". First course was slow coming out of the kitchen. They did not have enough of the second course meals for our party. At 11PM, I had to go find the waitress to see when our second course was coming out of the kitchen. Asked for the check at the same time. They knocked $50 off the bill which was a nice gesture but doesn't make up for all the issues we had. Avoid this place until they figure out how to run a restaurant. It's too bad too as the food we did get was actually pretty good."

  • "Although this place is more known for it's sandwiches (which I have yet to try), I had a Gilt City voucher for their 5 course tasting menu and a bottle of prosecco. The ambience has very casual decor, but that doesn't distract from delicious upscale food. Added bonus was the wonderful service...I can't remember the waiter's name, but he did a great job with being friendly, keeping both wine and water glasses full, and timing the courses well."
