We live over 90 minutes from this restaurant and only get there a couple of times a year, but it is our favorite among all the outstanding northern Michigan restaurants. I love the veal saltimbocca so much that I have a hard time ordering anything else. This time it was wonderful all over again. My wife does more sampling than I do but always loves her choice whatever it is. The ambiance is "humble but classy" and the service is always personal, appropriately friendly, and spot-on efficient. Again--this is our favorite.

The tiramisu was the best I've ever had. The entrees were fine except one. We ordered the pasta without mint and, you guessed it, it came with mint. Service was mediocre. Reaching across the table to pour wine, removing plates while someone was still eating, slow to refill water, no followup after entree delivery to see if all was OK, etc. This was our first visit. Doubt we will be back.

Our group of 4 thoroughly enjoyed an early (6:30) dinner on a rainy Monday evening. We began by sharing mussels, lobster ravioli and proscuito-wrapped asparagus. The flavor and presentation of each was very good, and the portion sizes were just right. Entrees of veal saltimboca, spaghetti and meatballs, veal and artichoke and lasagna followed, accompanied by a nice and very reasonably priced bottle of Amarone della Valpolicella. The artichoke could have been better and the balance of cheese and meat in the lasagna favored the cheeses a little too much, but overall we were very satisfied. The tiramasu was excellent, the special lemon tart was very good. A comfortable, inviting atmosphere with fine service.

We just happened upon Funistrada by accident because you have to admit it is "off the beaten path". It is now a definite up north dinner stop each time we are there. The food is delicious whether you order off the board specials or the standard menu and the ambience and quaintness of the restaurant all make for a wonderful dining experience.

Funistrada came highly recommended, so we gave it a try. A house converted into a cozy italian theme roadside restaurant. Decor and ambience are inviting and warm. The staff are extremely friendly and knowledgeable (menu, wines, etc). We tried the Lasagna Bolognese and Veal Chop. The Lasagne was very good, rich and rewarded with cheeses. The Veal chop was a little disappointing, as it was very fatty and tough. Next time, I will order a pasta, as I feel that is what they are known for and do best. Many other tables had Pasta entrees on them as well. Wine markup is very fair, and there are an abundance of excellent Italian reds.

Really enjoyed our dinner - we ordered from the evening specials menu and were very pleased with quality and quantity of our meals. We ordered the special dessert (apple tart with ice cream) to go. Took it home, opened it up to find the smallest piece of apple tart we had ever seen and one small scoop of ice cream! All this for $8! We were a bit disappointed to say the least since our meal portions were so generous! Other than the dessert issue, we really enjoyed this restaurant.

Funistrada is upscale casual, which means the food is world class but the atmosphere and service make you feel like you're dining in a friend's home! I really appreciate the focus on local ingredients and cooking from scratch. You can find a wine bargain or a special bottle if you're so inclined. Things not to miss: anniversary chicken (chicken piccata with prosciutto wrapped asparagus), eggplant parmesan (as big as your head), lobster ravioli and tortellini with smoked duck. Great selection from apps to steaks and if you have room, fresh homemade desserts like pumpkin cheesecake with salted caramel sauce. Hey, you can always get it to go!

This is the second time we were here. What makes this restaurant a good find is that it is small in size and the food and wine is always good. Both times our waitresses were knowledgeable about the food and wine selection. Only drawback is that it is difficult to get a reservation. More so during peek time. I would definitely return.

We were staying in the Empire, MI area and Funistrada came up during a review of where to eat on a Sunday evening. Tucked away in the small village of Glen Arbor, you could almost miss it, but we're glad we gave it a try, it was just a short drive away and the experience was great. It was busy, surprising for a Sunday evening post season. We were greeted warmly, they have a very varied wine list and their menu offerings made for a difficult selection ... we wanted to try them all. We settled for the duck and veal, both were excellently prepared. The ambiance was excellent ... a wonderful dining experience in a small, local restaurant ... bravo!

We were introducing another couple touting past successes. It was great being able to walk in and our reserved table ready. The server was friendly and prompt but the experience was down hill from there. Both of our wives had the Salmon Piccata, which was over cooked. I had the veal Piccata, which was tough and may have been due to being over cooked as well. The fourth person had the Eggplant Parmesan, which was one of the specials and who stated that it was very good. All four of us stated that the side pasta was cold. House salad seemed to only have only oil. Now, shame on us for not bringing this to the attention of the server.
