  • "This is truly a neighborhood gem--the food is seasonal, prepared to order, impeccably done, and served in a, edited, casual and friendly atmosphere. The wine list is unusual and works very well with the food. The menu rotates seasonally, and there is always something exciting and unexpected. This is a place you can come and have a great meal at the counter--even good for one if you just stop in. We have become devoted regulars and everyone we introduce to this restaurant love it. (Best kept secret: fantastic catered lunches also--and they will deliver locally!) Highly recommend!!!!"

  • "We enjoyed the food options on the seasonal dinner menu and everything our party of four had was delicious; however, serving sizes were tiny considering the server told us the dishes were served 'family style.' Many rules kept us from fully enjoying the entire dining experience. Certain wines were closed, literally, once the happy hour was over. Why wouldn't a restaurant want to make money serving wine to a diner, even for a more expensive price, even if it's after a certain time on the clock? We all opted for water after that. The server himself was pretentious to our questions and seemed annoyed that we didn't 'get it.' No salt/pepper on the table means the chefs don't want anyone self-seasoning."

  • "I only hesitate to review because we want to keep out neighborhood oasis available. But it really isn't to be missed. Creative menu, super service (some of the nicest people in the business!) a fun way of eating (shared plates with paired wines). I was going to say stay with the fish (bass in particular) but my husband has had the duck and the pork and raved. Sufficient vegetarian options. My only negatives which won't impact your experience: I still don't understand the tagliatelle with the octopus (feels like about 3 different dishes on one plate). The desserts are minimal and pale compared to the meal but I guess people need the sweet at the end. Madeira flight seems to make it all worthwhile though. Go. Enjoy."

  • "Practically hidden, this quiet little spot for a first date, casual business dinner, or just a weekday treat is a wonderful find. In the farm-to-table style, this restaurant exceeds expectations and does so with a flair. As an SF foodie, I was impressed to enjoy the warm beet salad, and certainly the delicious brussel sprouts. The duck breast dish was a little skimpy on the portions, but tasty nonetheless. The carrot risotto was also to die for. And an impressive staff knowledgeable of their wines was able to let us sample a few before we selected - kudos to our friendly waitress, a smart move that encourages us to keep on drinking!"

  • "Apparently the new trend in "artisian bistro gourmet" or whatever is to oversalt the food until it's nearly inedible. And then charge a premium for it. The sea bass tasted like salty cardboard. The carrot risotto tasted like salty baby food. The beets were unsalted, hooray! But ironically they were so overcooked that what they really needed was just a little salt. And then the bill came and our stomach-unsettling meal of salt with an assortment of sides was about $50 per person. Plastic chairs, crowded tables that you have to squeeze through, no table cloths. Overall, I think the manager and cooks are failing to capture the 'fundamentals' of operating a restaurant."

  • "When we arrived, we checked in with the hostess. She said okay and then didn't give us or other groups any instruction. I finally had to ask her if we should wait here for a while. We ended up waiting about 10 minutes for our table to clear out. Our waitress was okay, but our bus boy and servers were great. We ordered several plates and shared. We ordered two dishes too many. beets & burrata 5 (classic) crispy pee wee potatoes 5 (great dipping sauce) liver jar 2 (not enough flavor and served with too much bread) Asian seafood pizza 3 (too salty) scotish salmon 5 (cooked perfectly and great accompaniments) prok tenderloin 4 (very tender) short rib stew 2 (too salty and more of a broth with rib in it) churros with butterscotch 5"

  • "The 3 of us had dinner and went with the tasting menu ($35 for 3 courses + dessert) so we got to taste a lot of different dishes. Everything was DELICIOUS! Favorites included the pee wee potatos, charred octopus, brussel sprouts, carrot risotto and duck. Staff was super-friendly. New neighborhood favorite!"

  • "We were sat nearly 40 minutes after our reservation and the restaurant was pretty unapologetic. The restaurant did not even comp a drink or appetizer while we waited. The food was a tad on the salty side. The gnocchi was odd, and the short rib stew was not a stew, but shortib surrounded by broth. My friend and I were on the fence about ever coming back. The broccolini and cheese plate were lovely, but the rest of our entrees were mediocre. The sound level was pretty loud and it was difficult to hear the server let alone hear my friend. Some of the other patrons commented on the noise and saltiness of the food. Not sure whether it is worth giving it a second try."

  • "The food is excellent and is you would think this was food being prepared and served at the top end five star restaurants. The room is small so all the tables are quite close together which makes the dining experience "intimate" or "cozy" with ALL the diners. As long as you are comfortable with this, then you can't get this quality food for the same reasonable prices anywhere else."

  • "I have eaten here several times, and the food is always excellent. They have creative seasonal small plates and a nicely curated wine and beer list. It's a little more expensive than I would prefer, so I reserve it for special occasion meals or restaurant week, during which it has a great reasonably priced tasting menu. In addition to the food, the service has always been very good. It's a small, minimalist space with an open kitchen so you can watch the chefs prepare your food, especially if you are seated at the bar. However, this makes for a dining experience that is a little bit noisy and also fairly hot. If you don't mind this, it's a great place to eat a special meal. Definitely one of the best restaurants in Westwood."

  • "This is one of my favorite restaurants in Westwood. The food is amazing and everyone is generally friendly. However, this is the first time I've ever been asked to leave a restaurant because my party was there for too long. It wasn't as if we were done eating and just sitting or chatting. One of the girls was working slowly on her food. When we were about to receive dessert, the waitress kindly told us she had to wrap it up for us because there was a line of people waiting for tables. It was a difficult situation, but I left the restaurant pretty peeved."

  • "This was our first time dining at Fundamental and we will definitely be returning soon. The staff is helpful and gracious. The dishes are delicious works of art produced by a kitchen with clear talent and attention to detail. Favorites included the gnocchi and the beet and buratta salad. The churros for desert were the best we ever had."

  • "We ordered the chicken torta, 2 braised portabello mushroom sandwiches, and the brisket sandwich with vanilla cream soda. We all loved our meal here. My brother tried half of my portabello sandwich because eating an entire plate of sandwiches in one sitting is difficult for someone of my small stature, and he loved how the varying flavors all came together. My mom and I concur with him. The creamy avocado, chewy mushrooms, spicy jalapenos, and rich-saltiness of the miso tahini dressing kick your tastebuds with a jam. The frisee adds the needed freshness to the overall sandwich. My dad thoroughly savored the chicken torta, and my brother found the brisket sandwich to be delicious as well. The bread complements the savory ingredients well."

  • "I had read complaints about the noise level in other reviews but figured it was like so many popular restaurants nowadays. Not so. This place was louder than anywhere and you could clearly hear every word of the conversations of people who weren't even sitting close. That was unfortunate because the food was excellent and the location is very convenient."

  • "It was delicious, laid back, fun, and exactly what we were looking for!! It's meant to be family-style, which we all love since we all tend to get a serious case of entree-envy!! Between the seven of us, we got to try almost the entire menu and every dish was a hit! Stand-outs include: the smoked fish dip, short ribs, chicken torta, fried chicken, and churros, but really everything was awesome. Atmosphere is perfect - lively but not loud - can easily have a normal-volume convo with no problem. Service is friendly and quick! The owner and his staff have created a true neighborhood gem that works well whether you're looking to bring a date, a group of buddies, or just have a regular dinner spot in the neighborhood."

  • "Went with a party of six. We were a mixed bag of tastes, palates and dining expectations. We all loved it. Despite waitress insisting portions were small and we should all get the $35 taster, we each went our own way with an app, 1-2 beers and a main and were good to go. Great food! Good vibe. Go during the week to avoid a packed house. Will def be going back and potentially inquiring about renting it out for events."

  • "Well executed and tasty food. The restaurant only had a few other patrons seated for our early dinner, but our server was very difficult to flag down. We ordered only two courses and it took over an hour to get our food. The poor service was difficult to forgive; especially after being overcharged for food that we did not order. We live nearby the restaurant and had hoped to have discovered a neighborhood gem. However, we were very disappointed with our dining experience and we will not be returning to fundamental L.A.."

  • "Ordered was from the tasting menu. "Required" that all in party do so if choosing that option. Barely audible waitress recommended 2-3 dishes/person. Ordered 3 each, expecting "tasting" sizes. As portions arrived, we got full halfway through. Sat by front door, in cold spot under AC. Staff appeared friendly but not genuine. They left empty dishes on our table so as more food came, we had to transfer empty dishes to an empty table next to us. The ambiance is cold, noisy, and uncomfortable, spoiling the experience. We were just in Paris and Provence, ate similar menu items, and Fundamental's food compared well, but the dining experience was far less appealing. Please Add comfort, and warmth--flannel shirted wait staff not enough!"

Fresh ingredients, creatively prepared in dishes that encourage sharing to get as many different tastes as possible.   • "Don't understand the concept or total lack of design. They put in kitchen, tables and went from there. Don't get bringing out food whenever the kitchen decides and not when the customer wants it. I don't like my sides before my entree. The fish we ordered was literally 1 and 1/2 bites and cost $15 . That is an outrage. The fruit salad was all greens with a tiny bit of peaches. I hate that they charged for the bread and then grilled it as if it was possibly stale. They are trying to keep food costs down at the expense of the customer by loading up on greens everywhere and skimping on the main ingredient. My advice- skip this restaurant."

  • "It was really warm inside-The employees were fanning themselves. The play list was an odd mix from the 80's. The red wine was way too warm and came from yesterday. The food was way too salty. They should just put salt licks blocks on the table. The beet and burrata salad was the second best dish of the night and still pretty salty. It was downhill from there. The brisket should have been called corned beef and was on a bed of fries and cheese. The carrot risotto was inedible. Churros to finish was the best dish of the night. Butterscotch sauce was salty. We had a 5course meal in an hour! Not going back. Servers were nice and asked a couple of times if she could bring something else for us. We declined figuring everything would be salty."

  • "The most positive part of our recent experience was the food, which was outstanding: every dish was interesting, well-prepared, and delicious; and the tasting menu is an excellent deal. Everything else, though, was unpleasant: the deafening noise level, the uneven service (it took far too long even to take our drinks order), the skimpy pours for glasses of wine, and -- most annoying of all, when the wait staff pointedly explains that "sharing of food is encouraged" -- the absence of serving utensils, even though dishes are brought to the table for communal consumption. And we resented being told, when we requested more bread for the liver paté, that we would have to place an order for bread and butter ($3+), itself a ridiculous charge."
