Diner Reviews
  • "The service and selection of food and wine parings made for an outstanding dining experience. Each course and paired wine was explained well. The courses were all each very different, flowed well and really hit high marks. The friendliness of the staff and the owner calls for more visits on our part. "

  • "Went on a Tues. night and the place was very quiet. Meal was very good but the entree did not show up for an hour and a half from the time we were seated"

  • "Quiet, intimate dining experience. Food superb, server Autumn was attentive. Seated promptly. Our 1st experience in dining room was memorable. We will return!"

  • "I have been to Fuel several times and while the service has gotten a little better (faster), the food is not for me. They are trying to be French and New York Chic? but it doesn't work as well as it could. There aren't many choices in Lewiston, so I think this is how they get away with it. The food is just drenched in oil. Even the wilted spinach I had was floating in oil. The food is rich and heavy. Just ok."

  • "Our group shared the fondue for four as an appetizer. This was as delicious but there was an excess of bread and not enough cheese. 2 of our us ordered the filet and it was enjoyed immensely by both. Another person had the salmon and said it was incredible. I ordered the hanger steak which came with house made frites and a small salad. The frites at Fuel were in credible ! I can't wait to go back and try bacon dusted! The steak with my meal was tender and juicy but would have benefited from a sauce ( a borderlaise or perhaps a bernaise). The salad which accompanied the meal was lacking in flavor . As always, I ordered a side of their hash made of Brussels sprouts, sweet potato, and bacon whic was amazing as always."

  • "Food was great, prices are a little bit high, but considering its location in Lewiston it is Justified."

  • "Fuel has an ambience of understated elegance, and an excellent wine list. For our 24th anniversary we had a lovely dinner featuring steak au poivre and mushroom-stuffed trout. The trout was beautifully presented, wrapped in locally produced bacon. The steak was cooked to my wife's demand for rare beef, and had the char-broiled outside that she enjoys. It was served with some lovely red new potatoes and a lovely, subtle sauce. We had a carafe of Pinot that was delightful. The quiet atmosphere was a relief, the food excellent, and our waiter Paul worked with us with polite and attentive competence. I would consider this an excellent special-occasion restaurant."

  • "We have been fans of Fuel since its inception, and our dinner last Friday night was the first time that we have had any issues at all with the quality of the food (or any issues at all). I had the pork belly and it was overdone, oversalted and not up to the usual standard that we have come to expect from Fuel. The service was superb and I hesitated to mention my problem to the server, as everyone else's meals were fine. Appetizers and deserts were fantastic, but the pork belly was substandard."

  • "We stopped in here for dinner visiting from Denver on a Saturday night. There was no one waiting, 3-4 tables available in the dining area, and bar seating available. Strangely though, we were told we couldn't be seated because we didn't have a reservation. We weren't given the option to wait for a table but were told we could eat in the bar area which was just a long table to sit side by side. I stepped away and found literally every time slot available to book on OpenTable. I grabbed the next slot and let the greeter know. She was nice about it, but I'm not sure why the original holdback except to try and appear exclusive? After being made to wait an appropriate amount of time (I guess) we were seated at one of the empty tables. Funny."

  • "I have eaten at Fuel for a special B-day celebration , we did a food and wine pairing which was out of this world. I wanted to take my husband to see what I had been raving about. I couldn't decide what to drink and our server said I would like the Cosmo, that it was the bartenders special. It certainly was because although the food was out standing by the time I finished my drink I really had to bring my food home! It was even great heated up the next day :) We will certainly go back to Fuel."

  • "Food overall was excellent with the exception of dessert. Normally the desserts are outstanding but the macaroons were a bit too chewy and the chocolate rice pudding was well, rice pudding."

  • "I'd heard Fuel was spectacular and it was! The food was exquisite and the service was the same! It's really that simple.., we adored it!"

  • "Went for restaurant week on recommendation of friend---the limited menu had excellent offerings. The bread is superb! And our server was personable and invested in giving responsive service without being at all intrusive--one of best waitpersons I've had. We will be going back to test the whole menu, which has many delicious-sounding offerings!"

  • "I went to this restaurant the day after Valentine's day and the food was not what I expected. I went because my co-workers were saying how amazing it was so I figured I would give it a try. I got the filet mignon and it was chewy and just tasted like any other piece of steak. For the price that I was paying, I expected it to be a lot better than it was."

  • "I have been trying to take my friends to Fuel for awhile, as I have been filling them in on the great atmosphere and food. Finally, on a snowy evening this past Tuesday, we got together and my friends agreed, it was everything I said it would be. I had the scallops, garnished with slivers of cauliflower and radishes. The flavor was subtle but memorable. Scallops were cooked perfectly. My firend Billy, who travels for his career, said the Steak au Poivre rivaled any of the top steak houses he has been to. We had a great dessert, fabulous Fuel Cosmos, and closed the restaurant...sorry to the workers who had to get home, but there were others there as well."

  • "Another wonderful dinner at Fuel - we are so lucky to have it here in Lewiston. We have now tried almost everything on the menu and the execution and presentation are always spot on. My husband is a huge fan of the lamb (maybe one reason why we seem to go there on Saturdays a lot) - this may sound boring, but I am a huge fan of their steaks. The filet was perfection."

  • "My partner and I had a "split" experience--parking was difficult because of the snow, service was very good, two salads were ok, his entree was outstanding, (lamb shank) mine (potato crusted cod) was inedible. So it's a toss up! I have written to Fuel telling this so it will be interesting to see how they respond."

  • "This is my favorite Lewiston restaurant. We brought our daughter this time. My husband and my daughter shared the fondue and loved it. I had the spinach salad and that was delicious. My husband and I had the filet mignon. Our daughter had the coq au Riesling we all enjoyed our entrees and didn't have room for anything else. The service was attentive. The owner stopped by to welcome us and thank us for coming. This is my go to restaurant whenever we have visitors. We have never been disappointed."

  • "Food was good. Braised lamb was done well but soaked in sauce. You never tasted the lamb. The ceasar salad wasn't prepared in the traditional manner. It came out in an individual bowl thrown together by someone out back. Nothing note worthy. Coctails were good size, but the price reflected two drinks. Dessert tasted as if the cake came from a betty crocker package and again covered in choclate sauce from a can. Nothing tasted as if it were from scratch. Seating was nicely spaced from other patrons so you didn't have to listen to their conversation. This is a nice restaraunt, just nothing worth going out of your way for."

  • "Really enjoyed the meal. Nice bottle of red.... delicious fondue for two to start things off... Pink Salmon on cedar plank with side of kale and fingerling potatoes was delicious. ..too full for dessert. Waitress took care of us, was super friendly without any attitude. Will come back soon."

  • "This was our first time to visit Fuel and we had a delightful evening and the food and service were excellent. We recently moved to Maine from Long Island and were delighted to find a restaurant nearby that was comparable to the better restaurants on Long Island."

  • "I decided to treat my husband to a night at the Public Theater and dinner at Fuel as a January winter buster and birthday present. We don't dine out often and were very pleased with the food and the ambiance. It's a very warming space on a chilly night, with its well-lit interior, warm colors, and very hot food (very important )! I recommend this dinner-and-theater evening in Lewiston for a highly enjoyable change of scene."

  • "Stepping into Fuel is like stepping into an elegant wine bistro in any big city, except for the prices (quite reasonable), and the service (genuine, open, friendly, and unpretentious). An excellent wine list, and more wines by the glass than almost any wine bar I've been to. Their fondue-for-two appetizer is a perfect option - just $9.00, very well-made, and just enough for two hungry people to come away quite satisfied. Looking at the wine list, I noticed Chapoutier Bila Haut Cote de Rousillion for just $27.00. That wine retails for $10-12. If this is typical, they mark up their wines much less than typical. Wines by the glass hover in the $7.00 - 8.50 range for a healthy pour - quite a value!"

  • "My husband and I enjoyed a fabulous dinner at Fuel's mid-week last week. From the wine to the salad to the dessert, the food and drink were divine. This was our second evening at Fuel and we will definitely be back. Hope to try the "Chef's Table" where, we understand, the chef makes a dinner especially for the guests and explains the cooking process. Great for "foodies"!"

  • "Let's face it, Lewiston/Auburn while a charming and friendly place is not a food paradise. If you want a well prepared fine-dining meal it's FUEL or well, Fuel. That being said, I do not believe the restaurant cuts corners or takes liberties with their standing as the only real fine-dining in town. The food is generally consistently good and the service friendly and helpful. If you have a child at Bates College book reservations well in advance for times/weekends when a number of families are expected to be in town because they fill up quickly. This is probably going to sound patronizing but it is not meant to--Fuel would hold it's own in urban areas where choices for this sort of dining are more abundant."

  • "Lewiston, Maine is now on the Foodie map thanks to Fuel Restaurant! Very good good ...root beer braised short ribs, nightly specials by the chef, definitely try the lobster mac & cheese! Very good martinis, wonderful wine selection, to micro brewed beers:) A wonderful surprise in Maine (and not in Portland). Magically, PHIL"

  • "Made a reservation for my fiancés birthday. They sat us in our own privacy section. Our waitress was outstanding and personable. The food was amazing the only thing lacking was the dessert. Perfect place for the young power couple, foodie or wino. But get dessert elsewhere. Still I give it a perfect 10!"

  • "We choose The Fuel for special celebrations and our annual New Year's dinner with friends. They never disappoint. The service is extremely professional and yet casual; not an easy combo. The food is always, "have you ever tasted anything like this before?" good. Two small disappointments this time: the fries were cold and they removed our favorite Spanish wine from the list. No complaining though! On balance, it remains one of our absolute favorite restaurants in Maine. And the prices are quite reasonable."

  • "we went to Fuel after a busy day of work and Christmas preparations. It was a totally relaxing experience. The staff takes their time and doesn't rush you to make a decision. For starters, my husband had dusted frittes and I had the spinach salad and we shared them. They were great. We both ordered the Filet Mignon which is grass fed beef. It was delicious. I had mine with their rosemary oven roasted red potatoes and my husband had it with mashed potatoes. we both had the green beans that come with the meal. We ate every bite. We did not have dessert because we were full. This is our go-to restaurant in the area because it is our favorite. They make you feel welcome and they truly appreciate your business."
