  • "This south of Market restaurant has managed to survive the competitive restaurant scene in San Francisco for well over two decades and it deserves its longevity. The very well prepared food tends toward the classically French, so if you're looking for culinary fireworks, this might not be the right spot, but if you want an excellent coq au vin, served in a very pleasant dining room, you won't be disappointed. Price-wise, it's on the upper end of "moderate", but it doesn't disappoint. Upon being asked, our waiter provided a wonderful wine recommendation to accompany a delicious meal."

  • "I came here weekly during much of 2008. I've been away for some time and was concerned that the food and service may have changed in these hard times we share. I also had to make a last minute reservation change, and wasn't sure if they would be able to accommodate us. No problem at all. We came and found the decor had changed little, cozy, intimate, clean. The staff were also as I remember them, kind, yet busy, Frenchmen with nice smiles. My group was new to French cuisine, so we found our waiter's suggestions helpful. And the food was wonderful. Between us we had the chicken, duck, and sea bass, all reasonably priced. The flavors brought me back to France, and I knew I had been away to long, from Paris, but also from Fringale."

  • "I hadn't been to Fringale in many years and it was great to go back. Our waiter was darling and the food outstanding. The only problem was that the noise from the construction on the street outside made it impossible to hear. Luckily the construction workers took their lunch between 12 and 1pm."

  • "Fringale is our favorite neighborhood French bistro. No pretense. The French dishes like cassoulet, onion soup and always another delicate soup, confit de canard, pommes frites(thin french fries) mussels and salads are all delicious. The lamb chops melt in your mouth and the rib steak as well. It is a little weaker on deserts. I wish they would make a fresh fruit tart."

But the food is classic without being in any kind of rut and pushing the outside extremities of delicious.   • "I've walked past this place for years and never paid much attention to it given its relatively small street-facing presence in a largely commercial neighborhood near the Caltrain station. I recently read about it in the Michelin guide and gave it a try for lunch. Boy, was I missing out all these years! The food was delicious and reasonably priced (for that occasional lunch splurge), and the service was pleasant and attentive. I'm glad I arrived for an early lunch because the small but stylish dining area filled up quickly while I was there. I look forward to returning again when I'm in SF."

  • "Everything was delicious! It's a cozy little bistro with great service and fabulous food. My husband and I split a salad to start and it was one of the best I have ever had. Then I had a sea bass dish and it was cooked to perfection - seared and crusty on the outside and tender and moist on the inside. My sons both had chicken which sounds plain but it wasn't! I could go on and on. The waiter and host were friendly and efficient."

  • "I've been a fan of Fringale for the last ten years. I've always had good food and found it to be a pleasant, neighborhood restaurant. Expecting the same experience, I recently brought a business client from Switzerland. As always the food was good. Unfortunately, the service was really poor. Our waiter was rushed and rude. He confused our order, slopped the food on the table and barely spoke to us. He was very condescending about explaining the wine list. We were two women dining together. I don't know if it was our gender, a very snotty waiter or just an off night. Typically Fringale has been very good. Not so on this night."

The evening started out poorly as I had asked for a outside wall table (where the noise level is lower ), none was available without a wait. We were given the only table,next to where servers went back and forth - my guest needed to dine at our reservation time).. If I were not familiar with the outstanding service that the more experienced staff provides, I would have been satisfied with the service - but unfortunately it did not come close to the level I was used to at Fringale and the noise level at the table was unsatisfactory."

  • "We went there for my birthday and had a table reservation - the latter is a mich even on weekdays as Fringale is a rather small place. The waitor was very pleasant and thought ahead by bringing extra plates "just in case we wanted to share the starter/dessert". In short, the ambience was great! Fringale was Michelin recommended in 2012 (or was it 2013?). You can check out the a la carte menu online (the lamb is amazing) and furthermore they have a three-course dinner for $37. The desserts are delicious too."

  • "This is a city restaurant located near the Caltrain station where I, anyway, would not have expected really good food and wine. It's a bit cramped for space, but everyone is friendly so that isn't much of a problem. But not a spot to take someone for an intimate chat! You'll be intimate with the people sitting at the next table, not your date or client. What I liked most about this restaurant was the service. It was very personal. i asked my wait person for advice about the right sort of wine to order with my main dish, and his recommendation turned out to be spot on--with no condescension or anything. Enjoy!"

I think the owner was present while we were there and that, to me, is an indication of how good the restaurant will be. We were a little early for our reservation but we were seated as soon as we arrived. Our waiter was efficient, knowledgeable, and friendly, making the delicious food seem even better. I had the seafood basquaise, which was excellent. My wife ordered the organic roast chicken, which was perfectly cooked and quite delicious also. Although the wine list was not extensive, there were some very interesting choices and they seemed quite reasonably priced. In short, we loved our dinner and everything about Fringale."

  • "Had a large group for dinner. Arrived early, sat at the bar and had friendly service from the bartender and other staff members. All the food we ordered was fantastic. The mussels, calamari, crab tower, prawns, and basquaise were all excellent. Prawn appetizer was my favorite, but everything else was great too. A lot of ppl ordered the braised lamb shank special - it was excellent. The rib eye was also great. Our friend, a baker, brought a couple pies for dessert, and the restaurant was very nice about it - refrigerated the pies during the meal, and cut them for everyone and then served them to us. The staff was also very accommodating with allowing us to pay with a million different cards and cash. All in all, a very pleasant experience."
