A word from Fringale
Fringale, which means "the urge to eat," has been a major contributor to San Francisco's South of Market culinary renaissance. From its opening fourteen years ago, it has remained a favorite dining spot for food lovers, socialites, politicians, artists, celebrities, and journalists. The restaurant's sponged eggshell colored walls, blond wooden chairs, sand and earth toned banquettes and wainscoting, and verdigris bartop create a dining environment that is sophisticated, intimate, and inviting. Fringale is a place where guests can drop in for a glass of wine and snack at the bar or enjoy a tantalizing classic French bistro meal prepared by one of the finest kitchens in San Francisco. Come and experience why Fringale has been consistently rated one of the top French restaurants in San Francisco since its opening.Continued

  • "San Francisco has a great streak of fine French dining opportunities but this place has moved to the top of our choices. Very friendly, ith excellent service and great food and wine selections. The Adelsheim Pinot Noir was fantastic and in unavailable by retail anywhere. We find this a consistently excellent dining event. It's packed but still quiet enough to carry on a conversation, unlike some others."

  • "I've eaten here a few times, first because it was convenient to the Bay Bridge and where relatives live in SOMA, subsequently because it's such a pleasure. I've had a romantic dinner here with my husband, a couple of fun meals with my son and early supper with a friend. Always, the food has ranged from very good to superb (fantastic prawns in tomato-tarragon coulis; coq au vin to die) and the service warm and attentive. Just entering the place -- cozy, lovely art on the walls, you feel comfortable and cared for. No pretense, just elegant service and reliably delicious food."

  • "I love this restaurant. The food is exceptional, and it has the nicest , low key, yet attentive and professional wait staff. I have been here several times, and am never disappointed. Without directly being told , the waiter figured out that three of four of us were having birthdays, and brought out desserts with candles at the end. Really lovely wine list. Apparently , the veal short ribs got the highest marks the evening we were there,"

  • "Work in the area and took an overseas university student to lunch the day before his return to Korea. Lunch and service were absolutely wonderful. The waiter was very friendly and efficient and made us very comfy the entire time we were there. I had previously avoided lunching at Fringale fearing it might be either too pricey or too pretentious but it was neither and I will certainly return there again!"

  • "Fringale is always excellent in every aspect of our dining experience from service, presentation, quality of the food, and friendliness and helpfulness of the staff."

  • "My wife and I decided to have blind faith in Yelp's #1 SOMA restaurant rating. It paid off. We enjoyed a perfect dining experience. The calamari 'a la plancha' was the best I've ever had. Service is impeccable. The restaurant is 'cozy', but conversation doesn't require amplification. Fringale will continue to be part of our theater-going jaunts into the city."

  • "I took my relative here for dinner. We are both vegetarian and do not drink alcohol and we have a lovely meal. We loved the food, ambiance, service and enjoyed our slow pace. We took more than 2 hours for dinner and never felt rushed. This is a lovely restaurant with very nice staff. I highly recommend it and look forward to my next meal here."

  • "Fringale is a lovely little oasis on busy 4th and Brannan. Pleasant decor, unhurried but attentive, impeccable service and excellent food. My friend and I had beautiful fresh salads, a wild salmon over delicious vegetables with a tomato coulis, and a pork tenderloin with apples and cabbages; everything was delicious. We went early so the restaurant was quiet; when full I'd say moderate, but because it's a bistro with close seating it depends on the volume of fellow diners."

  • "Fringale's food and service was amazing! We had DINE ABOUT TOWN and we loved everything on the menu..especially the calamari. I will definitely come back and try to full menu. YUMMMM!"

  • "The welcome would be described as subdued. While the staff gets you off to a slow start, the drinks were excellent and the food was even better. By the end of the meal, the staff had shrugged off their sober demeanor and livened up. Great meal before taking in the Giants game at AT&T park which is only 4 blocks away."

  • "The bacon-wrapped pork was good and we loved the crème brule. Just give it a try. This place is small but cozy and not too loud."

  • "We have been eating at Fringale for more than 20 years. It is always consistently great with delicious food and friendly service. They have a wide variety of choices, well prepared and good size portions. Their martinis are wonderful and they have olives stuffed with blue cheese which are unique and yummy. Good wine list, well priced and generous pour."

  • "We have been dining at Fringale, literally since the restaurant opened, and it is a treat every time. The restaurant is warm and lively, the service impeccable and the food delicious. Excellent food, good value, and a wonderful dining experience!"

  • "What a great find during Dine About Town week. We will make Fringale our "go-to" place in San Francisco. The food was wonderful, creative and beautifully presented. The service was impeccable. The ambiance was warm, friendly, comfortable, charming. Fringale is better than the best French bistros in Paris in my experience. "

  • "I've enjoyed Fringale a number of times over the last 12 plus years. The Pork Tenderloin was delicious, serviced on a bed of cabbage, lightly covered with a very flavorful tapanade. The seafood basquaise was good with the fish, shrimp and mussels tasting fresh with the sauce complementing the dish not overpowering the fish. The portion was a tad small and the mussels seemed a little dry (meat stuck to both sides of the shell) or over cooked-not as plump as I prefer. The noise level was comfortable. Wine list pricing is fair but limited on selection. I will return "

  • "friendly staff, nice ambiance, food was fair ok, price was over priced compared to Chez Mama and Isa (they are cheaper and food are good to awesome upon the dishes you order). Seafood dishes was plenty plain according to my friends. Chicken, pork, desserts, appertizers (Ravioli, squid, salad) were average compared to other restaurants. If you live close by, you can go there. But by the price and the food quality, I can go Chez Mama, Isa, Chou Chou, Chez Papa for better food and cheaper price."

  • "We started with carpaccio and the butter lettuce salad. Our entrees were lamb and pork tenderloin, along with glasses of red wine. We finished our meal with the almond torte. Everything was incredible, and we look forward to returning again soon."

  • "It feels like you took a step into a little restaurant in Paris with better service. My wife loved her lamb chops, I did not like my seafood bisq. I should remember the French do not use hot spices pretty blend. it is a very romantic spot. The neighborhood sure has changed over the years making it very trendy. Some of the dishes looked very good like the ribeye steak. The wine selection was good. Nice place for a date especially if you are lucky enough to get a window table....enjoy"

  • "The food and the service were both outstanding. The shrimp in pastis sauce as a starter was so delicious that I looked online for the recipe the next day! Also delicious were the seabass in piperade and tapenade and the vegetarian couscous dish. I can't wait to go back!"

  • "Fringale has earned classic status in San Francisco. I first went in early 90s soon after it opened—when it was one of the few restaurants in SOMA—and it was excellent. Now, with many good restaurants in the general area vying for your attention, this is still a safe bet for wonderful food and great service in a cozy yet energetic room. My date absolutely loved her duck, and my rack of lamb was perfect. I hope it stays just the way it is for years to come."

  • "As a longtime San Francisco resident, I'm shocked at myself for never having been to Fringale before. We went for a special occasion dinner, and could not have hoped for more. The food was amazing, the wait staff was lovely, the atmosphere was warm and festive. Thank you, Fringale."

  • "Fringale rarely fails to please, with excellent food and warm, efficient service. There's a full bar and a good wine list. We went the night before Mother's Day, had a great dinner, including a favorite appetizer (ravioli filled with roquefort and spinach), a daily special (duck breast maigret) and a favorite dessert (lemon, pear and apple sherbet trio), plus scallops in potato "purses" and veal short ribs. Everything was well-prepared and served by one of our favorite waiters. The clientele turns over from older diners to younger ones about 9:00 p.m. The restaurant is lively and busy; you feel you're in one of San Francisco's special places--and we've been coming here more than 20 years! • "Had not been there since the new ownership has take over, and not nearly as good as before. I had veal short ribs, that were entirely fat with very little meat. My wife had mussels which is one of her favorite meals, and were not very flavorful. My friends wife had a pork loin wrapped in bacon, and the bacon flavor overwhelmed the taste of the pork, and she was not able to finish it. Overall, it was not a great experience. We're people that don't complain, but we won't be going back anytime soon"

  • "I would rather go to a neighborhood restaurant without pretense and eat well prepared food. I ordered the seafood plate which had about six mussels, a couple of shrimp, and square pieces of fish, all of which tasted like the doctored catsup sauce they were drowning in. When I told the waiter that two of the mussels tasted bad, he told me those must have been the male mussels that always taste bad! Mon dieu, if that's the case, please serve only female mussels, if such a thing exists, or none at all. Merci Je ne reviendrais pas. "

  • "I want to order my way through the menu, but I can't let go of the wonderful lamb chops with their subtle sauce and potatoes au gratin. Even the slender string beans, al dente, were deliciously unadorned. The same goes for the Gateau Basque. My wife had the sorbets - they were fruity and great for dessert. I started with the calamari, just spicy, and a taste of her salad with nuts and goat cheese. The waiter was excellent and our bottle of Russian River Pinot Noir was not priced over the moon. All beyond good, all excellent as always. And short walking distance. Lucky us."

  • "The food was delicious. I had the duck and my wife had the lamb chops. Initially I went there for the cassoulet, but they didn't have it as it's dish that they only prepare at certain times during the year. Apparently winter, as it's a winter dish. Nevertheless, I was really disappointed with them not having it. But the rest of the food was great and the staff is very warm and friendly. "

  • "Ended up being a very busy night which contributed too lower service than we would have preferred. That said, they understood and provided complimentary champagne for our inconvenience. Great French Brassierre reminiscent of our travels to Paris. "

  • "Booked reservation at this restaurant that my wife and I had dined at in 1998. Was crazy difficult to get reservation then but food was terrific! Return engagement years later was just as good. Food was prepared well, dining staff was very attentive making a very satisfying evening out for my family and friend. Would highly recommend this restaurant! San Francisco is a great restaurant city because places like Fringale put out fantastic food year after year!"

  • "We had lunch there this week.It was very crowded so make your reservation. The winelist is terrific. Service is a bit slow maybe because it was so crowded but I would recommend this as a local lunch place with as lot flair somewhat French like. I have not been there for dinner it might be great."
