A word from Fresh Salt
Our tables overlook the waters of the Connecticut River where the fresh river meets the salt of the sound. It’s a treasured and historic spot. In nature the most vibrant life happens where systems meet. These places are rich in life, and our restaurant reflects that lively diversity. We have a raw bar, a seasonally varied menu, and offer as much as we can from the farms, brewers, cheese makes and other food enterprises that are springing up around our region.

Fresh Salt delivers a dining experience that’s comfortable and relaxed. Our staff is here to be of service to you, our kitchen stands ready with fresh ingredients, a deep wine cellar and carefully crafted fusions of foods and beverages that bring tastes together in delicious and new ways.

We have tables by the fire, at the bar, and in season offer seating outdoors on the Fresh Salt Terrace.

Diner Reviews
  • "We were there for our fifth wedding anniversary and stayed at the hotel. What a nice surprise to find such a fabulous restaurant at the hotel. The tuna tartare was absolutely amazing and my swordfish and lobster risotto were jammed with large pieces of lobster and perfectly prepared."

  • "Arriving late, 8:45, we were delighted with the total experience! Would recommend it to anyone!"

  • "Rather lonely inside on this lovely Thursday afternoon, but patio was busy and noisy. Prompt and courteous service. The men raved about their burgers and the gals devoured Maine lobster salad rolls (please next time a salad fork!). Fresh Salt generally does not disappoint!"

  • "We brought friends from Florida who were entranced by the view and really happy about the weather. Special cocktails were enjoyed by all. Soups great as usual. And we could not resist the calamari (yet again). Our attentive waitress let us enjoy our evening. Couldn't be beat."

  • "The ambiance is nautical, casual. The menu has an emphasis on seafood, but other types of food are available. We'll come back which is an endorsement in my book."

  • "This place is a wedding factory, but their restaurant and food are great and service OK too. There are 2 bars, one outside with a great firepit to sit around. Swordfish was perfect, wine list is very limited, but not too expensive. Great atmosphere being in a nice marina, with great views of boats and Long Island Sound. It's definitely a happenin place."

  • "The seafood here is very fresh, but our oysters arrived without having been properly shucked -- still attached to the abductor muscle. When we pointed this out to the staff, they didn't seem to know what we were talking about. Preparation and presentation of our main courses was old-fashioned and not particularly tasty or appealing. We won't return."

  • "We arrived almost 1 hour early for our 6:00 p.m. reservation on a Saturday night, but were seated with no waiting. Hostess, bus and wait staff were friendly and efficient. The food was excellent. We will definitely return in the future."

  • "... on one of the 10 best days of summer! Even during mid-afternoon, we had a short wait for a table. Fresh Salt is a great spot to linger outside on their patio, but not get scorched by the sun. The food is so fresh, and so good. It's worth the hour drive for such a great view!"

  • "While vacationing in the area, we had dinner at Fresh Salt at the recommendation of my brother and his wife. The food was outstanding: my swordfish was amazing, and my husbands lobster roll was delicious! The NE Clam chowder was the best we ever had. Even the bread they served before dinner, which was warm and crusty, was terrific. The colossal shrimp cocktail (3.95 per shrimp) was a little tough; this was the only meal item that i wouldn't call perfect. The service was top notch, and the view of the marina is beautiful. The one slightly negative comment: the interior restaurant decor and ambiance didn't wow me and made me wish we were sitting outdoors."

  • "We showed up just as the restaurant was opening for dinner, so the place was empty. Our appetizers and my daughter's meal came out pretty quickly, but things went downhill from there. The food was pretty bland; the tuna sushi had tons of rice that was the consistency of mashed potatoes. Then we waited, and waited and waited. Finally, we found the waitress and she checked and apologized, saying there was a problem with the "ticket machine" in the kitchen. Finally got our so-so meals, ordered a cookie for my daughter's dessert. Instead of the $2 cookie, she was given a $6 kids milk and cookie special for some reason. You would think that would have been comped for our troubles, but nothing. Management didn't seem to care either."

  • "I reserved a table through OPEN TABLE. When I got to the restaurant, they told me that they do not take outside reservations. I think this is something that should be communicated through OPEN TABLE, if its service is to take reservations, then they should inform the customer that they don't take reservations for outside."

  • "After being married at Saybrook Point Inn last year, my wife and I went back to celebrate our first anniversary this past weekend! The entire staff (especially Joe and Donna) were absolutely amazing!! Top notch, second to none, there's not enough we can say about the restaurant, the facility, or the staff!"

  • "We had a reservation, but they gave our table to walk-ins who arrived while we waited to be seated. When we were finally seated (after 20 minutes), we waited another 15 minutes to place our order (thankfully, we already had drinks). Our meal was served an hour after we were seated; a full 90 minutes after our scheduled reservation time. We were very disappointed."

  • "Four of us enjoyed a late lunch together on a beautiful day in mid-August. When making a reservation, I'd requested outdoor dining, and was gratified that it was a beautiful day, although a canopy would have sheltered us even on a rainy day. Two had the soft-shelled crab BLT and enjoyed it; another had the chopped salad and said it was fresh, and I had delicious wild salmon. The service was great! The next time I return, I'll take a suitcase for the weekend!"

  • "Lots of great seafood choices. A bit pricey but the quality of the food is top notch ."

  • "Our dinner at Fresh Salt was good. The service was quite slow, but the waitress was very friendly and accommodating and didn't seem bothered at all by the presence of our two children. The food was very good."

  • "When in the area, do try Fresh Salt. We had dinner and breakfast there recently, and both were first rate. The dinners did not disappoint- excellently prepared fresh food, great choices and range, just right portions. Diners seemed friendly, similarly enjoying a casual but elegant evening. While kid friendly, please respect its a classy meal, not for crying and whining. Breakfast was also delicious but we experienced the crying tot, can't avoid it in a smallish area. Midweek was lovely- not overly crowded, whereas weekends are supposed to be crazy busy. Worth the drive... we'll go back."

  • "Although highly rated, the staff appeared overwhelmed and frenetic to serve the diners--the place was nearly full on a Mon. There was a long wait to have orders taken. Waitperson was bizarre and frenzied. It was an uncomfortable and unpleasant experience."

  • "Great restaurant , excellent service, beautiful scenic view"

  • "Outside of great shrimp and beautiful view it was a disappointment. Mashed potato scold, scallops gritty, no presentation whatsoever on dish. Swordfish mushy, artichoke hearts steamed to oblivion no taste. Service lackluster."

  • "Brought my two daughters for a nice lunch. Food was great, loved the sushi triangles! The outside experience/view could be so much more if the patio area were a little larger space and more spread out. Sort of felt like a tight squeeze between tables."

  • "This was not our first time at Fresh Salt, but it was our best. The views are always great and the food was better than before. The lobster roll was the best I have ever had. Service was great."

  • "We stayed at the Inn for two nights and ate both nights at the restaurant. Great outdoor seating. First night out server was great! I had the seafood Paella - don't recommend it. My husband had the seafood capellini - great! Second night - server was not great. But good was amazing! Sushi triangles. The burger and fries are ridiculously good!! And the farm salad and New England clam chowder - fantastic. We did the Sunday brunch too - unless you're going to eat a ton it's pricey and no alcohol included."

  • "We loved the food, the atmosphere and the staff! Next year our niece is getting married here and we are thrilled. We had a great experience and can't wait to return! We had been given a gift certificate from our son for our anniversary (32 years) and will return with friends. My husband had paella and I had the fresh sea bass. For an app. we had the tuna tartar and everything was cooked to perfection! Thank you for making our anniversary memorable (like it should be)!"

  • "Overall, the brunch was very good, but pricey at $35. Their were egg and pasta stations and a nice variety of meats, salads, breads, and desserts. I wasn't very impressed with the service."
    Dined on 7/20/2014
  • "We were surprised to be sitting in the bar area. It was quite noisy. The service was adequate, but we poured our own wine after the first serving and little attention was paid to us other than the obligatory service. The wait staff and management seemed focused on a wedding that was going on outside."
    Dined on 7/18/2014
  • "The table location ruined the experience: at juncture of door to restaurant, walkway to the outside bar and the wait staff bussing station. This table at this location shouldn't exist! There was constant traffic. I would have gladly waited another half hour for a better table."

  • "We had a voucher for brunch for two so we decided to try Fresh Salt for brunch We have been there numerous times for dinner and holiday events. Omelets were prepared at a station and were superb. Numerous pastries and other brunch specials were flavorful. Salads were good with lots of variety. Especially enjoyed the crepes for dessert. Overall a great experience."

  • "Super brunch (oh, the food!) ... with a super view! It's definitely one of the best ways to spend ... just be sure to arrive hungry!"

  • "We all enjoyed our meals on Saturday evening. The fish was fresh and tasty. Three of us had the special and it was done very well...our daily catch served in a minestrone type sauce. My husband enjoyed his paella quite a lot...nice fish selection and moist rice, not overdone. We look forward to returning again soon. Lovely spot on the water!"

  • "We arrived mid afternoon, had to wait for a table, were seated in the sun on a hot day, much too much noise coming from adjacent table, food over rated, swordfish over cooked, not juicy lobster grilled cheese ok."

  • "Fresh Salt is one of our favorite Old Saybrook restaurants. The seasonal changes to the menu always bring some new taste treats. This summer there are several English pea creations. The fresh pea ravioli was wonderful. We also had the Rhode Island calamari for the second time. ENJOY!"

  • "This is my 2 nd time going to Fresh Salt. I wanted to take my son daughter in law and my daughter who came home for the long weekend We all enjoyed the brunch and scenic view. My family was very happy about the outdoor dining and the view. We will go back again."

  • "We had a lovely table outside overlooking the marina. Food and service were both excellent. Would definitely go back."

  • "The restaurant was noisier than it had been at a previous visit. Service was excellent. There were 2 of us and one meal was excellent and the other mediocre. Drinks were good."
    Dined on 7/5/2014
  • "Very disappointed! Both the food and service left a lot to be desired. Ordered English pea risotto and it was very gloppy, not creamy. Lobster Roll was good, but New England Clam Chowder was very average at best. On top of that it took almost an hour to get served. Our waiter was excellent, with numerous apologies, but apparently things were very slow in the kitchen. On a beautiful day on the 4th of July weekend, they should have known they were going to be busy and should have been prepared for it."
    Dined on 7/5/2014
  • "This was my third birthday dinner at Fresh Salt (which is during the Fourth of July holiday week) and each time the food was wonderful and the service was very accommodating. This time I had the pan seared day boat scallops and they were succulent and nicely prepared. My husband had the Choppino and once again he was delighted with his favorite dish."

  • "Was looking for a nice place on the water and found this restaurant. Great view of the water and marina. The food was excellent and the service was just right. We were there for lunch and I definitely would go there for dinner. Could be a little hard to find if you didn't know that it is part of the attached hotel."
