Diner Reviews
  • "It annoys me when restaurants and other businesses require that you go to their web site to get your confirmation of reservations, or whatever. Obviously, I can do it. My Mother has a "mailbug" which allows her to get e-mail, but doesn't connect with the internet. Computers, tablets, cell phones, etc. are pervasive, but some people chose not to be a part of cyberspace. It's their right. "

  • "My boyrfiend and I went there to celebrate our anniversary, it was a nice and scenic place. It was also our first time there and the food is phenomenal, a little expensive, but well worth it! we got the steak and chicken and it was cooked to perfection!"

  • "The staff were exceptional! We were well taken care of at all times! Food is always good. Can't stress enough how wonderful the staff was!"

  • "Fresco definitely dresses to impress. Simple, clean design with white color scheme and glass accents. Modern, tasteful menu and sharply-dressed server staff. Excellent views at sunset!"

  • "My friend and I went to fresco to experience their seasonal gnocchi night and I'm so glad we did. They offered the gnocchi with 4 different sauces that all sounded amazing. I had the pesto sauce and my friend had the saracha Poblado creme sauce. Both were sautéed with peas, asparagus, mushrooms, and roasted red peppers and both were amazing. The other two sauces to choose from were a brown bitter and herb or a truffle sauce. You could also choose to add short rib, shrimp, or chicken to the dish, but we did not. I hope fresco runs the gnocchi nite special next year too because I will definitely be returning. A classy dining experience, a great rooftop view, awesome food, and an affordable price is just too much to pass up."

  • "A fine dining experience with careful attention paid by the wait staff to be sure you get what, how you want it and when you want your meal. Well prepared, served hot and in a timely manner our meal was great!"

  • "If you are going to go here, check if there are any large shows at the overture first. We had 4:45 reservations for a 6:30 show and made it with only minutes to share. The kitchen was clearly ocerwhelmed by the rush and we waited 45 minutes for out entrees. Once we got them, they were fantastic."

  • "The only two issues we had were that my husband thought the seafood pasta really did not have enough seafood-quite skimpy on the good stuff. Also, we had asked for doggie bags (boxes x3) which were fine but clumsy so we asked for a bag. The bag was too small to put the box in upright and it ripped so we left the bags at the table. I balanced the stacked boxes back to the car before the show at the Overture Center. Smaller boxes would solve this problem and they would fit in the bags. Besides these two issues everything was wonderful.....the food was delicious and the wine was fantastic. Came highly recommended from a friend and I would recommend it to others. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "This is an excellent place for all occasions. The food is artistically presented. Excellent menu, beautiful setting, a really nice restaurant."

  • "My husband, my daughter and I dined at Fresco before an Overture Center concert. The place was filled as is usual before a big Overture event. Our server asked if we had a time constraint and then paced the meal accordingly. We enjoyed a Caesar and a Roasted Vegetable salad. Both were wonderful. Two of us had fish, one salmon and one barramundi and one had the short ribs. All were terrific and the presentation with vegetables, sauces and starches was perfect. We shared a dessert of mocha creme brulee and it was irresistible. Overall, the service was very good, although a tiny bit slow. We have never been disappointed at Fresco."

  • "We really enjoyed our dinner. Two of us had the lamb shank and two of us had the Barramundi fish. I can speak that the fish was deliciously prepared. The others said the lamb was very tender and prepared very well. Our server was great. He made recommendations and told us, based on his experience how we would enjoy our selections. The ambiance was wonderful. We could see the Capitol building lit up and next to it, also lit up, was the dome from the Overture Center. It was really beautiful! I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Madison. We will go back."

  • "Great place to go before a show at The Overture Center."

  • "The food was exquisite; the atmosphere modern, yet warm and very pleasant. The carpeted floors keeps noise from talking guests muted, yet lively. -such a nice treat when compared with most other environments which seem to bounce noise off of every possible surface to the extent it drains the life out of you. My only disappointment was that the menu seemed a bit limited on choices. There was nice variation amongst options, just not enough of them. I look it would be a great place to dine outdoors, however, the weather isn't quite warm enough to try that just yet."

  • "Fresco is a great place! Very cool location! Gnocchi was best ever! We'll be back when we can sit on the rooftop to dine in warmer weather! Great service! Check it out!"

  • "Had a great dinner this past Saturday at Fresco, The overall atmosphere was inviting, enjoyable and romantic. Had a table with a great view of the Capital and State Street. Our server, Maura, was amazing, very engaging, comfortable and attentive. Our entrees were nicely presented, good portions, and tasty. Love the gnocchi, its a must try for everyone."

  • "Finally! I haven't had a meal that interesting and fun for a long time. The complex combination of flavors made each course an exciting adventure. Loved it! Only complaint, the broccoli rabe was a bit charred... wish I would have said something because I'm sure they would have gladly offered to fix that. The manager stopped by and asked how things were. I appreciated the very attentive service. So glad the waitstaff recommended the salad course (which we split and was plenty!). We both loved the winter vegetable salad. The chevre on it was amazing! I'm looking forward to going back and seeing what they'll offer next. They change their menu seasonally."

  • "I went here with my boyfriend for a romantic dinner and to try the food since I had heard so many good things about it. It was an excellent choice and every part of the experience was notable. Our waitress was attentive and kind and the food was to die for. Even though our reservation was later at night, only due to personal reasons/schedules, it was well worth it! We had been planning on coming here for a long time. This was our first time dining here and we will definitely be back very soon."

  • "On Thursday evening of a busy week, we dined early before a performance of HMS Pinafore. The server gave us time to enjoy our wine before ordering, and attentive service throughout the meal. The food was very good - lamb shank for me and salmon for my husband, preceded by two interesting salads. The ambiance was high energy, yet low key. We hadn't been to Fresco for a while, and will be looking forward to returning before long."

  • "We chose this restaurant for dinner prior to seeing John Prine in concert at the Overture Center in Madison, WI. Fresco is located in the same complex. I enjoyed the menu because it had some unique choices. I had risotto balls as an appetizer, they were very good. The rest of the meal was tasty also, and the server had us out in time to catch the show. Very good experience."

  • "Fresco is a great place to go out if you're looking for a nice, intimate dinner with delicious specialty cocktails and a wide variety of wine. The food is delicious, featuring a lot of seasonal and locally sourced ingredients. The grilled salmon I got was cooked perfectly, but the only thing I didn't enjoy was a burnt flavor from the broccoli rabe. My friend's New York Strip was the most tender steak I've ever eaten; it melted in my mouth. Some of their cocktails change as the exhibits in the Madison Museum of Contemporary Arts exhibits change, which is really cool, as well."

  • "This was my first visit to Fresco, and I will definitely be returning. We had a reservation right at opening, and it filled up quickly. The service was quick, but almost a little too quick. I was asked three times if I was done with my meal. Overall great food, great experience. I had the gnocchis, which I will definitely have again."

  • "If theatre or music is on your schedule this solid restaurant located above the Overture Center is wonderful choice for a pre-theatre dinner with a rooftop view of downtown Madison, very good food and creative preparations."

  • "Had the salmon, again, and again it was cooked to perfection. I still do not get the appeal of those frozen dough ball rolls they pass off as fresh "bread." The only flavor is on the top where the garlic salt is. Had the the duck and pear flatbread appetizer this time, it was very good, except the flatbread could have been warm or more cooked, or something; it tasted like one of those pre-made pizza crusts you get in a bag at the grocery store. Service was great!"

  • "The seared tuna salad is outstanding. Truly one of the best salads around. My husband had the gnocchi with truffle sauce and bacon. It was divine. I had asked to keep the wine list at the table to give me time to decide on a dinner drink after ordering my first drink, but the server walked off with it, never to be seen again. Meals were delivered by someone else, so I asked her for the wine list. She asked what I thought I wanted and I said probably a Cabernet. She replied they only had one by the glass and quickly took off to fetch it before I could ask again to view the list. All that hurrying was a surprise when the drinks didn't arrive until we were nearly finished with dinner, at which time I really didn't want it."

  • "Fresco was our choice for dinner prior to a show at the Overture Center. Convenience was key; and we expected great food and great service. Everything was as we expected with one minor exception. The service staff was a bit inattentive and slow. Here's an example or three: Should it take over 10 minutes to fetch a glass of wine and a martini? Would it trouble a server too much to stop back to see if a cup of coffee needs to be replenished? It might be good to check in with us to see how the food is well before we've basically finished. Overall, we were happy with everything, but a bit closer attention to us and our experience would have been greatly appreciated."

  • "Excellent food and service as always. Unfortunately a very loud drum concert was going on in the atrium at the bottom of the stairs. If a quieter evening is wanted, checking on what events are going on down below would be wise. The staff did everything they could to keep doors closed, and the nature of events at venues in the building is beyond their control."

  • "We went there before a performance at Overture. The staff was attentive and assured us we'd eat in time to go to the performance. The food was great. We had the short ribs and the chicken with risotto. Waitress was really nice. 6:15 was a little late for a 7:30 performance to avoid rushing. Next time we'd go earlier. Also, we'll stop back on a non-performance night to just enjoy the place."

  • "We weren't that impressed with our food, honestly. My boyfriend ordered a 26$ Cioppino pasta and he said it was good, but he has had the same stew at another Madison restaurant for less than 1/2 the price. He also wasn't impressed with his flatbread, again, good but not worth the hefty price. I enjoyed my food, it wasn't exceptional but tasty nevertheless. Seating: we were seated near the area where the food was coming out, and as a result, it was quite smoky and the smell left an odor on my clothes and hair even hours after I had left the restaurant. It didn't smell bad, I just smelled distinctly of food. Service: service was reasonably prompt, but the waitress did try to push a 150$ bottle of Clicquot on us, which wasn't tasteful, IMO."

  • "When we arrived we were seated right away but no one came to our table for nearly 10 minutes, not even to fill our water glasses. When the waitperson did arrive there were no apologies for the wait but just said, "can I get you something to drink". We ordered the duck flat bread for an appetizer (excellent?) My wife ordered the lamb shank which was served only slightly warm. I ordered the steak and it was very tender and cooked perfectly. Wine selection was interesting but quite expensive. At the end of the meal another couple sat down next to us and were served fresh rolls. None were brought to our table. In addition we had to get a salt shaker from the next table as there none at our table. Overall OK but disappointed."

  • "I was expecting an elegant, yet cozy and intimate dining experience with superb food. Overall, it was only okay to good. The modern chic atmosphere wasn't my style (but that's me). Homemade bread was delicious. My entree had room for improvement. The lamb itself was great (tender and fell right off the bone) but the side was terribly disappointing. Flavors that didn't compliment each other well and were kind of dull. My guests claimed their meals were excellent though. I didn't walk out feeling satisfied with the experience."
