Diner Reviews
  • "We celebrated our 45th anniversary at Fresco and were delighted with our choice."
    Dined on 7/8/2014
  • "We were able to sit outside and although you can hear the street noise you sit so far up that I don't think it is that loud. The food is always amazing and good."
    Dined on 6/28/2014
  • "Service was great. Waitress was great and answered our questions and gave recommendations when we asked. This location gives a different view of the city. The Halibut and Salmon entrees were good and the shrimp starter was very good. The wine list was short however the wine we had was also very good. We were there for a birthday but they had nothing special to offer."

  • "Took a job candidate for dinner, sat outside. Bus on street below was sitting there for about 10 minutes, which was noisy, but otherwise it was great to be able to sit outside. Ordered salmon, which was done perfectly. All the food and service was excellent. For me, the only negative was that they only serve Pepsi products, which I hate. Most will find this weird, but the Pepsi thing will probably keep me from returning."

  • "Our dinner outside was very nice. The appetizers of salmon and scallops were very good - especially the scallops. My dinner of the haddock was super and my companion's dinner of the pasta and seafood was very nice as well. The salads were pretty good and the wine the same. Overall a very good rating."

  • "Everything we'll prepared and attractively plated. Nice clean modern decor."

  • "Excellent place for pre-concerts/show drinks and/or dinner. They will not let you miss 'curtain up'!! Great cocktails and wine spritzers that you cannot find at other places."
    Dined on 6/22/2014
  • "Very poor service, rude staff, dirty tables outside! Poor menu! High prices!"
    Dined on 6/22/2014
  • "The list of entrees is varied enough to please the most discerning palate."

  • "We went to this restaurant for our anniversary dinner and were really impressed. We ordered the short rib, the tuna salad, and the risotto cakes. The short rib had a really refined, well-developed flavor and was cooked perfectly. The salad was a clever deconstructed take on tuna salad with a great dressing, and the risotto cakes had a great blend of crunch and a savory purée. Overall the food was delicious and smart in concept without being too heavy or expensive. The location on top of the museum really can't be beat - there are lots of interesting sculptures to take in and the view of the street below is really nice. Our only complaint was that our waiter appeared to forget about us a few times."

  • "We enjoyed a lovely meal sitting outside. We both had fish -- salmon and halibut. The servings were small but well presented and delicious. The service was friendly and attentive. We thoroughly enjoyed it!"

  • " This is such a nice spot. We ate on the rooftop right at sunset. Great views in any direction. The rooftop garden is nicely done, the staff all great and the food was excellent. We will gladly return again when we are. In Madison."

  • "The weather was perfect for dining on the balcony where we had a view of Madison & the sounds of music from the street. Service was professional and pleasant. We appreciated the inquiry about our schedule as we were attending a performance at the Overture Center later that evening. We never felt rushed, and felt well looked after. The risotto mushroom cake starters were outstanding. The gnocchi in brown butter sauce were excellent, so good that it was hard to leave behind those I was too full to finish. My husband's salmon was less successful as it was somewhat dry. His Caesar salad was more satisfying. We would certainly return here for dinner. It is especially nice when attending performances at the Overture Center."

  • "We had tickets to see War Horse, the dining was excellent service was wonderful an presentation of the food an drinks made it complete plus the food was a pleasure to our taste buds."

  • "They have great good, but really pack you into a small space. Great outdoor seating. Service is good, but slow."
    Dined on 6/11/2014
  • "Overall, very good but I do not eat dairy products and the rolls served contained butter in the baking. I enjoy bread with my wine so this was disappointing."

  • "We visit Fresco every time we're in Madison, and I have always ordered the short ribs. Because the restaurant varies it's menu by season, items offered are always fresh, and always enjoyable!"

  • "All 8 of us loved our food, the ambiance, the service, view and being downtown. It's my new favorite restaurant. Can't wait to go back!"
    Dined on 6/6/2014
  • "We were there on a movie night, with music. Very busy but our order came relatively quickly. The halibut and the cioppino were borh excellent. A large wine list."

  • "Attentive service, nice wine list, good menu, appealing atmosphere."

  • "The food for all in our group was outstanding from the appetizers to the dessert! Had my 11 year old twins along, they split an entree, salad and enjoyed the appetizers. It was my birthday so we were treated to a dessert; chose chocolate - a piece for everyone. My daughter-in-law is gluten intolerant, but there was an extensive menu for her to choose . Though It poured while we were dining, we still enjoyed to view and sculpture garden."

  • "We're from the SF area, in Madison for a conference. We picked Fresco because my partner wanted to try the pork belly. Overall, it was a pretty typical "California cuisine" experience, although it was nice paying a bit less than we would at home. ;-) The pork belly was good, although a bit too intense -- we would have been unhappy had either of us gotten it as our only entree. (We actually weren't all that hungry because we'd had afternoon tea, so we just got the scallops and the asparagus salad, sharing it all around.) Note: the quiet rating is because the restaurant was mostly empty. "

  • "Most outside seating in downtown Madison is curbside. Fresco is 2nd story away from traffic. Menu is for foodies too. Service is attentive and pleasant."
    Dined on 5/30/2014
  • "We discovered Fresco from our trips to the Overture Center. Awesome place with great food! Everything you want in a great resteraunt. The menu choices are always refreshing, with a real touch of style. Sat outside this time and the rooftop dining is awesome. Expect a little different meal experience as everything is made fresh for your order, so a longer wait for food, but well worth it."

  • "My boyfriend and I celebrated our anniversary last Friday night at Fresco. We loved our experience! Great cocktails, food, and of course the view. Our bar tender and waitress were very friendly and pleasant. We will definitely recommend Fresco to others. We can't wait to go back!"
    Dined on 5/23/2014
  • "The rooftop setting is really great. Coupled with the delicious foodie-type food and proximity to what's going on downtown, Fresco is a wonderful place to dine. "
    Dined on 5/23/2014
  • "The only complaint we had was that our waiter didn't get back to our table very frequently, which only became problematic when we wanted to order dessert and still have time to make it to our show at the Overture Center in a timely fashion. All things considered, a very minor issue that didn't end up being a problem. Highly recommend Fresco to anyone. "

  • "Went with my Mom and daughter and we all enjoyed our meal. We had chicken, steak and lamb all were very good. The restaurant itself is quiet with great views of the city. Would go back. "

  • "My wife and I have been to Fresco a number of times and have always been impressed. Food and service have always been on point for each of the 5-6 times that we have been there. They also update the menu regularly, so there are frequently new choices with a seasonal focus. My only criticism is that the portion sizes of some (but not all) menu items are smaller than expected. The space isn't incredibly large and you should definitely try for reservations with a group (especially on a Friday or Saturday). They do, however, offer a reasonable waiting area, bar, and space outside on the rooftop (if it is nice enough out)."

  • "The soup- a veggie special- was a broth that was mediocre and very little veggies and a small cup for much money The salad was ok The ciopinni was pretty good"
    Dined on 5/14/2014
  • "This is really a special spot hidden above the Overture Center. Similar to the look and feel to the Overture Center, the space is very minimalist and modern. The menu is very diverse, not focused on one genre of food. If you have picky eaters, the menu could be a slight turnoff because its very focused on what's fresh for the season, which I love, but there were people in our party who were a bit intimated by the unique pairings and flavors. (Aka, this isn't a "meat and potatoes" kind of place). Overall, we'll definitely be going back for special occasions. "

  • "The usual satisfying dining experience at Fresco was missed this time. With a wedding reception in the sculpture garden, and a full house inside and outside, the staff appeared to struggle. When our order was made, the starter selection, which was observed sitting under the warming lights for twenty minutes, was brought immediately to our table--warm, not hot, suggesting it was not our order, but an earlier one. There was a delay in receiving glass of wine with main course"

  • "Great food and wonderful atmosphere. I wish the "ice cream sandwich" tasted as good as its description. Luckily the beignets made up for them. "

  • "This is a great place if you are attending an event in the Overture Center. The food and service are consistently good. The staff if very friendly and helpful. Nice place to eat outside when the weather is warm. I wish they would change their menu more often or offer specials on weekends. We eat here so often that I am getting a bit bored with the menu. You need to make a reservation if you are going on a weekend when there is likely to be a large crowd for an event in Orchestra Hall or there are events at both OH and the Capitol Theater. "

  • "Our dinner was really pleasant. We arrived just as most of the diners were finishing up and heading off to the opera, so the restaurant got calm and quiet after that. The food was delicious and beautifully served. A couple of us had the special fish entree, which was excellent. My first course, "Asparagus salad," was a bit of a disappointment, however, as it had only a few spears of asparagus in amongst the lettuce leaves. I felt the asparagus should have been a lot more prominent. We have come here for Valentine's Day and for our anniversary; it's a special occasion restaurant or a place to take out of town guests."

  • "This was not my first time dining at Fresco, it is one of my favorite places in Madison to go for a nice meal. Their gnocchi rocks my world."

  • "The starters we had were exceptional: asparagus salad, and scallops. Combined, plenty for a meal."
