  • "...our appetizers where prepared by the chef and sat on the bar for quite a while. When the waiter brought them to the table the soup was no longer hot. When the entrees were ready, they brought them to the table but my husband was only half way through his appetizer! We were really surprised that they would do this at a high end restaurant."

  • "The place was busy when we arrived but calmed down soon after and has a very nice atmosphere. The food was excellent on this visit. the asparagus soup with a little bacon was amazing, one of the best we've had. My husband had the sirloin with bearnaise and I had the sea bass. Both were very good. We will definitely return. One thing we would like is to actually sit in front of the fireplace. We have requested it many times, but have only been close to it."

  • "My daughter and I both enjoyed our dinners.. The Beet Soup was amazing! She had the Salmon with lentels and Red Pepper Sauce and she loved it! The Bananas Foster Cheese Cake was great! We had a lovely evening. Only problem was the service was a little slow. The waiter was very kind to ask the chef if my halibut plate was gluten free (it was :)"

  • "Three of us friends celebrated a birthday. The food was excellent, especially my Sea Bass, cooked perfectly.. One friend had the sirloin steak...again cooked as ordered. The dining room is small and inttimate, including a fireplace and outside patio dining. they alwasy have "specials" on the week-end. Many under $25.00 each."

  • "Menu doesn't have a lot of variety. Only offered a single special menu. if you want wine it is fine but they don't have anything else to offer, like no cocktails and very limited choice of soda. Not kid friendly. Service is somewhat lacking for the type of food served. We have been there twice and will not go again."

  • "We went there 5 years ago and we were appalled by the lack of ambiance. The restaurant has been around since 1995. It is in bad need of a restoration / refurbishment, etc. We waited 1 1/2 hours for the food to be served, the place was not full. There was only 1 cook in the kitchen who was making more noise, throwing pans and dishes around. The noises was louder than loud music at a noisy restaurant. I heard some customer, who was leaving, mentioned to the cook to keep it down. The cook said sorry but he was busy and continued his fanfare. The food was luke warm, at best. The waiter came by twice (not to pour wine, but to ask "how you all doing" after the meal was served, twice within 5 minutes."

  • "Took our son & his wife to dinner. They had our table waiting for us and out waitress greeted us and was very friendly. The did not have many people in the restaurant, so it was very quiet. My son & I had the fresh halibut and my husband & daughter in law had the filet. They were both excellent. Our service was very good, too. They have a very nice wine list and not real pricey. For a neighborhood restaurant it has a lot of ambiance."

  • "We moved to the other side of town, so had not been to the French Market Grill in a year or so. We loved coming back, and will make the effort to come again soon. The food is prepared very, very well. Hats off to the kitchen overall and the head chef. The service has always been a bit slow, but it's not intolerable, so come with an expectation of a "relaxed" evening, and you will be pleased."

  • "Everything was fine, except the French Market Grill failed to tell open table that we were there on Thursday night and we got an email from Open Table that we were "No Shows". I have, the receipt that proves we were there for dinner. Reluctant to book future reservations through Open Table as a result."

  • "The good: Food was great. Beef Bourguignon was wonderful, salads were fresh, favorite wine from Châteauneuf du Pape was available in a 1/2 bottle, and service was very good despite a busy night. The Bad: Open Table reservation made, arrived on time, dined & paid, but I was listed as a “no show”. Bread was about 1/2 normal amount and there were no bread plates on the table. Water served in very small glasses. Plates or dishes were thrown around in the kitchen to the point it was very loud & distracting. The Ugly: Management berated and criticized a server in the middle of the dining room in front of guest making both the employee and guest feel embarrassed. Were hoping this is an anomaly, since we have had such great meals in the past."

  • "Wife and I have dined here often. Most of the time, the food & service is outstanding & French market Grille was becoming a favorite. Not sure what happened, but tonight was an off-night. Service was very slow and no busser tonight. Server was busy and bless her heart - did her best. Several items on the menu were not available - suppose supply problems. Salads were good and Main courses were tasty but portion size much smaller than prior visits. Food was very good, well prepared and presented, just smaller portions than in the past. Will still come back, anyone can have an off night."

  • "We have been to this restaurant several times, and really enjoyed it, but this may have been our last visit. Our reservation was ignored, the wait staff was overwhelmed, there was no one in charge and the atmosphere was chaos. Our water, wine, bread and soup were all brought at the exact same time (soup cold, no wine glasses, and that was the last water re-fill we got). The food was okay (not as good as usual, but okay). The wrong dessert was delivered with no option for coffee. The overall atmosphere of angry customers did nothing for the ambiance. It was explained that they were short staffed but no effort was made to make things right or apologize. I really got the feeling that they just didn't care."

  • "I have been eating at the French Market Grill occasionally for about 20 years. It has always been absolutely amazing. This time it was very disappointing. When I bought a coupon through the UT I came upon reviews that were all hit or miss. Because of this I was alerted that there may be a problem. Sadly what I fear most came true. The food was definitely poor. How could this have happened? I believe the owner is the same. I am so disappointed and sad."

  • "The ambience was wonderful - we were seated right in front of the fireplace. The appetizers were flavorful and plentiful, salad and steamed clams. Our entrees were quite good. The stewed lentils - not so much! The desserts were mediocre. My husband loves creme brûlée - theirs was runny. The service was very good and the wine was excellent!"

The waiter did not know anything about the food--he kept referring us to the maitre di who made excuses that the food we received was not really what we had orderd...it had changed. the dessert pastries were TERRIBLE and old tasting.   • "Resturant had no ability to deal with reservations, no one in control, and very frustrated customer. Food was set menu vs ale carte, and really not good at all. My meat was ok, but the vegtables were unedible. Our server was excellent, but the general attitude of the staff and making us wait in a line outside pretty much ruined the Valentines day experience. This was pure bad management, with no one seemingly in control at all."

  • "We had a 6:30 reservation for Valentines day. When we arrived, we stood in the foyer for at least 10 mins. w/o any acknowledgment. Servers kept rushing by w/o even eye contact. A huge line formed behind me and there was no one to help us. We were finally seated. We waited 10 minutes until we got water. The water glasses didn't event match. Mine was like a small cocktail glass and my husbands a large glass. Again, no one even came to our table to say they would be with us. We waited a full 20 minutes without any service and left. I stopped at the front desk and informed the older man there that we never received service after 20 minutes and all he said is "they are very busy". Are you kidding? A friend told me of a similar experience."

  • "We got there right on time for our Open Table reservation. There was no hostess or maître d', and a waiter told us they were not using reservations. After waiting 40 minutes, and getting a nice complementary glass of wine, we decided my 90 year old mother couldn't wait any longer and left. The hard-working waiter came out to the parking lot and promised he would seat and serve us right away. We did sit down and service was a little slow and very apologetic. The food was ok. Clearly the problem was lack of help. There were several unbussed tables while we were waiting and all the servers were clearly overworked and doing their best. But until they get more help and a host or hostess it is too frustrating to go there."

  • "I ordered top sirloin with bearnaise sauce on the restaurant menu. What I got was top sirloin on mashed potatoes and gravy. My wife wanted the beef bourguignon which was on the online menu but not available at the restaurant. She got flavorless shrimp scampi instead. A complimentary dessert of crepes suzette floated overwhelmingly in Cointreau with no butter or Grand Marnier. Cold pre-meal bread was served in a bare little basket and the steak knife was plastic handled. The house Merlot was good and the waitress was friendly and gracious. Cozy, warm ambiance but a somewhat slow food service with only six other diners seated in the restaurant."

  • "We keep coming back. The atmosphere is very nice. We like the fireplace in the winter and fall and the patio is nice most of the time. They have heaters if it is cool. Their food is always good. It is served in interesting ways.My husband and I had the top sirloin which was served on a bed of mashed potatoes with asparagus and then the steak cut into 3 pieces and bearnaise on top. It had some type of very small squash with it as well. Our friend had salmon and said it was very good, too. We were there on a Thursday and the place was about half full when we arrived. before we were finished most of them were leaving. We like places that aren't real crowded or loud and this was perfect."

  • "Arrived promptly for res & seated right away. Restaurant 1/3-full but took +10 minutes for wait staff (of which there were plenty) to stop at table to get drink order. Took at least another 10 min. to get dinner order placed – no apps – & then nearly an hour to get our food. During wait, no one every stopped by table to check on us or bring another drink. Sirloin w/Bernaise cooked rare as ordered, but it was chewy, difficult to cut. Sea bass in Mediterranean sauce was overcooked, dry–2 small lumps of filet instead of 1, & 1 piece practically falling off plate. Just ate veggies which were at least al dente. Kitchen clearly behind as other tables waited a long time too, but people seated well after us were served first. Won't go back."

  • "The French Market is the same owners as Hexagone downtown SD. The menu has wonderful choices making a must return to spot. The signature duck confit was a hit with everyone who ordered it. The chef was also able to adapt the scallop dish to be delicious and within dietary restrictions of one of the dinners. The setting is very comfortable, like being home (only better with the excellent service). There is a large outdoor dining area that I will go back to enjoy in the warmer weather."

We were a little surprised that all the deserts were not available at 1 pm as they had not yet been prepared. Maybe a little critical on our part, but it seemed a little surprising.   • "Called prior to leaving to say we would be a little late and we were told no problem. When we got there just a few minutes later we were told they had been working on a pipe leak problem, thought it would be fixed, but it wasn't so we couldn't go in. They had my phone number through the reservation so there is no excuse for #1, mentioning it when I called just 15 minutes earlier, #2, calling my cell phone before arriving there."

  • "We were celebrating a friend's 87th birthday with a group of 6. The service and food were very good. I had the scallops which were outstanding. Everyone enjoyed their meals including the Birthday Girl. Our reservations were on a Sunday at 11:30 so I thought that the restaurant would have had a brunch menu, however, there were only Lunch items on the menu. We had been to brunch here before and had always enjoyed it so I was surprised that brunch was not offered."

  • "The food was incredible. The pace was leisurely as it should be in a higher end restaurant. All food was cooked to perfection and the wine was wonderful. The wine prices are excellent. The ambience is cozy and romantic. We have dined there several times and would even more frequently if we didn't have to travel 25 miles one way."

  • "The French market wasn't very busy but the service was the strangest we ever experienced. We received an email for a special and decided to go. Many serving and billing mistakes. The grand finale was never being asked if we needed any coffee, tea, or an after dinner drink (which we usually order). Instead of being served our complimentary dessert, they gave us the yummy dessert in a styrofoam to go container. So tacky that it was funny! This was the first time that we had an issue at this restaurant. Another patron the same evening also had the same issues. The main course was excellent! I hope this isn't going to be a common scenario. Usually an excellent restaurant with excellent service!"

  • "We have enjoyed many great dinners and an occasional lunch at the French Market over about a 20 year period, each time celebrated by wonderfully cooked and presented dishes. This latest time was a shocking disappointment from the appetizer through the main courses. The dishes we ordered were ones that we had had many times before. This time they didn't look or taste anything like what the French Market has had a reputation for serving. when I inquired about the chef, it was learned he had been there a couple of months. While I cannot prove that to be the source of our disappointing meals, I suspect it might be unless the owner is cutting cost on the French Market's food produce."
