  • "This was our third time to French Market Grille and we have come to understand that it is a very nice, neighborhood bistro. The menu is a bit limited, but the food is good. They are always out of something - last time it was lemons and no one wanted to walk the 100 feet to Sprouts to buy more - but that is what you come to expect at this otherwise fine restaurant.The wine list is more limited than most, but the wines are reasonably priced and corkage ($20) is a bit steep for this venue considering that the stemware is of fairly low quality."

  • "We eat here at least every 2-3 months. It's always nice, sometimes great. It can be more than quiet depending how big the crowd. We like it quiet rather than loud so try to come a little later. Two of us had the bean with bacon soup of the day and it was excellent. All of the entrees were very good. One had scallops and thought it was very good. Two of us had the steak with bearnaise and it was very good. The atmosphere was very good and condusive to good conversation. The wine was very nice as well."

  • "Food by far surpasses the wait staff and the decor, but it was odd to have my steak served in a huge bowl, i asked the cook before i was leaving and he apologized and said that they had run out of plates and he would address that to the owner. Sad to say will not be back for a while till the dump the waiters and buy some plates for peet sakes , too bad because some of our dishes were way better than their competitors near by."

  • "This restaurant could be good, but it is outdated. The service is consistently terrible. The entire wait crew needs some good training. Our drink order was never taken. Our dishes were mis-matched. A saucer plate was a bread and butter plate. We were missing silverware. Please please train these people."

  • "Very disappointing. This restaurant used to be a neighborhood gem, and sadly this is no longer the case. At 7:00pm on a Friday night - there was no mgmt, no host, no bartender, and just 3 servers and a cook running the show, and each server only had two tables each. Our first impression was that the restaurant might be closing - and after our experience we're certain it will be. The service was ATROCIOUS, their "signature" onion soup was the most tasteless we have ever had - we couldn't understand how something so dark and attractive could taste so bad. None of us (4) could eat it, and when our server took the bowls away, didn't even ask why we didn't eat it. No drink refills without begging and don't even ask for a glass of water!"

  • "Omg short ribs were soooooo good crispy on the outside , moist and so tender on the inside, the sauce!!! Wow perfect, the ravioli were just ok I think they defiantly we're not homemade so ahhhhh. But who cares wine was perfect Miguel our waiter suggested a bottle of chateau bizard off the list it was delicious, he was so attentive and great! The only thing was the bread wasn't hot but when I mentioned it the corrected it right away. Also the chocolate bomb he suggested was out of this world, apple tart was great but would have been better with caramel sauce. But over all what a excellent place, but my only really complaint was the chips of paint falling off the air ducts gross"

  • "This time around was the best experience I have had at this restaurant yet, the menu has been reduced a little a few of my favorites are gone but the waiter told me he would ask the chef if he could make me a tortilla cheese sandwich, the chef said yes but I decided to try the Cobb salad, best I have ever had everything was fresher than normal, chicken hot, lettuce crisp, and the dressing just right. Wow what a change if they keep it up I'll be here every week. Thanks french market"

  • "Have eaten here many times, always a wonderful experience. This last visit did not meet our expectations. They were out of three items we ordered. Three of the entrees were very good, one was terrible over salted. The waiter seemed indifferent at best. I would however go back as I am hoping this was just an off night and not a sign of things to come."

  • "I can overlook bad service and an uncreative menu if the food is good, which in this case it wasn't. Poor service and even worse food from a place that claims its cuisine comes from a country where it takes its food more seriously than its politics. There are better restaurants in Rancho Bernardo, let alone San Diego, to patronize rather than to waste your time and money on this sorry excuse for a fine dining establishment. The only thing it got right was the location; right next to a Goodwill store...where it belongs. "

  • "Though they noted having several "classics", we tried a few including the French onion soup (bitter tasting), escargot (all garlic), and the scallops, which were good. We decided to go to another french place down the road which was much better, for our main course."

  • "Our reservation on Mother's Day was for 1pm. We were finally served our first course at 2:45! The restaurant was so overcrowded, my daughter had to get up and move her chair to let another party leave their table. They were so understaffed and harried that we had to ask for everything; bread, water refills, silverware, sugar for the iced tea and our food! We were told a few times that "It will just be a few minutes," which was merely a pacifier. The owner obviously decided to capitalize on Mother's Day and chose profits over good service and a special experience for us Mothers that were being treated by our children. At $32-$38 per plate with no Champagne, this was an overpriced exercise in frustration. We got our check at 4pm! Wow."

  • "This place might have been something 30years ago. The entire crown consisted of 85+ year olds who could not tell the difference between good or bad food. Everything was so overcooked and tasteless. The mussels were bad. Went right thru me within a half hour. Chef Ramsey would have a field day at this place. NEVER EVER AGAIN!!!!!!"

  • "Our Mother's Day Brunch was disappointing, slow and relatively expensive. The restaurant was busy and understaffed both regarding the chefs and the waiters. It took over 2 hours to dine. The meals were not served together, meaning some in our group were served while others were waiting a significant time. The brunch was 3 courses, and it would have been better to simplify the menu and eliminate a course. We ordered 2 macaroni and cheese meals from the kid's menu, and was served angel hair pasta in wine and sharp cheese sauce. Neither meal was eaten, but each cost $15. Although the appetizer was good, my main course was average at best, and we took the dessert home in a box."

  • "Went to French Market Grille for Mother's Day, and I will never go back. We were seated a little bit late, which was fine. It's a busy day. We ordered drinks and got them within a few minutes, which was fine. Then it took over AN HOUR to get our salads. I'm talking like 1:15. I know it was a busy day, but, come on. It was a set menu! Worst of all was the owner. He was smug and unapologetic. Didn't say sorry just made excuses. No offer to comp anything. I can't believe we paid full price for that meal, and I'm not a complainer...it was just absurdly bad."

  • "This would be perfect on a calm evening, but unfortunately, we went for mother's day brunch when it was extremely packed. Even though they had a price fixed set menu, they couldn't keep up. It took 30 minutes for our appetizers to arrive. It was then an additional 1 hour and 20 minutes before our entrees came! Overall, brunch took over 2.5 hours. It was ridiculous. Our appetizers were delicious, but it went downhill from there. 2 in our party ordered the eggs benedict, and they were served COLD. Not lukewarm, completely cold. The restaurant hardly apologized. For dessert, my mother's blueberry and ice cream cassis was served with the ice cream fully melted. It was an ice cream soup. Very disappointing. They do not handle large crowds well."

  • "We were hoping to enjoy a nice evening out. Unfortunately, our server, Miguel, ruined the entire dining experience for us. He didn't seem to want to work that evening or be cordial or helpful to us as diners. Usually when you go to a restaurant, the server asks if you would like any drinks, cocktails, or beverages at the start of the meal. He said nothing & offered nothing. In fact, after he took our orders for food, my husband had to ask what kind of beer they had for drinks. Miguel said they had no beer! We then saw other diners with beer on their tables. To us, the service is an integral part of the dining experience - it's not just the food or the ambiance. Miguel ruined our special evening out."

  • "We went to have dinner but we're disappointed. Service was the biggest problem. Only 2 servers for entire place plus manager. Manager did nothing to help so poor servers had to run around trying to cover multiple tables. In our case we received inferior attention. Food only so so, thus the 3 star rating. Finally, manager didn't check us in so we're had to work with opentable to get credit. "

  • "...our appetizers where prepared by the chef and sat on the bar for quite a while. When the waiter brought them to the table the soup was no longer hot. When the entrees were ready, they brought them to the table but my husband was only half way through his appetizer! We were really surprised that they would do this at a high end restaurant."

  • "The place was busy when we arrived but calmed down soon after and has a very nice atmosphere. The food was excellent on this visit. the asparagus soup with a little bacon was amazing, one of the best we've had. My husband had the sirloin with bearnaise and I had the sea bass. Both were very good. We will definitely return. One thing we would like is to actually sit in front of the fireplace. We have requested it many times, but have only been close to it."

  • "My daughter and I both enjoyed our dinners.. The Beet Soup was amazing! She had the Salmon with lentels and Red Pepper Sauce and she loved it! The Bananas Foster Cheese Cake was great! We had a lovely evening. Only problem was the service was a little slow. The waiter was very kind to ask the chef if my halibut plate was gluten free (it was :)"

  • "Three of us friends celebrated a birthday. The food was excellent, especially my Sea Bass, cooked perfectly.. One friend had the sirloin steak...again cooked as ordered. The dining room is small and inttimate, including a fireplace and outside patio dining. they alwasy have "specials" on the week-end. Many under $25.00 each."

  • "Menu doesn't have a lot of variety. Only offered a single special menu. if you want wine it is fine but they don't have anything else to offer, like no cocktails and very limited choice of soda. Not kid friendly. Service is somewhat lacking for the type of food served. We have been there twice and will not go again."
