  • "At the back of a not so promising alley, is this charming, old NY feeling restaurant. I've never gotten in at night - it was always busy - but thought of it for a very nice, quiet lunch there with a friend. We enjoyed the food, the ambience, and the visit with each other."

  • "Heard a lot about this place. I think the best thing about the place is the unique location. The was just average. Most dishes lacked flavor. I had asked them beforehand whether they could make non-alcoholic and they said yep they could to some nice summery drinks. When we got there...the waiter first just said no they can't. After pressing they got me done thing which was just average. Anyway I would not go there again. There are plenty if interesting places in the neighborhood that you should try before going here."

  • "Came here with a group of old friends I hadn't seen in a while. Everyone enjoyed the cocktail menu as well as the food (the artichoke dip and the French 75 were the two big hits). Had also been to Freeman's in a more intimate and personal setting, which the restaurant was fantastic for as well."

  • "Decor and feel of the restaurant was very interesting (in a good way). We were 10min late for our res but there were no issues and we were seated immediately (so grateful since we had such a large party). Some dishes were much better than others. Best were the bacon & egg biscuit (but quite small), egg skillet, and pork sandwich. The grilled cheese was nothing special. Bloody Mary's were pretty good, but very spicy. Service was average - would have expected more attentiveness given the size of our group and amount we ordered."

  • "I took a potential client to a late lunch here (at 2:30 hardly a rush). In my reservation and in person I asked for a table by the window, which we would have waited for, however the hostess sat us in a tight table, next to a doorway, next to another couple, in an empty room. The good thing is both of us are familiar with the restaurant. However we were discussing doing business together 3 feet away from a couple that sounded like they wanted to date other people. The hostess missed the point of my request, both through open table and in person. Food was great, though there were no bean or alternate protein options for my vegan guest. Our lunch was awkward and unimpressive, lucky the deal went through in spite of our outing."

  • "Interesting decor. Took 13 year old granddaughter and mid 20's nephew for lunch. She said burger was very good he thought the bean burger was good. I had a turkey sandwich, bread was dry. After looking over menu thought lunch suited our group better. Very attractive front of restaurant."

  • "Excellent food and ambience. Very romantic, good for special occasions. Beautiful restaurant and decor. Love the alleyway when you enter the restaurant. The devils on horseback appetizer is phenomenal and you must order it, also the artichoke dip and the mussels. I made reservations for 6 people, and they wouldn't seat us because the whole party had not arrived. I personally think they should still seat you because you end up waiting awkwardly at the bar. After fighting with them, they seated me, which i think was good customer service."

  • "too dark for a 615PM summer booking - my fault... tables are tiny - but the food was excellent, especially the chicken. The Californian rose came from a bottle that had been opened a little too long. server kindly gave another alternative on the house (or her?) after I mentioned this (and had finished it). all in all great spot and you can see why it has been successful for so long. I will be back - happily."

  • "Went here for a Brunch with a large group and had a great time! When we first entered I was a little taken back by the small space but when we were taken to our table we were shown to the second floor and to a very comfortable dining space! Servers were very attentive and made excellent recommendations as well as asked the kitchen when we had a few guest with food restrictions. Will definitely be back!"

  • "At the end of a little alley is Freemans. Open the door to the quaint little front and a candlelit dining split into several rooms give the feeling of a bit of privacy and a bit of mystery to the place. The food was a bit on the smaller portion size for us midwesterners, but everything was very good and well worth the $$$."

  • "Freemans was perfect for brunch with friends we haven't seen in forever. The hipster hunting lodge ambiance was great; the service was accommodating, generous, and on point. The brunch was very good -- I will be back for lunch or dinner to try some dishes that are a little more adventurous. The artichoke dip is as good as everyone says it is."

  • "A group of my girlfriends got together for brunch to celebrate my birthday. The table upstairs was out of the way and perfect for us to be able to sit down and catch up without having to shout over music or other tables. The food was amazing, as were the cocktails. I hadn't been to Freemans in years and it's even better than I remembered. I will definitely be back again soon!"

  • "Probably the best part of the experience is the approach, walking down deserted Freeman Alley, like a quiet street in Paris. Lodge-like inside, tables are tightly placed, but it still has a neighborhood, somewhat trying to be hip vibe. There was a slight bit of attitude at reception (if your whole party is not with you, you are subtly dismissed). But, the food is pretty interesting and hearty -- and the service did NOT have the unexpected tight-assed attitude upon arrival, which makes all the difference when dining."

  • "We had a group of 14 and split up into 2 groups because of the minimums if we did a private room. Although we all enjoyed the brunch, my only complaint was the group that sat at 11AM couldn't get any alcohol until noon. It would have been a good thing to know when we were making reservations. The food was great! The service was stellar and the atmosphere was as funky as we had hoped. Thank you! "

  • "A vegetarian friend suggested this place after she had had a peek inside (but didn’t dine). ”Looked perfect for you meat-lovers, lots of stuffed animals on the wall.” And she was right, both the filet mignon and the free-range chicken were cooked to perfection. Highest mark for the starters as well, we had ”Devils on Horseback” and bruschetta with an incredible artichoke dip. Got to mention the cocktails, too – I had the bittersweet and well-balanced Freemans Cocktail. The venue is located at the end of Freeman Alley, so you have to know it’s there not to miss it. This place was perfect for a romantic evening out."

  • "Went to eat at Freemans with my wife during our trip to NYC; the restaurant was articulately constructed with a mixed variety of decor . The service was very good. The hot artichoke dip and Shrimp / Pork sausages are definitely not to miss. My only disappointment was that the daily market fish, the cream sauce it was served with was super salty. Despite my comment to the waitress there seemed to be no attention to my complaint which made me question on how much they cared about their customers opinions!"

  • "Love the restaurant, the food, the drinks, the ambiance and the service. I've been coming since the earliest days, before the Winchester Mansionesque transformations. Brought four newbies for a recent dinner and was disappointed that my boasting of the artichoke dip and the devils on horseback came up short. Both items came out tepid...as if they had been sitting in the kitchen for hours waiting around. Everyone universally praised their mains. Don't be put off by this one particular instance, most meals here are memorably great."

  • "Was highly recommended to go by a friend who loves it - was massively disappointed. Drinks tabs were lost causing a long delay, and clearly the same happened to our food (although nobody admitted that). We saw people sit down next to us, order, eat, pay and go and STILL we were waiting! All of the food - the side veg, the burger, the mac&cheese was too salty. A heart attack waiting to happen for sure. It has real potential, and the décor is really cute, but this is not a place on my list for a return trip."

  • "Our first visit, so our first time tracking this place down in its off the beaten path location down an alley. We were impressed with the place. It is attractive in a country pub sort of way, and based on the customers the night we went, it draws a spectrum of people at various ages. The food (oysters, mussel salad, fluke, mac&cheese) was very good and simply prepared. The wine list had interesting wines and some values, and even the available wines by the glass list had some good options. My idea of what a gastopub should be."

  • "Went with a ground of friends and it was wonderful. Each of us ordered a dish and it was just great comfort food. From the Mac and Cheese, to the stew, to the Pot Pie. Each was executed simply and deliciously. Plus, the bartender made great random drinks based on our requests. While the drink menu is great, whats better than a bartender just making you delicious drinks. Hidden down the alley, mostly locals, and lets hope it stays that way."

  • "I have been to Freemans before, and while the food was still good, the service fell far short. I went to use the restroom while waiting for my friend. 3 servers/bussers who were not doing anything at the moment (they were not carrying any plates or rushing anywhere, just moseying around) pushed into me to get past, rather than step back to let me, the customer, pass first. Once the rest of my party arrived and were seated, the waiter seemed to be extremely judgmental about our food choices, saying what I chose was "fine, but you should have taken my advice about the special" and at the end of the meal he took the receipts immediately after we signed to see how well we tipped. I think that a refresher on good service might be in order."

  • "We've been to Freeman's twice in the past month for group work dinners (6 people once in the main dining room, 11 people once in the wine room). The food is good. Definitely solid American food but nothing magnificent. Try the artichoke dip and the Devils on Horseback. I would keep returning to Freeman's since the food is good and it feels like you're dining on the set of Gangs of New York but the service both times was pretty uninspired. Drinks don't come quickly. Wait staff is not outright friendly. It seems perhaps they are directed to not be too eager."

  • "I met a friend here for dinner last week. He got there before I did and got a drink at the bar. When I arrived my friend joined me at the host's podium, and I told him I had an opentable reservation. He very rudely then told my friend, "Settle your check before you leave the bar!" And my friend already had and told him so. The host just rolled his eyes. This was at 6:00 PM on a Thursday, so it wasn't crowded at all. The next day I noticed on here that I was still "pending" with Freemans with my dining points. It seemed as though they never marked me as "Seated." When I called to ask them about it the lady who answered the phone snarled, "We don't do that." Why pay to be on this when you won't give your customers their points?"
