Diner Reviews
  • "While the barbecue was very tasty when it finally arrived, our group of 8 did not have a good overall experience here. We arrived at an early time for dinner (5:00) due to travel plans, but that really did not excuse the slow and haphazard service we received. It took them a long time to get a table ready for us upstairs and then they sat us in a corner plastic table when other nice wooden tables were available. Another large group arrived and was served before us. When our food finally came, the meat selections were incorrect and had to be sent back to be fixed. The biggest surprise was the final bill for food and drinks: over $300 for 8 people including 2 that did not order meat. Not a very good value."

  • "The menu was limited but the food was out of this world. We had the pork belly, sausage and chili, and wish we had tried everything on the menu. If you love barbeque, Freedman's is a must while you are in Austin."

  • "The food and drinks were outstanding, BBQ was the best I ever had. The only issue we had was the parking and for members of the group that used a taxi the wait was long."

  • "Brisket sliders were amazing! The stuffed quail was delightful too."

  • "Excellent food, some of the best barbecue we have ever had, Beef brisket was melt in your mouth tender, and the sausage and ribs were also excellent. We were sorry that we couldn't eat outside, but there was a large group on the patio. It looked very nice. Enjoyed our meal and would recommend this to anyone coming to Austin. The only drawback was the parking situation, but the valet handled that for us."

  • "We really love this restaurant and often bring friends here. Our last visit was not quite up to par. We were seated at a table and the noise level bothered us more this time. Also, I recommended the potatoes and this time they were over-seasoned. I was the only one to really eat them at all. The bread was very good as well as the other sides of cabbage slaw and beets."

  • "Great hostric building providing nice ambience. Upscale BBQ with a nice twist and non-traditional sides. The beets were tremedous, Ordered the Holy Trinity--but they were already out of sausage, which was puzzling since it was 7pm and the dining crowd was sparse. Disappointed in liquor seelction. Did not have two of the local vodkas we asked for, and for touting itself as a whisky bar they had no honey whisky selections. Parking is a huge challenge, so carpool, walk or go prepared to spend time "hunting" for a space."

  • "We had an amazing experience at Freedmen's. Amazing food! Really great outdoor setting.Perfect service. We were a happy group of dinners."

  • "The food was great. Unfortunately, we went a couple days after Valentine's Day & they ran out of basically every item on their menu. While their food was great, the menu was small & slightly surprising that they had run out of the few items they offered. I'd suggest going, but not around big events."

  • "Pros: The BBQ is very very good. Cons: Parking is horrible. One tiny lot that might hold a dozen cars. If you can't find a spot in that lot, good luck finding a spot on the street where your car won't be at risk from being door dinged. Freedmans called me at 5:30 to confirm a 7:00 pm reservation, and asked if we wanted to sit inside or out. I said outside would be great. When we got there, they said no outside seating because they had a party of 25. We proceeded to sit inside, and when we ultimately were done with dinner, we exited through the courtyard and so no less that 3 empty tables, and no party of 25 anywhere to be found. Took more than 20 minutes to get our first round of drinks served to us. Not worth the hassle."

  • "Freedmen's got Vakentine's Day right! Their menu is short but stout. The specials of The day included a mouth-watering prime rib and turkey. The grilled beets with chevere and the jalapeño cheese spread with toast were amazing. Our waiter was very attentive and quick to offer suggestions. He was sweet enough to offer a smaller portion of food to my six year old. We sat outside in the beer garden. It was a little cool and drafty but the Silver Fox covering Sinatra was a treat. I ordered a special beet margarita-this could have been better. My guess is that they used a less than premium tequila but that was partially my fault for not asking before I ordered. We will definitely be back for more!"

  • "Pit master Evan LeRoy really knows what he's doing. Went in for lunch and tried the Holy Trinity Plate and everything was great. Brisket had great bark. Pork ribs were on point and the black pepper was heavy. Sausage had a nice pop. Really recommend this place."

  • "The barbecue is excellent. Particularly liked the pork. Drinking is not expensive if you get the whiskey of the month for $5 a pop. Service was a bit distracted but friendly and polite. Overall an excellent spot to hang out... We spent several hours there on Superbowl Sunday afternoon after a fine brunch. Check it out!"

  • "We were seated promptly and in a great spot for our 8pm reservation on Saturday, but they were out of the ribs and one of their specials that evening. That would typically not be an issue except they only have 4 things on the menu & it's a travesty to run out of ribs at 8pm on Saturday!"

  • "I would describe Freedmen's as a Whiskey bar that also serves great barbeque. We enjoyed it very much and will put it on the list of places we go to time and time again."

  • "Great cocktails, great ambiance (given that you're basically on campus), & fantastic BBQ. We were lucky enough to get the end cap (thank you, Brisket Gods) & it had a nice crunch on the outside followed by moist, tender, smoke-ring-filled goodness on the inside."

  • "Really enjoyed the brunch. Get the German potato salad for a side."

  • "The only reason I didn't give a higher rating is that although we were seated promptly ( right at our reserved time) we sort of went unnoticed for a pretty long time. It was like a waiter had not been assigned our table. And our table was almost in the kitchen:( we did request indoor seating... Glad we did because it would have been a bit louder than we wanted this evening. Outside would be fun, though. Once we got our waitress, the service was excellent and the food was wonderful. We will go back."

  • "Best BBQ in Austin. Beef ribs are to die for (the cow already did)."

  • "This place is beyond fantastic! Unbelievable BBQ and the craft cocktails are awesome! This is a must-try!"

  • "This restaurant was hard to find, so we had hoped it was worth the trip. The menu is limited, so when they ran out of several items on the menu, it did not leave much to choose from. Had the Holy Trinity, presentation was cute, but, of course, they ran out of the sausage. And the food was far from hot. Had also ordered the side, at a whopping $5, and got Mac and Cheese, which came in a mini iron skillet, and it was downright COLD!"

  • "I went here with a friend on a very cold day, so not too many people were out and about. In fact, I was surprised they were open. I had read some reviews about their BBQ and they did not disappoint. Excellent ribs and brisket. The restaurant itself is in a historic old building and they have done an amazing job of "saving" this structure. Definitely give it a try if you are in the campus area."

  • "My husband and I spent 2 weeks in Austin and we tried several places for good BBQ and this place was by far our favorite! We didn't get to try Franklin Barbecue due to our time restraints but if you don't want to have to wait 4 hours for your BBQ then I think this is a great choice! I would highly recommend this place for BBQ! Even the vegetables were super delicious!!! We wished we had ordered 2 orders of vegetables and only 1 of the meat honestly. We aren't used to eating that much meat though. LOL. We will be back for sure!!!"

  • "Where else but Freedmen's can you enjoy outstanding barbeque, delicious sides (not just the typical boring beans & slaw), AND enjoy a great cocktail?!! It's a great place to dine and enjoy time with family and friends!"
    Dined on 11/29/2013
  • "We really loved the food! The brisket was excellent and we tried nearly everything on the menu. A criticism would be that the menu is hard to order from for family style servings. The upstairs is not as desirable for seating as the lower level. The service was good but just a bit slow. Once again, we loved the food and we will be back!"
    Dined on 11/29/2013
  • "The BBQ was spectacular at this place, the brisket is not to be missed. The atmosphere was mediocre because it wasn't very busy when we went. Great service, the picnic tables don't really add to the experience."

  • "The meats were actually very good, but hey, this is Austin where BBQ should be good. We found the meats to be very tender, great spices, and good quality. The choice of sides was disappointing and the BBQ sauce was too thin with a strong vinegar taste for my likes. Worst, at 6:30pm, they were already out of banana pudding! They ran out of sausage before we left and by 8:00pm they were out of all BBQ. The service was minimal at best. Took forever to get a refill on my soft drink. All of this in a restaurant that only had about 25% of the tables occupied. While the meats were very good, there are plenty of other choices in Austin for good BBQ. I'd go elsewhere."
    Dined on 11/17/2013
  • "The BBQ was good, but the 'special' items like the charcuterie plate were mediocre and very overpriced. Our server was not great - even by Austin standards, he was inattentive. Drinks were great. We had the daily muddle, the whiskey of the month, and a Moscow Mule made with mescal."

  • "The food and service were great. My out of town guest thoroughly enjoyed her experience. The waitress was also very friendly and attentive."
    Dined on 11/6/2013
  • "Upscale barbecue and creative cocktails best describe the small, but innovative menu. The brisket is as good as it gets. This was my fourth visit and I look forward to the next."
    Dined on 11/1/2013
  • "Freedman's brisket is just about on the same par as Franklin's BBQ, and that says it all! The side orders could be better, but if you are going for the BBQ, you won't be disappointed!"
