  • "The food is very good. The host has a terrible attitude. Because of the last two dinners I'm not sure I would return. When I asked for a specific table near the window I was told it was reserved. No one ever sat there. Those lies are unnecessary!!! And evidence of an arrogant host. Too bad ....the food is quite good ."

  • "incredibly reliable.....great food, service.......easy to have conversation."

  • "Elegant ladies in designer clothes and bags eating delicious salads and drinking iced teas. You might even spot a few celebrities. That is the scene at Fred's. I normally hate that kind of thing, but the service is warm and friendly and very attentive , and the space is lovely."

  • "The salads were generous in portion and my friend ate every grain of her risotto. It was surprisingly loud and crowded. Happily, we were not in the main room, which was a little warm. Service was less than attentive, but I would return."

  • "I arrived at 11:40 for a lunch, and was told they wouldn't seat me until my entire party....of two, including me....was there, despite the fact that the place was empty. When my friend arrived a few minutes later, they proceeded to escort us to a table near the bar that backed up to another table. I asked for another table and was initially told there were none, all the others were "reserved". After I insisted, we were shown a table against the wall. I ordered their ridiculously overpriced chicken salad which was dry, with pieces of fatty chicken. We were never offered any bread or more drinks. Had to beg for the check. With so many other nice restaurants in the area, I definitely won't be going back to Fred's."

  • "fred's salad delish but lunch very pricey. Very good for birthday lunch but sharing the large salad a good idea. and do not miss the french fries!"

  • "We needed a nice place to stop in for lunch while we were enjoying the neighborhood. A friend told us about Fred's so we made a reservation and came for lunch. We liked the food, the service, and the ambience. It helps that they offer their salads in half size - leaves more room for the profiterole for dessert."

  • "We didn't not have high expectations for dinner in a restaurant in a department store, but Fred's is close to where we were going next and had a last minute availability. What a nice surprise to enter a very comfortable and inviting dining room. Service was extremely friendly and helpful. The food was excellent. We had wonderful fish. Definitely worth going to even if you aren't shopping at Barney's."

  • "Where else would you expect a top notch luncheon place but on the top floor of Barney's. This is a great spot, great food, great servcice and a fun "scene". Recommended for real shoppers and NY-kers. I really dont recommend for tourists unless you're shopping AT Barney's. The french fries are famous!"

  • "Great food, atmosphere, happy place!! Wait staff awesome. People watching a little fun too. Although we didn't to dessert, it looked fabulous. Can't wait to return to the city to come back here."

  • "After having to wait 45 minutes for a reservation that was not honored nearly at the time it was supposed to have been, I at least expected the service, once I sat down to be better. The food was mediocre and what was supposed to have been an hour and a half lunch turned into a 3 hour lunch. Anyone restaurant can have an off day, but this was way too off in too many places. It's a convenient location for me so I hope it was just a one time bad experience for us."

  • "We visited Fred's for a lunch when arriving in New York to celebrate our 30th anniversary. It was a bustling place but we were led to a great table beside the window. Service was attentive and the food good, especially the pasta dish with rapini and sausage that my husband ordered. Would definitely recommend it to friends."

  • "If you like a New York scene, this is definitely the place to lunch. I am not one who likes a scene but i often find myself dining at Freds with friends or sitting at the bar alone (even if i am not shopping) b/c the Freds Chopped Chicken salad or Chicken soup .....and french fries (of course) are beyond amazing! The food is delicious. Service is inconsistent. ALWAYS crowded. But usually can find a place at the bar no problem."

  • "We were told we would have to wait ten minutes for a table despite having made a reservation. This was a business lunch, and one of our party left when he heard this news. When I informed the hostess of this, she shrugged. Shrugged. "It's still the same size table," she said. "I'm just going down the list here." We had to wait a further fifteen minutes. I asked for iced tea which never arrived, and then for coffee, which came only after the bill had been paid. Apparently this is a dedicated ladies-who-lunch place and I will never book a business lunch here again."

  • "My friends and I chose Fred's for a girls night dinner we made a reservation for 9pm. we got to the restaurant around 850pm, when we sat we where told that we only had a few min to order because the kitchen closed at 9pm. I could not for the life of me understand why a restaurant would make a dinner reservation for the time the kitchen closed. One of our friends was running late so we had to call to to get her order over the phone so she could have dinner. The wait staff was very nice, they had told us not to rush to take our time and that we can still have drinks and dessert after the kitchen was closed. the food was good, the staff was great. i would recommend going at an earlier time maybe 6pm. "

  • "Food was excellent as always and our waitress was very nice but extremely slow service. "

  • "The food and service were fine. Unfortunately, drinkers at a nearby table spent over one hour talking loudly on separate cell phones, totally oblivious to the fact that they were in a restaurant where most people were trying to enjoy a quiet dinner. Although we were offered another table, the noisy people should have been asked to turn off their cell phones or be moved to a corner of the restaurant where they couldn't disturb others. "

  • "I have been to this restaurant several times for lunch and I am never disappointed. Attentive but discreet service, excellent food and elegant decor. This time I had the pizza and my husband had the pasta with chanterlle mushrooms. Both dishes were divine. If you happen to be in the area shopping make Fred at Barney's your go to lunch stop."

  • "Almost every time I travel to NYC I dine at Fred's. The food selection is excellent. The tastes are awesome. The service is quick and efficient. I have never had a bad meal here."

  • "The hostesses insist on sitting everyone on top of one another even when the restaurant is basically empty. They also tend to be quite rude. Overall the service is inattentive, but not horrible. The food is fine...but the gelato is excellent."

  • "Hidden away in Barneys, nothing very special, the usual italian, some pizza and pasta, salads. The service is pretty good but it also feels kind of old and tired. The restaurant is fairly quiet, the customers are not as young as you might expect them to be and it just is not that vibrant. Might be good if you just finished shopping and needed to grab a bite."

  • "We arrived just after Barney's had closed so we were let in by the security and pointed to the elevator. Entrance to the dining area opens to a view of the whole restaurant - don't come here if you want not to be noticed. The soup of the day was quinoa, don't pass this, extremely tasty. We enjoyed fresh pasta dishes. I had the special pappardelle, artichokes and mushroom, excellent taste and pasta cooked to the correct firmness. My companion had the spinach ravioli and enjoyed it very much. Both dishes had the right amount of sauce, a mistake that many restaurants make when compensating for some other shortcoming. Overall, value for money this is a good buy. Quiet to dead on a Saturday night. "

  • "A trip to Fred's is a treat. Ride the escalator up nine floors and enjoy the sights as you ascend. At the top awaits a gracious hostess, friendly wait staff and excellent food. I have only been there for lunch but I never miss an opportunity when I am in New York. The lunch Salad Nicoise with seared tuna is outstanding."

  • "Perfect corner table was ours for a long overdue "friend lunch". Food was as good as remembered. Service was slightly attitudinal, when we weren't ready to order pretty immediately. The waiter had orders to move everyone along, obviously. No smile from him, ever. However, that was a small part of the experience which was "overall" very nice."

  • "Great food. Italian guests loved the pastas. Service less than stellar and unfriendly"

  • "I don't shop at this Barney's so I would never have found this gem without Open Table although it is only six blocks from my friend's apt. We went at 7:30 on a Saturday night. The store was emptying out and the restaurant was not busy, only about 10 tables with diners. It was quiet, good for private conversation, with candles on the tables and a view of Madison Ave. The host, waitress and busboy were all pleasant and attentive. The food was excellent. My friend was on a low fiber diet before surgery and the kitchen made adjustments. She had the branzino, which was delicious. I had a very interesting salad (with warm bacon) and a lamb dish, outstanding. A very good evening out."

  • "I have been to Fred's before, but went with 2 colleagues who hadn't. Very pleasant ambiance, and my friends enjoyed the music playing. We were relaxing after a long day, and Fred's provided very good food and service --including dessert indulgence. I was pleased with our wine choice, and the service was good (server shifted during the meal). I like Fred's; it's in Barney's for heavens sake and it is a soothing space. Lamb chops perfectly cooked, profiteroles deliciously decadent, and my companions enjoyed their pastas. "
