  • "Whenever I dine here it's always very empty in the evening. Can't figure out why--the food is good, the views are great, ambiance and service excellent, so is it just too obscure? Maybe if Barneys would take the farthest south ground floor store window, put in a dining table with mannequins dressed ala Barneys it would get the point across that there's a very good restaurant upstairs. I'm usually here when my fashion friends come in from out of town--whether from NY or Europe, they all remark about the quality and setting. Try it, you'll like it. I love the Gold Coast risotto and the organic chicken, the fish specials never disappoint...the presentation is good and the pace is perfect. Try a pizza in the bar too!"

  • "Overall, very nice. The only issue we had was that we made a reservation for 430p on a Sunday. The restaurant called and said they close at 5p. I thought why allow a 430p reservation even as an option if you're going to call and say you close at 5p? When we arrived, they really didn't want to seat us b/c they said, yet again, they were closing at 5p. We sat anyway. We wanted to dine there as we had plans in the neighborhood. The food, etc. was all very good. This was a slight annoyance, and non welcoming feeling. To the manager - if you're not wanting customers b/c you're more concerned about closing shop, then don't have them as choices! Simply stop taking them beyond 330p-4p if that's your priority."

  • "Fred's was one of the highlights of a spectacular day. From 8:45 until 1:00 we had shopped non-stop for a bridal gown, bridesmaid dresses, flower girl dress and invitations. We were starved and in a hurry to make it to our next appointment at 2:30 when we arrived at Fred's. Our waiter was amazing: quick to assess our situation, take our order, get our food and help us celebrate. Champagne toasts to the brideto-be and a surprise delicious dessert for both the bride and birthday daughter-in-law topped off a wonderful experience. My husband gladly paid the bill -- absolutely worth every penny! What a gem!"

  • "This is a nice place. Atmosphere was lovely, service was very good. The food and drinks could have been better. The pear martini would have been better with less lime, more pear. The scallop entrée was too salty, made me wonder what they were trying to cover up. However, the pasta marinara was excellent and the pasta was perfectly cooked and very hot. Would actually give the food 3 1/2 stars if I could. Overall, I enjoyed this place."

  • "I like Fred's. I find it fun, vibrant, and "in". I was disappointed on my last visit. I realize we had a lot of snow but... no valet means walking to/from outrageously priced parking. In walking the frozen city streets, one appreciates the businesses that shovel their sidewalk and crosswalk. I had to wade through foot deep slush just to get to their barely shoveled sidewalk. Not very customer friendly. Lastly, we were seated next to a patio door which was streaming cold air. The curtain was billowing from the air coming in. The staff looked at it but none thought to move people away from this uncomfortable spot. We did finally realize why we were freezing and asked to be moved. All that said, I'll be back in June."

  • "Decided to try Fred's for restaurant week prix fixe menu $22. If you like lots of greens, that's what you get. First course is basically salads. For the main, I decided on the chicken cutlet which was a very dry (no sauce) fried thin cutlet with lots of barely dressed greens on the side. Quite frankly, it was awful. Two of us had the cutlet, we both thought it desperately needed a sauce. Our friend had the Beef Bolognese, which was average at best. There was nothing special about any of the menu options, and presentation was as bland as the food. Even the desserts - we chose cheesecake & apple tarts - looked like they came out of a frozen box.The best part was the view on Oak Street and the Lake and shopping at Barney's. Not going back!"

  • "We had a 12 pm reservation for 7 people, and when an 8th person showed up, they were more than happy to accommodate us. The restaurant was pretty empty when we arrived but quickly filled up. There happened to be a huge birthday party there at the same time. The bloody mary was terrible, but everything else we had - especially the hash - was delicious. The food took forever to arrive and it took a very long time to get our checks. I still believe it's a good place to go with a group of friends, especially before shopping.... just hope next time our servers are a little more attentive."

After indicating online and in a conversation with the restaurant that this was a birthday celebration we wanted acknowledged wth dessert along with wanting a table with a view of the street scene, they messed up! They didn't give us a table by the window, we had to ask for it. AND, they forgot to acknowledge the birthday girl at dessert. Both of these things we asked for not once, but twice, and they still didn't get it. Very disappointing. The food was very good but I thought the menu limited. With a city like Chicago full of lots of good restaurants, I learned this was one that shouldn't be reserved for a special occasion."

  • "We were visiting Chicago from DC & decided to hit the shops around Oak St on Black Friday. I was so excited to find a multi-level real Barney's as I am a veteran New Yorker. We had a great server who really helped w/ the food choices, I hate when they say everything is good. He advised on the Bolognese which was great on a chilly day. I booked on open table so we did not wait a minute, and the coat check is a treat when you care to shop in the store as well. Cocktails on point. My boyfriends pizza had onions in it which he hates, but they quickly brought him a bowl of soup to hold him while they prepared him a steak salad, also a nice touch."

  • "My wife and daughter enjoyed lunch at Fred's and really liked it. The atomsphere is very hip and fun, the service sharp and friendly, and they surprised my daughter with a birthday dessert! That says a lot, and guarantees that we'll be back. They had the chopped salad and Fred's salad and both were very good. But again, the dessert was over the top vanilla and chocolate cheesecake! There were other entrees that looked very interesting, but salad was the food of the day. A perfect respite when shopping the Gold Coast!"
