Diner Reviews
  • "A couple of years since I have been here. Next time I won't wait so long to go back. We were a party of three. All raved about their entrees, and my wife loved the house Chardonnay. Pasta with rabbit was the choice of one dinner, a fish special was chosen by my. and I had the salmon poached in olive oil. It was a new dish for me and I loved it. Definitely will repeat."

  • "This is not your spaghetti and meatball Italian. They had some interesting dishes. I had the mushroom ravioli. It was good, but could have used a little more flavor, just a tad bit bland. Portions are in the small side. Normally my husband and I split a salad, this would not have worked here. The waiter did tell us the salads were not large. The entree dishes were "adequate " in size. The best thing for me was they have panna cotta - my favorite Italian dessert. It was very good."

  • "I strayed from my usual entree and tried the special risotto with hedgehog chanterelles and sausage---delicious! I love the caesar salad but they do seem to skimp on the dressing--asking for anchovies helps give it the right flavor. Chris did his usual wonderful job of making dinner suggestions and offering a taste of a wine before ordering."

  • "A wonderful dining experience! Everything was perfect -- food, service, atmosphere... couldn't have asked for more!"

  • "Had hotel reservations at the Holiday Inn Express Mill Valley before looking for a great nearby Italian restaurant and were delighted to hear that Frantoio was right next door to our hotel! We had a fabulous dinner -- everything was terrific and we were thrilled with the wine selections. Everything we ordered was amazing. And we loved the bread and the olive oil!!! We wanted to just drink it, it's so good. Our server, Deborah, was the best!! We had such a great time with her. We would go back in a heartbeat. A wonderful evening -- and we were there all evening -- no one hurried us as we ordered an appetizer , drank wine, chatted and ordered more food later.... LOVELY!!!! Only wish I didn't live across the country from this great restaurant!"

  • "Great atmosphere. Able to order full entrees or appetizer size. Has a tasting menu. Definitely recommend."

  • "My sweetie and I had a one year anniversary of our first date and I wanted to go someplace special that wouldn't break my humble musician bank. Frantoio was all that and much more. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a nice meal in a nice setting without all the SF foodie snobbism."

  • "On repeated visits, we have found Frantoio to be caring place. The food maybe the best in Mill Valley, but the prices are well below that."

  • "Delightful as usual especially our waiter Chris's sense of humor!"

  • "I have eaten many times at Frantoio. The food is always good . This time our dinners were just not up to par. In fact one of the diners returned his meal altogether as it was thoroughly over cooked. The restaurant was apologetic and replaced the dinner and comped a glass of wine. Frantoio can do a lot better and should."

  • "Twice in the past month I've had dinner with friends at Frantoio and both times it was an excellent experience. I had the papardelle with rabbit on Wednesday night and it was so amazingly delicious. I'd reserved the corner booth in the front -- great spot. Good ambiance, not too noisy -- 4 of us could carry on conversation without yelling and we weren't competing with other diners conversations. Relaxing, completely enjoyable and very delicious food. One friend had lamb chops and raved. Another had pasta with shrimp and loved it. Jill went soup and salad and was very satisfied. Highly recommend Frantoio."

  • "Kind of located off of the beaten path before Mill Valley, this restaurant truly surprised me. Close to a Holiday Inn Express, I didn't expect much except the pictures of the place and food looked great. Located inside is it's own olive oil press that you get to taste with bread. We shared the scallops small plate and the sea bass - both weren't salty or flavorful enough. The service was truly outstanding! They accommodated our desire to sit next to each other and even placed us in a booth. The waiter came over to check on us at least 8 times throughout the meal! I'd go back for the service and olive oil and will choose different dishes."

  • "Reliable, always good food, friendly wait staff, what more could one ask. We split a salad and an entree, portions for both were generous. Only blip might be an overly long wait between completing our dinner and finally getting the check, but I'd much prefer that to being rushed out the door. We should eat here more often."

  • "This was not our first time we dined at Frantoio but it was the worst...we waited one hour for our server to take our order and it arrived very slowly and in bits and pieces...4 of us were served at different times....we left the restaurant 3 hrs later..frustrated and unhappy."

  • "We had a reservation on a Saturday night and were kept waiting for 20 minutes! During this wait, we were ignored by the hostesses even though we were sitting directly behind them. When we were seated at our table, our waitress seemed bothered with us as if we were extra work! She didn't explain the specials to us even though my husband ordered the steak from the regular menu and there was a special steak that night. As we observed other diners later, my husband would have preferred the special steak! My chicken entree had a small section of what appeared to be grey chicken which I cut away as I felt the waitress would not want to fix it. Overall the staff, food and ambience did NOT make us want to return to give it a second try!"

  • "Unfortunately we had very poor service. Our salads came out in a reasonable amount of time and it was very good and, crispy and fresh with a nice sprinkling of parmesan cheese. The entrees did not come out for over an hour and the waiter mysteriously disappeared. When our entrees did come out, they did not seem liked they were cooked recently - the sea bass was dry and the potatoes were not hot. We were approached by the manager and we were offered an apology and a complimentary dessert and a cordial which was a nice gesture. Must have been an off night for the waiter as this is not the usual."

  • "We have been coming to Frontoio every Valentines Day with another couple for the last 10 years and for whatever reason, this year was absolutely terrible. Apparently there is a new Manager at the restaurant who did not anticipate such a large amount of dinner reservations for Valentines day, so the kitchen was backed up and confused. We had 7:00PM reservations, which were made months in advance, but had to wait 30 minutes to be seated. We waited another 20 minutes for a waiter. When the food finally arrived, it was out of order, and got the 2nd course before we had the first course. Extremely disappointing evening. The only good part of the evening was the music which was wonderful."

  • "The service on Valentines Day, with a fixed menu was terrible. The waitress asked us to order, we weren't quite ready and then she didn't ask again until we asked someone to get our waitress. We waited a long time for the pasta and noticed that no one in the restaurant was eating. When the pasta finally came our entrees came right after, before we received the parmesan for the pasta. Then, we ordered dessert, and 20 minutes later ~ the waitress told us they were out of that dessert. It is doubtful anyone had received dessert at that time, because the main meal took so long to come out. We asked for the check. Fortunately, my husband and I enjoyed each other and tried not to let this disastrous meal get the best of us."

  • "Food always excellent and menu has many choices. Soup, salads, scallops and other fish, meats, thin-crust pizzas, desserts all wonderful. Service fine, waiters informed. Very good wine list, including wine by the glass. Never too noisy, have been here many times with two of us or in family group of 12 or more and always enjoyed it."

  • "Valentines dinner. Busy & reservation a must. Recognized our waiter from past visits: charming, efficient, helpful. Jazz/guitar live music in adjoining sunroom not too loud. Enjoyed the tender beef (manzo) and the scallops looked good. This restaurant is convenient for being attached to Holiday Inn--guests can walk next door for great dining. Frantoio's, with their working olive press room (seen through large window to dining room), good wine, food, & professional servers could hold it's own & better on a main street in Sausalito. Went back next night for dessert, hostess apologized in case prior evening wasn't ideal: they'd had computer system failure-nightmare for staff. They never let guests dining see the strain. Pros."

  • "good food, good service in a very pleasant atmosphere I love to go here as a couple and with with friends. there is just nothing negative to say. Their menu changes, and their italiam dishes are supurb, just ike being in Italy...It has been and will remain a favorite."

  • "Love the space, food is always meticulous (clean, fresh, vibrant), wait staff attentative without intrusive, very welcoming. Even though it is lively, with an energetic noise level, tables are placed to allow for more private conversations. Try the banquettes (ask for one, when making a res/) for a cozy atmosphere"

  • "Our group of 6-8 guys go to Frantoio 8-10 times a year and have our Christmas-time celebration there with wives/partners each year. None of us have ever had a bad experience or an unsatisfactory meal. Menu concentrates on what they do best and daily specials are a plus. We sat 7 comfortably at one of the semi-circular banquette booths, all the service was timely, and one of the attractive features of Frantoio is the acoustics, i.e., it's possible to carry on conversations without shouting across the table, nor are diners forced by proximity to hear the conversation at the next table! A terrific Marin County place for dinner."

  • "We celebrated our anniversary at Frontoio. And we had a great dinner in a fabulous setting. We were very favorably impressed by the new general manager coming to each of the tables to visit with each and every diner. We were, however, disappointed in that our anniversary was not acknowledged by a candle celebration and a complimentary dessert."

  • "Frantoio's offers consistent quality food and drink, an excellent wine selection, and a lovely ambiance. The restaurant makes its own olive oil and pasta and offers unique dishes. This restaurant is a local favorite and perhaps a best kept secret. If you want a quality dining experience before the opera but want to avoid city congestion, Frantoio's is a good choice (easy access from 101 Mill Valley with ample parking.)"

  • "Great location and easy to find. Plenty of parking. Love the decor of the restaurant. It's a little noisy when its packed so don't plan on a quiet dinner if you visit during the dinner rush. The food was delicious and the service was paced for a leisurely, relaxing dinner. I highly recommend the panna cotta if you're interested in dessert."

  • "It was a very quiet Sunday evening which was very appropriate for our dinner (but can't comment on bar scene). We had beautifully prepared food: the day boat scallops were the best I've ever had. My wife had the ahi tuna with crisp polenta wedges, also excellent. We shared a light salad and topped it off with sorbettos and coffee. Perfect for us with special attention to my food allergies (gluten/dairy) by our very attentive wait person."

  • "There's a pleasant and energetic feel to this restaurant. The wait staff were all polite and attentive on a night that was extremely busy. We had the evening special of Petrale Sole with steamed kale, which was outstanding. Our entree was a bit late in arriving to our table, which we noticed but did not complain about. However, the manger noticed and compensated us generously. What a pleasant surprise! We felt well cared for."

  • "This is a large, popular and lively restaurant. I went with friends who wanted to have a quiet conversation. It worked out really well. They put us in a booth in the corner, where the upholstery absorbed much of the sound without making us feel isolated. The service was attentive without being intrusive. The food was excellent. The wine was reasonably priced. The space is beautiful. I would go back any time."

  • "four course prefix menu- our meal were very expensive and very disappointing. I think it must be a different chef than was here previously... I used to count Frantoio as putting out good food _ not over the top memorable, but could be counted on for a good meal. Im not sure when/if I'll return."
