Frank's Americana RevivalConsistent.Our pair of families were introduced to Frank's Chop House five years ago. We have dined at Frank's after each Rice football home game since then. The food has been consistently excellent. We have always felt welcomed, even when we were slightly under-dressed. The wait-staff has been consistently wonderful. Our table of three enjoyed starters of fried green tomatoes and a chopped salad, both of which were excellent. Our entrees included chicken-fried steak (outstanding), salmon, and an excellent creole-style snapper. The fried green tomatoes appetizer is as good as there is in the city, served with a wonderful Remoulade sauce and topped with shrimp. My wife chose the chicken-fried steak (her regular), and I tried the buttermilk-fried chicken, which was good. Both came with a healthy portion of mashed potatoes, and the restaurant was very accomodating about allowing us to substitute their wonderful collard greens for the roasted vegetables on the CFS and the green beans on the fried chicken. We arrived an hour early to visit in the bar and enjoy good bourbon and good friends. James, the head waiter approached us about giving up our reservation to an older couple who had none. We obliged. Apparently this made an impression on the wait staff and on the owner, as each seemed to know immediately who we were and made an effort to thank us for the courtesy extended. The place was packed and extremely noisy, but we were treated well and enjoyed the evening. The food was excellent, the service friendly. Prices are a little higher than we normally pay, but this was a special night. I will be going back.3/16/2013 12:00:00 AMSince Frank's was taken overSince Frank's was taken over by Mike Shine and his group, some menu items have been pared and others added, the wine list has been improved, and what was already a very good restaurant has gotten even better. We each thoroughly enjoyed a cup of some of the best chili we've ever eaten, a special appetizer that we're told may become a staple on the menu. Our entrees included the chicken-fried steak, which is up there among the best in the city, and an absolutely delicious red snapper topped with crabmeat, served with very tasty okra & tomatoes and rice.
