Frankie & Johnnie's may not have the reputation or panache of the more well-known steakhouses in New York, but our experience the night before Thanksgiving was outstanding. The variety of breads was interesting, and our wait staff personally supervised the mixing of our cocktails so that they arrived chilled and appropriately shaken. The ribeye and filet mignon states that were ordered were appropriately chart only outside and rare on the inside, and seasoned to perfection. The mushrooming onion combination was not overcooked, and was lightly seasoned. The House salad was not overwhelmed with dressing so that the freshness of the ingredients came through. Throughout the evening, we had two waiters who, without hovering, where there to make sure her enjoyment was complete. We could not have been more pleased.

I was very disappointed at our recent visit. Although the food was exceptional, the noise level was just too loud and unbearable. At one point, we had to use earplugs. I had specifically asked for a quiet table and it was nice and romantic. Perfect...until the noise level started getting loud. That's when we found out we were right above the bar area which was starting to get rowdy. Eventually, two large parties were seated next to us and they didn't hold back on their noise volume. Also, because our server was serving these two large tables, we lost his attention for stretches of 20-30 minutes. However, when he did come to our table, he did give exceptional service. I would recommend this to friends if ambiance is not important.

Frankie & Johnnie's was recommended by a friend who works in the city. Visiting from NJ to attend Stand Up for Heroes comedy fest at MSG (easy walk to F&Js from NY Penn Station). Classy place, the staff and service flowed flawlessly. The sirloin steak was thick, cooked perfect, and DELICIOUS! Most notable mention is I did not have to notify the waiter it was my girlfriend's birthday and he arrived with a slice of cake and candle. Even the host (may have been manager or owner) stopped us as we left to ask about our visit and wish her a happy birthday. Our thanks to Frankie & Johnnie's for their hospitality and excellent dining experience!

Lunch on Thursday; service is incomparable, menu includes terrific 'standard' options, plus specials, plus a generous pre-fixe. Old steak house feel and you are truly made to feel at home. Hats off to the bartender who mixed the first appropriately-spicy Bloody Mary I have had in years. The whole experience adds up to a class act. Bring clients, friends, and family proudly.

Was not sure what to expect, that was going to be fed very little food for the $$$, well wrong there, HUGE steaks & cooked to our liking, side dishes, even though had to pay extra they were large portions as well. The staff were good, took care of our requests & were somewhat friendly. Also, was very convenient to be right across street from our hotel.

This was my second time here. The service was very good. The food was also very good. I was dining with my mother who ordered the au Gratin potatoes which she raved about. We ordered the gelato again, this time Espresso Chip which was excellent. I would definitely go to Frankie and Johnnies again.

Chose Frankie & Johnnie's because it was across the street from our hotel, and we're glad we did. The atmosphere is great; it's John Barrymore's old townhouse converted into a restaurant (upstairs) and bar (downstairs). Our waiter was friendly, and made some great suggestions. Both my wife and I had the veal chop, which was outstanding. Had a nice half-bottle of Italian wine, which was a great complement to the meal. Having been born and raised in NY, I know my cheesecake, and theirs was excellent. All in all, a wonderful dinner experience. We'll certainly be back next time we're in midtown.

  • Restaurant Week: Go somewhere else!
    AnnieEVIP

Very disappointed. My first visit to some of my favorite restaurants were during Restaurant Week: the adventure of a new dining experience coupled with the value of Restaurant Week prices. The crab cake appetizer was very nice and seemed to indicate a delightful meal ahead. One steak ordered medium was charred so much that the edges were not edible. The service had been adequate, but so frosty that I was not comfortable saying anything about it. Unlike a table nearby ordering off the regular menu with drinks flowing, the waitstaff was very quick to clear our plates--after 3 dinner courses, we were out the door in about 45 minutes. Perhaps we would have had a more pleasant experience if we dined another time.

The food, service and price of dinners and beverages were very good. Because the air was blowing directly on us and we were cold, we asked our waiter if the air could be turned down and he immediately saw to it that it was adjusted. This is a very good restaurant and it is priced fairly.

The air conditioning was out on the second floor. Of course, when we arrived and let our server know that it felt warm, he said he would make it cooler. I was sweating throughout the meal. Near the end, I went to the restroom which is located in the back of the downstairs room. I could instantly feel how much cooler it was. As we were leaving, I asked to speak to the manager. He informed me that the the air conditioning was not working upstairs. Had this been told to us when we first inquired, we would have sat downstairs (if the server had informed us it was working downstairs), or we would have left. This was a special night, and we were disappointed. I feel like we were scammed. Most disappointing was how the manager didn't seem to care.

Table was awful despite numerous other tables being available, and the cut of meat (porterhouse for 2) was fatty. To be quite frank, with all the competition, there is no reason to go here; e.g. The Strip House a few blocks away is only a few dollars more and superior in every way.

I visiting Frankie & Johnnie's Steakhouse during restaurant week and the service was food was great. The restaurant wasn't too crowded and it was pretty quiet for a wednesday evening which we enjoyed. The waiter was very nice and helpful and the food was delicious. The portions were perfect size. For appetizers we had clams oreganata and crab cakes. The crab cakes were pretty tasty, i would recommend these. For our main entrees we tried the surf & turf, pork chops & grilled salmon. I highly recommend any of these dishes as they were cooked very well.

Went for restaurant week lunch course. From a group of five 3 ordered steak, 1 ordered linguini, 1 ordered salmon. I do not recommend the linguini as it was too salty and not so flavorful. Salmon dish was very good according to my friend. 2 steaks were ordered medium well done but came very well done (this could have been since we asked for our meals to be rushed as we only had 1 hr lunch break) and the order of 1 steak was not placed in correctly so a burger came out which we had to send back. The third steak did come out as we ordered medium rare but she had to take it to go as we completely ran out of time. Then the bill came out with an extra charge of burger so we had to get that fixed. Lots of time was wasted due to mistakes...
