A word from Franco
Franco offers classic, rustic French cuisine. We utilize only the best and freshest ingredients and support our local farmers as much as possible. Located in historic Soulard we are 20 feet away from the Soulard Farmers Market, the oldest market west of the Mississippi. Everyday our chef walks the market and changes the menu to incorporate the inspirational seasonal bounty he finds. Some of our favorites are Braised Lamb Shank, Steak Frites and Steamed Mussels. At lunch, don't miss the Coq au Vin. Franco opened in late 2006 and received the honor of being named St. Louis Best New Restaurant by Sauce Magazine, The Riverfront Times, Alive Magazine and St. Louis Magazine. The interior of the restaurant received an AIA design award. It is beautiful and elegant while staying approachable and inviting. Franco has several different seating options with a private dining room, bar, patio and private event space. We hope to see you soon for lunch our dinner.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "I've been to Franco twice now, both for special occasions (my wife's birthday, then my own). I've been impressed each time with the food, atmosphere, and service. The space itself is beautiful, warm, and inviting, while the food is excellent and more traditional. Also, on both occasions, I very much appreciated our servers doing what was necessary but not being overeager. We ordered appetizers, and dinner orders weren't placed until the appetizers had been finished. This allowed us to enjoy our drinks, take our time, and relax. Also, as far as attire is concerned, I wore a jacket and tie, but would have been just as comfortable in nicer jeans and a buttondown shirt. It's a place that can really fit with whatever your occasion may be."

  • "Good take on French comfort food. Try the cassoulet or the pot au feu. Plus is ambience & staff."

  • "Delicious! We stopped here on our way to a downtown event. We ordered salads, a cheese plate, wine by the glass and dessert, and the bill was only 50$. Great food and quality for the price . Made a reservation but didn't appear to be all that busy for a Saturday dinner time. Highly recommend the flour less chocolate cake :)"

  • "If you want a private and different place to eat, try Franco. They offer an extensive food and wine menu, and all is superb!"

  • "This is quickly becoming one our favorites. The food was excellent and affordable and the staff was very friendly. The fish stew is one my favorite dishes in the city. The wine list has some great and affordable options that you don't see at every other restaurant. For reference, we also eat regularly at places like 1111, Sqwires, trattoria Marcella and stone soup cottage."

  • "I had the escargot at the recommendation of the server. They were the best I have had in the US. The wine list was extensive with regard to French selections. Overall a very good meal and a very enjoyable time. Window seating was a little strange, but it did provide an interesting view of the room."

  • "We've been to Franco many times, and are always happy there--and every time we go the food and service are better than the last. My husband and I shared the two fish specials, and they were truly delicious. We'll be back."

  • "Overall, I was not overly impressed with the food at Franco. The caesar salad was watery and my girlfriend's lyonnaise salad was lacking in flavor. The entrees were okay, but nothing spectacular. We had an excellent waitress (forget her name) and I thought the wine list had a nice selection and was reasonably priced. The cocktails were also very nice. Overall, if you're in Soulard looking for a bite, this is a nice place. But, if you can make the trip to CWE and dine at Brasserie, this would be the better way to go for sure."

  • "My wife and I went to Franco's for our anniversary, it was a great experience. the staff were awesome and the food was excellent. We were given a free drink for our anniversary which was a surprise and was very thoughtful."

  • "My wife and I dined at Feanco's last weekend and we're very much disappointed. The salad was generic. The main course of scallops for my wife were tough. My chicken was clearly better than the scallops, but was anything to tell friends about. The wait staff was not polished. No one ever introduced themselves by name. Overall it was not the worst dinner that I have ever had, but for $100+, it needs to be substantially more than what it was."

  • "I started with Martinis. They had no martini menu but I told them what I liked and didn't like and they made me a great martini. Appetizers were amazing escargot is the best I have ever had we used the sauce for bread dipping sauce, it was so delicious I almost drank it. The rainbow trout and scallops were equally excellent and shrimp cocktail was as well. Excellent dinner"

  • "GREAT BREAD! DRINKS WERE GREAT! SERVICE WAS GREAT! I ORDERED THE FISH AND SINCE I DID NOT LIKE BRUSSEL SPROUTS, I CHOOSE KALE INSTEAD. THE FISH SAT ON TOP OF THE KALE. TOO MUCH LIQUID FOR ME AND NOT ENOUGH TASTE."

  • "Well it was only our third trip to Franco but all these meals have been wonderful. The food is wonderful, the service is excellent, the ambiance is just right--classy without going overboard, comfortable but still a little edgy. I don't think it's changed much over the years. The noise level is very low. My gf had the ribeye and cleverly ordered it medium because she wanted it medium rare and that's how it came. I had the trout and it was very good. I think our favorite tasty of the evening however was the pork belly appetizer; so good with the smoked applesauce. I wouldn't get the Gamay (one of the limited number of wine by the glass selections) however; neither of us thought it was very good."

  • "As always I find the food to be quite good at Franco. My only complaint would be service. I've had EXCELLENT service at Franco, but I've also had sub-par service there as well. It just depends on who you get waiting your table. We dined on Friday evening at 8p.m. The place was all but empty, so there's no excuse for slow service. This particular waiter in my opinion has no business waiting tables. He's just awkward and inattentive. I drink iced tea and it's a HUGE pet peeve for it to go empty. It sat empty most of the time. Only once did he bring a refill unsolicited. Anyhow, food GREAT, but poor service will easily overshadow good food, at least for me."

  • "Franco was recommended by a local to us (visitors). I very much like the look, especially the window seat tables and the suspended wooden ceiling panels. Nice job of repurposing the space. The noise level was too high for this kind of restaurant. No salt and pepper on the tables makes a statement of high confidence in the kitchen. Sadly about half the items we tried were very over salted. Our first course was a cheese plate, best item of the night. Soup good but not exceptional, salad dressing way too salty. Ribeye and trout perfectly cooked, but sides awful. Nice plate presentations. Waiter always recommended priciest alternative with no explanation when asked for recommendations. Other servers more engaged with their tables."

  • "Great service, fitting location, and contemporary style with unique taste is why we consistently choose Franco. Jason at the bar makes swift pre- and post-dinner cocktails. Last go, we had Nora to serve us dinner, but all of the servers there are great. She made welcomed recommendations and kept her presence constant and deliberate. For "country French" the edge of Soulard near the Farmers Market is more than appropriate, if not a decent location to meet friends who may live across the river so they don't have to venture too far West or vice versa. Franco provides a refreshing break from many of the Italian and Steak joints that riddle the St. Louis restaurant scene. Dinner was awesome; we had the Duck and the Pan Roasted Chicken."

  • "This has been a favorite for several years, with varying levels of satisfaction. While there have been many memorable meals here, this was truly outstanding on all counts. Noise levels seem diminished, and the décor has improved (mostly with the removal of the mural above the kitchen partition). Love the new menu. Service was really great."

  • "Went to Franco Sat, 2/15 for dinner (7:00 pm). The restaurant is in what appears to be a formerly industrial area of town undergoing a renaissance. Street parking, and several steps up to a somewhat humble entrance...but inside, it's like another world. The interior is beautiful, very nicely done. The dining area was somewhat cozy, but not cramped. I ordered the steak, and my wife ordered duck. We were both thrilled with our meals, as well as desert (Crème brûlée for her, something chocolate for me). My steak was the best I've had in years. Weight staff was delightful, as was the hostess. I highly recommend this for an upscale meal. Total (appetiser, two entrees and two deserts, no drinks) was about $120. Well worth it."

  • "This was a wonderful dinner, without a single misstep. We had a reservation, and were seated immediately, always a nice start. We had two appetizers, two main dishes, and a dessert, all of which were outstanding, plus the house-made bread, which almost deserves it's own review. The service was efficient and friendly. Though I am personally not a fan of mayo with fries, the pommes frittes were excellent. The rainbow trout with chorizo was a combination that I would never have thought of, but worked well. The lamb shank was a huge bone with lots of meat. The flavor was strong, but very good. The chocolate cake with pistachio ice cream was the perfect finish. Rich but not too sweet, it was definitely one I will remember."

  • "We both enjoyed our meals - halibut with lentils and kale and trout with mushrooms, gnocci and brussel sprouts. The escargot appetizer was good (caramelized fennel in a cream sauce), but I think I'm a traditionalist - I prefer escargot cooked in garlic butter. My husband had the cheese plate - it was a good assortment of cheese, nuts, fruit, and spreads. We will definitely return, just not too often. The menu is not large - and there were some items that just didn't grab our interest. The service was nice and unobtrusive. A good place to dine."

  • "Dinner for two on Valentine's Day... servers could not have been nicer and service could not have been faster. I was especially at the latter, as it was a very busy evening. The food was outstanding, nothing was served "just warm"- meals came to the table piping hot, a rarity these days. Overall, a great evening made that much more special by the courteous and friendly wait staff (and hostess) at Franco. I would highly recommend this restaurant for a special occasion, a romantic date, or for someone who just wants great Franco-American cuisine. 4.5 out of 5"

  • "This is the second time we have eaten at Franco. Each time it is a pleasant experience. The local and fresh foods make it a sure to be enjoyed evening. The trout was succulent and the seafood stew was more than enough. One receives VIP treatment by all the staff."

  • "Great food and great service, along with a nice chat with the owner, made our pre-Valentine's Day/pre-41st Wedding Anniversary Dinner very special. We started with Foie Gras and a French Merlot:-), then shared a Crispy Pig Ear Lyonnaise Salad. (We regretted this, as we later realized that the serving sizes of our entrees were most generous. Also, this salad was quite challenging, esp. the texture/bitterness of the frisee, and the pig ear was overcooked (couldn't be cut, per se, but had to be picked up and bitten). Our entrees were superb: mylady had the Monkfish Special and loved how it was presented. (The flash fried kale and other accompaniments were tasty and were cooked perfectly.) I had the Squash Tart Tatin and loved the toppings."

  • "1st time at Franco, and while the results were mixed, we would go back. 3 sides (frittes, onion soup and brussel sprouts) all were good. The cassoulet and was disappointing. It was heavy and too thick and the flavor was bland. We will go back because the wait staff was excellent, I liked the wine list and one off dish doesn't mean that much."

  • "My husband and I really enjoy trying new restaurants in the area. We had not heard about Francos but were given a gift card for Christmas so decided to check it out. The food was good. The portions a bit much. I would consider it on par with Local Harvest but much more expensive. You can get better french/seafood at SqWires for about the same price. Also, while the service was good too, it was not anything special. When you are at either of the aforementioned restaurants, they really make you feel at home. Here, I felt uncomfortable."

  • "Franco's is a favorite. I don't necessarily need a Special event or celebration. The atmosphere is great, food is always excellent and wine selection is very nice. I've never had a bad or even unsatisfactory experience."

  • "The service was as good as usual as it always is at Franco. Ordered the wrong dish though. Sea Scallops were not my boyfriend's favorite dish (we split) and I usually like them but they were way too salty for my taste. Everything else was great though - the bread, the onion soup and the chocolate ice cream!!"

  • "This was a Friday evening dinner for two around 8pm. For us it was a welcome breath of fresh air in terms of a French Restaurants in St. Louis. The shrimp appetizer was good but hardly worth it due to the small size. The entrees were excellent and the service was outstanding! We definitely will be back. Sorry Vin-de-set and Brasserie. You should certainly give Franco's a try."

  • "The escargot app is amazing, easily the best interpretation of a classic. The rib-eye was done to perfection, charred on the outside, medium rare on the inside. The mussels were delicious. My daughter had the scallops which are usually dry on the inside when there is a scored outside. Not the case here. My lamb shank was very good, but I would get the mussels or the scallops next time. Deserts were special. All in all, although the Tuesday night made for a nearly empty dining room, we had a great time and a great meal. What more can you ask?"

  • "My girlfriend and I visited Franco on 1/18/14 during a weekend getaway to St Louis. The food was incredible...she had the rainbow trout and I had the seafood stew. Very nice decor and a great ambiance - it was a perfect choice for our romantic weekend. The wait staff was highly attentive and very friendly. We plan on going back during our next visit to St Louis."
