A word from Franco on Melrose
Franco on Melrose is a hidden gem in the heart of Hollywood serving authentic Italian fare in a beautiful outdoor garden setting.

Chef and owner, Franco De Dominicis is the former Executive Chef at the Biltmore Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles for a number of years before starting his first restaurant, FRANCO on Melrose. His approach to traditional southern Italian cooking blends seamlessly with a distinctly Californian lifestyle through consistent use of fresh, locally-grown products, and his signature dishes reflect the seafood-rich cuisine of his own Amalfi coast home.

Diner Reviews
  • "I chose this restaurant for my boyfriends birthday and it did not disappoint. Although the surroundings are questionable and the entrance was unkempt, the entire experience more than made up for it. Every dish, was on par, we have the prosciutto and burrata cheese, the triolefe pasta, and the spaghetti and meatballs. I'm Sicilian-Italian. This was truly great and not ostentatious food that was flavorful and classic. Nothing superfluous. I would eat here again, and I would bring my mother and grandmother here. The ambiance was also great and worth noting. If you want great classic Italian food, this is a great choice. Don't worry about the price point. Just enjoy the food, like we did and relax. That feeling is priceless."

  • "Excellent service, delicious food, and beautiful outdoor dining. Our group had a wonderful time celebrating a birthday at Franco. We sampled several appetizers and entrees. All were top notch. Fresh ingredients, creative variations on traditional cuisine. $5 corkage fee and complete absence of pretentiousness are unbeatable! Reasonable prices for high quality food and warm, attentive service. Delightful!"

  • "Really enjoyed it here, perfect summer dinner. Not stuffy, relaxed environment, food was good and everyone brought their own wine."

  • "This place has a nice ambience and great food (though it is on the pricier side). I think they just started up -- as there was no wine menu, but you are able to bring your own wine bottle and enjoy it there. They will probably have a selection of wine sometime in the near future as I doubt a place like this will continue going about with no wine selection. We ordered calamari, lasagna, and ravioli. All were delicious! Staff was very helpful and friendly! Overall, a very pleasant dining experience!"

  • "I went to Franco's with my kids. I ordered the lobster pasta in a white wine/garlic sauce with a touch of cream. My lobster was extremely overcooked. I ordered plain pasta for my kids (no sauce, just pasta) and they charged me $18 for each of them. The service was terrible. Our waiter never checked on us (there were only 2 other tables that had guests so it's not like he was busy). I wouldn't recommend Franco's nor would I go back"

  • "Franco's is simply the best! Not only do they offer exceptional food, they have outstanding service and the location and venue is perfect for any occasion. Franco's is now my go-to spot!"

  • "The starch of this evening was the risotto with porcini mushrooms. It was made with fresh porcini mushrooms and the flavor was reminiscent of the dish when I had it in northern Italy. This was a first for me. Usually the dish is made with dried porcini sand lacks that distinct flavor. I definitely will return here."

  • "We originally discovered Franco's when we were looking for a place we could celebrate a birthday and bring our own bottle of wine. Franco's wonderful food keeps us going back!"

  • "Jamie has always been a great host. Amazing food. Byob but recently get their liquor license (congrats) . Love this place"

  • "Bottom Line... Great Service, Very Good Food (Eggplant Parmesan is outsanding), Romantic atmosphere in a covered patio... BYOB but this is a plus because it makes your meal a real bargain price, Franco the owner is very personable.. Jaime the floor manager is on top of the service! Parking is Valet $6.. Great for a date or a Group! "

  • "- Cute Italian restaurant with a romantic setting. Indoors with an outdoors patio feel. - The service was excellent from the moment we walked in until we left the restaurant - The food is delicious. I highly recommend the Eggplant Parmigiana with Bechamel, Risotto ai Porcini, and the lasagna - BYOB - Reasonable prices - We are definitely going back. "

  • "Enjoyed the ambiance. Service was terrific and food was very tasty. Wish I had noticed that it was BYOB. Had ice tea with delicous food. Would have been better with a bottle of wine. I would have brought a bottle of wine, but Open Table should more clearly identify those restaurants that don't have alcohol but do allow you to bring your own wine. "

  • "Really great food! Just FYI, it's a BYOB. Our large party ordered almost everything on the menu. Everyone only had good things to say. Everything tasted very fresh."

  • "Their butternut squash ravioli is AMAZING. Definitely the best I've ever had. It's definitely a must order! Menu is very reasonably priced. They don't have a liquor license so bring a bottle of wine - corkage fee only $5. Beautiful decor, very romantic. Service was great too! Staff was very personable and attentive but not overbearing. Valet is very convenient, right in front of the restaurant. It's also a great location if you're catching a show at the Pantages or Palladium theaters as they're not too far away. We will definitely come back again and again!"

  • "Loved the Pappardelle mushroom and the butternut squash ravioli. The entire staff are lovely and we had a wonderful time."

  • "The indoor/outdoor seating at this restaurant is enclosed by walls covered in green vines. Nice selection of tasty food. Very attentive service. If you do not want your pasta done very al dente make it clear. I've only had the mushroom fettuccine. It was very tasty but very rich. The bread was simple but delicious!"

  • "It was my birthday and all I knew was I wanted Italian food. Thankfully we were steered towards Francos. The food was amazing - we had the bruschetta and the proscuitto with burata. Delicious. Then for our mains we had the lasagna (perfect with the béchamel sauce) and the gnocchi. And finished it off with panna cotta. I secretly wish we had gotten the tiramisu but the panna cotta was amazing. AND the fact that it's byob with only a $5 cork fee. Does not get better than that!"

  • "We had a wonderful meal and the atmosphere was very nice. The wait staff was attentive but could be a little more professional. There was no discussion of specials or answering of our questions, just quickly writing down our order and rushing off, kind of like Denny's. I would still return, though, the food was worth it!"

  • "You could almost miss Franco on Melrose, but don't. After entering through the kitchen you reach a beautiful garden oasis. Attentive friendly service and outstanding flavorful food. We've visited 3 times in the past 3 months with different guests, and everyone has loved it. Bring your own wine, a great savings on a fabulous dinner."

  • "The only thing we enjoyed was our waiter, Haime. The food was fresh but very average. Nothing special at all."

  • "Franco's was a surprise find. The food was excellent, one of the best beef carpaccio's in the city. All the pasta dishes ordered were uniformly well prepared. The $5 corkage fee (they don't have a wine license) is an excellent way to keep the tab on the low side. We'll certainly return!"

  • "We had a great dinner at Franco's. We ate Mama's Fusilli and Lasanga. They were both great dishes. We polished off 3 bottles of wine with our meal. Jaime and Franco are great people. We will be back soon to eat again! Thurston and Luvy"

  • "Excellent food, pasta supreme, funky setting and on premise chef. Currently BYOB with mere $5 corkage fee."

  • "Very busy. Surprisingly nice ambiance. No liquor license so bring a bottle...no corking fee! My friend has lasagna which was divine. My chicken Milanese was horrible...I guess it depends what you order!"

  • "The service was exceptional. The food was great. I would definitely recommend to others and dine there again. The decor is perfect for a date, very romantic."

  • "Met old friend with out Tweens. Even though it said somewhere that it wasn't kid-friendly, I didn't find it to be unfriendly. I raved & devoured my butternut squash ravioli. Other dishes were yummy too, as well as calamari appetizer & desserts too. Very cool atmosphere, feels you are outside but not in cold temperature. I'm not sure if we were in or out! We were in far back. It was a very nice & delicious evening."

  • "My fiance took me here for my birthday dinner and we had the best meal! The restaurant was quiet (probably because it was a Monday) and the service was impeccable. They were very attentive without hovering, which is a tough balance to achieve. The food was so delicious and the byob was a nice surprise! We will definitely be back."

  • "We found this restaurant by accident and what a find! From the minute we walked through the door we were greeted warmly and were somewhat surprised, since the storefront entry is through an open kitchen and then into what looks like an enclosed back patio. It is a very charming place. They don't have a liquor license so we brought our own bottle of wine and we were charged a $5 corkage fee. The food was very good, homemade pasta's, homemade bread and fabulous seafood. The service was outstanding, but mostly we felt like they were very happy to see us. We will be going back! "

  • ""We love visiting Franco's on Melrose, not only because of the food but because of the service. Our waiter is usually Eduardo "Ed" and has a great memory and will have already order our drinks for us. Talk about 5 star service. 1 of our favorite dish is the butternut squash ravioli, as my fiancee, its like a taste of heaven. Service was well-timed, and don't forget the BYOB!"

  • "When I am craving Italian food Franco's will be my go to spot. The place is charming and luckily for me very close to home. I dined with a friend a Friday evening with 7 PM reservations. Greeted right off, confirmed the reservation and just a great night as soon as we sat down. Our service was exceptional and very friendly. The food was amazingly good. The butternut squash ravioli was outstanding. You bring your own wine and only a $5 corkage fee. The waiter kept the wine on ice in the back and continued to fill our glasses as needed. I would highly recommend this gem is you haven't been."
    Dined on 3/13/2014
  • "By far this is hidden GEM. The food is on point and the service the best. We have loved this placed since the first time we went."

  • "My 2nd time at Franco's and it was fabulous. We were there early on a Tuesday night right before a show at The Improv. Jaime as host is wonderful and the chefsare outstanding as well as the servers. I had the lobster and my boyfriend had the short ribs and all was so so delicious. Jaime made us feel special and we even got a wonderful panna cotta dessert on the house! No wine and beer license yet, but they are working on it for March. So bring your own and enjoy the food and ambience. You won't be disappointed!"

  • "It was our first time here and will be coming back! Generous portions of authentic Italian food with none of the greasy feeling sitting in your stomach! A great romantic place to bring a date without breaking your piggy bank lol!"

  • "Good food. Front of house staff was incredibly disorganized and inexperienced. We felt rushed through dinner and were rudely asked to leave as soon as the bill arrived. Apparently they overbooked the restaurant. With so many good choices for pasta in the area I would find it difficult to justify returning given the lack of liquor license and inconvenient parking down the street."

  • "Franco's is a little gem. The food is lovingly prepared and expertly served. Wait staff is delightful."

  • "I'll say it again, Worst dining experience ever! After being seated 30 mins late for a 10pm reservation without a smile or an apology, our server (again without even a "hello or welcome to our restaurant, would you like to hear the specials?") made it seem like we were an inconvenience when trying to order our meal. I'm sorry you had to work so late but this was something we had been looking forward to for the entire week. To add insult to injury, when we received one our main courses, the salmon, it was basically inedible. Never had I had such fishy salmon at a restaurant before and they seemed to have covered everything in salt, to probably cover the fishiness. NEVER AGAIN!"

  • "I grabbed a bite here for lunch and enjoyed my experience. They accommodated my dairy allergy which at times can be challenging. The server knew what was in the dishes and if he wasn't sure...he checked with Franco. The food was fresh, tasty, and the portions were generous. The bread is dangerous! It was warm...light...just plain yummy! Makes sense...they make it there. The baby artichoke salad was tender and the dressing was complimentary. The frutta di mare pasta dish was one of the best I have had in LA. The fish was fresh and the pasta was al dente. Delicious! The server was very nice and attentive. I plan to come back again..this time for dinner. The patio is beautiful and I am sure will look different in the evening."

  • "I often associate Italian food with a glass of red wine, but this place doesn't have aliquot license which seemed to really limit the possibilities of enjoying a full meal here. The food was very good though my pasta seemed more undercooked than al dente. It was good, but probably wouldn't be inclined to go again."

  • "Franco's on Melrose is really a hidden gem, definitely one of my favorites in LA. The dining area is really charming, great for a date, to take the family or for a group. We celebrated a friend's birthday and they were extremely accommodating. One of the best features is their BYOB $5 corkage fee for wines! Amazing deal. We brought several bottles which they kept on ice for us and opened whenever needed. Everything from appetizers to the main course are delicious and reasonably priced. We had the burrata with prosciutto, bruschetta and the calamari to start and a variety of delicious pasta dishes for dinner. My favorite is the lobster pasta. I highly recommend this restaurant and will definitely be back."
