A word from Franciscan Crab Restaurant
"Hands down the best food you'll find on San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf" proclaimed Sunset Magazine. An extensive renovation has revitalized the Franciscan Crab Restaurant, a Fisherman's Wharf institution since 1957. White tiled walls, beautiful marble bar and twenty foot windows overlook the bay and Alcatraz. Terraced dining affords views from every table: hand blown glass shades and chandeliers dazzle, black and white photos of celebrity patrons adorn the stairs and walls.

We love it here. It's great for dates and for family meals. Pricey, but that's to be expected for SF in general and Fisherman's Wharf in particular. The cast iron skillet grilled seafood is amazing. If you like garlic butter...get one of those.

Ordered the shrimp skillet. Get ready to peel 20 tiny shrimp. You end up eating a lot of shells… Poor choice and poor quality

This place came highly recommended from friends and the tour guide we had for our wine tour, and it was everything we were promised. Simply put, the very best crab I have ever had in my life! Comes out on a sizzling hot iron with melted garlic butter (that is to die for in itself!) lots of meat (perfect for 2), melts in your mouth. Also ordered the crab fondue, whichI would not order again. Nothing special about it. Didn't taste the crab. For $18, I would not recommend it. Stick with the crab cakes. The service was just ok, the ambiance was just ok, but the food and the views are amazing! We thought we would be very under dressed but we fit right in with casual clothes. Drinks are very expensive, and the 4% surcharge to cover emplyee insurance is ridiculous.

We love coming to the Franciscan. It was our first Dungeness Crab of the season. There were four of us. Two of us had a whole crab each which was delicious. The other two had Sea Bass. We had the same female waitress we have had a couple of times and she remembered us which was nice. The bartender made a great Cosmo.

  • A Must When Visiting San Francisco

My girlfriend and I were visiting San Francisco for the first time and our friends recommended trying the roasted crab while there - specifically at The Franciscan. It did not disappoint! We were seated at a great table on the upper deck with a lovely view of the bay in the evening. The service was wonderful, our server was happy to answer all our questions. We decided to order the Roasted Crab for 2 as well as the mussels and shrimp platter. Needless to say we did not talk to each other very much since we were too busy devouring the crab! Overall a delicious meal and memorable experience. Would highly recommend it to my friends.

Crab season justed opened a few days ago. I went there to get fresh steamed crab. What I got was piping hot roasted crab in saucy mess on a platter. They killed a crab. If you want to go to Fishermen's Wharf for great fresh crab that you can really taste and smell. Don't go here. Their clam chowder was thick and sticky, it must come from the bottom of the pot. Their salads and salami were good but not great. They have a great view though.

Decided to try the Franciscan, since it was near our hotel in the Wharf area. Unfortunately, we arrived in the dark, so we could not fully appreciate the views, which must be spectacular. It's a very lively and popular place. The servers are up for the task. Seems to work like a well oiled machine. Everyone in our group enjoyed the food. Would recommend to anyone.

This restaurant was recommended to us by a friend who used to live in the area. We loved the view of alcatraz island and the amazing food! It was close to many other attractions and easily accessable from the Cable car lines that made the experience all that more enjoyable! We hope to make it back again someday, but until then we will be recommending it to our friends planning travels to the San Francisco area :)

Food fair/poor. Service poor. Waiter forgot to take order of 1 diner in our party. Had to ask for water refills. Tiny portion of crab on Crab Louie. Cioppino was too salty, watery and lacked flavor. Brought out of town guests there and was very disappointed. Will not return. Do not recommend.

We had a great dinner the first time, the crab two too was perfect for the four of us, so we decided to come back again. We sat in the outdoor patio but it was a little chilly and the heater did not work. Much better inside, at least in October. Food was great again but we had to wait a long time. But I'd go back again. Order the crab, really.

The place was packed, but using Open Table our table was ready within 15 minutes. We celebrated our 33rd anniversary. We were given a window seat and were able to watch the sun go down over Alcatraz and also watch the fireworks over Pier 39. As busy as the restaurant was, the service was great. Crab was good. A different concept roasting instead of the usual.

It was very busy and bussling, but a good overall feel. Out waitress was nice, but seemed overwhelmed. There was zero rapport building, but that's okay. We had to ask for butter with the crab and their cocktail sauce was horrible, but we had a nice overall dinner. Don't order the salads, though. $13 for a bowl of wilted greens. We had three varieties, but they all seemed as though they had been sitting under a heat lamp. We didn't send them back, though, so our fault.

  • TABLE TOO SMALL

Due to traffic we were late for our 6:00 pm reservation, I called to let them know . I was told, "no problem". Upon arrival, our table had been given away. Our party of five waited in a crowded entrance.. When seated the table was much too small it was a bar seating. The food couldn't fit on the table . We ordered entree's and the "lotsa crab", the table was overflowing, knives and forks falling off the table, and some in our party getting fairly agitated. The food came and the agitation increased, the steaks were "o.k.", the mash potatoes were cold and dry (no gravy), and the vegetables were bland but ok. Fries were good, crab did not have the garlic sauce, and was not sweet at all. I'm a local and Disappointed for the money spent!

We eat here on a regular basis, and food is always GREAT! I was surprised that this time we were asked to leave as soon as dinner was over because another group was waiting for our table. Tho we did not order dessert, we usually like to sit for an hour and visit with drinks. Thus far they have a great track record with me, so will be back for another try believing this was a one time event.

Dined here while visiting SF for the weekend. Chose this restaurant based on good reviews, proximity to our hotel in fisherman's wharf and we really wanted seafood. The 3 course tasting menu was very economical ($30) and had some good choices (we had crab legs and crab enchiladas). I was not a huge fan of the chowder (not very creamy). The views of the harbour and Alcatraz were amazing - this is a very special place. The service was great, although very fast. My husband and I enjoyed having a quick meal, but others may have felt rushed especially for a special occasion dinner.
