We really wanted to like Frances. Some parts were good, others not so much. In short, the entrees were quite good but the appetizers/sides were completely underwhelming (beignets & spoonbread for example). It's also a bit odd to be charged for a slice of bread. Nice ambiance and service though.

The dinner was so tasty and flavorful. I took a delicious soup of fennel and celery and an amazing bavette (piece of beef) with mashpotatoes and vegetables. Don't hesitate and try Frances for special occasions! It was perfect!

I love San Francisco's food scene, and Frances is one of the best. The food and service is superb. The only downsides are that it's location is far away from the city and the size of the restaurant is small, therefore making it noisy. But hands down, the best food around!

Frances has excellent food wine list and service. Reservation a must. 5:15 pm earliest seating. Small restaurant. Very urban chic in the middle of a neighborhood. German Riesling was exceptional. Bacon beignets with crema franc he and chives a must. Brevette steak tenderloin melted in your mouth. Outstanding soups and desserts. The Pavalova with lime custard and camelized bananas was my absolute fav dessert ever. The wait staff were exceptional too. Took cab due to parking tough in SF.

As usual, I had a delicious meal at Frances; this place is one of my favorites. A note for those who have not yet been; the tables are a bit close together, a la San Francisco, but it was not an imposition for us, and I am grateful it creates more available reservations at a popular spot. The bacon beignets were delicious (and this from someone who, unlike everyone else in SF, does NOT like bacon), as were the chickpea fritters. The little gem salad was a surprisingly delicious offering, and the duck was perfectly cooked. The spoonbread and, my personal favorite, broccoli sides, were also over-the-top good. Service was great as usual.

Frances continues to be a favorite. The food combinations are intriguing but not extreme. The beignets are to die for. The wine by the ounce is such a good idea but the wine list is also impressive. I wish it was easier to get a reservation.

After a half dozen visits the quality and inventiveness of the selections are being maintained at a high standard. Notables on this visit were the Duck , Trout , Chickpea Fritters , Grilled Beet Salad , and Creamy Potato and Fennel soup. My best choice in San Francisco for a terrific dinner with friends. A comfortable atmosphere with attentive ,friendly and knowledgeable service.

I love Frances and often book a couple months out, just to have a treat to look forward to. You can also chance it and walk in during the week, and you may get seated quickly. Their food is always delicious, and their drink menu is well curated. It is high quality without being overpriced. I like it much better than most of the restaurants that are comparable pricing. Amazing service as well.

Disappointed in the food this time. Normally my absolutely favorite place and we were looking forward to our meal. The avocado/green bean appetizer consisted of 3 small bits of colored beans, some cucumber bits, hard bits of avocado--and too much mayo. The bits of steak were beautifully stacked on a mound of kale and potatoes--flavorful, but all fat and gristle--I just don't understand why restaurants choose the worst cut of meat and then charge $30 for it. The duck breast was overly sweet. Too much fat and sweet in the entree made dessert unnecessary, another disappointment.

Second time visiting Frances. Everything about the experience is wonderful. The bacon beignets are a must! The cava cocktail is also a great start. Potatoe and leek soup is decadently smooth & creamy with the right sweet & savory balance. The duck breast is prepared superbly as well as being rich & flavorful. Do not skip dessert! We enjoyed the delicate pavlova. The space is small and tables are close together but that assists in creating the charm of the place. You will end up rejoicing with your neighbors about the wonderful offerings at Frances!

The food is imaginative, delicious, and pricey, but worth it. Patrons , most very casually dressed, are greeted warmly. The menu offers recognizable dishes with some unusual, creative culinary twists. Appetizer beignets are crowd pleasers. Quality is evident in all the ingredients. House wines, which are quite good, can be bought by the ounce. After each course, all the dishes (even the bread plates) and cutlery are cleared (a nice feature, but perhaps in a drought it should be re-considered).

We've wanted to go to this restaurant for years. Now that we live in the neighborhood, we decided to take one of the early reservations (all that ever seems available). We have no idea why this restaurant is so popular. It looks nice. It is nicely run. But the food is so-so. Our dishes were either bland to the point of no taste or odd combos that didn't work. It is a nice-enough neighborhood place. But with new (and better) restaurants opening close by, it's hard to see why this place is still so popular.

We love this restaurant. Has a small, neighborhood feel because it is small and tucked in a neighborhood. The food is always a little different and seasonal with the classics (bacon beignets) remaining. We usually prefer multiple small plates and salads and desserts over the entrees, as this seems to be where the chef shines. If you don't try dessert you are missing a Big part of the meal. Wine list is varied and reasonable and many by the glass offerings. Josie baker bread is worth asking for....repeatedly :-) Noise level can be a bit high (not a fan of piped in music) and only one table seats more than 4 people. Great place for two couple dinner date. Enjoy!!

We're a French couple living in the city, so we might be harsh when it comes to food quality :) ... For now, Frances is the best restaurant we've ever been in the bay (if I may, I'd say that Frances > Chez Panisse) However, I'd say there is still room for improvements. 1. We did take bouchées instead of appetizers: its good, I won't say the contrary, but we were a bit disappointed and were expecting finer food 2. The deserts: man, we were expecting a lot from these and we were SO disappointed. Don't think that we will order deserts when we come back 3. It was super cold in the restaurant that night, we all had to get our coats back to finish our diner. PS: the meat was .. amazingly delicious

Ordered the smoked applewood bacon beignets, roasted cauliflower tartlette, duck breast, mt. Lassen red trout, linguine alle vongole, the melted leek and white normal spoonbread, butteracoth panna cotta, and Ozark pudding cake. My personal favorite was the red trout which was wonderfully cooked while my boyfriend said the spoonbread was his favorite. The cinnamon brittle ice cream that came with the Ozark pudding cake was amazing too. Service was good, quiet intimate environment though perhaps a little too crowded (just by a tad) as it is a narrow restaurant.

to drive in from the East Bay: tiny place--a handful of small tables crammed next to each other; friendly staff and patrons makes this work out fine, and you are talking to people two tables away; every dish was excellent and several (delicata squash, spoonbread, lumberjack cake) veer into the sublime realm. Eclectic wine list, though we brought our own bottle ($20 corkage). Early reservations are fairly easy to get, so take a walk around the Castro, then amble on over here for a perfect finish to the afternoon.

Enjoyed every second of this dining experience. The service was incredible from the moment we stepped through the door to the moment we left. Ordered every small bite on the menu because we were so excited to finally be dining there! The special tomato tart (or pizza pot pie as my fiance kept calling it) was out of this world delicious as well as the bacon beignets and the fattoush. Next we moved on to the appetizers and ordered the tomato soup (WOW) and the Little gems salad (top notch). For entrees we got the steak and the trout. I was in love with the trout, but my fiance was not as thrilled with the steak, it was a bit chewy. For dessert we decided on the Lumberjack Cake and it was the perfect way to end the meal. Thanks Frances!!

With some reservations we highly recommend Frances. Our meal was excellent; the tomato tart appetiser was divine, as was the tomato soup. The kale salad was scrumptious - not at all bitter, even for a person who is not a kale fan - and our duck entrees were both very good. We couldn't manage dessert, but Frances generously sent some lovely chocolate "cake" home with us; btw, the kale salad was also gratuitous as we had been waiting about a half hour for our entrees; after the salad we still waited 15 minutes. That wait was one of the negatives; the other was the noise level, which, while not the worst possible, was a bit much for us. Nevertheless, we very much enjoyed Frances and will be going back. Oh, and our waiter was fabulous!

I went with my girlfriend for a much needed date and we had a GREAT time. The service from when we entered until we left was as good as any I have had in SF and NYC over the past 5 years. Given we were both vegetarian, the selection was awesome and explaination of the dishes and what we could eat was very well done. Ambiance was awesome as it started quieter around 815 but was a bustling scene when we were leaving around 945. I highly recommend this for anyone looking for great food and even better service!
